Fun time-waster

Really interesting to see what has been published in books at different times - this tool searches all the books in Google Books for the phrase or phrases you specify:

Google Labs - Books Ngram Viewer

Trout has decreased since its popularity in around 1885 peaked.

Funny to see hits for 'Ginormous' back in the 40s

For some reason, the word crabcake, after seeing a steady rise since 1970, completely tanked after 2000 and is falling steadily.

I will not accept the increase in the popularity of banning.

Also, a similar tool that could search the web for various memes and catchphrases would be awesome.

'fuck' is awesome.. Used from 1800-1820.. then nothing until around 1950.

Of course, looks like the F should be an S based on things like this -

A little further experience teaches the young animal to fuck by absorption, as well as by com- ... And puppies, though they know how to fuck like other animals from their previous experience in swallowing, and in respiration ; yet ar.e

Booger: Pretty flat until the mid 1920s and then it really took off. Had a big dip in the 1960s, but, recovered nicely in the mid 1980s and is still climbing.

Jedi: Many peaks and valleys since 1820 (Yes 1820) and then saw a HUGE spike in 1860ish. As of 2000, Jedi has not reached its biggest peak set back in the 1860s.

Jedikooter: Sadly, is flatlined.

I thought US states would be pretty consistent, but no, look at Texas. Boom in the 1940s, then a steady decline until 1990 or so - now it is climbing but still nowhere near 1940.

The older Jedi seems to all be books of Shakespeare's work, or about him.

Oh wow. I did not look at what books were related to the word. Having not read any Shakespeare, in what context and how is the word Jedi being used? If you know.

It looks like in some older books, they have intermittent little words between the lines, maybe stage directions, and one of them is cursive Aedi, which must be getting mistranslated.

Haha! Oh, they excel at that...from a certain point of view.

Well, that would make sense then. I think there is a fudge factor built into the google tool, so I can totally see that. Hmmm...Shakespeare does Star Wars, I wonder how the dialog would be if he did it?

A few changes turn Tybalt from Romeo and Juliet into Greedo.

What, drawn blaster, and talk of peace! I hate the word,
As I hate hell, the Rebellion, and thee:
Have at thee, coward!
