So I Found Out My Dad Is In Seriously Bad Shape

I don't even know where to begin. My dad was instutionalized in a psychiatric Hospital a few months ago and had wn episode last week where he got beligerant with my mom. She called the cops and back he goes. On Friday mom gets a call from my dad's doctor and he tells her that they got test results back and my dad tested high for prostate cancer. Mom goes to the psychiatric hospital and tells them he needs to go to a hospital asap. They say he's biligerant and dont wanna send him to the hospital the way he is. They performed some tests this weekend and they say the cancer is advanced, but my mom didn't tell me how much. I have called his social worker to get specifics and left a message.

So not only is my dad taking meds for bipolar/schitzophrenia, he's also taking meds for diabetes, high blood pressure and now... cancer.

I'm shaking right now and out of breath. We saw him over the Christmas holiday and he was fine. But now, all this. I cant even begin to imagine how my mom is coping with all this.

If you're still with me, thanks.

Hang in there DC. I wish there was something more helpful/useful I could say but I just don't know any words for this

Sorry to hear this Lorena. Definitely not an easy thing to have to deal with. All I can say is, do the best you can to help and don't be afraid to vent. Sometimes talking things out, helps.

Not to sound negative, but, I'd also make sure that your dads stuff is in order in case things turn for the worse. I hope they don't, but, it will relieve some of the stress if most or all of the legalities are taken care of sooner rather than later.

Again, I'm very sorry to hear this and I hope things take a positive turn for your dad and your mom.

Good luck. Prostate cancer is slow, so if it hasn't spread he should have options.

Thank you all so much. Your thoughts and prayers mean more than you know.

I spoke to my dad yesterday and it was like the first time I spoke to him the first time he was intitutionaled... slurred speech and was able to pick up a few words like: i'm doing well, i wanna go home, your mom, and that's about it. The institution he's in is super strict: visiting hours are limited to 1.5 hours, no kids allowed, patients are not allowed to talk on the cell phone (something about patient confidentiality), no outside food is allowed, but yet they're allowed to smoke. My mom was pissed bacause she brought himbfruit and they didnt allow it, but yet my my dad wanted cigarrettes (this was before we found out about the cancer) they were fine with it. Backwards ligic, I don't get it.

My mom is working on getting him transferred to the first psych ward since it seemed to be a better fit for him.
