Close Encounter With a Bear

We were fishing at a remote lake in Western Ontario this past week and this big guy liked to pay frequent visits to our camp. By the end of the week, we barely flinched when he came walking through. This video was taken when a person with me woke up around 5:00 AM and was going outside to go to the bathroom.

The bears in this area aren't hunted all that much so they don't have much fear of humans.

On the last day we were there, the bear decided to leave us a parting gift and took a big dump by our campfire. Other than that, he did a great job cleaning up garbage and fish guts around camp while leaving things like our stove alone.

When we were in Big Bend National Park last week, we took a hike our first morning there down to a place called "The Window". On a water break, I thought I heard a rabbit or something in the bushes a few feet away. I went over to look, and it was a damn bear coming out of the underbrush! He came out into the open, turned to look at us, then turned around and started walking up a dry creek bed. We were too stunned to get our cameras out to take a pic. I tried to get one with my iPhone, but all I got was a nice pic of my finger over the lens. By the time we did get a camera out, he was out of sight.

We ended up seeing 5 distinct bears last week. Three of them were a momma and two cubs we spotted on the way out of the park. We did get pics of those.

We saw a bear in Eastern Ontario last week. He was climbing up a hill on the side of the road as we drove past. Little guy.

My brother has had bear sightings near his house in New Milford, CT.

I was hoping this thread wasn't about large hairy men. Thank God.

Was in Alaska about 3 years ago fishing when a large brown bear walked into the river from the other side. For about 20 minutes we stood there both fishing probably 50 yards from each other.

He was more successful than I after his thid catch and eat he raised up on his hind legs let out a loud, terrifying noise...and then seemed to give me a hed nod/chin raise and moseyed back out the way he came in.

It was scary as shit, no lie. But there was also something neat about it.

I had my close encounter in the Olympic National Park when I got out of the tent to relieve myself in the middle of the night. I heard a noise and caught a bear trying to figure out how to get at our bear bag. I pulled up my skivvies so fast I'm lucky I didn't hurt myself.

This is just a black bear, which I tend to describe as being an oversized raccoon. My dad goes to this camp every year while I was there six years ago. There hasn't been a year yet where the bears don't make an appearance at camp.

There are probably examples out there of black bears attacking humans but for the most part if you aren't messing with their cubs they are usually just looking for a bite to eat.
