And, the most important question: did he actually play the games or just spend a ton of money putting it together only to sell it off?

Sounds like most of those games are factory sealed, so I think this was just an obsessive pursuit.

If the transaction goes through, eBay makes 100K.

This reminds me of an Adam Savage TED Talk where he describes his pursuit in making a perfect replica of the Maltese Falcon and something else (forgot what it was). The message of the talk was that the end result wasn't the point of these pursuits, but the pursuit itself was.
