Anyone played Pride of Nations? (Paradox)

I saw this game had just been released on Steam, and couldn't resist giving it a try, as it was only $20:

Here's the blurbs:

Pride of Nations is a turn-based historical strategy game set in the colonial era of the 19th century, where the player takes control of a country and guides it through industrialization, military conquest, and colonization.

Pride of Nations follows such successful historical strategy games as Birth of America, American Civil War, Napoleon's Campaigns, and Wars in America.Immerse yourself in realistic historical gameplay set on a global map:

Play as the world’s Great Powers between 1850 and 1920
Lead one of eight different countries, each with their own personality and agenda: USA, Great Britain, Germany, France, Japan, Russia, Austria-Hungary, and Italy
Experience the most original diplomacy model ever created for a grand strategy game
Explore a revolutionary system for building armies and fleets
Fight against a strong AI through a number of new game mechanisms
Battle it out with others in multiplayer with a new simultaneous turn-based engine
Engage in a detailed world economy with realistic components

And if you buy before next Monday, you get the free DLC:Purchase before June 14th at 10AM Pacific Time and receive the Spanish-American War 1898 DLC for Free!

This action packed scenario covers the 10 months of the ‘Splendid Little War’ fought between the USA and Spain.

Downloading and installing now, we'll see how it goes.

Is it a clone of HOI?

Looks like an AEGOD game rather than a HOI/VICKY game. each turn is half a month.

This was announced before Paradox bought out AOD. Honestly I thought they would kill this project as it was competition for Vicky 2, but I guess the extreme delay and less than stellar reviews for Vicky 2 make it profitable to release.

I wish they would merge the two projects at some point, but I doubt that will happen.

Let us know how you like it. I haven't touched Vicky II in a few months (waiting for the patching process to finish and then see what modders do with it for now) and this sounds like it could be good. Plus it's cheap.

It's a close race between Vicky2 and HOI3 for most disappointing Paradox release. That's why I'm very pessimistic about Crusader Kings 2.

I read an interesting post at Quarter to Three (Tom Chick's blog) about it, so I may give it a shot, but don't know if I have brainpower for the Heart's of Iron type games anymore.

I just went through the tutorials quickly. A few things.

1) You can't play as any nation that you want like typical PI games. In the Grand Campaign, you get UK, USA, France, Prussia (later Germany), Russia, Japan, Piedmont (later Italy) and Austria. There are a handful of scenarios where you choose from a few nations and the time is limited, much like most other AGEOD games.

2) It's turn based, not "real" time. One turn = 2 weeks in the grand campaign. It might be shorter in the scenarios.

3) The economy is a bit different. Instead of everything you make going out onto the world market, you have to actively trade with other nations. There is no world market. You can set buy orders for goods that can be fulfilled by any nation that can trade with you. Oh yeah, not every nation can trade with you. You need some kind of connection to them.

4) Military and battles are just like previous AGEOD games. Armies meet in the middle of turns, battle it out and you get a report. And if you don't think you have the brain power of HOI, this game will probably make it explode.

5) The game is SUH-LOOWWW. Like very, very slow. Processing turns takes a long time. Loading up the game takes a long time. Seems like the FPS and response time by the game is very low...

Haven't started an actual game yet. Will probably do that tomorrow.

I've only run through the first 10 years of the game, but I think it's great. Very deep game, and the AI seems pretty good. A bit of a steep learning curve, particularly if you're not familiar with AGEOD games, but well worth it. Turn processing is slow, but I cna live with it. Definitely worth the purchase price.
