Depending on where you buy them from, sometimes Samoas are called Caramel Delites. Could it be that they are just making it called Caramel Delites everywhere?

I bought some Caramel Delites from some kids in front of the Jewel right by me here in Chicago, and bought some Samoas from a friend's kid who lives in PA and had them shipped, so I could do a taste test. The Samoas looked like they had a bit more chocolate on them, and were a little darker (more cooked), but it was difficult to tell which one I liked more.

Welp. We just can't have nice things.

Joe Gatto tour cancelled due to multiple sexual harrassment/assault allegations. I saw a couple of things a few days ago, but apparently it's blown up and he cancelled the tour and checked into a facility.

What the fuck is wrong with people?

I saw someone that was an extra on their movie that said it was the most unprofessional and creepiest set she had worked on. She said a couple of the jokers were constantly trying to get the young girls (college aged it sounded like) drunk and going back to the extras holding area to hang out with them, which breaks set rules and got people in trouble with their agencies because the extras were blamed for it. She didn't name names but said they were following girls around, etc, and this coming out didn't surprise her at all.

Yeah, what kind of fucked up individual would pay money to see Joe Gatto?

We've shopped at Kohl's for a long time - back when we would visit my parents in Texas and they didn't even have Kohl's in either Florida or Kentucky. The gimmick has always been 15-30% off offers and Kohl's Cash to get people to come back in during times when the coupons weren't great. Over time, they started restricting use of the % off coupons on stuff like Nike and other name brand stuff, but overall, you could get some pretty good deals.

We noticed a few weeks ago when we went in to use 30% deal that only 1 of the 4 things we bought was eligible for the offer. So when we got a 40% off deal over the weekend, I went onto their website to see if I could figure out what the coupon would apply to. To my surprise, they were upfront with showing you which items a coupon would work for. That's new. The other surprise was that nearly everything other than (mostly) their brands were eligible. For instance, with men's dress clothes, the only brand that is eligible is Apt 9 - no Haggar, no Dockers. For jeans, it's Sonoma - no Levi's, Lee, Wrangler, etc.

My wife went into the store, and now they show on the pricing on the racks if the coupon is eligible. That means they either got a ton of shit or knew they'd get a ton of shit if they completely restricted the items the coupons could be used for without making it apparent.

So... I think that's effectively it for Kohl's in our house, other than a few limited purchases. I'll be shopping around way more than I used to when I knew I had that coupon buffer to bring the prices down. I know they've struggled, and going this route tells me nothing they've tried has worked.

Fast-forward nearly a year later, and ... surprise! It turns out that alienating your customers by restricting the use of coupons and deals to a few company-owned or off-brands is not going to win any fans. Who knew?

Kohl's is changing what products its coupons work on

Yeah, even the White Sox wouldn't keep him. That .161 batting average last year -- and failing to catch on with anybody -- has him talking about converting himself into a pitcher.

Just found this post randomly from 2011. All-time* record pollen count for Atlanta today, about 50% higher than ever recorded and nearly double the highest day last year. I've been miserable with it pretty much all week, so I REALLY have no desire to even open a door today.

*the records for that only go back 35 years, it's conducted privately by a local "allergy center". Always has been to my recollection.

I don't think I have ever been lied to as many times in two days by a major corporation as I have by Xfinity. That company has never been great, but now they have just become complete frauds.

As a spouse of a public school teacher, I am so fucking sick of subsidizing these schools. At any other job it would be laughable for them to expect their employees to spend this amount of their personal money on things.

My personal favorite XFINITY scam they run is with the modem/router/no data cap plan they sell called Xfi Complete. It’s $25 a month add on, which honestly I don’t know what the going rate for a rental is (no data cap SHOULD be standard but isn’t.)

That isn’t the scam I’m talking about though. That comes if you want to use your own modem instead of doing the Xfi bundle rental ANd want no data cap they charge you $30 a month.

My discounts ran out and the bill went up $50. I called hoping to get on a new discount plan, and the woman said she could keep us on the same plan and drop our prices by more than the increase. We said great, signed up. Shortly got an email that my new phone was on the way. Nothing was ever said about a new phone or a new line. Called and canceled, and the guy said it was canceled and apologized. Then I got an email for my new internwt plan. It was a lower speed, no frills plan. Called again and canceled. Told them we were directly lied to. They claimed they listen back and agreed we were lied to, then canceled the contract.
Meanwhile, we signed up for AT&T fiber that just came to the neighborhood. Almost as cheap as the original, and that is just base price with no discount. While the guy was here he signed me up for AT&T mobile for less the Xfinity as well. Went to call to cancel the plan, it seems my contract was not canceled from the day before, and the phone was still on the way. I went ballistic. They kept apologizing and telling me they could get me a cheaper plan. I told them I would use a carrier pigeon before I ever sign up for their service again.

In Gmail, there's an "unsubscribe" button and you can pretty easily one-click and be done for majority of sites.

Then there are other sites where you have to sign-in to then unsubscribe. Frak that, I just "report spam" on them.

It's interesting to witness the ad wars between hotels and air bnb/vrbo.

I think VRBO wins them overall, but I find it fascinating.

It is kind of annoying when you remember a random person from your past and decide to google their name to see whatever happened to them and it turns out that they share a name with a mildly famous person so you will never be able to find them

The worst part about VRBO ads is their insistence on calling themselves "Verbo" as opposed to V.R.B.O. I get it that V.R.B.O. doesn't really roll off the tongue, but "Verbo" sounds ridiculous.

At 1:30 this morning some guy went into the Walmart that is 5 minutes from my house and shot two employees that was working there stocking, then went to another house around a corner and shot someone. He was arrested about two hours away in South Carolina. That was a busy night.

Having only read the headline about the Ole Miss freshman who supposedly slept with her boyfriend's father months ago and not giving it at second thoughts and then reading the piece in The Athletic and now seeing Pat McAfee and Dave Portnoy trying not to get sued, I am struggling to understand what was the sports angle that led to this being content for Pat McAfee and the guys at Barstool Sports. Yes I do get why it would be content for them. I just assumed that the boyfriend was either Jaxson Dart or someone on the basketball team and how it was some distraction going into the draft or the tournament which is why it was a thing for them. Why choose this "story" over a similar one from whatever today's version of Maury or Jerry Springer show?

Anybody remember Urban Dead? An online web-based zombie game that was a big thing around here and on FOBL back in the day (2006-ish)?

Apparently it came to an end last month, changes in the UK laws left the guy who ran it open to big fines so he closed it down. Only a couple of months short of it's 20 years, not bad for a web game.

My five year old daughter has been completely obsessed with Leprechauns the last two days. On Sunday, we spent two hours looking for Leprechauns, Leprechaun homes, and Leprechaun portals in our backyard. Then she set a Leprechaun trap in our yard, making paper gold coins and trying to lure one in using potatoes - since the internet told us they like potatoes.

So, of course, I had my dog eat the potatoes, took the gold coins, and used green marker to create "Leprechaun footprints" Sunday night. That just threw her into more of a frenzy last night, where she largely replicated her efforts, but added more bells and whistles and this time used pistachios, since the internet told her Leprechauns, also, like nuts.

She was so worked up about Leprechauns that she had trouble going to sleep, so my wife told me we had to shut the whole operation down. So, I had the Leprechaun write her a note thanking her for everything and saying he was going back to his land for a while.

She is convinced the Leprechaun in our backyard is named Jeremy. When she catches the Leprechaun her three wishes are:

1. 1,000 squishmallows
2. To make the Earth a better place for everyone
3. To be able fly

Happy Birthday Will! And yes we are all old!

On a semi related note, with youngest getting ready to start his senior year in HS in a few months, shout out to the men and women who having children later in life. I went to a varsity baseball playoff game and it finally dawned on me that four members of my son's team have parents that are 50+ and also have at least one sibling below the age of 5. I was exhausted for those parents.

Thanks for the shout out! I'm 51 and my daughter doesn't turn 6 until July. I got a late start on this for a variety of reasons and it's definitely exhausting, less so now than the very early years, but it's still tough when you combine the fact that both my wife and I are older and are at a time in our careers where we are both quite busy and have pretty demanding roles. We do a good job managing and covering for one another, but it's not always easy, especially when it takes two hours to get our daughter to fall asleep because she's too wound up about Leprechauns.

Thanks! I am doing everything I can preserve her spirit. It's so much fun to be around and experience. She's currently watching some really bad TV mini-series from 1999 called "The Magical Legend of the Leprechauns" staring Randy Quaid, Whoppi Goldberg, Roger Daltry, and Mr. O'Brian from "Star Trek: Next Generation".

I love my kids, love being a parent, and enjoyed the kids while they lived with us, but ... there is no way in hell I could be the parent to a young kid now. No way. I mean, if I had to take over for certain reasons, of course yes I'd find a way, but voluntarily? Not a chance. Life moves in stages and I'm beyond that stage.

OK, first of all, congrats and happy birthday to Will.

Second of all, fuck you for making me feel old.

Yeah, no way here either. Our oldest will be a HS senior next year and our youngest will be a HS freshman next year. That's exhausting enough (we're 51). Of course, I also feel like I'm parenting my parents at this point, so that probably doesn't help.

Yeah, he's out. Since Aug 2024 he's a prosecutor in the Miami-Dade state attorney's office. Promoted out of his first assignment into a supervisor role in another division a few weeks ago.

I turn 50 today. Guess I’m now one of those parents.
