The problem with Argentina, from a match-up perspective, is that even if they're hit a bad run of form, you're always going to run the risk with a superstar like Messi (same for Ronaldo, Neymar, etc...) that they're just going to have one of those games, and you won't really have a chance.

As you pick your beer choices today, remember that Budweiser is actually owned by a Belgian conglomerate, despite their fake "all american" image.

Drink American. Real American.

This Argentina team could really use Diego Simeone, the player. Gabriel Batistuta, for crosses, wouldn't be a bad idea either....

OK, I'm showing my age now....

That's why I don't want the US to play Argentina.

No one can knock Messi in this Cup, he has been everything to this team. Not sure they'd be anywhere near here without him.

The Swiss only have themselves to blame. Maybe if they had put forth some effort to score over the last 75 minutes instead of defending the whole time.

At some point late in the first half, the Swiss seemed content to play for penalties. We saw how dangerous they can be in the last couple of minutes of the game. I don't know why, especially against a creator like Messi, they felt they could last that long without conceding. There were times in the second half and in extra time when it was hard to tell which direction the Swiss were going on offense.

Messi may not have the numbers, but I'd have to consider him and Rodriguez the overwhelming favorites for player of the tournament at this point.

Absolutely. I think generally playing for penalties is a bad thing (unless you are hopelessly, hopelessly outclasses and going to penalties is a significant upgrade to your chances), but trying to hold out against a team with sufficient invention like that is almost suicide.

US Going with a 5-4-1 with Dempsey up top which means we are essentially playing a 5-5-0.

Let the counter attack commence and hopefully our defenders don't flub everything up.

It's being labeled as a 4-3-3. I'm not a fan of it at all.

Isn't that what we went with versus Portugal?

We had a fairly standard 4-5-1 against Portugal which I think plays a bit better to our strengths. I wish we would have stuck with that and put in Mix for Zusi.

No. Rumor I read is saving him so as not to get 2nd yellow. If that's the case, it's stupid.

Really? No Beckerman? When he's been so solid?

So that what - you can get Gonzalez and Cameron on the field at the same time? That's a weird fucking decision Klinsy.

We'll see how this plays out. I gave us roughly a 40% chance of winning before seeing the lineups...now...I dunno.

Sounds like Johnson will be more interchangable with Cameron on the right side so Fab can make more forward runs

So far, only Mexico has been able to qualify for the 1/4 final after finishing 2nd of group stage. Can the USA do it too ?

Off the top of my head, the US finished second in group in 2002 and made the quarter finals.

I'd think its more of a 4-2-1-2-1 formation.

-------------Demspey---------
Bedoya--------------------Zusi
------------Bradley------------
-------Jones------Cameron-----
Beasley-Beslar-Gonzalez-Johnson

Its not like Dempsey would play defense if he is in the midfield. He has to be out there, so probably better to use him up top and try to play out of the back. At least Zusi and Bedoya track back. And its not like Wondo or Johansson are target men.

Why we don't keep possession for longer than 5 seconds is annoying.
