Official College Football Week 2 Thread

There are no matchups of Top 25 teams this weekend. Texas A&M and Mizzou both have their opening games in their new conference. The Aggies host the Gators and Georgia travels to Columbia. Florida State will see how they match up against Oklahoma State when they take their turn having their way with Savannah State.

Not to keyed up for BYU this week as they are taking on Weber State which again was a rush filler for the schedule when we went independent. It will be on BYUtv which almost everyone should have. I will still watch the game just to see when our scrubs go in and how they handle.

Washington travels to Baton Rouge to take on LSU. While I'd love to say the Huskies will give them a fight, I'm afraid the reality is that LSU will be able to run the ball all over us, and on defense overwhelm our OL, negating the effectiveness of Price at QB.

Hope I'm wrong...

Excited about the Mizzou-Georgia game. First game I've been to in almost two years. My business keeps me busy on the weekend in the fall normally. Picked up some great seats in the end zone.

Lots of money going on Mizzou right now. Most Vegas books started Georgia as a 3 1/2 point favorite on Monday. It's now down to 2 or 2 1/2 in all of the major Vegas books.

Can't wait. Dropped my season tickets for the first time in 15 years (first baby on the way in October) and then the GA and Bama tickets start going for outragous amounts. Could have paid for the rest of the games with those two tickets and kept my season tickets for '13. Was able to land a couple from a friend of my brother though to this game. It looks to have the type of crowd that OU game had a few years ago. I think its going to be close and hope we don't lay an egg for our entrance to the SEC.

A guy I work with was a bar and won a pair of tickets on the 45 yard line row 10 for the Mizzou game.

Iowa gets Iowa St. at home. This is the Clowns BCS bowl. I hope Iowa plays better. The O line needs some experience. And fast.

Cincinnati and Pitt meet tonight to kick off this week's games. Will be interesting to see if Pitt can bounce back from a loss to FBS Youngstown State, or if Cincinnati will just run roughshod over them in their opening game of the season.

The largest spread in college football history before this week came in 2007 when Hawaii was a 60-point favorite over Northern Colorado . Hawaii would win that game 63-6, and Northern Colorado would cover.

Did I miss another qualifier in the story that would result in them not including Savannah State's +67.5 vs Ok State last week? OSU covered easily of course.

edit: Got it. Some googling shows that line closed at +58. The opening spread was a record.

This game is so bad I can't think of when I've been more unexcited about a FSU game. Maybe one of those Tebow Florida games where I knew they had no chance.

FSU usually leaves so many points on the field there's no way I'd bet on FSU. I expect that 70 to come down.

Interesting that they used the close as their guidelines, since this line hasn't closed yet.

Yeah but they started slow and the opponent blew a couple of easy scoring chances. Four of the first 6 possessions were either punts after 3 or 4 plays or an INT, along with 2 TDs.

Plus - ESPN's schedules only go back to 2002, so that's as far as I was able to check, but we haven't scored 70 points in a game in the last decade, let alone win by 70 points in a game. We've only scored 60+ points 4 times since 2002 (second time under Jimbo).

Not saying it won't happen, but I wouldn't bet on it happening.

Savannah State struggles against D2 schools, let alone FCS. FSU could beat them by 150 if they wanted to. These spreads come down to how soon the coach pulls back to avoid embarrassing the other school more. OSU could have put up 150 with ease.

Going to Knoxville with my brother tomorrow morning. It'll be my second UT game, his first. He hasn't been back to the area since we moved away in 1990. 4 rows from our sideline!

Just by joining the SEC, Texas A&M has added two national titles and three conference championships.

From the stadium last year:

The national titles are one thing (though the 1919 one seems far less of a reach than the 1927 one), that was so long ago and how did any voters really see these teams often enough to rank them back then? You could probably only see one game in person each week and would have to travel there.

But the part on the conference titles is pretty sad imo:

Quote:
And about those new conference titles:

In 1997, the Aggies finished 6-2 in conference play and faced the 8-0 Nebraska Cornhuskers in the Big XII title game. They lost to the Big Red by a score of 54-15, but that didn’t stop them from claiming their Big 12 South title as a full-fledged conference championship.

They also now claim to have been conference champions in 2010. That’s partially true, but what they fail to mention is that they finished 3rd in a 3-way tie for the Big 12 South crown that season, and didn’t even represent the division in the Big 12 Championship game. But again, why not claim the title? They were close, right?

And Utah State does the "Ice the Kicker" and the Utah Kicker misses the FG, gets a second chance.. and misses it even worse.

IIRC, Nebraska had a bunch of seniors last year so they are inexperienced, it's their first game, and it's the infamous Big Ten/Pac 12 match up although at least for Nebraska it is a shorter trip.

Daughter has a X country meet about 45 minutes away at Forest Park. She runs at 1:25. Iowa plays the hated Clowns at 2:30 on the BTN. Looks like I miss the kickoff. But should be back by the mid 1st quarter.
Im worried about this game. Iowa is young-ish. Esp. on both lines. Getting to the QB will be huge for Iowa today.

Go Hawks!

If they are going to have these ridiculous new helmet rules, at least call them correctly. In the Ohio State game, an OSU player lost his helmet during a kick-off, was blocked to the ground after his helmet came off (15-yard penalty for blocking a player without a helmet), and then he got up and tried to make a tackle (15-yard penalty on him). They only called him for the penalty.

I understand the reason for the rule, but it's ridiculous to think someone's going to stop playing and watch a ball carrier run right past them.

apparently it is also OK to rip off your helmet in celebration after making a stop on 4th and 1 if you play for CFU.

Virginia player got 15 for "continuing in the play" for his helmet coming off while he was making the tackle.

This rule is going to suck if that's how it's called.
