IWS #224 - Back To School, Fool - The Results

IWS #224 – Back To School, Fool -- The Results

Rodney Dangerfield would be proud…

Short on time, will be short on pithiness as well.

#1 - Stupid's youngest, his 10 year old daughter, is pretty eager to start fifth grade this fall. What time does the bell ring for her first class?

8:00 – 20
8:30 – 3
9:00 – 3
7:30 – 1

Nearly an eliminator, I thought this might have been more subtle, actually. But glad to do some quick wheat/chaff sorting right off the bat, I suppose.

#2 - She will be riding the bus to get to school most days - how long is her bus ride each way?

I meant this to be deliberately ambiguous on time/distance, but alas hardly anyone took the bait:

30 minutes – 15
15 minutes – 4
10 minutes – 4
60 minutes – 2
5 miles
20 minutes

...many cocky participants start smelling a perfect score at this point. Surely you realize that I never allow a perfect score. Don’t get your hopes up, front runners, you’ll all gas at the turn.

#3 - Stupid's older child is heading to college for the first time. He wasn't able to get in to some of the more aspirational schools he sought, and instead has enrolled at a "safety school" that M&M Stupid approved of. What is his new school mascot?

I really wanted this to be “name the school” but I felt that was too much of an invitation to do something built around either me and my geography, or else around some google-able “largest campus” statistic or somesuch. The mascot bundling seemed to accomplish what I wanted pretty well.

Tigers – 9
Bulldogs – 6
Eagles – 5
Wildcats – 4
Crash Test Dummy
Sun Devils
Nittany Lions

I declare the mascot angle a success if for no other reason than frustrating any ASU insurgency into otherwise suitable institutions of learning.

#4 - Stupid's son wasn't totally sure what to study, but his new school requires a truly declared major, nothing "unspecified" or "general studies" available. What is his stated major as he starts his freshman year?

business – 17
communications – 4
English – 2
History – 2
political science
education

Runaway eliminator, sorry. Should have included something like “that Mrs. Stupid approves of” to tamp down the surging popularity of President Business.

#5 - We know it's just a matter of time until Son of Stupid calls/emails/texts to ask for money. The script will sound something like this: "Yeah, I know we talked about books and clothes and stuff, but I didn't realize I'd need so much money for (THIS) -- I need your help, pops." What's the big ticket pitched for Stupid to fund for his freshman son?

So, apparently I worded this poorly. The (THIS) was meant to be a “fill in this blank” cue, but I guess it became tough to read for some who thought I wanted a dollar amount. Sorry about that, I suppose, but the authority figure in the white coat says… the experiment must continue.

Food – 10
computer/laptop – 4
beer – 3
$100 – 2
car – 2
TV, fun, futon, girls, gas, and $500

#6 - Stupid is now feeling a little stupid himself, and also inspired by the progress of Son of Stupid - so he decided to enroll in the local community college for his own educational benefit. He's taking a class that he finds academically interesting, not just career-advancing. What's he taking this fall?

history – 8
psychology – 6
computer science – 3
business – 2
marketing, literature, philosophy, economics, art, Spanish, musical instrument, photography

That’s the sort of spread I like to see at least once in a set of these. There’s a subtle difference between a total eliminator and a sensible scattering where multiple answers are viable but a couple stand out as a bit better.

Okay, maggots! Here’s your incoming freshman class.

Stupid's son was reaching for the most popular undergrad major, I think.

Lack of comprehensive reading on #5 hurt my score, but it was just the difference between 5th and 3rd place, I suppose.

On the plus side, I learned a thing or two about the educational system in the USA as I did research for potential answers for the first three questions.

Congrats, timmae!
