So, with all the furor over the "missed" or "not missed" call for the perfect game, where is the call for more instant replay? A couple of people mentioned it but out of the 50 or so posts talking about that call.

Again, do you want it right or do you want "the human element" as part of the game?

Unless they decided to use pitch f/x to call balls and strikes there will always be a lot of questionable calls. With so many questionable calls it would make a replay system hard to properly put in place. If it could be added without ruining the flow of the game Id be all for it. As is right now the home run reviews are just too slow of a system. The last thing baseball needs is more breaks in action.

Before video replay could be used for check swings, first MLB would have to come up with a definition of a check swing.

I'm all in favor of instant replay, but to me a check swing falls in the category of judgment call and shouldn't be reviewable. That's not only a judgment call, but to review it would require placement of cameras just for that purpose, because the angle can greatly influence your perception of it after the fact. That's like pass interference to me - you have to leave it up to judgment and trust that you've got good referees/umps. That's really where MLB needs to grow a pair and start cracking down - too many shitty excuses for umpires.

I like the idea you have of only reviewing non judgment calls but I think the bigger problem with the umping is the judgment calls. They cant seem to stay consistent.

I'm for review, but only in specific instances. Right now, I'm not sure what all those instances would be, but I do know that I don't think I want balls and strikes to be "instant replayable." Unless they came out with some type of tech to put a chip in a ball, without altering the integrity of the ball, that could instantly call it a ball and strike, but is that even possible?? I would like to see a consistent strike zone where umpires are under much more pressure to call it correct. I am accepting of missed calls on balls and strikes but not the inconsistency we currently have. Just use a system similar to Pitch F/x and have umpires be held to a higher standard. Give them weekly job performance reviews or something.

For everything else, though, I don't understand why there can't be somebody in the booth that can be in constant radio contact with an umpire and if a situation arises he can radio down the correct call within a minute.

I haven't checked all the complaints about the game, but a few weeks ago an umpire told me it is just intent. It has nothing to do with breaking the wrist, how far the bat is, etc, it's the implied intent of a swing. Of course I told him that was a bit silly, but he said it's one of the few "judgement" calls an ump has to make.

Haha, yeah no wonder they stuggle with that call. It would seem their intent on that was the same for all instances. Oh the pitch looks good, maybe not I better not swing, too late.

I can tell you that Andre Either had a swing that looked identical to the check swing in question, and he was punched out for it too.

Agreed. I really like the Mets for Ron Darling. I think he adds a ton to the game and gives some real insight and not just stupid bland commentary.

Can't comment on the Mets, but Kruk / Kuip + Jon Miller and Dave Flemming on radio are the best crew in the business, from my limited experience (Boston, Pittsburgh). Just great guys. Kruk is more of a homer, but Kuiper is perhaps my favorite analyst in all of sports; and Jon Miller is IMO, better than Vin Scully (I know, I know, strike me down and all that ).

The doubleheader was scheduled when Sunday's game was postponed. Combined with the weather, not many teams would do well for the morning game.

I finally got around to watching Ken Burns' 10 Inning and towards the end, Joe Torre said that there has to be light at the end of the tunnel because baseball is too beautiful. I am very happy that were are now in the light and that the awfulness, repulsiveness and obseneness of the Steroids Era has passed.

White Sox have the most obnoxious, annoying commentators in all of baseball. Needless to say, I make liberal use of the mute button when I manage to catch a game.

Jon Miller has always been one of the best. I always loved listening to him and Brooks Robinson call games when I was 12-14 or so.

I get annoyed at times by the O's radio guys. Fred Manfra pauses too much when he is talking.

At what point does a losing streak go from depressing to comical to hoping there's some sort of futility record broken?

Yeah, Rany's taking a powder again.

I know it's maddening to follow a team this inept but sometimes you just have to back off a little. However, if you're writing a blog about X, you can't just take a vacation from X. You have to find lighter things to talk about or whatnot.

Dunno if this has been mentioned before, but here's a great example of the ways in which MLB doesn't "get it" in terms of marketing the way the NFL does:

I have the MLB.com At Bat app for my iPhone. I opted for the free version. I don't get any video replays or real-time streaming video or audio - OK, I get that. But I can't even get a box score through the app. How does this make any sense?

Hello MLB - there's this thing called the "internet" - I can go to any number of sports news websites and get up to the second live box scores for free via the browser on my phone, but you want me to give you $15 to view those box scores on your app?

Compare and contrast this with the NFL's app - unless they have changed it this year, I could get live box scores of games via that app, because the NFL isn't stupid - they know I can get that info free any number of places, and they'd rather have my eyeballs on their app with their ads embedded.

When the fuck is MLB going to get a clue when it comes to marketing...

This is the same MLB that doesn't allow clips on youtube because they want to force people to go to MLB.com for highlights. They don't have a damn clue when it comes to marketing so I'm not surprised.

Braves send Jair Jurjjens to AAA to see if he can get things sorted out.

Is he hurt or something? It seems a bit unusual that his velocity has just dropped 3mph in the past 2 years. Its not like he has much to work with in that department anyway. Perhaps the Braves are trying to hide him in AAA in hopes of hiding him so they can eventually find a sucker like the Twins to take him.

If his fastball is only 88 at this point, why hide him? Terry Ryan is probably salivating on line two as we speak.

I'm about to go see the Pirates and Rockies. I predict that I'll be shoving sharp objects into my face by the 4th inning. Look for me in the headlines tomorrow!
