Thumbs down Ex-gay therapy

Conversion therapy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I'm probably late to the party, but I was unaware this even existed. It's disheartening that parents would do this to their own kid. It immediately brought to mind A Clockwork Orange.

It was in the news during the presidential election when it came out that Michelle Bachmann's husband ran a conversion clinic.

Wow, is that a slanted, misleading Wiki article. It clearly lists many of the abusive, foolish and dangerous practices used by quack "therapists," then clearly creates the impression that's what "conversion therapy" is.

No, that's what it is when it's done WRONG. When it's done by Skinner-esque behaviorists. And I agree, that's outrageous, ineffective and harmful.

I sincerely doubt - though I have no first-hand knowledge - that Wiki's picture of "conversion therapy" is even remotely similar to what Bachmann's husband's clinic practiced.

I don't care to get into another homosexuality argument, particularly not on this board, but I do desire to at least voice the objection that conversion therapy can be approached through psychological and spiritual means, with compassion and care for the patient, and isn't all shock therapy and vomit-inducing.

Jeez. The article is as heavily spun as saying abortion doctors are wicked and evil because coat hangers have been used to do abortions. Yes, they have, but that's when it's done WRONG. You can make the argument that abortion is evil, and you can make the argument that conversion therapy is evil, but not with such broad-brush straw man arguments.

Fair enough. Out of curiosity, why particularly not on this board? Are there boards where you would be slightly more inclined to get into another homosexuality argument?

You go into the cool images thread and get a painful shock before the image is deleted by an undisclosed mod.

I don't care if they do it using cuddly kittens - the concept of such therapy is just WRONG imho ....

It'd be like my kids being forced into therapy to try and remove their English accents, its part of who they are.

You do live in Florida - I'm surprised there's not a law against having a foreign accent...

Bullshit.

Just calling them a patient simply because they're gay is abusive.

It's not the methodology of the "therapy" that people object to revrew, it's the promotion of the fallacy that it is something that

a) can be theraputically treated
b) NEEDS to be theraputically treated

that people find repulsive.

Yeah

I respect the fact that Revrew comes into these threads and gives a different POV, but on this one he is living in the 17th century if he thinks we can cure the gays, regardless of the method.

Are they trying to make gay people find the opposite sex attractive or are they acknowledging that the same-sex attraction will always be there and just trying to prevent acting upon it?

Any of this "therapy" is dumb if you ask me. But thinking you can make a homosexual find the opposite sex attractive deserves a whole other pedestal for ridiculousness.

Well, that's what I meant earlier in my paragraph with the abortion analogy.

This is a respectable argument - you can argue that the therapy itself, however done, is out of line. It's a fair argument, whether one agrees it's correct or not.

I was merely pointing out that by describing only abusive methods used by various wackos, the Wiki article was painting the practice with an unfair light. Creating a straw man, really.

The point is, I don't think conversion therapy is necessarily evil, but I DO think the practices listed in the Wiki article are, and that unfairly clouds the whole argument.

So is all conversion therapy actually trying to change a gay man / woman to not being gay? Or is it helping to teach / guide those who are gay away from engaging in homosexual actions despite their desire to do so (with the idea accepted that their homosexual desires are a part of who they are)?

The first of the two is utterly ridiculous. The second, while I disagree with it, is more understandable from a Christian perspective that does not completely ignore science.

How is this any different than trying to convert someone from "being black?" It's equally repulsive to treat someone like that.

I dunno, if I found love in another mans buttocks, I'd appreciate any help anyone was willing to give me. Although that may be the only roadblock to me being gay, cause I'd quite frankly rather hang out with dudes and would probably be happier married to one. But then there's the whole butt thing, which I just can't commit to. I mean, as I've aged even the cock and balls have become less repulsive to me. Not so much in that I long for them but when I see them I've from time to time found myself thinking "I wouldn't mind touching that or those, or putting any of them in my mouth, if I really liked the dude. Like if he were nice to me and we liked the same stuff and what not, I'd do that for him I suppose". But then I'm taken aback by how much guys object to being touched on their buttholes or having their packages touched in even a joking matter. Calm down man, it's just horseplay.

I always wondered what talk radio had against "The Left."

The best is when you see an interview with a "former" gay man who was "converted" to straight, and he comes off as a combo of Liberace & Rip Taylor all excited about how he's no longer gay. Yeah...

I worked with an actor that had been sent to a facility in Memphis after he came out to his family. After his "treatment" he married a woman. The cast of the play he was in included three gay men, and he wasn't allowed to go anywhere with any of them unless his wife or parents accompanied him.

He may not have been having sex with men, but there was little doubt he wanted to and his family knew that.

I assumed this was a quote from a movie so I actually googled some of it. That was....risky in retrospect. But I didn't find anything. It's a Suicane original.
