New York Jets 2004 Dynasty

I have chosen to begin a career with the NY Jets. I watch all my games through the scoreboard and once in a while will jump in to call a play, but primarily leave it in the hands of my coaches. I am at Wall Street Level, injury settings at 100, using real rosters. The first order of business was to change the name of the city from New Jersey to New York. I do not know why Jim continues to put the Jets in Jersey but the Giants are in New York. The Jets home offices and facilities are on Long Island. Anyway:

Our teams franchise value is 5th best in the league at $507,000,000. Our stadium and parking is rated as excellent, while our turf is rated average (funny we share the same stadium as the Giants and there condition is Good, turf is average, parking is poor.) I guess there is no use in looking into a retractable roof stadium on Manhattan's west side any time soon.

Something that did raise my eyes was to the cost for a family of 4, highest in the league at $526. We have to put a good product on the field in order to succeed financially.

Season ticket sales are at 72,600 out of 79,700. Not bad.

According to our scouts we are weak at the OG position as well as our DB's.

Offensive-Pennington will be the starter, although his numbers are similar to Testaverde, we need for Pennington to lead now, especially with his contract up following the 2004 season. We need to know if he is the real deal before offering an extension. Moss will get the start at SE because of his big play ability, however him and Chrebet will alternate often. The game plan has also been modified to include SE2 in all three+ wide receivers sets. Right now I might play Center Dennis O'Sullivan out of position at LG to get us through the season, not that it will be a major upgrade. Hopefully, Smith and McKenzie will develop nicely over the season so our needs for next season will be soley a LG. With the exception of Mawae our Line could be our downfall on Offense.

Defense- Our front seven is looking real strong. Abraham is a monster pass rusher, Ellis is a solid starter, Ferguson is solid against the run, and we can bring in McGlockton for pass rushing. Our #1 pick Robertson looks to be the real deal. He is rated on the Green Page. He will start and take his rookie lumps but expectations are high. We have solid DL backups in Thomas, Walters and McGlockton. The LB's are good, Cowart and Jones are solid starters, Lewis is on the downside of his career, the rookie Hobson has a nice looking future and will see plenty of action. Depth could be a concern if an injury should occur. At DB is where our defense gets shows weaknesses. With the exception of CB Beasley we need help here. Abraham, Mickens and Shepherd will all get there shot at LCB. Right now Garnes has been moved from SS to FS. Carter gets the start at SS, he is a good against the run. Pagel will be active on our roster because of his special teams abilities. McGraw could be the one who sees little action.

Right now we have 56 players signed, 3 will be getting the axe following the preseason. Martin and Bollinger are battling for the QB3 position, however Bollinger has the upper hand because of his holding abilities (rated 92). We are carrying 12 OL right now, so likely 2 will pack their bags at the end of the preseason bringing us down to 53.

Time to see what we have here as the preseason starts.

We are ranked 13th in AFC power ratings at 52, to start the season. Our first four games however gives us a chance, a chance, to start 3-1. Washington (53) and Dallas (35) are rated towards the bottom of the NFC while New England (64) is rated slightly better and Miami (78) is rated tops in the AFC.

It looks like you were able to copy the rosters straight out of the game. I can't do that for some reason. I can't copy anything from the game except box scores and game logs. How are you guys doing it?

Do you have a special utility or am I missing something totally obvious?

We just completed a tough 5 game preseason schedule. What are the schedule makers thinking about? We completed the preseason 2-3, and no major injuries the roster is now cut down to 53 players to begin the regular season.

The team began with a tough fought game against Tampa Bay resulting with a loss, followed by wins against Cincinnati and New Orleans, follwed by two more loses to New York Giants and Philadelphia.

In those five games the team was outgained on average 327 to 291. With the exception of the New Orleans game in which they gained 455 yards against us, the defense looked respectable. We are concerned with our DB's, Abraham beat out Mickens and Shepherd for the starting LCB spot, although all three will see action in regular downs as well as nickel and dime situations. McGraw and Pagel showed little at the FS position so Garnes will play out of position at FS with Carter at SS. The D-line got tremendous pressure on the QB's, led by John Abraham who recorded 5.5 sacks during the preseason. Rookie DT Dwayne Robertson looked good at times applying pressure on the QB, however he also got knocked on his back against the run on several occasions.

On the offensive side of the ball, we were disappointed. Pennington did not look sharp in the preseason completing only 55% of his passes for an average of 5.9 yards an attempt. Testaverde got some reps as well as Bollinger and Martin. Bollinger won out for the #3 QB, although we hope he never has to see game action this season. Conway had a huge game against Cincinnati, but was not a factor in the other four games. TE Becht looked good, as well as C Kevin Mawae and Tackles Fabini and McKenzie. Back-up OL Machado made the most of his opportunities, however the play of the guards was below the standard of professional linemen.

To get down to 53 the team cut the following:

RG Jonathan Goodwin
LG Dave Yovanovitis

the team signed FA LG Robert Capsso from Penn State. Capasso was not with any other teams during camp, so the Jets will have to bring him along slowly.

Week 1 - New York Jets at Washington Redskins (NFL Opening Night)

The much-anticipated match up of the new look Redskins versus the New York Jets took place in Washington. Rob Johnson leads the Redskins at quarterback, who surprisingly beat out Patrick Ramsey. Washington coach Ellis Stokes is known to switch his quarterbacks based on the hot hand. Much has been made of this match up since the defection of Laveraneus Coles, Chad Morton, Randy Thomas and John Hall from the Jets to the Redskins.

The Jets and Redskins played a defensive style football game with the Jets winning 16-10, despite being out gained by Washington 319-258. The Jets played mistake free football, not turning the ball over fewer penalties and special teams performance. NY Jets punter, Dan Stryzinski pinned the Redskins deep in their own territory as the Jets won the field position battle. The Jets lone touchdown came from rookie fullback, AJ Askew on a 1-yard touchdown pass from Chad Pennington. Pennington finished the game, 22 for 38, 189 yards passing and a touchdown. Curtis Martin contributed with 57 yards on 23 carries; however, a lot of those runs were on third and short situations to keep the chains moving and end the game. Strong Safety, Tyrone Carter who finished with 10 tackles, led the Jets on defense. Game MVP went to Chad Pennington. Next for the Jets, Miami comes to town after a 17-10 win over Houston.

Offensive player of the week went to St. Louis Quarterback, Kurt Warner who threw for 211 yards and pair of touchdowns in the teams win over the New York Giants. Warner is subbing for starting quarterback, Marc Bulger who tore an ankle ligament and is out for 13 weeks.

Defensive player of the week went to St. Louis DE Grant Wistrom who recorded 3 tackles and 2.5 sacks.

Week 2 – Miami Dolphins (1-0) at New York Jets (1-0)
The Miami Dolphins come to New York after a 17-10 win over Houston. All-Pros Jason Taylor, Ricky Williams, and a pair of excellent corners in Patrick Surtain and Sam Madison lead Miami. Houston’s David Carr threw for nearly 300 yards against Miami, however, he was picked off 3 times. The Jets feel they need to stop Ricky Williams and protect the football.

The difference in this game was special teams. The Jets took the opening drive down the field but settled for a field goal and a 3-0 lead. It stayed that way until midway through the second when Ricky Williams scored on an 8 yard run. The Jets special teams would make their first big play, forcing Mare to miss a rare extra point. The Jets continued the ball control game and took a long drive that eventually stalled and tied the game at 6 on a Doug Brien field goal. The turning point of the game came with less than four minutes to play in the third quarter. Donnie Abraham blocked a punt that Jamie Henderson returned 12 yards to the Miami 1 yard line. On the very next play Curtis Martin cashed in and put the Jets ahead 13-6. The Jets would add a late field goal to seal the victory 16-6, and move to 2-0. New York travels to 0-2 New England next week.

Game MVP was Mo Lewis who finished with 8 tackles, 1.5 sacks and 1 interception.

Offensive Player of the Week – Jeff Garcia, QB, San Francisco – Garcia finished 26 of 39 for 212 yards, 3 touchdowns in the team’s 34-28 victory over St. Louis.

Defensive Player of the Week – Kenny Holmes of the New York Giants. Holmes had 8 tackles and 3.5 sacks in the team’s 26-9 victory over Dallas.

The Jets lone touchdown came from rookie fullback, AJ Askew on a 1-yard touchdown pass from Chad Pennington. Pennington finished the game, 22 for 38, 189 yards passing and a touchdown. Curtis Martin contributed with 57 yards on 23 carries; however, a lot of those runs were on third and short situations to keep the chains moving and end the game. Strong Safety, Tyrone Carter who finished with 10 tackles, led the Jets on defense. Game MVP went to Chad Pennington. Next for the Jets, Miami comes to town after a 17-10 win over Houston. Offensive player of the week went to St. Louis Quarterback, Kurt Warner who threw for 211 yards and pair of touchdowns in the teams win over the New York Giants. Warner is subbing for starting quarterback, Marc Bulger who tore an ankle ligament and is out for 13 weeks. Defensive player of the week went to St. Louis DE Grant Wistrom who recorded 3 tackles and 2.5 sacks. Week 2 – Miami Dolphins (1-0) at New York Jets (1-0) The Miami Dolphins come to New York after a 17-10 win over Houston. All-Pros Jason Taylor, Ricky Williams, and a pair of excellent corners in Patrick Surtain and Sam Madison lead Miami. Houston’s David Carr threw for nearly 300 yards against Miami, however, he was picked off 3 times. The Jets feel they need to stop Ricky Williams and protect the football. The difference in this game was special teams. The Jets took the opening drive down the field but settled for a field goal and a 3-0 lead. It stayed that way until midway through the second when Ricky Williams scored on an 8 yard run. The Jets special teams would make their first big play, forcing Mare to miss a rare extra point. The Jets continued the ball control game and took a long drive that eventually stalled and tied the game at 6 on a Doug Brien field goal. The turning point of the game came with less than four minutes to play in the third quarter. Donnie Abraham blocked a punt that Jamie Henderson returned 12 yards to the Miami 1 yard line. On the very next play Curtis Martin cashed in and put the Jets ahead 13-6. The Jets would add a late field goal to seal the victory 16-6, and move to 2-0. New York travels to 0-2 New England next week. Game MVP was Mo Lewis who finished with 8 tackles, 1.5 sacks and 1 interception. Offensive Player of the Week – Jeff Garcia, QB, San Francisco – Garcia finished 26 of 39 for 212 yards, 3 touchdowns in the team’s 34-28 victory over St. Louis. Defensive Player of the Week – Kenny Holmes of the New York Giants. Holmes had 8 tackles and 3.5 sacks in the team’s 26-9 victory over Dallas.
