Which Console Should I Buy? Thread
I don't want to mess up the console news but wanted to ask for an opinion. Myself and it seems like others here are looking to get into the next gen console arena. Any helpful advice is appreciated.
It seems like both are pretty similar. I'm listing what I see as the advantages from my perspective. Xbox One Advantages - Better controller - Sort of like their interface more - Cheaper at the moment ($349 for Xbox One and 2 Assassins Creed games) PS4 Advantages - MLB The Show (haven't really played it much the past few years though) - Smaller and no power brick I'm sort of leaning toward the XBox One mainly because of the controller. There is of course an option C which is buy neither right now, pick up Far Cry 4 for the 360 and see what happens down the line. I'm not terribly impressed by either at the moment. There is a lack of games it seems and re-hashing the last gen games doesn't interest me at all (Last of Us, GTA V). But I do feel weird playing a version of a game like Far Cry 4 that is not the best version. And I will eventually have to buy one so why wait? Any thoughts? I mainly play single player stuff right now. Games like Far Cry, Oblivion, Borderlands, the occasional sports game (looking at FIFA and maybe NBA 2K). |

I probably won't bump up to next gen until next year around this time, but when I do I plan on getting a PS4. I haven't seen any exclusive games on the XBox One that are anything special. If No Mans Sky becomes an exclusive and still looks as awesome as it currently does, I am going with whatever system has it.

We have both.
The PS4 hasnt been turned on by either me or my son in probably 2 months. The 360 gets more play than either. |

I am not going to buy a next gen console, but, if I were, I would get a PS4.
I owned a PS3 and a 360 for most of the duration of the last generation. When I look at the list of exclusive titles to each system, I played Demon's Souls, Gran Turismo, Heavy Rain, inFamous, MLB The Show, and The Last of Us. The Last of Us is one of my favorite games of all time. On the 360, I did not play a single exclusive title. Forza and Halo and Gears of War aren't for me. The Kinect is a turn off, not a selling point. The only advantage of Xbox is that every multiplayer NCAA league I've been in was on Xbox. Not enough to offset the above. PS4 wins hands down if I ever do end up getting a next gen console. |

We have a PS4 and I have been more than happy with. Not the sexy all in one media center aspect that the Xbox has, but as far as operationally I have no complaints.
The games look great and quite frankly it is worth it for the show alone, that game is just amazing on the PS4. I just picked up Dragon Age inquisition and it plays very smooth (I know there are issue on the PC version) and looks incredible. Again, I can't compare systems, but very happy with my decision to go with PS4, which I also think has more upside in the future. Last edited by BYU 14 : 11-22-2014 at 09:03 AM. |

Is there a 3rd party controller on the market that plays like the Xbox one but is for the PS4? Seriously the controller drives me nuts on a PS3.

The PS4 controller is different than the PS3.
The X1 controller is redesigned as well. Iprefer the 360 controller over either. |

It will probably be more than that for me, especially with more Japanese developers starting to release on PC meaning a new console won't be needed for Metal Gear Solid and maybe Final Fantasy. There still aren't really any games that excite me that would make either system work picking up. There are some on the horizon like Bloodbourne and Uncharted on PS4 or Scalebound and Crackdown on XBox One, but there will need to be more out before I pick up either one. Plus there's more for me to be excited about in the upcoming games for the Wii U. |

PS+ also give 6 free games each month if you have all three systems (2 for PS4, 2 for PS3, 2 for Vita). Free is nice.

PS+ is a nice value, but free isn't free when you have to pay for it.

I imagine that whenever I take the plunge, it will be with PS4. But I will likely hold off until a price drop or NCAA Football 201_ comes out.

I prefer the DualShock 4 to the Xbox One pad. That surprises me mostly because I loved the hell out of the 360 controller, which itself was derivative of the Dreamcast controller. But the changes they made to the DS4 took it from awkward and uncomfortable (DS3) to just-feels-right.
One advantage not listed for the PS4 is that the internal hard drive is upgradeable. The One, you can add external storage, but you can't upgrade what's in the box. That's not an immediate benefit, but it could be money-saving down the road. Xbox One has more exclusives at the moment, for sure - Knack is my only exclusive optical PS4 game since I traded in MLB 14 - but the exclusive games I'm excited about going forward are on the PS4. If you're the online play type, or think your kids ever will be, etc? PlayStation Plus is cheaper than Xbox Live Gold, and the integration with the console feels much tighter on PS4 than it did on PS2 (lol), PS3 or Vita. Not quite as seamless as it is on 360; 360 puts your connectivity front and center, while PS4 does a lot of it in the background. Automatic patch downloads, who's online, etc; that stuff is there, but it doesn't really announce itself. That's something I can't speak to the One's integration on. When I played a One, it was offline, so I don't know how their integration compares to Xbox 360. |

You should go out to the store somewhere and hold it. It is MUCH better than the PS3 controller. That is about the all feedback I can give you. I own a PS4, don't own a XBox1. I'm satisfied with my choice, but I don't think either should have been released with the install times they currently have on some games.

I've had a PS4 since February. I'm very happy with the purchase. PS+ is a great value.

PS4 purchased release day, zero issues with it. Great as DVD, blu-ray player. Got it 'cause of The Show and it delivers!!! Also, latest update claims to add the ability to use voice commands with add-ons, but I've not tried it.

PS+ is a fantastic deal. As others have said, 6 free games per month is ridiculous. You have to pay for online on both systems, so it's an apples to apples comparison. The PS+ game offers have been far better than the MS offers. I haven't bought a Vita game in months simply because I've got so many free games on backlog.

He said he was interested in single player, so the monthly charge might not be something he'd be interested in for XBL or PS+. And let's not get carried away with the monthly games the online systems include. By far they are indie titles, with the rare AAA title being offered. They are fun, but games that otherwise likely wouldn't be purchased.

This. I wouldn't buy PS+ or XBone Live for the monthly games personally. But then YMMV...each person likes a different kind of game. |

If I were you I would be inclined to wait until at least the next round of price cuts. By then there should be some more good next gen games available and most of the hardware glitches should have been resolved.

This is kind of misleading, because "6 free games per month" implies that you own, and play, the PS3, PS3 and Vita. If the PS4 is one's first foray into the current Sony ecosystem, 6 games/month is really overselling things. You're also being less than honest when you say the PS+ offerings have been better than the Xbox Live offerings. If you were making an oranges to oranges comparison, you'd be looking at the PS4 offerings compared with the Xbox One offerings, instead of - as I know you are - comparing the entirety of the IGL across three Sony platforms to the reasonably sparse offerings on Xbox One so far. The Games With Gold program on Xbox 360 has been solid. True, many of the offerings have been older titles, even when they've been AAA, but the Xbox 360 program has had one trump card over the PS3's IGL: 360 owners who snag a GWG title get to keep it even if their subscription expires. Quote:
Now, after I just spent some time taking MBBF to task for being dishonest, whether maliciously so or not, let me switch tacks and side with him on the value of PlayStation Plus. Everything I said about him being disingenuous about the Instant Game Library is true. Equally true: some of the discounts Sony offers PlayStation Plus members during their periodic sales can border on the absurd. I got Lego Marvel Super Heroes for my PS4 for like 9 bucks during a 3 month subscription earlier this year, and in that same window I also picked up the Tales of Symphonia HD remaster for PS3 for not too much more than that. Relative to the new prices for optical copies of those games at the time of purchase, I saved enough money that I could have bought a one-year Plus subscription and had money left over. The differences between Plus and non-subscriber wasn't as stark as THAT, but the differences did probably pay for the $18 cost of my 3-month subscription in the first place. That's nothing to sneeze at. Plus is a value. Maybe not in the way MBBF would have you believe, and certainly not to the extent he would have you believe, but if you take advantage of Plus specials during their sales, there is a good chance you will save enough money over the course of your subscription to justify that subscription in the first place. Even if you never set foot into the multiplayer realm. |

The same goes for Games with Gold. They offer some pretty good sales as well, and could recoup the cost of the subscription. If you want to take into account a situation like this you have to mention EA Access as well, which at this point is only available on the Xbox One. For the fee ($5 month or $30 year) you get a few of their AAA titles, early access for 5 days to certain upcoming titles, as well as 10% off EA games you want to purchase.

The Xbox Live sales are a little different, though. There, the sale is either Gold Exclusive, or available to everybody. It's not like the PS+ sales where a certain discount is available to everybody and then PS+ stacks on top of it. It does seem like the sales - at least on 360, I don't have a One yet to compare - are becoming increasingly Gold-only, but as I say, not quite the same thing. One console is saying "look, you can save even MORE money with our subscription, oooooh." and the other is starting to be like "look at our shiny sales, don't you wish you were subscribed?" |

Love my PS4, but a bit annoyed that I can't stream media through it. Not the end of the world as I have my PC hooked up direct to my TV, but a bit inconvenient.

I have the Xbox One and have no complaints. I don't use Kinect but it's served well as an overall entertainment system. Haven't had as much time to play games lately or I might be more interested in the exclusive PS4 games but I have always preferred the Xbox controllers, for sure. Ill probably end up getting the PS4 when it's even cheaper - still have the PS3, not in a rush. Need to finish GTA.. although I see they just ported that over for Xbox One.

Going back to PS Plus, we've finally hit that part of the console's lifecycle where Sony can now give away AAA titles, similar to how it is currently on the PS3.
December's free AAA PS4 game is Injustice: Gods Among Us January's free AAA PS4 game will be Infamous: First Light Not bad for $50.00 a year

I've gone back and forth over the last few days. Almost pulled a trigger on the Xbox One.
But I think I'm going with the PS4. The controller was really holding me back but it seems like they fixed a lot of the issues. I can get used to the analog location I guess. The XB1 tempted me at $329 plus the two AC games, but then I realized I'm not a big fan of AC games and could always get them in a year or two when they drop to $20. The PS4 deal is $400 and has GTA V which I kind of wouldn't mind playing through again as well as Last of Us which I've never played. I'll grab Far Cry 4 and Dragons Age and call it a day. I think in the end the fact the PS4 is mildly more powerful from a graphics standpoint pushed me over the edge. And having The Show is a nice bonus. I'm not really interested in an "entertainment hub" or whatever XB1 wants to be. If that technology becomes a must have down the road I can go out and get one. But I just want a console to dink around with once in awhile. |

Yup I did the same . I picked up that PS 4 same bundle on Amazon along with Dragon Age and an extra controller. I will likely trade the GTA V game in to Gamestop to pick up some thing I would rather play. Last edited by Galaril : 11-29-2014 at 09:47 AM. |
