That doesn't necessarily mean the Yankees wouldn't have gone higher if they needed to. Though, I'm sure Boras was using the Nats to help drive the price up. Last edited by molson : 10-19-2010 at 01:09 PM. |

I actually wrote for some Twins blogs during that time. I have a Paul Molitor signed baseball for my trouble. Tom Kelly, as much as I love him, rarely handled young players well. But the Twins were also drafting like idiots. That was their problem. |

His secret to success was his fat. One year he came back to Boston all slimmed down and he was never the same pitcher. There was actually a theory that his gut helped him because it obscured the ball for longer - the batter just saw a ball flying out a split second late out of a mound of fat. |

That was in the Mariners' court, not Lee's. They essentially liked Smoak more than Montero. Yankees weren't outbid; the Mariners valued their package differently. Perhaps if they had added a felon to the deal...

Gammons apparently reporting on WFAN that Greinke is on the block and wants to join the Twins.
While Greinke wanting to join the Twins makes sense (good team, low-key city, familiar division) I think it would be fucking idiotic for the Twins to trade prospects for him.

Yes, I'm aware of the difference between FA and a trade. The sentiment seems to be that no matter what, if they Yankees want a player, they get him. And at the trade deadline, the Yankees lost. Right, but that is not the context anyone is using here. There's an implied "in the free agent market".

I think that Montero will be a comparable hitter to Smoak. The M's made the wrong call here.

If Montero is as good as Smoak or better, than that's even more evidence that the Yankees weren't "outbid." That was the Mariners' choice betwen two competitive offers. the Yankees obviously didn't want Lee bad enough to give more than they offered, so I wouldn't make too much of their failure to make the trade.

Yes it would be fucking idiotic of them if he was in the last 3 months of his contract. The Twins dont have the luxury of being able to trade their top prospects for 3 months of service. They arent the Yankees, Red Sox or Angels where they can just buy out of their mistakes. Since hes not he is exactly what they need. I am sorry that not all of you realize not every team is loaded with talent and money. Last edited by jbergey22 : 10-19-2010 at 04:35 PM. |

If Ryno wants to come to Toronto, I'd be cool with that. I doubt it though. No idea who they'll ultimately hire.

While that may be true, making such a trade will result in them only losing in 4 to the Yankees and could threaten their long-term ability to contend.

I'm not sure what discussion I am stepping into here, but just want to say in general, this is correct. Particularly under prior GM Bill Stoneman, the Angels were WAY too chintzy with moving their prospects, and these same prospects constantly then underperformed. Although to be fair, they did move Kotchman for Teixeira, so that worked out, and although Kendrick hasn't hit the numbers he was projected for, he is a functionally solid player who could still get better. They also had Adenhart, who seemed on his way to becoming the top line pitcher he was projected to be when he was killed, and he was another one the Angels refused to part with. All that said, Wood and McPherson in particular are poster children for holding on to prospects too long. The Angels could have shipped Wood and Kendrick and one of their pitchers to the Marlins for Miggy Cabrera for instance before the Tigers deal, but felt that the price was too high.

I wish one player could get the Twins over the hump against the Yankees but I dont know who that player is. They are simply lost when playing them. Their great defense goes in the tank, they cant hit, and their bullpen which is normally decent decides to start sucking when the Yankees come to town. They are beaten before the games are played more often than not. Its like watching a different team every year when they play the Yankees. Last edited by jbergey22 : 10-19-2010 at 05:05 PM. |

In other news fucking LaRussa is our manager another year.
Doesn't he have a family to spend time with or something? Another year of batting the pitcher 8th and Franklin as our closer... good fucking grief. |

What's better than another year of LaRussa? LaRussa and no Dave Duncan. There are rumors that letting go the bullpen guy is possibly the first move toward Duncan not returning.

This means Rasmus has to be traded, doesn't it? A 24 year old hitter with his talent level should draw some major interest I would think.

Is Wilson going for the Billy Mays-meets-Serj Tankian look?

And perhaps the Twins will eventually beat the Yankees... in 2017.

I thought they added video replay for fan interference on home runs in the playoffs/

They did, for some stupid reason, they decided to not even check the replay. I thought that one could have gone either way.

What an absolute joke. How can you not look at that HR again? The same ump who was so good last night absolutely blows a call and they don't get replay to look at it. Unbelievable. Hands were over the wall and made contact with the glove. That's an out. Not a HR.
The Yankees don't have enough advantages, MLB and the umpires have to let every ball toward the RF wall be a HR. Get replay Selig and stop making your sport be a laughing stock. Asshole |
