In general, I struggle to understand people who have an accent. But boy, is there anything nicer than a girl with a good English accent? Love that!

We have this French lady at work. I can barely understand her. She talks fast, and it's like I'm always translating what she said 5 seconds ago as she continues to talk.

A good accent can make a cute girl so much cuter.

They certainly act like slutty party girls around them

Completely unverifiable, but I would say that British men have the greatest ugliness impact reduced because of accent benefit from American women.

As somebody who's benefited from this over the years, I can say that it's a very real effect. And it is awesome.

I do like some American accents. A nice southern drawl does it for me. Overall though, the Irish accent wins.

I can verify this.

My brother in law is South African and has lived in London for 15 years. His wife, my wifes sister, is WAY cuter than he is.

That being said he is an amazing guy and I love him like a brother, so maybe she cares more about personality than looks.

Hell, I have been in America so long my accent is undetectable, but when women find out I was born there the first question is "Can you talk in that accent?" Of course I say, as I can still nail it perfectly, so I 'talk in that accent' and a completely different look comes over them....It's damn near magical.

As shameless as it is, back when I was single and was at a place I didn't normally frequent, I would spend the evening being authentic. The results as a Brit always far exceeded the American me.

For me I like Aussie accents and some southern accents are very appealing as well.

Yeah, it's funny. I can understand most Asians but almost cannot understand an Indian at all. Have trouble with Germans for whatever reason. I love Irish and Aussies/NZ, as well as spaniards.

Not to get too Henry Higgins here, but there's quite a bit of variety in what's considered an "English" accent or a "Southern" accent.

For example, a British accent on a lady can be very nice, but Cockney ... does nothing for me. Even a turn off.

Similarly, a stereotypical, trailer-park Southern accent does nothing for me, but a Memphis accent ... ooh-la-la.

Asian women with Australian accents. First time I ran into that was a trip to Macau several years ago. There was a very cute Asian woman that we were working with. The first time I saw her I thought "she's cute"; then she started talking and had an Australian accent and suddenly "She's Hot!!!".

Well, biased of course, but I would think Aussie's and their drawn out accents would be fairly easy to understand?

When I would take on the phone to my step mother I would have to have my Dad translate when he came back on, I couldn't understand a damn thing she said with all the slang.

South American != Spanish.

Deal me in on the Australian accent. The British accent, it depends on what type we're talking about.

I also like authentic Spanish accents.

One of the coolest accents I ever heard was a Bolivian accent from a Chinese girl.

Yeah some are most definitely harder than others. For some reason I find women much easier to understand than some of the guys.

My mom's fiance' is from Motherwell, and I can barely understand him. It's the thickest Scottish accent I've ever heard.

My wife was also born in South America and moved to the US as an adult. She has the Peruvian Spanish accent so, according to other LA Spanish speakers, it sounds like she's singing when talking.

And, Yes, Spanish is not Latin American...

Having said this, I still find it difficult to understand a Mexican accent when speaking to them. French, Belgian, German, British Empire, all good, but Mexican just is not good.

a good friend of mine is Scottish and i thought i was pretty good with understanding him, but when i was in Wales, the hotel i was at was full of scottish guys in town for a soccer game...i still dont know what the hell some of them said.

Sorry, to clarify my wife's family is all from Barcelona originally including aunts that still live there, even though she was born in South America.

I watched Bourne Legacy last night and thought of this thread. Rachel Weisz has a very pronounced English accent but she did a flat American accent very well in the movie. While I can see someone with many of the American accent easily doing English, Irish, Hispanic, German, French, etc. (but not Asian with its inflections), how can one turn those European/etc. accents completely off and do flat American?

When I was living in Italy, they told me that when I spoke Italian there was no trace of my Texan/American accent, and they wished they sounded as American when they spoke English. I told them I was simply a parrot, repeating what I heard.

One of my friends that came to visit me in Italy was born and raised in Mexico until she was 10, then moved to the US. She could understand the people speaking Italian, but didn't speak it herself. When we went to Barcelona, she could barely understand their Spanish, due to the heavy Catalan accent.

I used to go out with an American girl. She became a little freaked out when I referred to my 'mates' back home. Apparently it made me sound like some sort of big time European homosexual bigamist.
