Ok.. I'm curious now... We use that phrase ALL of the time.. but I thought I stole it from my dad... Anyone know the origin of the phrase?

Do any politicians really care about the voting rights of people in DC? This is about giving Democrats extra senators. Biden would not be endorsing this if it gave Republicans control of the senate.
I propose a compromise: Let's fold DC into Maryland and/or Virginia. The people in DC get their full representation in congress and no one can complain about "packing the senate".

I think some politicians care, whether or not you believe the White House does. But who cares why someone supports the policy? Is it right or wrong? Virginia and Maryland do not want D.C. folded into their states. And that solution actually strips D.C. of some of their power, as they'd lose their 3 electoral votes. There is no legitimate argument against D.C. statehood. None.

It's clearly not a nation where one person equals one vote and it continues to move further from it as time goes on. I seriously doubt, that when the founders created the system we have now, the never envisioned that some areas would have massively outsized population advantages over other, and that the end result of that system of representation would have such staggering effects on the balance of governance.

Or we split California into a bunch of Wyomings. Instead of 55 Electoral votes, 2 Senators and 53 Representatives, California would have 198 electoral votes, 132 Senators, and 66 Representatives.

This is a Democratic Party response to the redistricting in recent years by the Republicans, and also to the current voting rights controversies. And let's not forget McConnell refusal to let Obama's Supreme Court nominee get a proper nomination hearing.

If HI is a state there's really no reason PR shouldn't be.

Personally I would like to see more support from the people of Puerto Rico in order to admit them as a state. I think the last referendum had a slim majority in favor of statehood on a 50% voter turnout. Bump the number up to 2/3 support and I'll be in favor of granting statehood.

I'll also just throw this out there but I think we need to add about 65 representatives to the house to make it an even 500 voting members.

I have no problem with annexing the residential sector of DC into the state of Virginia, while maintaining the remainder as the seat of the Federal government. It accomplishes both goals; giving the people equal representation under statehood, maintains the District of Columbia as the seat of Federal government as prescribed by the constitution, all without the necessity of creating a new state.

Put me solidly in the D.C. should be a state crowd. PR too.
Does adding a new state cause some burden that I am unaware of? Last edited by Kodos : 04-20-2021 at 12:38 PM. |

In addition to D.C., I think all the territories should have the option of being states. Colonial possessions are incompatible with the Declaration of Independence.
It's just wild to me that the GOP has no belief they can win the votes of people of color. Puerto Rico has a history of electing the more conservative party to statewide office.

Again, Virginia doesn't want D.C. Neither does Maryland. And like I said earlier, this would actually decrease the power D.C. has in the presidential election.

It's also funny that people are okay with D.C. being annexed into Virginia, when before they would only accept Maryland since it was so blue, it wouldn't change much. Now Virginia has gone so far blue, they'll accept that as well.
So far the arguments against D.C. statehood have been: 1. Biden only supports it because it would help the Dems. 2. Some vague nonsense about the "necessity" of adding a new state. 3. Why not give it to two states who don't want it instead? None of those are convincing, but to be fair, there isn't a convincing argument against letting people have equal representation.

DC should be a state.
But making DC a state would benefit one party over the other. So it isn't going to happen. |

Even when I was a Republican many moons ago, I was for statehood. It is the only fair.

Taxation without representation was pretty big back in the mid 1700s.
I have a nephew that lives in DC and wants to be a state. I have a t-shirt from him with the outline of DC and 51st splashed across it. Sign them up for statehood. PR as well.

I agree with PR, as long as they want it. I also think they should be allowed indendence if they want it. Same with Guam.
