Dungeon and Dragon Online
Dungeons & Dragons Online (DDO) is a fun, action-packed, massively-multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) that allows thousands of players to participate in a story-driven D&D campaign. DDO features swashbuckling adventures, betrayal and intrigue, and lots and lots of deep, dark, dangerous, trap-riddled dungeons.

I am an unashamed D&D fan. I haven't played since 5-6 years ago, but if a D&D MMORPG is good, I'd play it in a heartbeat.

I want that bow that fires the flaming arrows and the shield that stops anything. As long as I don't have to face Tiamat, I'll be okay.

Well, WoW has certainly set the bar for MMOPRGs and has proven there is a market for such games. People don't mind paying a fee to play if there is value to it. An employee at one of the video game stores told me he would rather pay $14.99 3 or 4 times a month, rather than buy one new game every month. This is only applicable if the 3 or 4 games are constantly adding new content, quests, and such. Even if 1 game updates each month, you're still getting some fair value.
I'm only on WoW at this point. I could see myself signing up for the DnD game or the LOTR one. |

I believe WoW now has more subscribers than both of these games combined. |

DOLA:
Keep in mind that the many financial analysts, like myself, have questioned MMORPGs for many years. I happen to track the game industry and have since changed my forecast on online gaming. A few years ago Electronic Arts was giving gamers Earth & Beyond, The Sims Online, and had a Harry Potter MMORPG planned. They have either gone out of business, failed to meet expectations, or been scrapped. And there are others. The reality is that unless you have a compelling product people won't join. Even Ultima Online was a fairly niche product in comparison with the rest of the industry. EverQuest did step it up a notch. Those two products pushed companies like EA, Ubisoft, and Sony itself to launch new titles. Between Everquest's release and WoW, there have been several hyped MMORPGs that never lived up to the hype (Star Wars Galaxies and the previously mentioned TSO). World of Warcraft suddenly has the game companies scrambling. The Matrix Online just came out. Guild Wars is due out very shortly (with a very compelling business model). And there are a handful of other promising titles planned. |
