Second and Ten: Greatest Miami Dolphins Team

Hungry for some football, so I'm doing a Greatest Miami Dolphins team dynasty. Here's how it will work...

1) Instead of a tournament, I'll do it as a Full 16 game NFL season with 32 teams.

2) Divisions will be balanced using a seeding system.

3) Teams are selected and seeded using their SRS rating on Pro-Football-Reference.

4) I made three exceptions to the teams included. The 2008, 1970, and 2016 Dolphins all made the playoffs, but were not in the top 32 teams. So I replaced the 30th, 31st, and 32nd seeded teams with them.

5) 14 of Dan Marino's 17 seasons made the top 32. The 1996 Dolphins got replaced by one of the playoff teams. The other Marino teams that didn't make it are 1993 (Achilles season), 1988 (Marino's only losing season), and 1991.

Here's a rundown of the included teams...

AFC East

73 Dolphins (12-2) - They came out as the #1 seed over the undefeated 72 squad. Despite losing two games, they were generally more dominant, particularly in the postseason. Csonka and Morris both had over 900 yards. #5 offense and #1 defense.

16 Dolphins (10-6) - Starting off 1-4, the Dolphins won 9 of their next 10 games to make the playoffs. They were led by a breakout season from Jay Ajayi and Ryan Tannehill's best season as a Dolphin. #17 Offense and #18 Defense

79 Dolphins (10-6) - Csonka returned from a stint in the WFL and with the NY Giants to help lead the Dolphins to the playoffs, where they got hammered by eventual SB champs Pittsburgh Steelers. #11 Offense, #4 Defense.

94 Dolphins (10-6) - Marino returned from his Achilles injury and put up the third highest yardage total of his career, leading the Dolphins to a division title despite a mediocre defense. A missed Stoyanovich FG ended their playoff run. #3 Offense, #17 Defense.

AFC North

71 Dolphins (10-3-1) - Shula's 2nd season as coach and the Dolphins 1st Superbowl appearance, where they got obliterated by the Cowboys. Great seasons by Griese, Csonka, and Warfield. Won a notable 2OT playoff game against the Chiefs. #4 Offense, #3 Defense.

09 Dolphins (7-9) - Chad Pennington got knocked out in the 3rd game of the season and Henne was not ready to take over. Teams were able to adjust to the wildcat and Ronnie Brown also got injured. Ricky Williams did have a solid rebound season with 1121 yards. #17 Offense, #22 Defense

78 Dolphins (11-5) - Led by RB Delvin Williams (1258 yards) and QB Don Strock, who was able to fill in for an injured Griese, the Dolphins made the playoffs as a wildcard and fell to Earl Campbell's Oilers. #2 Offense, #6 Defense

99 Dolphins (9-7) - Marino got a solid start to the season interrupted by an injury, but Damon Huard filled in nicely as a backup. The Dolphins st arted 7-2, but finished 2-5 as Marino struggled after his injury, resulting in the only season where he threw more picks than TD's. #13 Offense, #19 Defense

AFC South

75 Dolphins (10-3) - The Dolphins lost three players - Larry Csonka, Paul Warfield, and Jim Kiick - to the WFL. However, other players like Mercury Morris and Nat Moore stepped up to lead them to a solid season. Two losses to the Colts cost them a playoff spot despite a 10-4 record. #6 Offense, #4 Defense

06 Dolphins (6-10) - The Dolphins picked Daunte Culpepper over Drew Brees and the franchise still hasn't recovered. Culpepper barely played and Joey Harrington took over for 11 games. A solid defense led by Zach Thomas and Jason Taylor kept them competitive in most games. #29 Offense, #5 Defense

74 Dolphins (11-3) - The Dolphins nucleus of Griese, Csonka, Warfield, Morris, and Kiick were aiming for a 3rd consecutive championship, but were foiled by the Raiders in the playoffs on the famous "sea of hands" play. #3 Offense, #6 Defense.

01 Dolphins (11-5) - A weird season. The Dolphins somehow had the #8 offense despite pedestrian numbers from QB Jay Fiedler (20 TD, 19 INT) and RB Lamar Smith (968 yards on 3.1 YPC). I expect them to do very poorly in this season. #8 Offense, #11 Defense.

AFC West

82 Dolphins (7-2) - The Killer Bees defense were dominant this season and helped make up for a terrible season from David Woodley, who has to be one of the worst Superbowl starting QB's ever. #10 Offense, #2 Defense

11 Dolphins (6-10) - The other 6-10 team to qualify. The Dolphins lost their first 7 games and Chad Henne went down with an injury. However, backup Matt Moore had a solid season leading them to a 6-3 record the rest of the way. #20 Offense, #6 Defense

02 Dolphins (9-7) - 1853 yards from Ricky Williams and a strong defense weren't enough to get the Dolphins into the playoffs, as they go 4-6 after a 5-1 start. #12 Offense, #4 Defense.

95 Dolphins (9-7) - The Dolphins made some big free agent moves to push them to the Superbowl, but most acquisitions didn't pan out. Despite a solid Marino season, the Dolphins underperformed and got owned in the playoffs by the Bills once again. #7 Offense, #10 Defense.

NFC East

72 Dolphins (14-0) - They come in as the #2 seed, likely because SRS figures in strength of schedule and the 72 squad did have a weak schedule. They also won their three postseason games by one score or less. But they're still the only unbeaten team in NFL history. #1 Offense, #1 Defense

70 Dolphins (10-4) - Shula's 1st year as coach and he immediately turned the team around. The main squad of the famed 72 team is all here - Griese, Csonka, Morris, Kiick, Warfield. Rated surprisingly low on SRS and is one of the playoff teams that got subbed in.

90 Dolphins (12-4) - A much improved defense from the dismal late 80s squads helped the Dolphins race to a 9-1 start. The Dolphins also tried more ball control than usual as this is Marino's fewest attempts in any season where he started 16 games. They still couldn't handle the Bills in the playoffs. #14 Offense, #4 Defense

03 Dolphins (10-6) - Despite subpar QB play from Jay Fiedler and Brian Griese, and a much less effective Ricky Williams than his explosive 02 campaign, Wannstedt's Dolphins rode a superb defense to a 10-6 record, but still missed the playoffs. #17 Offense, #3 Defense

NFC North

83 Dolphins (12-4) - In Marino's rookie campaign, he didn't start until the 6th game of the season. They lost that first game in OT, but led by Marino and the Killer Bees, they went on a 7-1 tear to win the division. An upstart Seahawks team stunned them in the 1st round of the playoffs. #7 Offense, #1 Defense.

92 Dolphins (11-5) - The 92 squad started off 6-0 and were being talked about as Superbowl favorites, but then only went .500 the rest of the way. They did advance to the AFC championship, but were throttled by Buffalo once again. Solid season for Marino. #8 Offense, #11 Defense.

00 Dolphins (11-5) - The first season after the Marino era was a good start. Led by RB Lamar Smith and a stellar defense, the Dolphins won the division title and won a memorable playoff game on Smith's 200 yard performance. #16 Offense, #3 Defense.

87 Dolphins (8-7) - The Dolphins went 7-5 in non-strike games, but their replacement players went 1-2 and the Fins lost the division by one game. RB Troy Stradford won rookie of the year, but never lived up to his potential. #7 Offense, #16 Defense.

NFC South

84 Dolphins (14-2) - The #3 overall seed and potentially better than the two Superbowl winning teams. Boasting one of the best offenses in NFL history (led by Marino's record setting season) and a pretty good defense, they easily won the division and blew out their two playoff opponents before running into a 15-1 49ers team in the Superbowl. #1 Offense, #7 Defense

08 Dolphins (11-5) - After the worst season in franchise history, the Dolphins rebounded to win the division title thanks to a Wildcat offense teams weren't prepared for and a +17 turnover margin. #21 Offense, #9 Defense

98 Dolphins (10-6) - One of the best defenses in Dolphins history (led by Zach Thomas, Jason Taylor, Tim Bowens, Sam Madison, Patrick Surtain) helped overcome for mediocre offensive output. Marino was towards the end of his career and had few weapons to work with. #16 Offense, #1 Defense

81 Dolphins (11-4-1) - Often considered one of Shula's best coaching jobs, this 81 squad didn't boast many star players, yet raced off to the division title. They lost a memorable OT playoff game against the San Diego Chargers. #11 Offense, # 5 Defense.

NFC West

77 Dolphins (10-4) - In what was perhaps Griese's best season (he lead the league in QBR for the only time in his career), the Dolphins rebounded from Shula's 1st losing season ever to post a 10-4 record. However, they missed the playoffs due a to divisional tiebreaker. #3 Offense, #5 Defense

97 Dolphins (9-7) - A very weird season. The Dolphins somehow snuck into the playoffs despite dropping games against the worst teams in the league, including a 41-0 loss against the 3-13 Colts. Like other seasons in the Jimmy Johnson era, Marino's late career decline was furthered by a lack of weapons. #13 Offense, #16 Defense.

85 Dolphins (12-4) - The decline of the Killer Bees defense and an injured Mark Duper limited the Fins to a 5-4 start. However, Marino powered them to 7 straight wins to take the division, including an upset win over the undefeated Bears. Unfortunately, the team completely shit the bed in the AFC Championship. #4 Offense, #12 Defense

14 Dolphins (8-8) - This squad had a chance at the playoffs with a 7-5 record, but a porous defense gave up 141 pts in the final 4 games and the Fins dropped 3 of their last 4. Tannehill had a solid season at QB. #11 Offense, #20 Defense.

Week 1 Games

Miami '09 29
Miami '85 33

Neither Marino nor Henne had a good game, but the fireworks came from defense and special teams. Vontae Davis scored on a blocked punt, but 85 Miami was able to pull away due to an INT return from Doug Betters and a kickoff return by Lorenzo Hampton.

Miami '87 36
Miami '14 22

Marino threw 4 TD passes to 4 different receivers and forced Tannehill to play from behind. He narrowed it to a 6 pt deficit in the 3rd quarter, but back to back TD passes from Marino put it away.

Miami '77 34
Miami '84 24

In the biggest shocker of the week, the 77 Fins upset my preseason pick thanks to a defense that held Marino to 198 yards passing, a running game that combined for 311 yards rushing, and 5 TD passes from Bob Griese.

Miami '70 17
Miami '03 27

Ricky Williams leads the way with 132 yards rushing and the defense completely shuts down the 1-2 punch of Csonka and Morris.

Miami '99 11
Miami '79 10

In a defensive struggle, the offenses combined for less than 500 total yards. Csonka would get tackled for a safety, which would prove crucial as Marino throws the winning TD pass with 23 seconds left.

Miami '75 20
Miami '98 27

Griese threw 5 interceptions, one of which was returned by Terrell Buckley for a TD. Big plays from the 75 squad helped them narrow the gap, but they dug too big of a hole.

Miami '02 26
Miami '82 33

A 168 yard rushing performance from Ricky Williams is wasted by Jay Fiedler and his 4 INT's. The 82 squad built a 33-3 lead by the 4th quarter, only to almost let the lead slip away to a furious rally.

OPOTW: 77 Bob Griese (14-19-178-5-0)
DPOTW: 72 Dick Anderson (6 tackles, 2 Forced Fumbles)
SPOTW: 85 Loreno Hampton (217 return yards, 1 TD)

Go '84!

I wish we could have modern TV coverage of NFL games that came before the era of High Definition TV. Would love to watch the 84 Dolphins tear things up in HD.

Week 2 Games

Miami '84 42
Miami '81 30

84 Marino rebounds from a rough opener to throw for 532 yards and 5 TD's. The 84 Killer Bees still got exposed for the 2nd week in a row and this will be a concern moving forward.

Miami '03 22
Miami '90 17

The 03 squad used a ball control offense (35:45 time of possession) to take a 16-3 lead into the 4th quarter. Marino had a rough game and his late comeback attempt fell short.

Miami '95 20
Miami '87 3

The 87 squad has no chance as Don Strock starts (I'm assuming this is to simulate the strike games?) and can't match up with 95 Marino's 351 yards passing.

Miami '92 23
Miami '83 12

Marino didn't start until 6 games in, so Dacid Woodley will make occassional starts to simulate that. That dooms the 83 squad. Bobby Humphrey is the star for 92, with 57 yards rushing and 76 yards receiving, with 1 TD.

Miami '85 41
Miami '99 24

Mark Clayton had 6 catches for 148 yards and 1 TD to lead the 85 Fins over a 99 squad that couldn't overcome Marino's 5 INT's.

Miami '79 9
Miami '94 7

The 79 Fins are outgained 449-197, but they manage to pick off Marino three times and force another fumble. Uwe Von Schamann kicks the game winning FG with 1:08 left.

Miami '14 22
Miami '71 34

The 71 Fins show off a surprisingly explosive offense (Griese goes for 11-21-219-3-0) to overcome a 137 yard effort from Lamar Miller.

Miami '06 10
Miami '01 6

An ugly game with opposing QB's Joey Harrington (11-26-96) and Jay Fiedler (10-22-75) putting up putrid performance. The biggest fireworks come from future Patriots WR Wes Welker, who returns a kickoff 91 yards for the only TD of the game.

Miami '77 42
Miami '09 17

77 was perhaps Griese's best season as a QB and here he carves up Sparano's Dolphins with a 16-26-238-3-0 performance. It was close at the half, but 77 pitched a 19-0 shutout in the 2nd half.

Miami '73 21
Miami '70 34

In a matchup of teams with very similar rosters, the younger team prevails thanks to a more efficient Griese (16-22-182-2-0 vs. 18-31-178-2-1).

Miami '74 0
Miami '75 24

The 75 Defense was dominant, holding 74 to 136 total yards. The 75 Griese went 14-20-231-2-0 and Nat Moore had 99 yards on 3 catches.

Miami '11 41
Miami '82 21

11 Miami scores more points than they did in their real life season. Chad Henne with a remarkable performance, throwing for 14-22-233-1-2, but then adding 87 rushing yards and 3 rushing TD's! Reggie Bush added 98 yards and a TD.

Miami '00 37
Miami '02 30

In a matchup of two teams led by RB's, 00 Miami races off to a 24-0 lead. 02 Miami mounts a comeback behind Ricky Williams and his 109 rushing, 95 receiving performance. They manage to tie it late in the 4th quarter, but a 54 yard run by 00 Lamar Smith sets up the game winning TD with 11 seconds left.

Miami '98 19
Miami '97 9

In another matchup of back to back seasons, 98 prevails on the strength of its vaunted defense (forcing Marino into 4 INT's) and 185 combined rushing yards from Karim Abdul-Jabbar and

Miami '72 20
Miami '08 17

Pennington throws a 6 yard TD pass with 12 seconds to send this one into OT, but Jake Scott picks off a pass in the first series of OT. This sets up the 72 squad to remain unbeaten on a Garo Yepremian FG.

Miami '78 10
Miami '16 16

A great performance from Jay Ajayi, including a 70 yard TD run on the first series of the game, was just enough to get the 16 Fins a narrow victory.

OPOTW: 84 Dan Marino - 33-45-532-5-0
DPOTW: 75 Bill Stanfill - 4 Tackles, 3 Sacks
STPOTW: 06 Wes Welker - 133 Return Yards, 1 TD

This would be awesome. I was so young during that season and don't remember it very well.

Week 3 Games

Miami '01 22
Miami '74 7

The best Fiedler performance we've seen yet (258 yards, 3 TD's) leads the 01 Fins past a mistake-prone Bob Griese and an anemic offense that doesn't get on the board until midway through the 4th quarter.

Miami '82 3
Miami '92 10

It's quite a defensive struggle with 82 Miami leading 3-0 at the half. 92 Miami rallies with two longscoring drives in the 4th quarter, culminating in 26 yard game winning TD pass from Marino to Tony Paige (one of my favorite Dolphins).

Miami '09 6
Miami '73 32

Quik's pick puts together a thorough dismantling over the 09 Fins (530-96 in total yards), who probably don't even belong here. Mercury Morris leads the way with 170 yards rushing

Miami '71 17
Miami '11 24

Reggie Bush has rushing TD's of 52 and 26 yards to lead the 11 Fins to a 21-0 halftime lead. The 71 squad battles back on two Griese TD passes, but they run out of time.

Miami '94 22
Miami '03 0

Brian Griese and Jay Fiedler combine for 5 INT's to help a struggling 94 offense coast to victory. 94 Miami had to settle for 5 FG's, but 03 could never get anything going.

Miami '87 21
Miami '72 52

The 72 squad stays undefeated and looks as good as their 73 counterparts in doing it. Csonka, Morris, Kick combine for 244 yards rushing and Earl Morrall has an incredibly efficient 12-16-187-4-0 performance.

Miami '08 22
Miami '06 7

The 08 Dolphins manhandle Joey Harrington, forcing him into 4 INT's. The offense isn't explosive, but does just enough to put the game out of reach.

Miami '16 20
Miami '79 14

Tannehill comes up big, engineering a 6 play, 89 yard 4th quarter TD drive to win the game. Csonka and Williams have decent days, but Griese throws 2 costly picks.

Miami '02 13
Miami '83 6

Ray Lucas gets the start against David Woodley and both QB's play down to expectations. Woodley is particularly bad (6-20-87-0-1). Ricky Williams does just enough to put 02 Miami over the top.

Miami '70 32
Miami '84 39

84 Marino continues to shine with a 31-43-370-4-1 performance and throwing the winning TD pass with 1:41 remaining. The 84 Killer Bs run defense gets exposed as both Csonka and Kiick go over 100 yards.

Miami '81 43
Miami '14 17

David Woodley actually has a solid performance and is aided by 97 yards from Andra Franklin. They take advantage of three Tannehill INT's to blow the game open.

Miami '98 7
Miami '85 27

The 98 Fins fumble twice in addition to Marino's 2 INT's and the 85 Fins take advantage to build a 27-0 lead. Clayton comes up big with 122 yards receiving.

Miami '75 32
Miami '95 19

The score isn't as close as it looks as 75 Fins ride Griese's 3 TD passes to a 26-0 halftime lead. Marino is picked off three times.

Miami '99 25
Miami '77 30

A Freddie Solomon Kick Return TD and another solid performance from 77 Griese is enough to overcome a resilient 99 Marino, who tried to do what he can with a backfield of Cecil Collins, JJ Johnson, and Karim Abdul-Jabbar.

Miami '97 30
Miami '78 0

The 78 Fins have to start Don Strock and he promptly shits the bed with a 3-14-32-0-1 performance. Marino leads the way for the 97 squad with 278 yard and 1 TD

Miami '00 16
Miami '90 12

Mark Duper's 186 yard effort is wasted as Lamar Smith (88 yards rushing, including a 31 yard TD that put 00 up for good) powers the 00 squad to victor.

OPOTW: 84 Dan Marino (31-43-370-4-1)
DPOTW: 02 Jason Taylor (7 tackles, 4 assists, 2 forced fumbles
STPOTW: 77 Freddie Solomon (145 return yards, 1 TD)

Week 4

Miami '72 21
Miami '83 6

David Woodley gets the start, giving 83 almost no chance here. Csonka and Morris combine for 159 yards rushing, and the No Name Defense forces 3 turnovers.

Miami '82 14
Miami '06 0

The Killer Bs completely shut down the Culpepper Dolphins, forcing them into 8 punts. A Woodley TD pass to Jimmy Cefalo and a Tommy Vigorito punt return were just enough offense for 82.

Miami '79 17
Miami '73 22

73 Miami turns the ball over 3 times in their first 4 series, but they regroup behind Earl Morrall and a stellar defensive effort. Bill Stanfill has 6 sacks, 2 TFL, 1 forced fumble, 1 Safety

Miami '78 15
Miami '71 10

Duriel Harris leads 78 Miami to victory with 55 yards receiving and a 95 yard kickoff return. Delvin Williams and Leroy Harris combine for 102 yards rushing.

Miami '11 7
Miami '87 33

Marino throws for 321 yards and 2 TD passes and Lorenzo Hampton adds 94 yards rushing to lead 87 Miami past a poor performance by Chad Henne (9-27-119-1-1).

Miami '90 17
Miami '70 14

Griese throws 4 picks, but Csonka and Kiick keep '70 in it with a combined 114 rushing yards. Stoyanocich nails the game winning FG in the 4th quarter.

Miami '95 37
Miami '94 22

It's a Marino shootout as 94 and 95 version combine for 816 yards passing. The 95 version wins the duel with a very efficient 30-34-381-5-1 performance.

Miami '01 13
Miami '08 14

In a defensive duel, 08 Miami scores a safety with 2:21 remaining. Then Pennington leads a scoring drive that culminates in a 10 yard TD pass to Ted Ginn.

Miami '81 14
Miami '75 6

Tommy Vigorito's 2nd punt return TD of the week and a Woodley TD pass to Bruce Hardy is all the offense 81 Miami needs.

Miami '84 28
Miami '97 31

84 Miami with another surprising misstep as 4 turnovers limit their offensive production and their porous run defense gives up 171 rushing yards to the likes of Karim Abdul-Jabbar, Irving Spikes, and Jerris McPhail.

Miami '85 20
Miami '14 21

The worst Marino performance in this dynasty yet. He completes only 13 of 33 passes and throws a game losing pick six with 5 minutes left in the 4th quarter.

Miami '74 13
Miami '02 22

A surprisingly efficient performance from Ray Lucas, aided by 112 rushing yards from Ricky Williams is enough to carry the 02 Dolphins. Jason Taylor leads a strong defensive performance with 2 sacks and a forced fumble.

Miami '92 10
Miami '00 23

Another poor Marino performance this week (14-36-114-1-4) allows Fiedler (232 yards, 2 TD) and Lamar Smith (163 combined yards) to prevail.

Miami '03 23
Miami '98 10

98 Miami turns the ball over on downs twice in the red zone and 03 Miami scores on 4 out of 5 consecutive drives in the 2nd/3rd quarters to pull away.

Miami '09 3

Miami '71 28
Miami '99 29

Mercury Morris opens the 2nd half with a kickoff return TD to give 71 a 21-6 lead. However, the 99 squad comes back thanks to a blocked punt TD by Tim Bowens and a fumble return TD by Daryl Gardener. Damon Huard throws a game winning TD pass to Tony Martin with 38 seconds left.

Then 16 Miami gets the onside kick. Tannehill drives Miami right back down and pulls off another TD pass (to Devante Parker) with 1:11 left to make it 24-17. However, the comeback falls short when Brock Marion picks off Tannehill with 40 seconds left.
