No thread about this yet? Is this WW3? Obamas missile crisis? im sure there are thoughts in the Obama thread, but this deserves its own (and I avoid that one like the plague)

I don't think it's going to be WWIII solely because, right or wrong, I don't think the Ukrainian loss of Crimea is going to be considered enough of a reason to push Europe and the US into a very messy war with Russia. Gaining Crimea means more to Russia than losing it does to the the US or Europe as a whole, so I think rhetoric is as far as it will go (internationally). Sucky situation for Ukrainians - I work with a couple of them, interestingly enough one is pro-Russia, the other pro-Ukraine/Europe, which makes for some interesting (and thankfully civil) debate between the two.

If war did happen Russia would lose, but that's a war no one wants to fight and the Russians know it.

Obama issued an executive order imposing sanctions of sorts, on individuals and entities violating Ukraine's "sovereignty and territorial integrity." He declared this a "national emergency" due to the "unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States," which I suppose is the kind of language that gives him the legal authority to issue such orders.
