NL Selects Rookie Star of the Month
Tuesday, May 1st, 1906: Fred Merkle is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest National League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers. In April the Philadelphia hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .319 average with 36 hits, 4 home runs and 12 RBIs. American League Names Rookie of Month Tuesday, May 1st, 1906: Larry Doyle's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Detroit second baseman has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month. In April he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award. During the month he hit .317 with 10 doubles, 1 triple and no home runs. Doyle also scored 29 times and drove in 18 runs. April's #1 Starter Named in NL Tuesday, May 1st, 1906: Despite the number of years he's been in the league, Earl Moore still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in April. The 26-year-old starter for Pittsburgh was named National League Pitcher of the Month earlier today. He collected 5 wins and no losses with 14 strikeouts in his 5 starts, putting up a fine 2.36 ERA in 42 innings of work. |

May's Best Rookie Trophy Awarded
Friday, June 1st, 1906: A veritable toddler to the National League, Albert Shaw just sewed up the Rookie of the Month trophy for May. Over the past month the 25-year-old center fielder for Philadelphia hit .418 with 46 hits, 2 home runs and 16 runs batted in. He also logged 12 walks and compiled a .472 on-base percentage. This season Shaw is batting .362 with 76 hits, 3 home runs, 24 RBIs, 22 walks, .419 OBP and has scored 34 runs. He has played in 53 games. May's Best Newcomer Named by AL Friday, June 1st, 1906: Youngster Larry Doyle emerged as the latest American League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Detroit deserved the honor, batting .366 with 1 home run and 13 runs batted in. Is the month of May a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Doyle enjoy the limelight. For the year Doyle is batting .343 with 86 hits and 1 home run. He has scored 51 times and driven in 31. National League Announces May's Top Pitcher Friday, June 1st, 1906: In May, Pete Dowling tore through the National League like a seasoned veteran -- quite impressive for a player only 24 years old. The young Boston starter posted a 5-2 mark and an ERA of 2.94 to earn the Pitcher of the Month award. In 79.2 innings he collected 43 strikeouts while limiting the opposition to a .279 average. Looking at his season stats, Dowling has won 9 and lost 7, collecting 61 strikeouts and 42 walks in 139.1 innings with a 3.29 ERA. |

I guess the game still has the defaults on for HoF inductions. So be it.
Kid Nichols Inducted into Hall Of Fame Sunday, September 9th, 1906: At his Hall of Fame induction legendary pitcher, Kid Nichols reminisced about his baseball career: "My how time flies. It is only a mere moment from your first spring training game to your first oldtimer's game. But it a magnificent journey." Today Nichols was installled into the FOOL-Historical Hall of Fame after his selection by the Baseball Writers Association. Baseball's newest HOF inductee was one fine hurler. When Nichols retired at age 36, he had registered 386 wins and 231 losses, struck out 1979 hitters, pitched in 688 games and compiled a 3.19 ERA. Among the many people he mentioned in his induction speech was his first manager. "He gave me my first opportunity when he could have kept other people. I was lucky -- he was a Kid Nichols fan. You can't get in the Hall of Fame without your first chance." Last edited by Young Drachma : 09-12-2009 at 11:24 PM. |

Whew!
i was worried ther for the 1st half of the season. I know it is an alternate reality, but i would hang my head in shame if any team under my control with both Ty Cobb and Walter Johnson on it misses the playoffs!!

Just noticed something, and I'll take whatever hit is coming for it but not sure how it happened: I'm showing a $65,225,000 payroll at the end of the season. I thought I was under to start; does anything mess with these numbers after the season gets rolling? Did these get checked before the season? If not, most likely culprit would be me forgetting that we have a $350K min in this league (right?) and left $100K and called someone up or something.
Regardless, it looks like I played the season over the cap.

Yeah, once the season starts I don't think anything messes with those numbers. The only thing that changes is at the start of the season, once someone with a minor league contract plays a major league game, they instantly get the 350k major league minimum added. |

What's weird is that my export didn't go thru for some odd reason. Anyhow, but players were called up on my team that I did not want called up at all. I.E. Merkle, I wanted him to learn how to play 2b in the minors. DC, do you just auto the team if we miss an export?

Yeah, that ended up being out of necessity after that one season where no one's exports went through blew up my salary cap for me. I had actually intended to go back to 4 man this year for various reasons but I was a complete moron in how I handled this past offseason and didn't get in a pitcher to do so |

I'm 99% certain I was burned by calling up some guys after the draft. Forgot to leave enough room before and check again afterwards. I have cut one reliever who sucked (a 7+ ERA during the season), but will take whatever the cap violation penalty is for not paying closer attention.

By complete moron, he means, counted on Christy Matthewson going to Boston for 7 million more than he chose to go to NY for.
Congrats and good luck to the other playoff teams. I am pleased to have my first taste of the post-season in the historical FOOL-iverse. My team pitched like they were supposed to and the top of my order really knocked the ball around. If McLean re-signs, I'll be in good stead for next year too.

Was not really just that Was kind of a combination of: 1) Forgot to put the FA bid out for Matthewson the sim before offering exactly what he was asking for. 2) Forgot to set draft list and ended up drafting a washed out 31 year old pitcher with my top pick (woops!) 3) Forgot how player negotiations work during the spring training stage of free agency when making my bid. So yeah, I didn't really do the best job with my offseason this year |

I've been using 3 man since we started FOOL-H...but I think it will be my last year. I just noticed that my starters only get back to about 90% by the time their next start hits. It does work i suppose, but I wonder if that is tied into why some of my pitchers have had skill decreases while still in their prime.
