A survey

A woman posted this survey to potential suitors. I thought it was something that might generate some quality replies here. A little less direct than Lathum's survey.

1. Pick one: Marx/Sartre/Plato/huh?

2. Pick one: Dress shirt/flannel shirt/tanktop/no shirt

3. The opera is [a nightmare/a nice way to spend the evening/everything to me, in fact, let's use my season tickets].

4. I have been [tempted by/purchased/are you kidding me? My whole CD collection is made up of] the albums they sell on TV, like "AM Gold" and "Rock Ballads of the 80's"

5. Sloth is to greed as naked mole rat is to _________________.

6. Pick one: Santana/Sting/Sinatra

7. Rush Limbaugh is a) a pompous buffoon, b) sometimes worthy of a listen or c) like a god to me.

8. Constitution or Declaration of Independence?

9. The book or the movie?

10. Egg is to quiche as poetry is to _______________.

My replies to this woman:

1. Pick one: Marx/Sartre/Plato/huh? ****

Plato, by process of elimination. Marx misses the fundamental desire of man to be rewarded for effort, and to pick how he uses his reward. Sartre, along with the rest of the existentialists, is so bleak (and I don't know much about his philosophy.) I dig the ideal of the Republic even though expecting the benevolence of philosopher kings is something to be a tad skeptical about. Also, as a matter of taste, I prefer the Socratic method to the Scientific method.

2. Pick one: Dress shirt/flannel shirt/tanktop/no shirt ****

How about sweater over a tee? Clothes may make the man, but I can afford to pick what I like and I like comfort.

3. The opera is [a nightmare/a nice way to spend the evening/everything to me, in fact, let's use my season tickets]. ****

I want to like opera. I try to like opera. I even like some opera on CD (Wagnerian type stuff - romantic and sweeping). What I can't stomach is live opera. I know, I am missing out on something vital and moving. Perhaps someday I will acquire a taste for it.

4. I have been [tempted by/purchased/are you kidding me? My whole CD collection is made up of] the albums they sell on TV, like "AM Gold" and "Rock Ballads of the 80's" ****

S A T U R D A Y Night... Not really. I have exceptionally broad musical tastes that range from punk to classical.

5. Sloth is to greed as naked mole rat is to _________________. ****

Honey bee. But I looked that one up. My natural response, other than to look it up, would have been something absurd and perhaps irreverent. Or I may have just said mouse.

6. Pick one: Santana/Sting/Sinatra ****

Sting with or without the Police? No matter, I would go with Frank. That man just breathed suave.

7. Rush Limbaugh is a) a pompous buffoon, b) sometimes worthy of a listen or c) like a god to me. ****

Rush takes a valid point of view beyond the point of absurdity. IMHO the ditto-heads grab the kernel of truth and use that to buy into the infotainment crud Rush loads on to it.

8. Constitution or Declaration of Independence? ****

A lifetime of discussion distilled into a few words. I will take the Declaration, which is the soul of the nation.

9. The book or the movie? ****

The book, of course.

10. Egg is to quiche as poetry is to _______________.

Song.

Plato. Dana was really hot before her addiction and was mostly hot until her untimely death. If we're talking about after this then I'll vote Sartre.

2. Pick one: Dress shirt/flannel shirt/tanktop/no shirt

[for me] no shirt.

[about me] full plate armor.

3. The opera is [a nightmare/a nice way to spend the evening/everything to me, in fact, let's use my season tickets].

a great browser.

4. I have been [tempted by/purchased/are you kidding me? My whole CD collection is made up of] the albums they sell on TV, like "AM Gold" and "Rock Ballads of the 80's"

Sounds of the 70's destroys Rock Ballads of the 80's

5. Sloth is to greed as naked mole rat is to _________________.

ice weasel

6. Pick one: Santana/Sting/Sinatra

Which Sinatra and for what purpose. If it's at all ribald I'm going for Nancy Sinatra. Nothing else really matters so I'll go pickem.

7. Rush Limbaugh is a) a pompous buffoon, b) sometimes worthy of a listen or c) like a god to me.

Why can't a god like me be someone occasionally worth a listen but is basically a pompous buffoon? In fact, if the god was like me then this would indeed be what he is. I vote for d) all of the above so include it you imperfect fuck.

8. Constitution or Declaration of Independence?

I'd rather have a strong constitution. I'm entering middle age, have been independant for a long time and don't want to have to eat bran all the time just to be able to take a decent crap. Constitution beyond a doubt.

9. The book or the movie?

yes.

10. Egg is to quiche as poetry is to _______________.

romance.

Not bad but I think you left off a question:

11.) Cocky and/or funny?

You took my answer. Where the analogy breaks down though is that quiche is not a necessity.

Which coincidentally and cynically and exactly why I chose romance over song.

Rolling paper of the 60's covers Rock Ballads of the 80's.

Re: A survey

1. Pick one: Marx/Sartre/Plato/huh?

Huh? My thinking is not evoved enough to have read any of these philosophical thinkers. I have lived life satisfactorily nonetheless, but at some point wouldn't mind learning more about philosophy.

2. Pick one: Dress shirt/flannel shirt/tanktop/no shirt

Flannel. I prefer to be warm and comfortable.

3. The opera is [a nightmare/a nice way to spend the evening/everything to me, in fact, let's use my season tickets].

A nightmare. If I ever get on Jeopardy it will be my downfall.

4. I have been [tempted by/purchased/are you kidding me? My whole CD collection is made up of] the albums they sell on TV, like "AM Gold" and "Rock Ballads of the 80's"

Tempted by. Extremely tempted by.

5. Sloth is to greed as naked mole rat is to _________________.

selflessness

6. Pick one: Santana/Sting/Sinatra

Sinatra.

7. Rush Limbaugh is a) a pompous buffoon, b) sometimes worthy of a listen or c) like a god to me.

b). Agree that Rush makes some interesting points but goes overboard with others.

8. Constitution or Declaration of Independence?

Declaration. It took guts.

9. The book or the movie?

The book, though I'll usually take the time for neither.

10. Egg is to quiche as poetry is to _______________.

Song.

1. Sartre - Marx was a materialistic weanie who overvalued the wrong things and put too much emphasis on historical trends; Plato was alright, but his conception of a society run by philosopher kings was sheer idiocy; Sartre pretty much rocked - although I enjoy reading Camus's fiction more.

2. Dress Shirt - only because I dislike the other options - I'd prefer a sweater.

3. Nightmare - opera sucks.

4. Tempted by - only because, "would never, ever buy" was not an option.

5. Clothed mouse - like from Stuart Little.

6. Sting - only because he is the lesser of 3 evils - he was once pretty good.

7. Pompous buffoun - only becuase, "complete waste of air and resources" was not an option.

8. Constitution - a close call, but the Bill of Rights and the structure of government where pretty good calls (although you have to ignore the bad parts of the original - slave counting, etc.).

9. Both - I couldn't live without books and movies and I usually see/read both when possible.

10. My ass - only because eggs, quiche, poetry, and my ass all stink.

1. Pick one: Marx/Sartre/Plato/huh?

huh? Philosophy is for people who want to work at St. Louis University. (PING: Wayne)

2. Pick one: Dress shirt/flannel shirt/tanktop/no shirt

I love my flannel dress shirt

3. The opera is [a nightmare/a nice way to spend the evening/everything to me, in fact, let's use my season tickets].

something I listen to when my internet radio isn't working with the cool stations

4. I have been [tempted by/purchased/are you kidding me? My whole CD collection is made up of] the albums they sell on TV, like "AM Gold" and "Rock Ballads of the 80's"

The only albums I have listened to in the past year are from my Singers & Songwriters Collection from Time-Life Books.

5. Sloth is to greed as naked mole rat is to _________________.

carelesness?

6. Pick one: Santana/Sting/Sinatra

Sinatra

7. Rush Limbaugh is a) a pompous buffoon, b) sometimes worthy of a listen or c) like a god to me.

Worthy of a listen as long as you take some of it with a grain of salt (figuratively, not literaly).

8. Constitution or Declaration of Independence?

Declaration of Indepenence. Judges screw up the constitution.

9. The book or the movie?

The book (if I have time) before the movie.

10. Egg is to quiche as poetry is to ____________.

limericks.

1. Pick one: Marx/Sartre/Plato/huh?

Umm... let me get back to you on that one. At first glance I'd have to go with Plato, because I like Greek food better than German or French food.

2. Pick one: Dress shirt/flannel shirt/tanktop/no shirt

It all depends on the situation, doesn't it? If I'm trying to impress someone, then obviously a dress shirt. If I'm going for comfort, then I'll go with a t-shirt and flannel shirt.

3. The opera is [a nightmare/a nice way to spend the evening/everything to me, in fact, let's use my season tickets].

Nightmare. I also can't stand ballet.

4. I have been [tempted by/purchased/are you kidding me? My whole CD collection is made up of] the albums they sell on TV, like "AM Gold" and "Rock Ballads of the 80's"

tempted. I actually own a lot of compilation cd's, but I've not purchased any from the television.

5. Sloth is to greed as naked mole rat is to _________________.

I hate these cutesy questions. I guess the literal answer would be sweater-wearing mole rat.

6. Pick one: Santana/Sting/Sinatra

Sinatra. Can't stand Santana, never got into Sting. If we're going with "artists beginning with the letter S", I'd pick Sam Cooke over these three.

7. Rush Limbaugh is a) a pompous buffoon, b) sometimes worthy of a listen or c) like a god to me.

Professionally? He's like a god. He's the epitome of talk show success. Personally? He's like every other pundit... sometimes worthy of a listen.

8. Constitution or Declaration of Independence?

You wouldn't have the Constitution without the Declaration of Independence, and luckily the judiciary hasn't completely screwed over the original intent of the Declaration of Independence.

9. The book or the movie?

Gotta be the book. You can use your imagination, you get the original intent of the author, and it's not cut down into a two hour film.

10. Egg is to quiche as poetry is to _______________.

life. Is that sensitive enough for you, chickie? Actually, the only poet I've ever really liked is Robert Frost, and I don't like quiche, so I'm gonna have to pass on this question.
