So the Padres are apparently a thing now. When did their front office figure things out? They still have to play the games, but this is one of the best offseasons I can remember seeing by any team in terms of improving the team on paper without mortgaging the future like crazy.

Rany Jazayerli over at Grantland has an article up now absolutely destroying Preller for his offseason moves. I did not realize at the time how high-profile the prospects that the Padres gave up were. I still think it's pretty easy to nail these moves now while their current players are all playing like bunk (pre-season projections had nearly all of the Padres beating what they are doing now), but it's definitely looking like a catastrophe in San Diego.

If ownership was convinced the Padres were close, Preller may not have been given much of a choice.

Their payroll went up by quite a bit, they're ranked 9th now which isn't usually standard operating procedure out there from what I understand:

hey, so whats up with all these guys who were at least reasonable major league hitters but now suck bad. Stephen Drew, for example. Or what happened to Bossman Jr. He used to be a reasonable player. And the Mariners are trotting out a catcher who is hitting .158 and he's qualified for the batting title.

And today is the first doubleheader in Anaheim in about that time, so as I understand it.
