If 5 CF Teams Are Undefeated, Who's In?
This was posted over at Hawkeye Nation. Thought it was a great topic for here.
I'm going to start with my 5 unbeatens. And you discuss who is in. Of course throw out your own 5 and discuss as well. No Poll to follow. B1G-- Iowa Pac 12-- Utah SEC-- LSU ACC-- Clemson Big 12-- Baylor Who do you think gets left out? Does Iowa because of their weak 2nd half schedule. But right now their SOS is ranked 36th. They and Alabama are the only teams this season to beat 2 ranked teams on the road. Or Clemson, because the ACC is weaker up and down the conference. Or Baylor, becuase they really haven't played anyone other than TCU, Oklahoma and Oklahoma St. Or LSU, who am I kidding they would be a shoe-in. Or Utah becuase they play in the Pac 12. What says you?

Probably Iowa based on SOS at the end of the year. They could end up with one game against a top 25 team all year at the end and it's a ho-hum Wisconsin team.

I take that back as they'd have to beat a ranked team in the B1G title game.

Yeah and if its an undefeated Ohio State (or even an undefeated Michigan State)... well... I think for that reason, Iowa definitely gets in. Probably Baylor or Clemson would be left out. More likely Baylor.

Another interesting discussion is if a 1 or 2 loss Power 5 team gets in over an undefeated Memphis/Houston/Temple. Especially in the scenario of a 1 loss Alabama/Undefeated Memphis, since Memphis beat the team Bama lost to.

I don't think Iowa gets left out 'cause they have to beat someone in the conference title game (right?)
LSU is a shoe-in. I think Clemson unbeaten is probably in as well. That leaves one spot for Utah or Baylor, and I think Utah gets the last spot in that scenario. Baylor's way around that might be to absolutely shut down TCU's offense and prove they have something that resembles a defense.

If Baylor gets left out I bet that Spurs the next round of realignment. Memphis may play themselves into the big 12.

As long as they beat an undefeated team coming out of the East I think Iowa would get in. If both OSU and MSU stumble and Iowa end up beating a 10-2 team in the Big Ten Title Game then I think they probably still end up in but I don't think it's a lock. |

I agree with this (especially if it's Michigan in that title game.) But I also think there's less than a 10% chance of Iowa, LSU or Utah going undefeated, let alone all 3.

There is no way there are 5 unbeatens left at the end of the season that don't include a non-Power 5 team. Memphis looks the most likely to run the table, but Toledo is a possibility as well.
I think if Temple runs the table, they legitimately should be considered for the playoff, since that would include wins over Notre Dame, Memphis, and a 10 point win at East Carolina which is a team that played a supposedly good Florida team within 7 points at The Swamp. Also a win over Penn State, which I guess matters.

Taking this particular season out of it and just speaking abstractly: If you have a "playoff system" in which a team can go undefeated and not make the playoffs, then you do not have a real playoff or a real national championship.
I'm, like, the only guy left who liked the old system. Win your conference. Win your bowl game. Let the fans and sportswriters argue about who won the mythical national championship. Those days are never coming back. So, if you want a real national champion, then cut the number of eligible teams down. Make a Division Super I or something. Also, make it so that every team in Division Super I cannot schedule games outside of that Division. It's crazy to me that we already have too few games to figure out which teams are the best, and we let schools waste several of those games playing cupcakes. |

Doesn't matter.
There is EXACTLY a 0% chance of that happening. If it did, Baylor gets left out because they played 1 less game. |
