The Skies Ain't Friendly No More

So with my enforced exile from the working world, and with the help of my folks, I'm taking flying lessons.

Lesson 1 was today. I'm thinking, "okay, lesson one has to be simple...taxi, and I'll fly a bit." Noooooo.

"Alright, pull it onto the runway, won't be needing the brakes at all, and go full throttle." Whee. Holy shit, I'm taking off.

Took it off, flew, did some turns and messed around a bit. Get us steered back to the runway, and I'm figuring he's gonna take over the controls for the landing. Wrong again. I take that sucker all the way through the approach and land it with a minimal amount of aid from the instructor.

Wee bit of an adrenaline rush there, lemme tell you.

Be afraid. There's a Java Warlord in the skies above.

That sounds cool!! Did you have to do anything beforehand? A written test and stuff? Sorry if you posted about this before, I don't remember.

That sounds like fun. Just in time to learn now that the flying cars are finally working.

Not a damn thing. I went in with experience from Flight Sim computer games...that's it.

Preflight check of the plane, get your ass in, and holy shit, the instructor is letting you take off.

Nah, I live about a mile away from Clow (Bolingbrook). Two second drive for me and I'm there.

You should drop some turkeys out of the plane on Thanksgiving.

Word. Just stay away from the tall buildings, and that should keep you away from me.

Did they frisk you for bombs first? That sounds awfully easy to get on and have control of a plane, even if it is a small one.

Next lesson tell the instructor he can land it because you don't need to learn that part. Take a camera to record his reaction, too.

I'm sorry, but 'complete molecular disassociation followed by reassociation on the other end' sounds more like dying to me.

How would they transfer your consciousness, anyway?

Need to be careful, then you have a situation like in TRON.

I would love to take flying lessons someday. I've wanted to do it for a while, but I haven't found a way to talk myself into it. You doing it for fun, or is there a plan for work here somewhere?

Right now it's for fun and something to do while I'm out of work. I'm not ruling out the possibility of going for a commercial/instructor license for work down the road, but that's awfully far down the line to even think about.

Yeah. I think landing is now a required part of flight school...

FINALLY (fucking weather) got to go up for lesson two today. Fun times, little bit of a crosswind on the landing, and a TON of traffic. First nice flying day we've had in so long, everybody was out and about.

Got to learn stall recovery, which, it's moderately amusing intentionally stalling an aircraft.

Next up, I get to put on the blinders and practice maneuvers using only instrument readings (the blinders make it so you can't see out the window).

It's a good thing I installed the AAA guns on top of the house this weekend.
