My 32
In every football game, I root for one team to beat another. How do I determine it? I have a list of my teams, in order, from 1 to 32. I compile it at the beginning of each year. Wanna see?
Abe's 32 1). Jacksonville Jaguars 2). New York Giants (love Tom Coughlin’s Jags North feel for the team, love Jeff Hostetler) 3). Kansas City Chiefs (Love the old school team for some reason) 4). New Orleans Saints (fell from 3 last year because they won SB, heart favorite post Katrina) 5). Pittsburgh Steelers (Only team from Appalachia!) 6). Miami Dolphins (There’s a big drop from 5 to here, where teams like Eagles and Rams used to be. A lot of fun to watch plus Pat White’s team. Drafting Pat White put this in my top 10, and it's still there even though he's gone) 7). San Diego Chargers (Why they are down this low – asshole Philip Rivers; reason I love them, powder blues, they regularly support HDSA charity with events) 8). Houston Texans (I like to see the expansion team get wins) 9). Detroit Lions (I dislike the division mostly, and I see their games all of the time, so I always root for them to lose to the Lions) 10). Washington Redskins (Just as high as you will see the Dan Snyder team after they got McNabb) 11). Atlanta Falcons (post-Vick era with Matt Ryan is okay) 12). St. Louis Rams (from #6 to #12, but I still want them to win) 13). Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Now we are hitting “Meh” territory. Love the unis, stadium, and such) 14). New York Jets (I like running teams with strong defenses) 15). Philadelphia Eagles (I still like Andy Reid et all, but post McNabb drops them from #7 to #15) 16). Baltimore Ravens (they play football right) 17). Green Bay Packers (Tradition + letting Favre go and just moving on) 18). Carolina Panthers (Enhhh) 19). Seattle Seahawks (Enhhh) 20). Buffalo Bills (Enhhh) 21). New England Patriots (Enhhh) 22). Indianapolis Colts (Enhhh) 23). Arizona Cardinals (Enhhh – These six Enhhh teams are those I don’t have much of a view about one way or the other. So I just ordered them based on, out of this group, which one would I want to win first, second, etc.) 24). Tennessee Titans (Not a bad team, just my team’s rival, so….) 25). Cleveland Browns (Saw a game in their stadium, not even great. Very poor fans) 26). Chicago Bears (They always have a higher estimation than they deserve - they are not good) 27). Denver Broncos (Very arrogant, pricks basically) 28). Minnesota Vikings (I am really anti-Favre these days) 29). Cincinnati Bengals (Dicks and thugs) 30). San Francisco 49ers (They rose from 31 this year) 31). Oakland Raiders (Do I need to list reasons) 32). Dallas Cowboys (Ditto) Changes – Rams fall hard without Bulger, the WVU QB at their helm. Eagles fell hard without McNabb.

When I was in middle school or so, I had something pretty close to this -- probably a team in all 6 divisions that I liked. But I realized that I was becoming a bit too obsessed, and scaled it back a bit.

I could probably do this for baseball. And maybe hockey. Dunno if I actively hate more than half a dozen NFL teams for one reason or another, but I've never thought about it until this post. Heh.

Yeah, I think I could for baseball, but a lot of that is liking organizational philosophies more than the teams themselves. Here are my "soft" groupings as were - within each, you could move teams around and I wouldn't quibble. I will say I've written this in a neutral context as opposed to a specific year "who do I need to win" contest - ie, this year, I'd like Philly / Col / SD / Atl to lose the most games, because of the Giants playoff implications, but I generally like San Diego more than any of the other 4 teams grouped with em. The "I would cut off a thumb" department: 1- San Francisco Giants The "I like them, and if my team can't win" department 2- Tampa Bay Rays 3- Boston Red Sox 4- Pittsburgh Pirates 5- Oakland Athletics The "I like org philosophies or root for the story" department 6- Milwaukee Brewers 7- Seattle Mariners 8- Cleveland Indians 9- Minnesota Twins The "indifference albeit generally positive inclination / or sad sack loser who I'd like to see win" department 10- Toronto Blue Jays 11- Cincinnati Reds 12 - Kansas City Royals 13 - Detroit Tigers 14- Washington Nationals 15- Texas Rangers The "something random annoys me " department 16 - St. Louis Cardinals 17 - Philadelphia Phillies 18 - Baltimore Orioles 19- Chicago Cubs 20 - Chicago White Sox 21 - Houston Astros 22- Florida Marlins The "division rival / annoyance" department 23 - San Diego Padres (except this year, where I hate the fuckers) 24 - New York Mets 25 - Colorado Rockies 26- Arizona Diamondbacks The "rot in hell" department 27 - Atlanta Braves 28 - Anaheim Angels 29 - New York Yankees The "clean up the shit from the hell above" department 30. Al Queda 31. Al Queda's mutant love child with Hitler and Garth Brooks ... The "Tommy Lasorda" division 32. The Dodgers. Last edited by Crapshoot : 09-14-2010 at 01:23 AM. |

See, Crapshoot's overthinking this.
The list goes like this: 1. Los Angeles Dodgers 2. Anybody playing San Francisco 3. Anybody NOT playing San Francisco 4. Anybody in a position to cause San Francisco emotional trauma. San Francisco themselves never make the list, because, fuck San Francisco. ![]() |

Wait wait - are you saying someone not playing the Giants is a higher rooting interest than someone in a position to cause them trauma? SackAttack, you big softie, you. ![]() I like the fact that there is genuine hatred vs the Dodgers. I mean, I hate the Rockies and the Padres and the D-backs when they are competing for the division, but its not the kind of deep-rooted loathing I have for all thing Dodger-related, you know? The other teams in the division don't really matter as much (and I imagine you feel the same way?). ![]() Last edited by Crapshoot : 09-14-2010 at 01:35 AM. |

Well, see, the problem with emotional trauma is it's so random and hard to predict, you know? You can't root for the team in a position to cause emotional trauma until you know they actually have that power. That's why they occupy the spot below the teams who simply aren't playing San Francisco, because that's easy to quantify. ![]() |

No list, just rules.
1. Packers 2. Anyone that will help the Packer's chances to make the playoffs 3. Anyone playing the Vikings 4. Anyone playing the Bears 5. Anyone playing Detroit 6. Anyone playing Dallas 7. Underdog AFC Team 8. Underdog NFC Team Can't make a list because it would be a jumbled mess depending on #2 which could actually find me rooting for the Vikings or Bears at some point in the season. The only reason Dallas is on there is because of my brother in law. He doesn't follow football, couldn't identity a football more than 6 out of 10 times if in a lineup of other balls and has only picked the Cowboys because of the 90's vs the Packers and is one of those people that just likes to cause trouble.

1) Denver Broncos
27-32: Jets, Cowboys, Ravens, Chiefs, Chargers, Raiders. (sorry, I hate every other team in the AFC West. The Jets will leave the list when jack ass leaves, the Cowboys just suck and as great of a football player as Ray Lewis is, I could never bring myself to cheer for him. (yeah, last night was kind of hard) The rest of the teams? Like some better than others, but I really just like watching the game. |

I don't have a top list, but I definitely have a bottom list.
29. Kansas City 30. Denver 31. Pittsburgh 32. Dallas That's been pretty consistent for about 20 years. |

1. Falcons
2. Whoever is playing against the 49ers 3. Whoever is playing against the Saints 4 - 30. Doesn't matter 31. Saints 32. 49ers It is weird, that since the realignment, I just don't have a huge dislike for the Panthers or Buccs. Maybe it will take another decade or something for those to develop. The 49ers, I will always despise thanks to them ruining football for me in the 1980s. The Saints I'm just bitter that they got the Championship before the Falcons did. As many years as I went through as a kid when the Falcons were no good, at least we always knew that we were better than the Saints. Last year just turned everything I knew about football upside down. |

Without trying to rank all the teams in the middle for which I don't have strong feelings either way, mine would be:
1. Dallas 2. St. Louis (thanks to Sammy B.) 3. Minnesota (thanks to AD) 4. Packers (always liked Green Bay) 5. Ravens (just like the way they play) 6. New Orleans (good story, good people. take Shockey off this team and I'd like them more, though) 7. Indy (Peyton's cool) ...all the middle teams... 29. San Francisco (ancient hatred) 30-32. Philly, Washington, Giants (for obvious reasons; eli makes the giants last) Last edited by Cuckoo : 09-14-2010 at 12:52 PM. |

Because he talks a lot for a guy who has never gotten it done before. And the picture.

Gotten what done? Win a Super Bowl? So, you have to win a Super Bowl to be able to talk? He likes to talk and jaw just like a lot of other players who are not quarterbacks like to do. The Chargers win most of the games he plays in. I guess maybe he should have been kicking those 3 missed field goals against the Jets in the playoffs last season or tackling Shaun Green to stop him from scoring that 50+ yard touchdown run? Or kicking the missed field goal in OT against the Jets a few playoffs before that? Or ran for LT during the playoffs despite Rivers having two torn up knees? Or took over clock management for Marty in the playoff game against the Patriots? So, I'm a bit confused as to what he needs to get done. Winning a Super Bowl is a team effort and some luck. Ask Trent Dilfer.

Hey, I was just explaining why people think he's an asshole. YMMV. People generally don't like people who talk trash, let alone those who do it but lead teams that seem to underachieve. I think he's a great QB.

I was just curious.
Lots of players talk trash though and that's what doesn't make sense to me. It's part of the game really. I can't deny that the Chargers underachieve, but, it's not because of Rivers. Which sucks, because sadly, I see him becoming another Dan Fouts: Great QB, but, no Super Bowl.

1. Minnesota Vikings - Homestate underachievers
2. Washington Redskins - Loved them as a kid in the 80's 3. Jacksonville Jaguars - 4. Houston Texans- 5. Miami Dolphins 6. Detroit Lions- It seems like every year I cheer for them a lot to beat Chicago and Green Bay. 7. Baltimore Ravens-Ray Lewis is fun to watch on defense. 8. St. Louis Rams 9. Kansas City Chiefs 10. Pittsburgh Steelers 11. San Diego Chargers- I actually like Rivers. He is a great competitor which I like to see out of players. 12. Cincinnati Bengals 13. Carolina Panthers 14. Tennessee Titans 15. Denver Broncos 16. Cleveland Browns 17. Seattle Seahawks 18. Indianapolis Colts-Nothing really to dislike however I am becoming sick of them winning 85 percent of their games. 19. Seattle Seahawks 20. Buffalo Bills 21. San Francisco 49ers 22. Tampa Bay Bucs-Ugly ass uni's 23. New York Jets 24. Oakland Raiders -Al Davis is an idiot 25. New England Patriots-Were my favorite AFC team until they became who they now are. 26. Green Bay Packers-I actually like a lot of their players and their fans are pretty good. Being the Vikings main rivals I couldnt have them any higher. 27. Atlanta Falcons -Dirty birds 28. Philadelphia Eagles 29. New York Giants 30. New Orleans Saints - I used to like them until Katrina overkill. Every single time they play this is the main storyline. 31. Dallas Cowboys - Thier franchise is going to eventually kill the NFL as we know it 32. Chicago Bears- Jay Cutler and I deal with too many of their fans on a daily basis Last edited by jbergey22 : 09-14-2010 at 02:56 PM. |

My 32
1). Oakland Raiders (The first Team I ever saw on TV as a kid in England) – Really glad they got rid of JaMarcus the Muppet finally. 2). Indianapolis Colts – Peyton is just that damn good….plus I like to see smaller market teams win. 3). Houston Texans - Always rated Gary Kubiak when he was a Denver QB, and want him to succeed. 4). Arizona Cardinals – just because Warner was their QB and I don’t want them to suck yet. 5). Kansas City Chiefs – they are just fun to watch. 6). New England Patriots – Moss, saw him play once in Oakland and he worked his butt off on a really bad team that day…..contrary to media reports. 7). Denver Broncos – Can’t get Elway and his talent out of my mind, no matter how many times they beat Oakland. 8). Dallas Cowboys – Because of the book ‘boys will be boys”, gave a great insight into the triplets era. 9). Detroit Lions – Only because I want to see them get back to mediocrity. 10). St. Louis Rams – Because they were once the greatest show on turf and I want to see them get back to being good again. 11). Pittsburgh Steelers – Rothlisberger what a moron, but I respect the rest of the talent on this team. 12). Tampa Bay Buccaneers – I hope they do ok, because I remember the Testaverde era when they sucked and I have sympathy. 13). Baltimore Ravens – some days I like them, some days I hate them. 14). Miami Dolphins – never cared. 15). Green Bay Packers – never cared. 16). Carolina Panthers – never cared. 17). Jacksonville Jaguars – never cared. 18). Seattle Seahawks – just don’t care. 19). Tennessee Titans – dislike Vince Young and hate the fact that Kerry Collins played well for them after sucking at Oakland. 20). San Diego Chargers – Haven’t got over them getting rid of Brees and their GM is a cretin. 21). New York Jets – like the attitude, just detest Jersey and any Jersey teams 22). New Orleans Saints – never liked them, and still don’t. 23). Chicago Bears – Arrogant, obnoxious self entitled muppets, and I want Cutler to suck for being a big baby in Denver. 24). Buffalo Bills – haven’t cared since the Jim Kelly era….also T.O played there! 25). Washington Redskins – Because they are so boring to watch (and Snyder is an idiot). 26). New York Giants – Don’t care after Ernie Accorsi left as GM. 27). Minnesota Vikings – I’m sick of hearing about their QB. 28). Philadelphia Eagles – prior to Mike Vick they would be higher mainly thanks to the Mark Bowden book Bringing the Heat…..I really just hate Vick. 29). Atlanta Falcons – Because the drafted and promoted Vick (I detested Vick before the scandal), going to be at least another decade before I forgive them. 30). San Francisco 49ers – Bay Area rivalry. 31). Cleveland Browns – Because of what Belichick did to Kosar, never forgiven them (yes technically I should blame the Ravens......but who needs logic for hating a team). 32). Cincinnati Bengals – Got a friend who is a huge fan and we have a yearly bet about their wins so I have to detest them on general principles.

In their current Tom Coughlin iteration, yes, I am. Look at the schemes and to some degree the personnel. With Vick their permanent starter, drop the Eagles to 27 from 15 and move everybody up one. That means they dropped 20 spots in about 6 months time.

I thought I was the only person that did this. I've done this several times because I just noticed how I rooted for certain teams against others, but that it would change over time depending on players, etc.
1. Colts - this doesn't change. I made it through the 1991 season, I'll make it through anything with them 2. Buccaneers - Been to some games when my grandparents lived in FL. Always liked them since 3. Packers - I actually own a share of Pack stock. Have no idea why, just thought it would be cool. Love visiting Green Bay, the ultimate football town. 4. Saints - Big Brees fan 5. Jets - One of my favorite teams growing up was the Jets. Klecko, O'Brien, Lyons...loved watching them. Still like them today, glad they are back and I don't mind Ryan. 6. Lions - They've shot up. Love to see them start winning. Used to like them a lot when Sanders was there. 7. Bengals - They are usually in my top 10 being the other local team. Took a hit with TO. 8. Eagles - Another team that usually is higher. Liked Jaworski, Like Cunningham, Liked McNabb. If it wasn't for Vick, they'd be a top 5 team. 9. Titans - My favorite division rival and usually root for them to do well. 10. Giants - Like Eli, Kiwanuka, some others. 11. Dolphins - probably a holdover from the Marino days. They just never dropped far. 12. Browns - They were a bottom 3 team for me for years. Then suddenly they left Cleveland and I missed hating them. weird. Even find of like Kosar now. 13. Seahawks - Always liked Hasselbeck. Also like their LBs. 14. Cowboys - The first of the teams I might casually root for in the right situation. 15. Cards - Took a tumble when Warner left. 16. Broncos - Same, but with Elway 17. Chiefs - Same, but with Green 18. Falcons - Meh, though I do like Ryan 19. Rams - Meh 20. Bills - Usually higher 21. Texans - Took a tumble lately. Not because of their big win, but that they are starting to sound like the Jags. I'll listen if they win the division. 22. Raiders 23. 49ers 24. Panthers 25. Redskins - last of the Meh teams. Haven't really liked a guy on this team since Monk. 26. Vikings -Maybe it's Favre. Maybe it's Childress. I just don't like the vibe I get from them. 27. Bears - Cutler alone puts them here. 28. Ravens - It's more about the constant Baltimore hate. The Colts left 26 years ago, get over it. I'd like this team a whole lot more if they were anywhere else...really like a lot of their players. 29. Chargers - Easily a top 2 team in the 80s. I grew up on Fouts and company. Even with Humphries, I like this team. Then Brees came along, still loved them. Then, they got Rivers, a colossal prick. Hate Merriman. Turner is an idiot. 30. Steelers - Just an annoying team with annoying fans. 31. Patriots - No self-respecting Colts fan put them higher than 28. Still, at least RESPECT this team. 32. Jags - Don't respect them. Don't like them. Every year they go on and on about how they've arrived. Then, we beat them. Rinse and repeat. Just shut up already. 19. |

Mine:
1. Chargers - Rivers is an elite quarterback, hell of a nice guy and a true competitor. Had doubts about him when Brees left, but, he's proven that he can be a winner. Hate Norv, starting to hate AJ Smith. 2. 49ers - Always had a soft spot for them long before they were ever in a SB. 3. Dolphins - Always liked them for some reason. 4. Buccaneers - The orange uniforms were cool. Bring them back! 5. Colts - Mostly because that was the name of the team I played on when I was a kid. 6. Cardinals - Long time underdogs that have seen some success lately 7. Jaguars - A team from my home state 8. Oilers/Titans - Always liked the color of their uniforms and was a big fan of Earl Campbell. 9. Bears - Always a losing team until the mid 80s. Another underdog thing. 10. Packers - Liked their uniforms and it always seemed to snow when the Chargers played them there in Green Bay. 11. Texans - I don't dislike them. 12. Falcons - Another team that never really won much until fairly recently. 13. Bills - No love or hate for them. Sad that they go 4 times in a row to the SB and can't win at least one. Sounds like something the Chargers would do. 14. Browns - I like their history, especially Jim Brown. 15. Saints - No love or hate for them as well. I'm glad Brees got his ring. He's an elite QB like Rivers is. 16. Eagles - Growing up and hearing the Jaworski name and their unfortunate loss to the Raiders in the SB. 17. Vikings - No love or hate for them. Had some great defenses in the past. 18. Giants - Eh, no feelings either way for them. 19. Lions - Never followed this team and was sick and tired at an early age always seeing them play on Thanksgiving. Borrrrriiinnnggg. 20. Panthers - Eh. Other than wanting to punch Steve Smith in the face because he has a face that makes you want to punch it, I could care less about this team. 21. Jets - Never hated them until Ryan became their coach and the complete circle jerk from ESPN and other media organizations over Sanchez. Mediocre QB at best right now, definitely not worth the amount of air time spent on him. 22. Ravens - Don't like their attitude, but, I like their QB and their coach. 23. Bengals - Fuck you freezing weather and wind. 24. Rams - Any team from LA gets no love from me. 25. Redskins - Your owner sucks, he's the Al Davis of the NFC. Gibbs was awesome back in the day. 26. Seahawks - Brian Bosworth in the hou...oh wait, he's done. Never mind. Just a team that irritated me because they always sucked and always gave the Chargers a hard time. 27. Chiefs - I don't know if I should blame Marty or your teams underachieving efforts in the playoffs on the players. Either way, your helmets with the too small face masks looked stupid. 28. Broncos - I liked Elway, but, will never like your career ending injuries by chop blocking the knees of opponents. Stay classy Denver. 29. Steelers - Currently with a half witted QB that is lucky enough to play on a team with one of the best defenses year after year. I liked Chuck Noll as their coach and liked Bradshaw and Rocky Bleier. Love Polamalu. 30. Patriots - I was all for you guys against the Bears in your first SB and I was all for you guys against the Rams. I think the worst thing that happened to your team and especially your fans is, actually winning the Super Bowl more than one time. Be satisfied with what you got. It's not the end of the world if they don't win the Super Bowl every year. It's ok, really. 31. Cowboys - NO, you are NOT America's team. Never have been, never will be not matter how many times you repeat it over and over and over and over and over and over and over... 32. Raiders - And the team spent time in LA. Tsk tsk. Thank you for forcing a no beer policy after the 2nd quarter. Thank you for forcing the elimination of single game tickets sales. Thank you for your fans that like to stab people over a stupid football game. Thank you for getting your asses slapped back and forth for the last 8 years by Tomlinson and Rivers and Gates AND a big thank you for having one of the worst SB losses ever, IN SAN DIEGO. Couldn't have happened to a better team. EDIT: Thank you Pumpy for pointing out the omission of the Seahawks.

I like how jbergey22 mentioned the Seahawks twice and JediKooter didn't mention them at all.

I have to admit that I keep forgetting that the Seahawks are in the NFC now, even though this is their ninth year there.

I don't understand why you have the Predators ranked #19. I always thought you were a big Martin Erat fan.

I find myself rooting for the Dolphins right now, so obviously my #5 and #6 need to be switched on my list.
