Awww, it's cold and sad down here in last place.

Fournier No-Hits St Cloud
Wednesday, August 27th, 2053: Is it better to be good -- or lucky? After his 5-0 no-hitter over the St Cloud Raindrops he responded, "I don't know," said Plantana's Stephen Fournier with a grin. "To do what I did, I guess it takes both."

On his historic day at Pirates Park Fournier made good pitches the entire game, fanned 5 and had 4 walks. When the Raindrops hit the ball hard, they hit it right at someone for an out.

But that's how you get a no-hitter -- a lot of skill mixed with a little luck.

This year Fournier has gone 12-6 with an ERA of 3.59 and has 82 strikeouts in 155.1 innings.

Fournier's no-hitter is the first in FOOL-X in two seasons and the first for a Plantana pitcher in 4 seasons.

Lions Maldonado Named RL's Best Pitcher
Monday, September 1st, 2053: The Spring Lions owe Fernando Maldonado a lot for his performance this past month. One of the league's most dominant starters in August, Maldonado tore up the opposition with a fine 4-0 mark on his way to the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award.

"When you're pitching this well," analyzed Maldonado, "it's a lot easier to come to the park. I don't judge my performance by the stats, I judge it -- the team judges it -- by the score of the game. I could say I'm tossing electric stuff right now and that would go over big. But if I toss that same stuff -- exact same pitch selection and location -- and they bang me around tomorrow, I was awful. That's the way baseball is."

It was Maldonado who did the banging in August as he tossed up 34 strikeouts in 37.2 innings, holding opponents to a .229 average and posting a 2.87 ERA.

To date this season Maldonado sports a 12-8 mark with a 3.64 ERA in 26 starting assignments. He has held the opposition to a .274 batting average and has 125 strikeouts in 153.1 innings.

Mooney Tabbed as August's Starter of the Month

Monday, September 1st, 2053: There was nobody finer on the mound in August and Doug Mooney cruised to the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award today.

He was 3-0 with a 0.73 ERA while piling up 46 strikeouts in 37 innings and holding opposing hitters to a .169 batting average.

On the year Mooney has compiled a 11-11 mark with a 3.77 ERA.

Steele Crowned Top RL Hitter in August
Monday, September 1st, 2053: Free agent-to-be Ben Steele has inflated his asking price over the past 30 days by winning the Republic League Batter of the Month.

In August, the 32-year-old Spring first baseman hit .382 with 6 home runs and 25 RBIs.

If he keeps putting numbers like that up, he could be hauling in a big wad of cash at this time next year.

This season Steele has 24 home runs and a .299 batting average.

CL Best Hitter Trophy Goes to Lee
Monday, September 1st, 2053: Fans, friends and family were cheering today when Leonard Lee received August's Continental League Batter of the Month Award.

Lee stung the ball all month, posting a .437 batting average with 6 home runs, 16 RBIs and 31 runs scored.

Lee has a .307 average and a .405 on-base percentage for the year. He has picked up 154 hits, 33 home runs and driven in 87 runs.

August's Outstanding RL Rookie Announced
Monday, September 1st, 2053: Whenever Naps center fielder António Cuevas stepped into the batter's box last month, the 23-year-old meant business. With his .309 average he virtually ran away with the Republic League Rookie of the Month Award.

He collected 34 hits in August with 2 home runs, 13 RBIs and 27 runs scored.

Cuevas is currently hitting at a .282 pace with 6 home runs and 59 RBIs.

August's Top CL Rookie Named

Monday, September 1st, 2053: The premier first-year player in the Continental League last month was Juan Aquino. Chicago's center fielder put up some big-time numbers in August to haul in the Rookie of the Month Award.

Aquino hit at a .286 clip while collecting 1 home run, 12 RBIs and scoring 13 runs in 29 games.

In the current season, Aquino has put up a .248 batting average with 115 hits, 5 home runs, 57 RBI and scored 64 runs.

Yep, the great Garrett Sweeney, the last pitcher in FOOL-X to get 250 wins in his career, and 9th all time in total career wins finished his great career in Plantana. His two seasons for the Pirates were less than stellar, with a combined 18-32 record, but one of those wins was 2049 when he No-hit Chicago

Las Vegas has clinched a playoff spot!

Chicago has a magic number of 4
Washington has a magic number of 6

Oshawa and Plantana are both still mathematically alive in the playoff hunt as well.

With two games left in the season, the standings are:

CL:

Chicago 89-71 (Clinched a playoff spot and homefield advantage in the CLCS)
Oshawa 86-74
Washington 84-76
Plantana 84-76

Oshawa has two games @ St. Cloud
Washington has two games at home vs St. Louis
Plantana has two games @ Stafford.

If Oshawa wins one game, or Washington AND Plantana both lose at least one game, then Oshawa clinches a playoff spot.
If Oshawa loses both games, and either Washington or Plantana win Both games, there will be a tie to determine which team makes the playoffs.

RL:

Las Vegas 102-58
Ann Arbor 102-58

Las Vegas has two games left at Cleveland
Ann Arbor has two games left at New York

The new file is up!

Playoffs run tomorrow. Deadline for exports tomorrow will be moved back to 12 noon ET. That should give everyone 5 extra hours for uploads due to the late sim today.

Goodluck to the other playoff teams!

Chicago's run is sadly on it's last legs. Salaries are getting too high, and each year I have more and more players leaving without any good draft picks or money to replace them. With ALOT of luck Chicago can win the unprecidented back to back to back to back titles before the wheels completely come off the bus!...I don't like my chances though as Oshawa, Vegas and especially Ann Arbor look too powerful.

Hopefully the playoffs are as intense as the regular season was!

A 3.32 ERA from Cardoza is "stopped showing effort"? Although at 22 million bucks, I suppose nothing but a 1.12 ERA would be worth it.

Tough crowd!

Yeah, I think you get the idea on this one. Nothing bad about a 3.32 ERA... unless its after a 2.61 ERA the year before and then signing a 22mil/year contract.

If you are going to be 1/3rd of a team's salary cap, you need to be good for at least 1/3rd of the wins they need. (well maybe not 30 wins all by themselves, but you need to be pretty dynamite). Cardoza was definitely an above average pitcher this year, but not dynamite.

I'm sure you guys have had this discussion a million times...

But it's interesting to see if teams are going with a 4-man or 5-man rotation. Looks like three teams did it this year - us, NY, and Chicago. I would think that in a league where you don't have to worry about injuries, more teams would use it.

Then I see how my starters are only going 5-6 innings per start and realize that it might not be a good idea.

Yeah, I think the collective wisdom over the seasons has been something along the lines of:

2-3 really great starters, very bad #5 starter and alot of bullpen depth = go with shorter rotation. (Some teams have even tried 3-mans at times).

If you don't have a deep bullpen, or a huge drop off between starter #3 - 4 - 5, then just stick with a deeper rotation.

There have been some very successful dynasties that ran with 4 man rotations. When I used to run a team before I took on commish duties, I almost always used a 5- man rotation myself and had some pretty ok success with that.

I think I will be trying a 4-man rotation in Waikiki next season. I should have a pretty deep bullpen, and a very thin rotation so going without a fifth starter might be my best option. The nice thing about this game is that there are many different ways to be successful, and I think this is another example of that

I have had decent success and epic failure with both a 4 and 5 man rotation.
Like it's been said, it all depends on your team. If you have a very strong bullpen, then a 4 man rotation can work.
I once tried a two man rotation (two stud starters capped at 50 pitches) and a 10 men bullpen...That..Was...UGLY....i forget if it was FOOL or FOOLX though.

edit; my bad...that wasn't FOOL, that was in another league i was in back in OOTP9....point still stands though, it didn't work

With a 2-man rotation, I would expect plenty of starts by your relievers.

No matter what type of order you set, OOTP will refuse to start a pitcher if they are beyond a certain point of exhaustion.
