Cat5 / Cat5e / Cat6

It appears as if Category 6 UTP Ethernet Patch Cables are backwards compatible with Cat5.

Is this with all Cat6 cables or only certain kind?

Is the compatibility automatic or manual?

Is the 500mzh of the Cat6 still present in a cable modem and switch that have been running Cat5 at 350mzh?

Is there a benefit of using Cat6 instead of Cat5?

Standards specify that all Cat6 cables should be backwards compatible.
