FOFC's Favorite Rock Act - Round 1 Group I
No upsets in group H, which also gives us our second shutout of the tournament. This group involves several "oldies" and a very interesting matchup between Paul Simon and Billy Idol.

I spent way more time on Janis Joplin v. The Monkees than I should have.

Indeed. The Monkees wee at the forefront of breaking free of their corporate claptrap. So rock and roll that Mike put his fist through a wall and shouting "That could have been your f***ing head!" to get out of their contract and be their own band.
They were completely influential in psychadelic music as well as ROckabilly. And micky has a ton of cred as a singer. |

cher I dunno. Only solo cher I've heard was that autotuned pop stuff in the 80s and 90s. I assume this isn't SONNY & Cher

Cher had some solo hits in the '60s and '70s that I'm still familiar with, "Bang Bang", a cover of "All I Really Wanna Do", "Alfie", "Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves", "Half-Breed" and "Dark Lady".....whether any of that qualifies as 'rock' certainly seems debatable.

Damn, Asia with a brutal 1st round. Not sure they should be 'ranked' 254...

Good to be getting back to rounds where I have opinions.
I really loved Asia a lot as a teenager. Their first record was the first vinyl album I ever bought. Liked AC/DC as a teenager but as an adult I recognize that they are very limited in their sound. A coworker's six-year-old even pointed that out. Regarding the Monkees, don't forget Michael Nesmith's influence on early music videos. R.E.M. was also another favorite of my youth. Until about '89 or so then I started losing interest. Prince v. Meatloaf was a difficult one and I wish I could change my Meatloaf pick to Prince. U2...my most hated band of all-time. F Bono, F The Edge, F these self-righteous pricks right in the ear hole. Their stuff before 1984 was good but since then...crap. |

AHAHAHAHA about u2. Yeah I like some of their song but agree on the selfrighteous image.
i like meatloaf's bat out of hell but prince...i cannot vote against his royal badness. acdc meh. I do like asia. ELP is the real goods oh yeah cher stuff. gypsy is a good song. santana is a rock god but korn has some really good stuff never did care for janis joplin. one hit wonder that she didn't even write. gogo alcoholic... |

ELP had a few nice moments (Take a Pebble in particular), but IMO at least they exemplified the worst aspects of prog rock.
No idea who Stray Cats are, but can't bring myself to vote for U2.

From the Beginning and Take a Pebble are easily my 2 favourites. I would struggle to find a third to be honest, having heard all their albums from their peak period - s/t debut through Brain Salad Surgery. The circumstances around Emerson's death were bloody tragic though.
I was never a fan of the improv King Crimson stuff, but I rank them miles ahead of ELP. Red is a classic, but their first album is probably my favourite. Atmospheric proto-prog, and very understated compared to what they would do on later albums.

Someone in rock, I believe it was Eddie Van Halen, had a quote about AC/DC that touched on this. It was something like: "They only play 1 song, but it's a damn good song!" |

I was convinced I would be the only Stray Cats vote, but I guess there is more U2 hate than I thought.
Prince vs. Meat Loaf was the toughest pick for me this round. The rest were pretty easy. |

Hmm, I feel like the construct here is that we are supposed to do exactly that - and forget/ignore the accomplishments of single people when considering the band as the "act." That's why individuals are listed separately... cf. Santana/Carlos and many other examples we have already seen. |

I really thought Asia would be closer than they are. I like AC/DC, and they definitely have bigger hits, but I think I probably like the average Asia song more than the average AC/DC song.
