What does it take to win a Best Fielder Awards? It's a combination of good hands, knowing how to play the hitters, all-out hustle and a willingness to sacrifice your body to make a play. Good speed and a good arm never hurt, either, but not always required. This year's all-defense team in the Continental League consists of:

Cleveland's Rogers Selected Outstanding Rookie

The Continental League Benny Myers Rookie of the Year Award has been given to Ray Rogers of the Cleveland Cyclones.

In the 2213 season the 23-year-old right fielder played in 162 games, recording a .281 batting average with 38 home runs, 106 RBIs and 107 runs scored.


Hill Earns RL Rookie Honor

When it came to hitting the baseball, Don Hill of the Hartford Riverhawks outdid his freshman peers in the Republic League this year and was named the 2213 Benny Myers Rookie of the Year Award winner earlier today.

The standout Riverhawks second baseman took the honor by hitting .322 in 157 games this season and finished with 205 hits, no home runs, 47 RBIs and 114 runs scored.

CL's Top Pitcher is Johnston

The Gabriel Prado Award for 2213 has been presented and the Continental League winner is Wynn Johnston of Noblesville.

"It's always nice to receive an award like this," said Johnston. "I just hope I can improve on my performance next year and be in the running again," the Millers star told reporters.

Johnston excelled with an impressive 17-5 record in 33 starts. In 216.2 innings he yielded 161 hits and 65 walks, while striking out 169 and compiling a fine 2.58 ERA.


Hartford's Wilbraham Snags Gabriel Prado Award

The Hartford Riverhawks have a rising superstar or maybe even a budding Hall-of-Famer in the making.
It's Dale Wilbraham, this year's Republic League Gabriel Prado Award selection. This blossoming hurler wowed fans, peers and sportswriters with a fabulous performance.

Wilbraham compiled a 23-5 record in 33 starts, tallied 199 strikeouts in 254.1 innings and recorded a 2.26 ERA. Other clubs managed only a .215 batting average against him.

Hernández Honored, 2213 CL Hideaki Tanaka Award

Noblesville's Jesús Hernández put the wraps on a fine campaign today by winning the 2213 Continental League Hideaki Tanaka Award.

The 28-year-old veteran scorched the opposition with a .293 average, picking up 192 hits, 33 doubles, 2 triples, 26 home runs and 91 RBIs, while scoring 115 runs.

What a way to finish off the year -- being honored with the 2213 Hideaki Tanaka Award in the Republic League. It had already been a very special season for Hartford's Elliott Marsh, but today's announcement really put the icing on his cake.

All season long Elliott Marsh gave opposing pitchers fits by hitting .330 as he collected 191 hits, 30 doubles, 5 triples, 47 home runs and 167 RBIs.
