That was awesome. Sunday morning Canada goes for the double-double (mens/womens gold in both hockey and curling).

Also, apparently our premier has stated that they will waive the alcohol laws Sunday morning so that bars and restaurants can serve booze starting at 5am. I love my country.

South Korea has indicated it will protest the women's figure skating judging. I think they have an excellent case, though they won't win the protest. Ashley Wagner, on the other hand, didn't deserve a medal and needs to stop complaining. How she didn't learn from her "what's that smell" face from the team event judging going viral escapes me.

Unfortunately, even with the new system that adds layer upon layer of obscurity and complexity to figure skating judging, judges are still quite connected to the skating organizations of their respective countries and are often partisan. This is a setup they don't have in other sports.

The bottom line: even though figure skating is wonderful to watch, all judged sports have a common problem with credibility. Extraordinary measures are required to preserve at least a perception of fairness. Figure skating isn't even close to any standard.

maybe someone can enlighten me, but i don´t see how the change in system made any sort of sense. Wasn´t the main complaints a) national/personal bias and b) lack of transparency as to how the grades get constructed ?

How then does it make sense to make the system now not only more complicated but also make it anonymous to the general public that only gets to see a number and nothing as to how it is generated ?

Yep tis true-and one reason why the judges scores should be publicized if you are going to allow people like that to be a judge.

This scoring system is light-years better than the old. In the old you could basically give a 6.0 (the highest) with no restrictions. In the new there's a base number for every element in the program. The judge then gives a "grade of execution" for each element, I think up to +3 or 4. (Memory is vague on this, so may not be completely accurate). Right now the judges results are not publicized-though they are reviewed by the IOC(international skating union officials if not at Olympics) to make sure judges are not being biased/nationalistic in their judging. In the future they need to be made public right after the competition-that will keep judges more honest.

Another problem with the new rules is that if a jump is completed, but there's a fall, they get credit for the jump-which is what Ashley Wagner was complaining about. They shouldn't be getting points for a fall no matter if a jump/spin/footwork

The Russian who won by the way-had one more triple jump than the South Korean, which was worth about the 5 points she won by.

But the reality is that figure skating will always have a subjective part of it. Individual judges have different opinions on what a "normal" successful element should look like or an exceptional one or a poor one.

I always thought terrorism in Sochi was unlikely due to the massive security force presence during the games. I was not so confident about the safety of the rest of Russia.

This. I didn't expect an attack at Sochi, but I did expect one somewhere else. The threats form known terrorists, the rash of bombings leading up to the games and the history of the Russian security forces made me nervous.

They have been showing some Canadian curling broadcasts on ESPN3 lately which I have been watching. Couple weeks ago was just a Canadian curling tournament, this past weekend was a Ryder Cup-style Europe v. Canada competition where the Canadians pretty much destroyed Europe.

Between that and International Test Cricket and European Champions Cup Rugby, ESPN3 has had a lot of good off-the-radar sports going on of late.

Yes, but if you compare the curling that is going on in this vs. the all-Canadian competitions that are going on on ESPN3, Canada's 8th best curling team is better than the crap we are putting up in this NBCSN sham competition.
