IWS #193 RESULTS...Long Live the King

1. Name a fictional monarch.

20 King Arthur
4 Burger King
2 Old King Cole
1 King Kong
1 King Joffrey
1 King James
1 King Ralph
1 King Robert Baratheon
1 Queen Amidala
1 stark
1 Dairy Queen
1 Emperor Palpatine
1 Hamlet
1 King Lear

An eliminator right off the bat. I thought this one would have a better spread. That said, I probably would have gone with King Arthur.

2. Name a real person who is not a monarch, but has a royal moniker or nickname.

12 Lebron James (King James)
7 Elvis (the King)
5 Prince
3 Queen Latifah
2 Prince Fielder
2 King Kong
1 Anthony Hopkins
1 BB King
1 Don King
1 Martin Luther King Jr.
1 Michael Jackson
1 Sir Paul McCartney

Pretty decent range of responses. I thought LeBron would get some serious run given the playoff timing, and I was not surprised by Elvis. I was a little surprised Michael Jackson and MLK did not get more of a response (MLK particularly given the later question).

3. The Kansas City Royals host the All Star Game this year. Name a famous All Star Game Moment.

17 Pete Rose barrels over Ray Fosse
9 Game ends in a tie.
3 Cal Ripken's 2001 ASG performance
2 John Kruk is scared of Randy Johnson
2 Ted Williams Victory Lap around Fenway in Golf Cart
1 Stan Musial walk off home run
1 Reggie Jackson 1971 Home Run
1 Mike Piazza throws bat at Roger Clemens
1 Bab Ruth Home Run in 1933

I have to say I didn't see this one coming at all. I would have gone with the tie game. My second pick didn't even make the list (Fred Lynn's grand slam). But Stupid loves him some Charlie Hustle. And, Stupid remembered that the Clemens-Piazza in the World Series.

4. Finish the phrase: King of _____.

12 Queens
7 the Hill
5 Pain
3 Pop
3 Kings
2 Beers
2 England
1 the Mountain
1 Hearts
1 Rock

Stupid likes sitcoms (even if animated) more than music. I was thinking King of Pop or King of the Hill when I wrote the question.

5. The Martin Luther King Memorial recently opened in DC. What is another well known DC landmark?

21 Washington Monument
10 White House
5 Lincoln Memorial
1 Vietnam Wall

Our other eliminator question. Coin flip for me between the two.

6. Name a famous palace/home of a king, other than Buckingham.

12 Versailles
5 Graceland
4 Camelot
3 King's Landing
2 Forbidden Palace
2 Windsor Castle
1 Neuschwanstein
1 Kremlin
1 Great Pyramids
1 Buckingham Palace
1 Winter Palace
1 the Louvre
1 The Taj Mahal
1 The White House
1 Caesar's Palace

I had Versailles in mind when writing the question. What is interesting to me in seeing the responses is that only 2 of the wannabe Stupids who answered Graceland also had Elvis as a response to #2. I would have thought those would have gone together. And Camelot not as strong as one might have thought, given how King Arthur ran away with it as a fictional monarch.

Stupid is not nearly as nerdy as I thought (yet 90% of the board is hot for Portman...). Not that Arthur would have come to me (Lear - my first thought - yes. Arthur, no. Go figure.)

Number two got me. I spent the most time on this question, debating whether to go Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Elton John or Dame Judy Dence.

Obviously I was thinking completely differently than Stupid

Didn't occur to me either, but makes a lot of sense, given the theme.

I transposed the answer. The IWS Staff regrets the error.

Tell me about it.

Alas, I couldn't get past the first question. I knew King Kong was no good. I hit 2, 3, & 5.

I had Versailles in mind, but answered Forbidden Palace when I turned things in. I'm not sure why.

I figured King of Beers would do better though. Surprised by that one.

I earned my peasant class ranking on this one. Can't believe how obtuse I was on this one. I completely whiffed on most of the questions. Just couldn't get my arms around Stupid on this one ... and I consider most of my answers stupid.

Sucks when you match the top answer on 4 of 6...and the other two, you score 1's with really crappy answers.

On a serious note - Wiki sums it up pretty well.

Quote:
King Arthur is a legendary British leader of the late 5th and early 6th centuries, who, according to medieval histories and romances, led the defence of Britain against Saxon invaders in the early 6th century. The details of Arthur's story are mainly composed of folklore and literary invention, and his historical existence is debated and disputed by modern historians.[2]
