Puzzle: Musical Password
Ok, here's a shot at a new game. This exercise will be based loosely on the classic gameshow Password, where teams would give clues to lead to the eventual guessing of the password. This version will have a little twist - the clues will be in the form of songs (videos).
Every half hour I will post a new video clue. The clue will be part of the description of the song, which I will list in the form of "Artist - Name of Song" (in addition to the video). You are all free to throw around ideas, but after each clue you all get one "guess". The guess however also has a twist - it also must be in the form of a song (it can just be text, or a link - but no embedded vids on guesses please). It doesn't have to be a specific song, just one that represents the password. If this proves to have the least shred of popularity, maybe the first correct answer can supply the next installment. Here is the first clue. Toto - Africa

Can you clarify what you mean by "the clue will be part of the description of the song"?

Well...for the first song, 'Toto' could be a clue, or 'Africa' could be a clue. That one's pretty limited. Further clues may not be though, it needn't necessarily be just one word; it could be an idea or phrase (keep an open mind here, and don't necessarily go TOO literal with the words or spelling, etc).

Each poster gets one guess per round. You can take that guess right after the clue, or right before the next clue is given (obviously if you're right it's good to be first; if you're not, you may make it easier for everyone else). You are allowed to discuss though, both before and after guesses. Guesses should be clearly stated though (probably Artist - Song Title just like the form of the clues). I'm going to try to post clues as close to the 1/2 hour schedule as possible.

This is incorrect, but this is a perfect example of a guess that gets it (I see how you got there).

I would assume that if we thought the password was Airplane (which is in both songs) then our guess would be a song that has the word airplane it in?

Peter Gabriel - Biko
Toto's Africa for the location of the song. The Ramone's I Wanna Be Sedated for wanting to be away from the pain the police inflicted Johnny B. Goode - B for Biko (a stretch) The Gap Band - the gap in time between his "interrogation" and being taken to the hospital

This is gonna sound crazy, but...
Somewhere Over The Rainbow from the Wizard of Oz Toto, being sedated (drug references in the poppy fields), not sure about Johnny B Goode, dropping a house (bomb) on me, and Dorothy plus the Tin Man, Scarecrow & Lion. Probably crazy, but I'm not hip with current music so if it's anything remotely new/popular I have no chance. |

I had the same thought, but couldn't figure out Johnny B Goode at all.

I was thinking Wizard of Oz too, but I went to Pink Floyd.
On the above answer, it could be that she was "Chucked" into Oz by the Tornado.

No. And to be clear, I'm not looking for a specific song. I am looking for a specific item/reference/subject. There could be many different artist/song combos that could convey it. It's actually a grouping I've thought about for a while - it's a bit weird that I ended up posting it today.

To separate the clues from the guesses, we have:
Toto - Africa The Ramones - I Wanna Be Sedated Chuck Berry - Johnny B. Goode The Gap Band - You Dropped a Bomb on Me Rock Master Scott & the Dynamic Three - The Roof Is On Fire |

That's fine. I can completely see how folks would go down that road (so did tyketime), and actually expected it.

1. So yeah, Toto was making me think of the Wizard of Oz, although Africa makes a good clue for something, too.
2. Sedated seems like the key word, unless we're looking at Ramone or Ramon as a name. 3. Berry or Good could be clues as well, or Johnny as a name. Or Chuck I suppose. Big help there. 4. Gap or bomb? 5. I'd think Roof has to be the key word here. |

This was a lot of fun; however, I don't think I have the time to put something together right now so if someone else would like to go, feel free.
Oh, and here's the wiki on the answer: MOVE - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yeah, that was a potential weakness. I grew up outside Philadelphia, and at the time it was a pretty huge story - locally. It probably didn't get as much press outside of that, and it also happened 25 years ago (25 years ago TODAY, which I wasn't aware of when I started the thread). I'm open up to ideas on how to refine the concept - being the first crack at this setup it might need some fine-tuning.

For starters, to be more like actual Password, instead of offering different clues one at a time, you would have had to keep repeating "Toto - Africa" over and over in different fonts while acting shocked that we didn't know what the hell you were talking about.

I think the concept works just fine. Someone got it, after all. If we all knew the answers the game would be too easy. I'm just glad there was a reason I couldn't figure it out. I look forward to the next. |

Wow, that was really clever. Took me a while just to understand what was going on (even after the winning guess) until the wiki. Ramona Africa. Mayor Goode. Bomb on the roof.
