RIP: My cousin's son Andrew
Just found out that my cousin's son passed away earlier this afternoon.
My cousin and his wife got married in 1994, and were wanting to get their family started right away. They tried for 8 years, but were unsuccessful. They worked with an adoption agency, and were matched up in 2002. They brought him home soon after he was born, and couldn't have been happier. But within a couple of weeks they realized something was wrong. They took him to the doctors for tests, and were devastated when they found out he suffered from hydranencephaly, a condition where his brain never developed and he basically was functioning off of his brain stem. Doctors gave him 12 to 18 months, maximum. The adoption agency offered to take him back, but my cousin and his wife refused, saying he wasn't a 'lemon', and took on the challenge and wanted to spend whatever time they had remaining with him. He stunned the doctors by making it to his second, then third, then fifth, then tenth birthday. During this time, my cousin and his wife, who never expected to be able to have kids themselves, grew their family by two with the births of their sons. They had to sacrifice a lot, with all of the attention and care Andrew needed along with raising their other sons. They were dreading this day, but always in the back of their mind knew it was coming. Most people that know about the situation are convinced that he lived this long due to the love and care my cousin and his wife bestowed on him.

Very sorry to hear. It really sounds that they really loved their child and did the very best they could for him.

That sucks, cartman. I am really sorry to hear this. There is nothing quite as painful and difficult as the death of a child.

Thoughts and prayers to their family and yours during this time. It really takes a special kind of person to do what they did and they were definitely rewarded with some great memories of him - not that it makes losing him any easier, of course.
