CLCS Game 1:
Drew Taylor pitches for Apex vs Renaud Lemieux for Newark. Lemieux starts the playoffs for his third different FOOL team in his career and he is gifted a comfortable cushion in this one as Newark scores 3 runs in the first two innings, another run in the 4th and 4 more runs in the 5th. With an 8-0 lead, Lemieux has all of the lead he will need as he pitches a complete game, striking out 8 and allowing only 3 runs on 4 hits. Adrian Tomlinson goes 2 for 3 with a HR and 2 RBI in the win for the Terriers as Newark wins their first playoff game ever.

Apex leads for most of the game, but Newark comes back. In the 6th Hou Chen, the long time Colorado Ranchero hits a sacrifice fly to tie things up. Then Jud wallace another former Ranchero with the RBI single to put Newark on top 2-1. That is all the Terriers will need as Gallegos pitches 8 innings, striking out 7 and giving up just the 1 run on 6 hits.

Tuesday, October 16th, 2040: Amstadter Zeroes in on Hartford
The Harpooners manager was philosophical after his team was shut out by the New York Heroes 3-0. "It was just one of those games, shake it off and do better next time," he said. Pepin Amstadter blanked them on 3 hits with 2 walks and 8 strikeouts. "I kept them off balance. I could tell a lot of them were late on fastballs. They were fouling them off. Once you see that, it sets them up for other pitches," Amstadter said. "I set them up pretty good, where if they chased one breaking ball, they were going to chase another one." Amstadter in 2040 has fashioned a 15-11 mark, 5.08 ERA and thrown 205.2 innings in 32 starts. Opposing clubs are batting .246 against him. |

CLCS Game 3:
Naofumi Ueda pitches for Newark vs Egidio Ferretti for Apex Newark and Apex swap runs in the first two innings and then trade runs once again in the 6th and 8th to remain tied up 2-2 through 8 innings. Both starting pitchers made it at least 7 innings and kept their clubs in the ball game. They'll now hand it off to the bullpens to try to pull out the win. In the 9th, Newark manages a 2-out double from Tetsuo Nishikawa but he ends up stranded. Apex meanwhile gets a lead off walk from Cruden, but he never makes it past first base. So we head to the first extra innings game of the 2040 postseason. Newark draws 2 walks in the 10th but is unable to get a hit, leaving both runners stranded. Apex gets a single but nothing else, so on to the 11th we go. In the 11th, Newark watches their pinch hitter jose Santos draw a one out walk. He then steals second base which leads Apex to walk Nishikawa as well. With two on and only one out, Santos and Nishikawa pull off a double steal. Apex decides once again to intentionally walk Jon Blowey rather than to pitch to him. With the bases loaded, only one out and Emilio Mateo up to bat, he also draws a walk! Antonio Garcia has walked in the go ahead run! Newark now leads 3-2. Garcia manages to get out of the jam by getting Tomlinson to ground into a double play to end the inning but not before the Terriers take a lead. Javier Cruz enters as the pitcher in the bottom of the 11th to try to close out the game for Newark. He gets Quinones to fly out to start off the inning. Cruden manages to get a one out single however to start a rally. The winning run now comes up to the plate in the form of Mark Adams. Adams takes a called strike and then fouls off another one.. the 2-2 pitch, hit... hard.. but right at the short stop. Over to second for one.. On to first.... In time!! That will do it, Newark wins!

They start off hot with 3 runs in the bottom of the third inning, including a 2-run RBI double from Mitsuoki Sugimoto. New York manages to get 2 of the runs back, but that is not enough. Diego Hernandez pitches 8 innings, giving up only those two runs on 6 hits to get the win for Hartford.

Kuei-lin Hsi pitches for Newark vs Jaime Sanchez for Apex Apex gets the lead 1-0 in the first but Newark comes back with 2 in the 5th and 1 in the 7th for a 3-1 lead. With the 2 run lead, Newark gets an insurance run on a Yin-fat Yang RBI double in the top of the 9th. Only 3 outs away from the FOOL Classic, the Terriers bring Antonio Perez in to close out the game. He gets in trouble however as he gives up a double to Jesus Rivera and then after getting Joe Cannon out, gives up another double to Quinones to drive in a run. 4-2 lead now for Newark. Cruden works the count full before drawing a walk and then Cardenas hits a single to load the bases with only one out! Mike Griffith, the next hitter can not even get the ball out of the infield though as he pops up to the third baseman for the second out. We come down to this.. Leonardo Perez now up to bat, the bases loaded but two outs. Newark is now one out away from the FOOL Classic. Perez receives the 3-1 pitch, swung on... and it gets between first and second for a single! One runner in... another scores and we're tied up 4-4 in the bottom of the 9th! That is all for Perez as we will have a new relief pitcher, Juan Torres is in to pitch. Torres faces a pinch hitter, Marcos Duenas who hits a lazy popup that is caught by the second baseman. We remain tied 4-4 and will head into extra innings! In the top of the 10th, Newark goes down 1-2-3. It only takes one hitter in the bottom of the 10th to wrap this one up however as Xi-tong Huo hits a line drive shot over the right-center field fence. 372 feet solo walk off home run keeps Apex alive for another night!

For those not fluent in Dutch, his name means Flower Hill by the way! Anyways, Amstadter pitches a complete game, striking out 6 and giving up only those 2 runs on 8 hits. Hsi one-ups him however with a complete game 3-hit shutout to give the Terriers the win!

Newark once again takes the early lead by scoring 1 in the bottom of the second and then 2 more in the bottom of the 6th for a 3-0 lead. New York comes back however with 1 in the 7th and 2 in the 8th. The two teams remain tied up 3-3 through 9 innings and we head into extra innings!
In the top of the 13th inning, Newark brings in Javier Cruz to try to keep the Heroes from scoring. Cruz leads off with a walk to Okamoto and then a double to Mark Williams scores Okamoto all the way from first base! New YOrk takes a 4-3 lead! Pavlov, Lucero and Rico all three ground out in a row to end the top of the 13th, but not before New York goes ahead in the game. Rafael Lucero remains in the game to pitch for New York in the bottom of the 13th. He gets Tomlinson swinging to start the bottom half of the inning. Nishikawa then follows with a one-out single to try to get a rally going. Burrow pops up however to the third baseman for out number two and then Hou Chen flies out to left field for the final out of the game. New York comes back to stay alive for yet another game!

This is a terrible song. But he says Jersey a lot, so..it's apt. Newark's title in their 4th year of existence breaks the old expansion record to fastest team to a title. Columbus won their first title in '76, ten years after their first FOOL season. Newark tied the old record set by Compton in '69 for making the Classic in their 4th season, but that team didn't have to play an LCS to get there. (and of course, they lost in the 13th inning of Game 9 of the Classic to Brooklyn.) I didn't dig into the history books to see if a team that lost 100 games had ever made the playoffs the following year, but...I think it's surely have had to have happened before, right? Someday I'll check. I'm pleased, because really I just wanted to win somewhere in the 5-year window. Congrats to all the post-season teams and thanks to Alan for adding flair to the proceedings as always.
