Age Of Empires III?

I couldn't find a thread on it here. Anyone played it? How is it?

It's alright, but I don't think it's aged particularly well. IMHO, for RTS, you can't beat the Total War franchise.

while i´m fast becoming a huge fan of the Total War games (Rome and Medieval II), they are turn based The battles are what really sets them apart though i´d wager (although to be honest, i´d like to have the option to speed things up a little bit there, like play in 2 or 4X speed while merely moving around with troops)

It´s on sale at steam (complete collection) right now as well (guess that triggered the question in the first place )

I liked the game, but now i think it´s sort of a "not quite this, not really that" type of game. For example i liked EUIII better for the added game logic and more in depth style of game (especially the financial and diplomatic aspect).

But it is a good game, definitely.

I picked it up. I doubt my laptop can run it though. We'll see.

In terms of RTS gameplay I'd say StarCraft 2 outs clearly superior to anything else out there, though it had been more a spectator sport for me. That said, Total War does have better campaigns for its blend of RTS and turn based play.

As far as AOE III I can't say too much about it, but Age of Empires Online is a free to play game that it's worth trying out.

I'm definitely looking for RTS. No TBS is going to beat Civ4:BtS for me, I don't think. Is Starcraft space-based, though? I tend to not enjoy sutff that isn't somewhat earth/old-earth based.

Yes it is. If you want an RTS with base building and combat set in the past give Age of Empires Online. You can get it through Steam and GFWL.

If you don't care about latest and greatest then the Age of Mythology spinoff of aoe was fun. Don't know if there's an online community anymore though.

There's also Star Wars galactic battlegrounds.

Researching this made me realize how old I am. Thanks a lot!

So, is AOEIII not any good then and that's why you and others are steering me away from it? I don't care about $0 vs. the $5-$10ish that AOE III costs (I don't recall). That's trivial. Is an older online version of AOE worth my time more than AOE III? That's the important question here. I'd gladly pay more than 10 bucks to get the 2 hours back I might spend screwing around with a crappy game.

I'm not intending to steer you away from it, I just haven't played enough of III to give a recommendation one way or another. I know I and II still hold up well today, though you can't get them through any download services, you need to buy the CDs to get them.

I love-love-loved AOE2, and just picked up AOE3 for $10 over Thanksgiving, but haven't had much time to play around with it yet. If it compares decently to AOE2, it'll be a solid RTS game to play for a couple hours at a stretch as often as you like, with the campaigns and also the scenarios to create new challenges.

I am definitely looking at AoE 3 as well. I loves AoE 2 and was hoping to pick part 3 up cheap as something to fill some time.

Cossacks blows age of empires away, IMO. 8,000 units under your command rather than the limit of what, 300 in AoE? Basically the same game other than that.

Find it here

I spent so much time playing Cho wars back in the day with AOE I. Is that what Age of Empires online is now?

I remember I was apart of a decent clan.

I'm playing Company of Heroes and enjoying it a lot. It's also an RTS but based on the WWII, the campaign is awesome, with all the historical battles.

Dawn of War is based on the same engine but SCI-FI.

Company of Heroes is fantastic.

Total Annihilation is very old but probably my favorite RTS of all time. We played the hell out of that game. I wonder how it would hold up today?
