How did he get in there with that gear on? Maybe this will end the idiocy of people dressing up in costume for movies.

How do you kick open an emergency door? They open out. Ive worked at plenty of theaters, those things are near impossible to open from the outside unless it's left open.

Theatres aren't especially well designed to get out of these days in a scenario like this with stadium seating either. I don't to go Aurora for much of anything ever, but it does seem like everything about it was planned for a particular purpose.

So sad.

Hard to say. At least one witness has said that he left the theater through that emergency door and then came back.

A 24-year man was taken into custody, but not all of the outlets are reporting on this for whatever reason.

Probably the best local source for news on this at the moment:

Shooter identified as James Holmes, 24 years old, white male, pretty clean criminal record thus far, no connections to terrorism reported as of yet.

Sad, very sad.

I'm usually a very rational person, but I can't say that I won't have a twinge of anxiety next time I'm in a movie theater.

This is where my bad memory fails me.

Did this happen in a batman movie? If so, how has the media not picked up on that yet?

Yes, midnight showing of The Dark Knight. They've mentioned it in every article, but haven't begun theorizing yet and are still (seemingly) in fact-finding mode. So that's why those connections haven't been pieced together yet. But I imagine it'll happen here before too long unless they get more detail on his thinking or whatever.

Nevermind the reddit link.

A sports radio guy in Denver posted about his friend, a girl who was working at a Denver as a sports journalist who got killed and it was really eerie because her twitter feed was literally updated 20 minutes before the show waiting for it and then...that was it.

Side note, one of the wounded victims posted on reddit: i am one of the 50 wounded in the aurora theatre shooting. here are a few photos of my very lucky but nonethless terrifying brush with death. my thoughts go out to those less fortunate than me. : WTF

Sorry, I should be more clear.

Did someone go on a killing spree in a theatre in one of the batman movies?

Someone was saying they were imitating a batman movie, but I don't remember a scene like that unless we're talking about the Joker in the bank in the first Dark Knight?

He walked into a theatre that was getting ready to screen the last Batman movie from the exit door presumably, threw in tear gas, shot in the air once and then starting shooting randomly at people. This is from witness accounts from the Denver TV station's links that I posted above.

We all get that, the question was "was he imitating a scene that occurred in one of the movies"?

You're killing me DC - I think you're awake too early .

See the stuff above.

"Am I the only one thinking he's trying (tried) to model the Batman movie(s)?"

I'm trying to figure out how this models a batman movie. Seems like a stretch of logic to me, but I may be missing a connection.

Unless he'd seen a pre-release of the film or was in the other screening that was going on prior to this one...that seems extremely unlikely.

More like a bit of freelancing on his part.

No and I suspect we'll get some of that over the next week: "He's just like Gotham's villains trying to show that when you idolize crazy vigilantes, you get crazier villains." Except, it's not even close to the case. Guy was a nut and off his rocker. And not much we could have done to prevent this one short of making every movie theater a TSA zone. So let's make some building code changes for the better so that escapes are easier and mourn for the victims.

{sarcasm}I'm confident in our media's ability to not blow this completely out of proportion and miss the point.{/sarcasm}

He could have come in unequipped, went out the exit door, had the door oh so slightly ajar, got his stuff, and come back in.

Tragic.

One thing I have to ask myself it WTF is a 6 year old, 9 year old and 3 month old doing there. Seems a lot of really young kids there.

Regardless, tragic and senseless.

Yikes, I hope this doesn't turn into a racial thing. I don't know if that's a function of where the theater was/who frequents it, or the reason he chose the theater or victims.

I did hear a witness interview where the guy talked about how he thought the theater was unsafe and didn't like going there. But he didn't explain why.

Where's that quote from? Also, one of the victims was a pretty redheaded girl (the aspiring sportswriter referenced earlier).

Looking at some of the video there were plenty of white folks streaming out of the theater. Deadspin features an article about one of the victims (young female) and a redditor (white male) posted a picture of himself in the hospital with a gunshot wound.

A fraternity brother and good friend of mine is an Aurora, CO firefighter. He responded to the scene shortly after it happened. I'm sure he'll be a bit shaken up over the whole thing.
