American (14-12, 7-5) @ Navy (21-5, 10-2)

Well, this is a big game at home for us. Last game at home and we have a big chance to clinch the conference with a loss by Bucknell. Last time we played American we beat them soundly on their court 82-58 led by Konrad with 18 points. American has a good scoring D only allowing 64 a game and also brings with them a good handling team only committing 13 turnovers per game. That along with a well disciplined team and a good free throw shooting team poses a challenge for us. Hopefully though we can get the win here and help our cause. We need all the fan support we can get here…so cross your fingers and wish your Midshipmen some luck.

The Lineup:
Lindtner vs. Tucker – Advantage Navy
Rouse vs. Seitz – Advantage Navy
Konrad vs. Alonso – Even
Hensley vs. Williams – Even
Valley vs. Lizarraga – Advantage Navy

I think I mentioned it last time but the advantage we have isn’t really by much. I really think we caught American in a bad game last time we played them and it helped our cause. They did shoot 27% from the field last game so I am sure that didn’t help much at all. Lindtner and Valley will be getting the ball this game as well as Konrad.

14:22 15-4 Navy. We come out of the gates hitting our first 6 shots and are 7-8 from the field in all. Konrad has 7 already after just nailing a 3 from the left wing….but gets charged with a T for taunting. American gets the free throws and the bucket and trail now 15-8.
8:31 28-10 Navy. We are shooting lights out this game and American cant make a thing, much like last game. They cant handle the man D well I guess.
4:42 38-16 Navy. I think we are playing pissed off. This is great!
Halftime 53-25 Navy. We are dominating in everyting…even team fouls with a whopping 17 fouls four us!!!

15:02 60-27 Navy. This is just total domination. I can’t say im not happy though.

Final Score 92-41 Navy. I didn’t want to bore you with this game as it was never close. This is the worst beating we gave anyone this year and im a bit shocked it was against this team as I predicted them to be the 2nd best team in our conference before the season started.

We shot 64% to their 23% and out rebounded them 43-33. We dominated in every statistical category this game. Konrad was the POG and Lindtner also played very will with a double-double.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR TEAM AS WE WIN THE REGULAR SEASON CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP!!!

On a side note it also helps that Colgate has moved up to 7th and we might not have to play them in the 1st round if they win their next game or if Army loses again. We have Holy Cross next on their court to wrap up the regular season.

Also we do get news of our last recruit who has committed to Navy. Ill give his info in a bit.

He is only a 1 star guy, but has decent skills, especially in rebounding where he also has a lot of room for growth. His post D is pretty good as well and can grow as he grows. I think overall he was a steal being a 1 star recruit and rounds out our class.

Navy (22-5, 11-2) @ Holy Cross (14-13, 6-7)

Holy Cross comes in with a chance to be a 3 seed instead of a 5 seed and a better chance in the 1st round of the conference tourney. So they have a bit to play for. We really do not, as far as conference standing go anyway. We do however, want to win the game, not only to avenge the loss we took in the close game at home, but also to just get another win under our belts and help our chances to make a post season tourney if we don’t win the conference tourney.

Nothing has changed from the last time we played these guys so you can scroll up if you want some info on them. We need to contain Beem this time though as he went off on us for 17 points and 10 rebounds. Hensley will have to do a better job guarding Jacobs as well as he got 16 last game.

The Lineup:
Lindtner vs. Beem – Advantage Navy
Rouse vs. Cecil – Advantage Navy
Konrad vs. Smith – Even
Hensley vs. Bucher – Even
Valley vs. Jacobs – Advantage Navy

If we do all the things we did last game but this time remember how to shoot, then we will do fine.

15:06 10-6 Navy. We are shooting good at least to start the game while HC is not doing so well…yet.
10:07 25-21 Navy. HC just nails a 3 to get back within 4. We are still shooting well while they are at 30%
Halftime 46-41 Navy. It has been a close game throughout. We are shooting 48% to their 35% but being out rebounded badly at 26-17. We are shooting well from the line though at 92%.

14:10 61-47 Navy. We start to pull away with some 3s by Valley and Konrad and good shooting all around.
9:40 68-59 Navy. HC mounts a small comeback and so we will slow the pace of the game down and try to get out of this as fast as possible.
4:52 77-68 Navy. So now we just want to hold on and win this game. We hope the same thing doesn’t happen like the last game and they make a furious comeback.

Final 95-77 Navy.

We opened it up and pretty much whooped them in the last 5 minutes of the game after it had been close for most of the rest. We shot 49% to their 37% for the game, but were out rebounded 45-36. We were awesome from the line going 22-24 and that helped out cause quite a bit. Valley was POG.

So we get Army in the first round whom we have beat 86-54 and 62-54. We haven’t played them since the beginning of conference play though. If we win that, then we have the Lehigh and Holy Cross winner.

We have broke into the top 100 in the RPI at #95 now too. So a good showing in the tourney of course is what we want, but even if we do not win it, we may have a shot to get invited to the NIT.

Army (9-19, 3-11) vs. Navy (23-5, 12-2)

Patriot League Tournament – First Round

We have played Army earlier in the season with 2 wins…one comfortable and one a bit closer than I would of liked. Army has one of the worst offensive teams in the country ranked 319th and scoring only 53 a game. Their D however, is pretty good and ranked 32nd in the country and #1 in our conference in allowing only 61 a game. They are losers of their last 4 games.

The Lineup:
Lindtner vs. Burns – Advantage Navy
Rouse vs. Prater – Advantage Navy
Konrad vs. Jordan – Advantage Navy
Hensley vs. Fannin – Advantage Navy
Valley vs. Smith – Advantage Navy

Hensley and Valley should be able to get some shots off on the perimeter and take advantage of that mismatch. Rouse will have the easier time on the inside over Prater than Lindtner will with Burns guarding him. Lindtner will be guarding Prater and Valley will be on Fannin.

14:46 6-12 Army. This isn’t going as planned at all. Army comes out on fire and up 7-1 causing a timeout to be called by us. Prater is killing Lindtner and abusing him, although he has picked up 2 fouls.
9:22 11-12 Army. Well we shut them down, but manage to only get 5 points ourselves. We are shooting a horrid 22% from the field!
4:55 17-15 Navy. Our first lead comes finally and we have held Army to 3 points in 10 minutes of play only cause the D is playing well and causing 11 turnovers.
Halftime 25-23 Navy. OK, so it isn’t so much that Army is controlling the tempo, as much as it is that we cant make a shot. If we could even hit 45% of our shots like we normally do we would have a comfortable lead. Instead we are shooting 30% and Army is at 40%. They are also kicking our butt on the glass 20-13. Only reason we are not getting killed is cause of our D and the fact that they are playing tough and have caused 15 turnovers. We need to shoot better obviously, keep the pressure up and get some boards and we might get lucky and pull this one out. Also we will be doubling up on Prater as he has 11 points this half.

14:41 31-30 Navy. We are clinging right now to a string. It is fraying….
9:05 41-39 Navy. Hensley just hits a 3 to put us back up by 2. This is tense and we really need to get some rebounds and make some shots.
5:16 51-44 Navy. We jumped out to a 6 point lead, then Army cut it back to 1. We called yet another timeout and jump back out to a little cushion after Konrad hits a 3.
1:59 53-52 Navy. Im in shock…really. We suck tonight and Army just hits a 3 and cuts the lead yet again. I call another T.O.
1:48 56-52 Navy. Hensley hits big time from the left corner with the 3!
:31 57-55 Navy. Hensley is fouled and only hits one and Army nails another 3 to get within a bucket.

TURNOVER BY VALLEY….but Army misses and Valley gets the rebound!

:07 Valley is on the line for a 1 and 1….and MISSES…

FANNIN FOR 3 AT THE BUZZER………………………no good!

Final 57-55 Navy. I don’t know what to think here. We had possibly one of the worst games we have had all season, and chose to do it against the worst team in the conference at the worst time. LUCKILY we pull it out and survived. Army had been hitting 3s all night and surprisingly they didn’t hit the final one of the game. We shot 35% to their 40% and were out rebounded 41-31. We won the game cause of turnovers, causing 25 to our 13. They were 9-17 from long range while we were 9-14. The costly part of the game was our terrible free throw shooting, going 10-18 and what could have been a costly miss by Valley with 7 seconds left and a bit earlier by Hensley. Anyway, we won the game and I hope got all the crappy shooting out of the way for tomorrows game against Holy Cross on zero days rest.

Holy Cross (15-14, 6-8) vs. Navy (24-5, 12-2)

Patriot League Tournament Semi-Finals

We have been playing Holy Cross quite a bit lately. Season series is split 1-1 where we lost our first home game to them 78-79 and then a week later avenged that loss and beat Holy Cross on their court 95-77.

We know this team pretty well. They are a strong rebounding team and handle the ball well. We know Beem, Jacobs and Smith are their guys and we know we need to stop them. Different guy shave stepped up for us in the 2 games but hopefully we can have some consistency in shooting and not play like we did last game against Army. If we don’t make shots, we will lose…simple as that.

The Lineup:
Lindtner vs. Beem – Advantage Navy
Rouse vs. Cecil – Advantage Navy
Konrad vs. Smith – Even
Hensley vs. Bucher – Even
Valley vs. Jacobs – Advantage Navy

14:57 15-4 Navy. We come out a new team hitting 5-5 from the field and 3-5 from the line. We look good except for one thing…we are letting HC get too many offensive boards and converting. All their rebounds (4) are offensive.
10:03 28-10 Navy. We have the touch and HC doesn’t right now and they continue where they left off last game against us. Most the 2nd string is in the game right now as Hensley and Lindtner have picked up 2 fouls.
4:50 46-20 Navy. Pulling away even more now as Valley hits some more 3s and already has 16 so far this game.
Halftime 61-34 Navy. We play the best half of ball we have all season without a doubt. We shot 68% and already surpassed anything we did in the last game with Army. HC looks bad right now and cant hit a shot and so far it is not their night. They still are shooting 36% and getting rebounds, but it isn’t helping much.

9:28 89-52 Navy. This game hasn’t been close from the start. We continue to shoot well and I started gradually bringing in some of the 3rd string a few minutes ago.

Final 107-71 Navy. Now, I pulled off the dogs with 12 minutes in the 2nd half. My starters stopped playing completely at the 10 minute mark and only the 2nd and 3rd string were playing. 13 of my 15 players scored at least a point and everyone had at least 5 minutes of action in this game. We shot 60% to their 37% and out rebounded them 47-41. We played a great game.

Well, we get Bucknell in the championship game as it should be I guess. At least we get some time off to prepare so 4 days break will be nice.

The good news here also is that we have moved up to 84 in the RPI.

Bucknell (19-11, 10-4) vs. Navy (25-5, 12-2)

Patriot League Conference Championship Game

One of our 2 conference losses came to these guys in an 88-74 drubbing on their home court. We won the other game at home 87-79. You can imagine the importance of this game obviously. With a win, we head off to the NCAA tourney and with a loss, well, we might have a chance to make the NIT. Both teams are 100% healthy so no excuses can be used in that area. Bucknell brings with them a good offense averaging 71 a game a good rebounding team averaging 37 a game and one of the best shooting teams in the country ranked 39th at 46%. Their starting 5 is as good as ours and we know the guys we have to stop.

The Lineup:
Lindtner vs. Johnson – Even
Rouse vs. Bingaman – Even
Konrad vs. Salzman – Advantage Navy
Hensley vs. Norvell- Advantage Bucknell
Valley vs. Barley – Advantage Navy

This will be the first time we have faced Barley as he was injured seriously the other 2 times we played him. Lindtner and Johnson make a good battle. Lindtner probably took the 1st contest, but Johnson tore him up in the 2nd. The difference this game is that Konrad will be playing as he missed a game last time due to injury. So hopefully that little tidbit will change up the game plan some. It will be Konrad, Valley and Hensley who need to control this game in order for us to win it. Lindtner will need to keep Johnson off the glass and contain him as good as he can.

This is the biggest game of the season up to this point for us…lets get it on!

14:47 9-11 Bucknell. Both teams are battling it out again as we have done in the previous 2 games.
9:36 18-23 Bucknell. We have the shooting woes again and having trouble rebounding as well. We have to start doubling up on Bingaman as he has 10 points and 5 boards already.
4:11 31-34 Bucknell. Wareden misses 2 free throws then Bucknell fouls and he redeems himself with 2 made free throws. We still trail, but we were down by as much as 9 and have fought back.
Hafltime 40-43 Bucknell. They have held the lead the whole game. Konrad hit a shot at the halftime buzzer to get us within 3 so that is a bit of momentum for us as we had trailed again by 7. Johnson is not doing much for Bucknell but Bingaman is, so I think I will put Lindtner on him for the 2nd half and take the double team off. We need to keep them off the offensive glass as that is hurting us badly letting them get second and sometimes third opportunities to score. Valley has been shutout.
13:35 43-48 Bucknell. We were within a point but have screwed up some possessions. Bucknell ball and we need a stop. We don’t get it…43-50 Bucknell.
11:55 43-54 Bucknell. The dream is coming to an end here. Lindtner gets called on a cheap foul and argues it and is slapped with a T.
7:30 46-64 Bucknell. Well it is going to hell in a hand basket now folks. We are having another poor shooting game and it is like we have 2 different Navy teams, and the bad one showed up tonight.

Final 59-75 Bucknell.

We never had the shot all night long. In the Army game we couldn’t shoot and got lucky, but I knew if we did that again this game we would get beat…and we did. We shot 36% to their 49% and were horribly out rebounded 47-31. 17 of those 47 rebounds were offensive…that hurt. We really didn’t do anything right. Valley didn’t show up until the last 5 minutes of the game and by then it was way too late.

Conference Notes:
Congratulations to Bucknell as they get an invite to the NCAA tournament.

Now the question will be if we have any post season invites...

Penn St. (15-14) @ Navy (25-6)

We get to host the first round NIT game against Penn St. This is good news of course as we are 12-1 on the season at home with our only loss being by a point.

Penn St. is 3-8 on the road and comes in averaging 66 a game and gives up 67. Not a bad team in rebounds but one of the best in blocks and free throw shooting. They have on injured player who averages 7 a game and plays about 20 minutes, so that could bother them a bit…not sure yet. I scout their team and think that overall, we can compete with these guys if we play like we normally do, especially at home.

The Lineup:
Lindtner vs. Hamilton – Even
Rouse vs. Nimmons – Advantage Navy
Konrad vs. Earley – Advantage Navy
Hensley vs. Jones – Even
Valley vs. Turnbull – Even

Earley is a true freshman and this kid has loads of potential. I just hope he doesn’t show too much of it here in this game against us. Valley has an advantage over Turnbull and his bad defense so he will hopefully go off on him this game. Lindtner will be on Nimmons and Valley will be on Jones. Penn St. relies on their guard play to get most of their points so our guards will have to do the same and get some points but also play some good D. This game will be a battle of the guards and the SF as both teams rely on these guys. Whichever team gets the big guys in the game will most likely pull it out. The home court advantage also helps us out greatly.

14:28 13-11 Navy. Penn St. comes out with a tough 2-3 zone but the guards still are playing nicely. All the starters for us have scored.
10:10 25-24 Navy. Real good game going on here. Both teams shooting fairly similar so far, but the glaring stat is the butt kicking we are getting on the glass.
4:34 35-37 Penn St. We lost our 7 point lead and called a timeout, but that hasn’t helped yet.
Halftime 48-48. This is a battle, let me tell you. We are shooting 46% to their 44% but being out rebounded 28-18 and that isn’t good. Thankfully we have caused 9 turnovers to only 4 of our own. Valley is doing his job and has scored 15. The good news is that Hamilton is out for the rest of the game due to an injury and Penn St. is in a bit of foul trouble. Hopefully those 2 things will help us out in the end and the crowd can get into it.

14:37 54-56 Penn St. Binette is getting some cheap fouls called on him for real. 3 quick fouls are called while he is guarding Earley and they are debatable. The fouls are getting called in great numbers on us this half with our 7th being called in just a bit over 5 minutes.
9:02 65-65. Nobody wants to pull away. That or nobody will let the other pull away. I have to say though, that our team is in better shape and needs to take advantage of Penn St. being a bit tired.
5:00 73-70 Navy. Penn St. is visibly getting worn out yet they hang in there. Rouse just missed 2 free throws to help our cause. We are 63% from the line in the game so far.
2:42 81-78 Navy. Lindtner just drew a charge and the crowd is going wild. Lindtner earns a pizza for the team (a rule my old high school coach made up for when we drew a charge)
1:25 85-80 Navy. We pull away with another bucket by Rouse and now just want to hold on.

Final 90-84 Navy. Well, we did it! We win the first round of the NIT tourney and we will have no rest and travel to Tennessee to play tomorrow.

We ended up shooting 47% to their 42% but again were out rebounded 51-40. We caused 18 turnovers to our 9. Overall we played well, and at least won the game. I have no real complaints. Valley gets POG.

Navy (26-6) @ Tennessee (18-12)

We come into this game on no rest at all and a big time opponent to play. The toughest opponent we have played. In fact, they scare me. They have an offense ranked right up there with us 14th nationally at 80 points a game. They bring the 17th best rebounding team in the nation too. That is no good for us at all as we have been out rebounded in most the games we play. Oh yeah, the are ranked in the top 50 in rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, and 3 point shooting. Fun times headed our way!

The Lineup:
Lindtner vs. Masek – Advantage Tenn.
Rouse vs. Benedict – Advantage Tenn.
Konrad vs. Nolan – Advantage Tenn.
Hensley vs. Fenwick – Advantage Tenn.
Valley vs. Castro – Even

Well there you have it folks. Doesn’t look too good all around. Nolan is the man averaging 19 a game and 7 rebounds. Fenwick gets 12 a game while Benedict gets 11. Masek gets 11 rebounds a game. We have nobody we can go after on defense since their whole team is pretty good defensively. We will need some luck…maybe a 60% shooting night or some stuff like that. I guess this is why I get paid the big bucks to try and find a weakness in a team and go after it. Valley and Hensley give us our best chances to score, and maybe Lindtner. Ill let the game go and make the adjustments as I see fit. Good luck boys!

14:32 6-9 Tenn. Hey, we missed our first 5 shots and still only trail by 3. Not bad at all. Masek is killing us right now though, but he is on the bench now and I will probably double up on him when he is back.
9:32 18-15 Navy. You are reading this right. Hensley is having a good game and Lindtner and Rouse are blocking shots left and right inside.
5:07 28-19 Navy. The 5 people who traveled to Tennessee for this game are thrilled so far! We are shooting well, which I felt was our only hope…that and the fact that Tenn. is shooting badly so far.
Halftime 37-26 Navy. Well we are shooting 50% to their 28%. As expected though we are being killed on the glass 28-17. We have caused 10 turnovers to our 8 and blocked 6 of their shots. 20 minutes to go…

14:25 54-32 Navy. Um…we are shooting 55% from the field now and im amazed at what we are doing overall. Binette gets a steal and we are now up 56-32. Tennessee calls their last timeout.
9:08 70-44 Navy. I cant believe my eyes. We are shooting so good it is amazing…the boys are doing what I only wished for. They are at 59% now by the way.
5:13 73-47 Navy. We hit a little bump in the road, but so does Tennessee, so I think we will be alright. We will slow the pace down and get out of this game with a big upset.

Final 83-62 Navy. We only produced 13 points in the last 9 minutes, but we had enough of a cushion and Tennessee had a bad night shooting and were just fine. Overall we shot 55% from the field to their 33% and we narrowed the rebounding margin to 36-44 advantage Tenn. We both had 18 turnovers but we blocked 8 shots and took their inside guys out of the game. Rouse gets POG and overall all the guys played well.

3rd round of NIT

LSU (18-14) @ Navy (27-6)

Well, we are pretty happy we have got this far and now we face off against another SEC team in LSU. LSU has the 8th best rebounding team in the country…that is great yet again as we love playing teams that can rebound better than us. Other than that they rank near the middle of the pack in most the other categories however; they are a good blocking team and well disciplined in fouls. They average 70 a game and give up 69.

The Lineup:
Lindtner vs. Yu – Even OR Lindtner vs. Wolfson – Advantage LSU
Rouse vs. Dittmer – Advantage Navy
Konrad vs. Smothers – Even
Hensley vs. Williamsn – Advantage LSU
Valley vs. Ridley – Even

Im not sure yet who LSU will start at C. They started Yu last game but Wolfson has started some too in place of their injured C. Williams is the man for LSU averaging 15 a game so Valley will obviously be guarding him. All their starters are good at playing D but our biggest advantage is again Rouse in this game. Again though, the guards will need to step it up in order for us to win. Our hopes lie in rebounding..hahahahaha…and our home court advantage and that we shoot well and cause some turnovers.

Yu gets the start so that helps overall I think.

14:53 14-6 Navy. LSU jumps out to 4-0 lead as we missed some stupid shots, but we turn it around and go on a 6-0 run causing them to call a T.O. We then go on an 8-0 run and have them call another T.O.
9:50 28-12 Navy. We have fire up under our boys butts and they are playing well. Also our rebounding LSU is a bonus too.
4:58 34-19 Navy. LSU has now used up all their timeouts.
Halftime 39-31 Navy. We fell apart there for the last 5 minutes and LSU went on a 12-5 run to end the half. We aren’t shooting that great at 39% but LSU is shooting only 30%. Rebounds are 29-25 our advantage. We keep doing that and shooting better, and we will win. Hensley and Konrad are in foul trouble with 3 each. Hopefully they get tired since they are out of timeouts.

14:09 49-44 Navy. Im trying to run LSU into the ground since they have no timeouts and hope they just get plain tired. Right now though it isn’t working as planned. Both teams continue to shoot poorly.
9:18 55-50 Navy. Still waiting for us to go on a run and put LSU out of their misery. You would think having no team timeouts would hurt sometime.
4:50 67-62 Navy. LSU tied it up at 60 but we rally back and hit some clutch shots after our called timeout.
2:07 78-73 Navy. LSU will not die and nails a 3 to get within 2, but Valley answers right back and hits his own 3.

Final 85-75 Navy.

Wow! What can I say but that I am amazed at yet another victory. We only shot 38% but held LSU to 36% shooting as well. We also out rebounded them 52-43 which was amazing in its own right. We caused 11 turnovers to our 10, so that wasn’t much a factor this game. Being 22-26 from the line helped out quite a bit, especially down the stretch when they started the fouling game. Valley gets POG but Rouse in my mind deserved it and Lindtner also played well.

Rouse had 10 offensive rebounds on his own and many of those were put backs. He played his butt off and did a great job. Lindtner added 16 boards himself. Overall each guy did a nice job and we keep on advancing in the NIT tournament.

We advance to the NIT West Regional Championship game and will host it against Colorado. Colorado has also had to play the extra game in this bracket as the #7 seed.

hollmt, looks like you are having a terrific run. I'm guessing no one expected to see Navy's first year include extended post-season tourney action.

Colorado (19-14) @ Navy (28-6)

NIT WEST REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

We are the only game in the nation today so we get all the publicity and national exposure. How you like them apples? Colorado is a tough team and they played in a tough conference with Oklahoma and Oklahoma St., Kansas, and Texas all ranked in the top 25 in the county. They bring with them the 49th ranked scoring offense in the land at 74 points a game, the 9th best FG shooting team at 47% and the 2nd best 3 point shooting team at an amazing 42%. That is crazy!

The Lineup:
Lindtner vs. Dahl – Advantage Colorado
Rouse vs. Adams – Even
Konrad vs. Greene – Advantage Navy
Hensley vs. Riley – Advantage Colorado
Valley vs. Desmillescamp – Even

Yeah, so Dahl averages a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds per game. Desmillescamp averages 18 a game himself and hits 49% of his 3-point shots. Valley will have his hands full guarding him today. Rouse might be able to take a gander at scoring some points for us against Adams and Hensley might be able to do the same. We will need to keep them from hitting 3s all day on us and if we can do that, then this little Cinderella story might continue.

14:48 11-10 Navy. We come out a bit cold but somehow have the lead even with us having 5 turnovers.
9:43 19-16 Navy. Hensley just hits a 3 to give us the lead again. We are shooting horribly and are missing breakaway layups. We are rebounding well though, and that is the good news.
4:47 27-29 Colorado. It has been a close game all the way. We are shooting better, but are terrible on the line where we have missed too many shots.
Halftime 30-43 Colorado. Well, as you see, we sort of fell apart there in the last 5 minutes and shot like crap. Valley thought that he would just shoot 3s for the rest of the half there and miss them all. That’s ok though, he has made his fair share. We are now shooting even worse at 39% to their 53% and both teams have 18 rebounds. We are having perhaps the worst day of handling the ball and stupid turnovers having picked up 14 in the 1st half. We will need to have better control there and shoot better if we think we can have a chance.

14:30 43-53 Colorado. We closed the gap to 6 points but have picked up some stupid fouls. Lindtner and Lyles both have 4 so we have problems finding a C and anyone who can then stop Dahl, which we have done fairly well this game so far.
9:21 53-60 Colorado. Rouse just scores and is fouled and misses his free throw…rebounded by Lyles who is fouled and missed both his free throws….that is killing us!
3:09 60-74 Colorado. We could only get as close as 6 points but that was it. Colorado has our number and we can only hope…

Final 61-79 Colorado.

Well that is it folks…the season is done. We shot a paltry 39% to their 52% and had 20 turnovers to their 14. We were 15-33 from the line which hurt us badly. We tried but didn’t have the muscle we needed and the shot tonight and fell to a good team.

So we lost to the NIT champ…not bad I guess and sort of a consolation prize right? Ha!

Well it was a good season and rather surprising we went as far as we did in the NIT tourney. We will be losing 42 points a game with our graduating seniors in Valley, Hensley, Lindtner and Lyles. 3 of those were our starters and huge contributors for our team. That will be quite a bit to replace, but hopefully we have the guys who can do it. I believe that Warden can replace Hensley fairly well if not better actually as he has a better shot overall but his defense is a bit questionable. Maynor can fill the shoes of Valley and he is only a freshman so he has loads of time to get as good and will have quite a career with us at Navy. Rouse will probably get his normal position next year at C and the way he played to end the season, I think he will perform as good if not better than Lindtner did this season. Konrad might be moved to PF though I will have to think that over and Binette will probably become the new starter at SF. Anyway, here are the season stats:

Hensley was the mystery guy to me. He never really did what I thought he could quite do. One of those guys that got hot sometimes, but most the time just sort of played and was there. He was totally looked past in post season awards and I was a bit surprised at that, but not shocked.

Eh, I get coach of the year, but no biggie, I had some good players. You are only as good as your players anyway, and the real test will come once I see what I can do without the 3 starters I lose. Bucknell and us dominated the conference and it shows in the selections. Maynor gets a good award and has the potential to be the next Valley or even surpass him.

All in all a great year (albeit it took me 7 weeks to complete) and we look forward to a new year with some new guys at the helm and to see what they can do.

What an off-season we get. First things first…we do get a promotion and we are now in a Prestige 2 conference and are headed to the Ivy League. Our own prestige jumped up to 47 (that went up a whole whopping 1 point by the way).

In other news, our recruiting class gets ranked 83rd in the country. Arizona had the top recruiting class. We also have an amazingly high RPI rating of 82. I don’t know if we can keep that up, but hey, we will try.

I get 3 job offers, from Middle Tenn. St., St. Francis-NY, and Youngstown, and of course I say “negative” to all 3 of them as my pride and joy Navy beckons me to stay and lead them to the promise land.

Now as for the coaches, we lose our recruiting coordinator who had a skill of 45 in that area and we have to go shop for another and land Chris Morris and he is a drop in ratings at 40. I was shopping for a new Asst. Coach, but found none that really stood out nor one that I could afford for the ones who did look remotely good. So I stick with Mullins in that department and also stick with Fortson as our scouting director.

Code:
Navy Athletic Director Notes -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Current Goal: Compete for the conference championship. Job Evaluation: The board of trustees is currently delighted with your performance. Budget Data: Total Budget: $317,500 Staff Salaries: $167,500 Season Recruiting Budget: $100,000 Monthly Recruiting Budget: $10,000 Training Facilities: Current Rating: 51 Conference Rank: 3

Yeah the board is happy with me, and I would suppose so. At least they only want me to compete this season in our new conference and I do hope we can do that. First thing I ask for this month though is better facilities and I hope they approve that. I notice a that I should have some more money to spend on recruiting this season, where it says I have only 10K to work with, I think that should be more and it might be adjusted before recruiting time comes along.

Well I take a look at the schedule and I sure don’t like how the Ivy League does things. Many back to back games against teams and im not really digging that, but I will make do I suppose. We do get 7 home games to schedule though so that is good news.

Well I make some schedule requests and request my 14 teams. Of those, 12 accept and Georgia Tech and Colorado decide they don’t want to come to my court and play me. I understand why though, as I beat the crap out of teams on my home court and they are afraid! I also get an answer to my training facilities request and get a big fat NO this time. Apparently, winning your conference, being named coach of the year in the Patriot League, and winning 3 games in the NIT tourney means squat. We need more nuclear subs and stuff….

So I am off to find to more opponents.

I get Youngstown St. to come to our place and play us in place of the chickens of Colorado. Georgia Tech turns me down again though. I decide to accept an offer to play St. Francis-PA at home to round out the scheduling process

I do notice though that I am now afforded 15K a month to go recruit, so that helps a bit and I will need to get some players. This year I will be able to look on the West coast more as last season I stayed close to home until late in the process and settled for other guys I wasn’t after in the early stages.

So the Memorial games are set and Calis’ Dartmouth team and I will have 2 battles a year.

Now im off to look for some recruits and hope I can find some good ones to replace Rouse, Konrad and Jenkins. 2 of them will be starters as you know.

Congrats on the NIT run, nice to see the pearlfloyd memorial on the schedule, I'll be sure to get Navy on our's next season.

I live about 10 minutes from the academy, go to their basketball games every once in awhile but it's getting harder and harder to watch. Good luck next season.

I go after some recruits to replace my graduating seniors. I am losing 4 players this season but only 3 of them are scholarship players. Rouse, Konrad and Binette. Jenkins is non-schollie. I land one recruit so far and am in good running for 2 others. Here is the first guy:

We snagged this guy from some big time programs. All-State boy Saunders should provide us with something right? He should become a pretty good rebounder. Although his scoring prowess is nothing to write home about he is pretty strong and well disciplined and will be a good fit maybe in a couple years after a red shirt season.

This season I shake some things up. I thought going into the season, that Binette would become the new starting SF. I changed my mind and am moving Warden to that position.

C: Rouse – will provide me the inside player I need and some dang good post D. He can get some offensive rebounds for us as well.

PF: Konrad – I move him to PF this season for his inside ability and outside ability and he will be a 3 pt threat and not too many other PF will be able to guard him outside. He has the body and frame to play this position and will do fine.

SF: Warden- He is big enough to play this position, though he may be shorter than some of his opponents. He gives us an inside-outside presence to go along with Konrad and Rouse.

SG: Bechtel – the true freshman will be starting for us this season and comes in as good as Hensley was when he left. I have high hopes for this kid.

PG: Maynor – no surprise here really as he deserved this spot and is the best ball handler and passer combined that we have. He will give us some points as well.

2nd string:
C: Jenkins
PF: Ivey
SF: Binette
SG: Salyers
PG: Kremheller

3rd string:
C: Smith
PF: Muldoon
SF: Hernandez
SG: empty
PG: Wiegand

OK, so my thinking is this. With Rouse, Konrad, and Warden I will have 3 guys who can be an inside threat. On the outside I will have Konrad, Warden, Bechtel being able to knock it down from anywhere. I think that should be hard to defend or at least cause a bit of problems to some teams.

Jenkins can come in and be counted on for points while Smith can get some rebounds if that is what I am after. So these 2 guys will split time im sure.

Ivey can get the points at the PF spot and get rebounds as well, and Muldoon can play D if I am needing that.

Binette will probably get 15-20 minutes a game and may eventually become the starter as the season wears on depending on what Warden does here. Either way SF is my strongest position.

Salyers can come out and hit some shots for me if needed, and that is about it.

Kremheller can hit shots and pass the ball and play some D if needed and will be.

Wiegand can handle the ball and that is about it.

I think we match up well with our team from last season. We field only 2 seniors, 1 junior, 1 sophomore and 1 freshman on the starting 5, so we are a bit younger and have more potential. Defense is where our biggest problem will come but im hoping our fast paced game and good conditioned guys will help that problem out some.

Army (0-0) @ Navy (0-0)

We are pretty familiar with these guys playing them 3 times last year and beating them all 3 times, albeit, the last 2 times were much closer than I wanted. The bring back 3 starters from last years squad in Prater, Fannin and Smith.

The Lineup:
Rouse vs. Lafrance – Advantage Navy
Konrad vs. Prater – Advantage Navy
Warden vs. Lansing – Even
Bechtel vs. Fannin – Even
Maynor vs. Smith – Advantage Navy

Wow, im used to typing Valley and Hensley and Lindtner…that took me a bit getting used to. Anyway…Rouse has a huge advantage over Lafrance but Lafrance is their best inside scoring threat so Rouse will be on him all day. Bechtel and Warden have the best chance of getting some points on the board for us so they will also be go to guys this game. We will go with the Man D and switch it up if I see fit.

14:57 12-2 Navy. So far we look pretty good on offense. Some turnovers we have are sloppy but we can work around that.
9:56 19-10 Navy. We are in a bit of a slump now with the 2nd string in. Warden picks up foul #2 so I will be watching him.
4:36 30-20 Navy. Army gets within 6 but we pull away a bit more. Warden and Kremheller both have picked up 3 fouls and will sit for the remainder of the half.
Halftime 44-26 Navy. The D picked up and so did the O. We pulled away nicely to end the half. We are shooting a nice 52% to their 32% and have mixed up playing a man D and a Matchup zone on them. We are also 91% from the line. That is nice for a change.

14:18 58-35 Navy. We continue to play well except for turnovers. I have a feeling this might be one of our problems this season but hope it is only an exception in this game.
7:15 77-47 Navy. Almost over and playing well on all fronts. 3 players are in double figures already with another almost there too.

Final 93-56 Navy. Well we put a whoopin’ on them! We ended up shooting 56% to their 37% and we out rebounded them 42-24! We also shot 82% from the line on 27-33 shooting there. We had 19 turnovers which I don’t like, but we caused 24 so it worked itself out. The freshman Ivey and Bechtel played well and Kremheller…well he fouled players well. Warden played less cause he got into foul trouble but Binette played good in his spot. Rouse gets POG and a double-double.

Great stuff, hollmt, I didn't know at first how I would like the slower pace but it really helps you get to know the players to read each game summary.

pearlfloyd: thanks for the congrats. i was a bit dissapointed not to win my own conference tourney but the NIT run was nice and unexpected. i figured id get by the first round and that was about it.

Peregrine: thanks for your reading! i know the slow pace is different than what the others do. i like reading their reports very much and hoped maybe others would enjoy mine and the change of pace. takes a bit longer (7 weeks for the last season) to finish a season, but i grow real familiar with the players and even my conference opponents. so hopefully some others find the same thing interesting.

UC Riverside (0-0) @ Navy (1-0)

Well, its about time for the first ever Godzilla Blitz Memorial. This year UC Riverside travels to our court…they just might end up traveling to my court every year for that matter too, since I don’t like traveling to the west coast. HA! Anyway, last years squad was 6-25 with all their wins coming in conference play. They bring back 3 starters from last years team also in Ruiz, Dreyer and Young and another player who started in 12 games.

The Lineup:
Rouse vs. Young – Advantage Navy
Konrad vs. Dreyer – Advantage Navy
Warden vs. Hancock – Advantage Navy
Bechtel vs. Ruiz – Advantage Navy
Maynor vs. Dewar – Advantage Navy

Yeah, so across the board it looks like we have the full advantage here in this game. Ruiz was their leading returning scorer from last season with 10 a game so he is the main threat we need to contain. We will go with an inside game this time and Rouse, Konrad and Warden will be the go to guys.

14:36 12-7 Navy. UCR jumped out 4-0 with us missing our first 4 shots be we came back nicely and went on a 9-0 run causing UCR to call a timeout.
10:00 18-9 Navy. Well the offenses just aren’t doing squat for either team. Maynor has sat for awhile after he picked up 2 fouls early and he needs to be out there playing.
Halftime 31-15 Navy. Wow! No offense by UCR and none really for us. We shot good but just didn’t seem to take many shots. UCR is playing a slow game too and we are only getting so many opportunities to score. Warden leads all scorers with 11 and is not in foul trouble, so he will get much more playing time than he did last game.

14:23 46-21 Navy. We continue to slowly pull away. UCR takes about 30 seconds per possession but they cant hit a shot tonight.
6:46 64-28 Navy. This Matchup zone D is killing UCR tonight as they aren’t shooting well at all and haven’t even came close to finding a shot yet.

Final 82-39 Navy. Tonight was the night for the shooters. Our D played awesome too. We held UCR to 29% and caused them 16 turnovers to our 55% and only 4 turnovers! We also out rebounded them 37-33. Warden led all scorers and I think I finally might have a solid SF this year. Konrad gets a double-double, and Bechtel, the freshman sensation who has played 2 great games so far gets POG with his performance. All in all, it was a great game.

So far the team looks good and handled the ball well this game. Ivey and Bechtel have showed they can play with anyone and even Kremheller got some points this game.

Our next game is a revenge game from last season against Stony Brook who beat us by 2 points. We are on the road for that game.

Navy (2-0) Stony Brook (0-1)

This is a revenge game from last season when Stony Brook beat us by 2 points. I benched Konrad for a game after he stupidly took a 3 when I told the whole team not to when all we needed was a 2 point bucket to tie and go to O.T. I was pretty pissed about that loss cause we should of won. Well, anyway, I put them on the schedule again, and again I will travel to their court cause I wanted to beat them on their home court. Im vindictive like that I guess. What is even worse is they finished 9-20 last season with 1 of those wins against us. What is good is they bring back 4 starters from last years team so we get to face almost the same faces. Last game these guys scored only 29 points, so I hope they aren’t ready to explode on us.

The Lineup:
Rouse vs. Beatty – Advantage Navy
Konrad vs. Lark – Advantage Navy
Warden vs. Grimaldi – Advantage Navy
Bechtel vs. Hackman – Advantage Navy
Maynor vs. Zapata – Even

All the guys except for Lark we played last season. We of course bring some fresh faces their way though. Rouse has the overall advantage but will be held in check with Beatty and his D. Konrad will be looked to, to go outside a bit and make Lark guard him off the post. This will be an outside game I think with Warden, Bechtel and Maynor getting the ball and shooting it. We will also again play the Matchup D as it has been working quite well.

15:06 6-6. Slow paced game again as SB likes to milk the dang clock. We need to be able to hit the outside shots and Rouse will be needed to get the offensive rebounds if we miss. Konrad is already in foul trouble picking up 2 and is now sitting. Ivey has made both of our turnovers.
9:52 13-12 Navy. Let me tell you our problems:
1) Konrad has 2 fouls and his sub Ivey has 2 fouls making me play my 3rd string PF
2) Maynor is out for the rest of the game with a pulled groin.
3) Binette, my key sub all around has 2 fouls.
4) We are 1-5 from the charity stripe
5:09 17-19 SB. Crap! We are shooting well, but we hardly have the ball as SB hangs on to it for 35 seconds each time they have it.

Halftime 28-30 SB. We fall down by 6 and battle back to within 2. Then fall down by 7 and battle back again. Konrad hasn’t scored, while Ivey has 7 points so he will be playing in the 2nd half much more. Our problems are we are in huge foul trouble with 14 team fouls. We also are only shooting 22% from the line!!!!!!!! We need to stay out of foul trouble and make some dang free throws.

14:54 34-33 Navy. We get the lead back finally…now we just need to hold on to it. I have 3 freshmen on the court right now and they have given me 23 of my points.
10:05 41-42 SB. What the hell is wrong with my boys? OK, we are getting it handed to us pretty much and Warden steals the pass (which is great and all) and dunks on them to tie the game…and then he thinks that is the greatest thing since sliced bread and taunts the bench and we get a T called up on us. Did I miss something here kid?
5:37 47-50 SB. Konrad fouls out and gave us a whopping 3 points.
3:23 47-53 SB. Well we just shot ourselves in the foot with our second T. This time on Bechtel as he fouls and argues. Earlier in the game SB did the same thing and were let go.
3:20 50-53 SB. Bechtel answers back and hits a 3.
2:52 53-53. We call a needed timeout and Kremheller hits another 3 for us to tie it up but gets charged with a freaking T for taunting. The dang refs need to let us play and stop with the T’s for being excited.
1:28 56-55 Navy. Kremheller hits another 3 but doesn’t taunt this time…heaven forbid we show any excitement at all…………!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
:44 58-55 Navy. Rouse dunks from a pass from Kremheller.
:18 58-57 Navy. SB answers back…our ball and they commit the foul putting Bechtel on the line for a 1 and 1….

He hits the first…59-57
He hits the 2nd…60-57

SB ball and Grimaldi takes a 3 and misses and that’s the ballgame!

Final 60-57 Navy.

We shot 47% from the line but Bechtel came up big and hit the biggest foul shots of the game for us. We shot 46% from the field which wasn’t bad, to their 37%, and we caused 20 turnovers to our 8, but because we couldn’t shoot a free throw (7-15) were in so much foul trouble, and were out rebounded 37-24 we almost blew it. That and the fact that the refs really took us out of the game each time we tied it and got pumped they would call a T on us. We had 3 of them called in this game. In fact we were called for 29 team fouls to their 15. Damn Refs!

Kremheller another one of our freshman gets POG honors and deserves it.

hollmt, I'm interested in how you actually run the games. I've just recently bought FBCB, and since I'm not that knowledgeable about basketball strategy, I've been simming most of my games and just keeping track of overall performances. When I do coach a game, I like to use continue to see one play at a time, even though it's very slow, it helps me see the flow of the game.

Do you do this or just sim the game at a slow enough speed to keep track of what's going on?

i sim at 2 speed and hit continue for each possesion. its fast enough to so the game doesnt take too long, and slow enough to see what is going on with each player.

it takes about 40 minutes to play the game i guess and report on it every 5 minutes of game time. not that long i guess.

Have to love a game that can be a blast played at 40 minutes per game or 40 minutes per season.

First things first, Im having serious issues with my starting PF Arnold Konrad, as he is just not contributing much, while his sub, which by the way is a freshman, is out playing him in half the time. Take a look:

Code:
Navy Player Averages Name Pos G GS Min Pts OReb Reb Ast Stl Blk TO Fl Chris Ivey PF 3 0 13.3 7.0 0.3 4.0 0.7 0.3 0.0 2.0 1.7 Arnold Konrad PF 3 3 24.3 7.3 1.7 5.0 2.0 0.7 0.3 0.7 2.3

Now, I already am starting one freshman this season, and I am concerned about starting 2 freshman, but I just have to give this kid a start and see what he can do with 20+ minutes of playing time.

Navy (3-0) @ Gardner Webb (0-3)

These guys were 12-16 last season and aren’t doing any better to start this season off. They are pretty bad on offense scoring only 50 points a game and allowing 70.

The Lineup:
Rouse vs. Cooks – Advantage Navy
Ivey vs. Villa – Even
Warden vs. Bourne – Advantage Navy
Bechtel vs. Orta – Advantage Navy
Kremheller vs. Spence – Advantage Navy

So the true freshman, Chris Ivey, is going to get his first start of the year. I figure there is no better time to do it than right now. I know his weaknesses, (free throws and defense and turnovers) but his inside strength and his rebounding ability is great, especially being only a freshman. Also Kremheller will be starting due to Maynor needing just a bit more time to heal his pulled groin.

Fisher is their main scoring threat with 10 a game and he doesn’t even start! Cooks is a good post defender, but overall, I think Rouse should have an easy time with him and should score at will. Villa is good on D too, so Ivey will have a bit of a test here. Warden should also have a big game and take advantage of Bourne. Warden, Ivey and Bechtel will be getting the majority of the shots this game in a balanced attack. We will stick with the Matchup D this game like we have pretty much all season so far.

14:52 10-5 Navy. We have been called on 7 team fouls in 5 minutes of play. The refs are completely taking us out of our game and calling the stupidest fouls. Bechtel and Warden already have 2 fouls. That crap has to stop!
9:46 16-14 Navy. Well, we only get 1 foul called on us in the span, but we forget how to shoot and hold onto the ball. GW has stolen 4 passes from us and caused us 5 turnovers. It might help it we could make some free throws too.
4:31 21-19 Navy. This is terrible. The boys cant hit a thing and committing fouls all over the place. We aren’t passing the ball well and finding an open shot at all.
Halftime 34-29 Navy. We get a bit of a cushion to end the half. We have 12 turnovers and have committed a whopping 16 team fouls so far this game. Nice control huh? Bechtel has been held scoreless, and this is a guy who is shooting 70% on the season. Better ball control and less fouls and we will survive this game.

14:26 41-33 Navy. Villa for GB has fouled out after picking up his 2nd T and was ejected. So maybe Ivey or Konrad can step up some now.
9:07 48-38 Navy. Ivey fouls out and didn’t really do too much. Finally though I think we are wearing on them and getting them tired…at the expense of having to wear my own guys out too.
5:06 53-44 Navy. Still holding on, but not really by much as GB keeps coming back and we have to fight them off with a stick.

Final 61-53 Navy.

Well I don’t have the stats in front of me since the box score didn’t save properly as I think I hit exit right when the POG was being announced which was Rouse by the way. It doesn’t much matter anyway. You will just have to take my word for it that we played like crap…and walked out with a win luckily!

Here are my problems and im wondering if we are that good or just a matter of coincidence.
1) Foul troubles! We are getting too many fouls and we picked up another 28-30 fouls in this game.
2) We get out rebounded most the time and were out rebounded again in this game.
3) Our boys aren’t as well conditioned as the team last year when Valley and Hensley could play all day pretty much. Bechtel has good endurance, but today he had no shot.
4) Warden has a great shot, but is in foul trouble most the time and only played about 12 minutes this game…not acceptable.
5) Ditto for Ivey
6) Where the hell is Konrad? I still remember thinking he would be a key player on last years team.
7) We miss Maynor. The kid can pass the ball and dish it out. Maybe the last 2 games was a factor of missing him. With him in the game we scored 93 and 82 points. Without him, we scored 60 and 61 and barely pull out a win. The other 2 games were blow out.
8) Free throw shooting is worse than last season now at 68%. Not acceptable.

I think that about covers it. Our starters are only getting about 25 minutes per game with the exception of Rouse at 31 and Bechtel at 28. I think with Maynor coming back we will dish it out better and wont be so tired. Im only playing 5 guards since I bumped up Warden to a SF this season and it is wearing on them badly for the last 2 games w/o Maynor.

Wow, lots of upsets this week with S. Carolina knocking off 2 ranked teams and MSU losing to 2 unranked teams and the same for N. Carolina.

So, Maynor will be back next game and we are at home against Air Force. That could be a factor too I guess, being back at home, but we will see.

Hollmt, what kind of PF ratings do your players have? If you have one or two guys with low ratings they could be getting hit with a lot of unnecessary fouls, and often other guys will get fouled trying to step up their game when the other guys get benched.

Edit- At least that's the explanation I've come up with. I've had situations where one guy with a terrible foul rating was racking up a ton of fouls. When I benched him for a game the total fouls for the rest of the team were much less.

peregrine: Ivey, Warden and Kremheller have horrible foul ratings. I knew that going in, but they have such good attributes in other areas i have to play them. I guess i sort of weigh the good with the bad and hope that the good outweighs the bad and we score some points and can stay in relative low foul trouble.

those were the problems the last 2 games anyway with foul trouble. Maynor is much better in the foul department and Bechtel and Rouse are fine as well. We also run a high press and trap D and that doesnt help matters much.

Air Force (1-2) @ Navy (4-0)

We played these boys last season and beat them on our own court 85-70. They bring 3 starters from last season’s squad and I remember one of the real well. Isenburg is his name and he averages 16 a game this season. Air Force has a troubled scoring offense but their defense is rather good holding teams to 61 a game.

The Lineup:
Rouse vs. Sommers – Advantage Navy
Konrad vs. Isenburg – Advantage Navy
Warden vs. Bruner – Advantage Navy
Bechtel vs. Willimas – Even
Maynor vs. Ortiz – Even

The advantage Konrad and Warden have isn’t by much at all. I decide to go with Konrad again, because I feel Ivey does well off the bench and plays a good role there for now. Maynor is back as well and that is good news. We need to stop Isenburg and Bruner who average 16 and 10 and combine for almost half of Air Forces points. Air Force averages 56 a game. Bechtel, Warden and Rouse will be getting the ball. Hopefully Bechtel finds his shot after the last games poor performance. We will be in the Matchup zone again and might double up on Isenburg and/or Bruner as the game progresses.

14:46 7-7. Both teams come out shooting pretty badly. We pick up only 3 fouls though!!!
9:57 16-11 Navy. Our D shuts them down a bit while the guard play picks up and some shots start to fall. Still a bit more turnovers than I like, especially with Maynor in the game.
5:11 25-19 Navy. Air Force is playing a 2-3 and making our guards hit shots. The inside game just isn’t there and that is to be expected. We now start to double up on Isenburg as he is getting hot and has 8 points.
Halftime 39-29 Navy. We end the half shooting 45% which could be better, since we average above 50% a game. However, we are holding Air Force to 33% from the field. Isenburg is killing us as he has16 points. We need to stop him sometime. We have 9 turnovers which I don’t like too much, but hopefully that will change in this half. Maynor has 3 fouls and needs to pay attention.

14:43 52-33 Navy. We open it up to start the half nicely. Warden picks up #4 though and will be on the bench again…losing valuable playing time.
7:57 68-37 Navy. Yeah, so we opened it up quite nicely in this half and playing all around better ball. Warden fouled out about 3 minutes ago. Rouse already has a double-double (he had one last game too) for his 3rd of the year in 5 games.

Final 84-53 Navy.

Let me tell you, we are a different team at home and with Maynor. Now we will see how we do with Maynor on the road for a whole game. We shot 46% to their 30% which was pretty nice. We also out rebounded them 48-38 which was even nicer…to win a rebounding Matchup. We fixed the turnover problem only committing 4 in the 2nd half for a total of 12 in the game. Bechtel and Ivey both were 1 rebound short of their own double-double…they played a nice game and Bechtel gets another POG award. Ivey is going to stay on the bench…I think he gets nervous when he starts and will be a good 20 minute player and then next season have his time to shine. Unless Konrad just sits on his hands, then things will change.

Take a look at our guys and take a look at Isenburg. This kid is good.

We move all the way up to 223 in the RPI. That is nice.

Our defense is playing quite nicely and the Matchup zone is doing its job. Im rather impressed with it.

We get some recruiting news, and im anxious to see if it is good…

Start of the new month and we get some good news, some bad news and some more bad news.

First the bad news. We lose our first player due to stupidity in our 2 year career. Burl Jenkins, our #2 C behind Rouse will be lost for a month cause he is failing a class. The kid is rated at 72 in smarts, but apparently fell off the wagon for a class and we will be without him. Good thing Rouse has good stamina cause now he will be depended on to play a few more minutes a game and Smith will be bumped up to back Rouse up. I possibly will play Ivey some at C too just to see what he can do and use him more.

More bad news. We went after 2 more guys and I really had my hopes up on this guy here:

Code:
RECRUIT DETAILS #42 SG Ricky Buckley -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Height: 6' 6" Weight: 208 JC: District of Colombia CC High School: Eastern High School Hometown: Washington, DC GPA: 2.33 Test Score: 1090 Rating: *** Attributes: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Type INS JPS FTS 3PS HND PAS ORB DRB PSD PRD STL BLK PFS QKN STR JMP STA -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Current: 14 98 62 60 44 44 8 37 8 97 22 49 59 81 71 42 64 Potential: C A B C C D F D F C C C Season Stats: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PTS OREB REB AST TOS A/T STL BLK PFS -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 22.9 1.2 4.4 3.7 2.1 1.78 0.9 2.5 2.4

I about lost a nut when I found this guy and saw his jumpshot and Perimeter D ability. Actually I liked about everything about him and his potential and I visited him quite a bit and threw everything I could at him…to no avail. What is worse is that Penn recruited him and Penn is in our new Ivy League Conference and we get to play him for probably the next 4 years! That is exciting news isn’t it?? Anyway…

Now the good news!

We get land another recruit…and here he is:

Code:
RECRUIT DETAILS #53 SF Hassan Buckley -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Height: 6' 5" Weight: 191 High School: Frazier High School Hometown: Perryopolis, PA GPA: 2.84 Test Score: 1030 Rating: *** Attributes: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Type INS JPS FTS 3PS HND PAS ORB DRB PSD PRD STL BLK PFS QKN STR JMP STA -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Current: 10 46 37 67 33 24 49 24 8 27 19 43 86 63 70 51 47 Potential: F A C C C D B D F C F B Season Stats: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PTS OREB REB AST TOS A/T STL BLK PFS -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14.8 2.1 5.7 1.6 2.1 0.76 0.9 2.2 1.5 Shooting Averages: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FGM FGA FG% FTM FTA FT% 3PM 3PA 3P% -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6.0 14.1 .426 0.6 1.1 .524 2.2 5.6 .393 Recruiting Notes: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Qualified: Yes Committed to Navy Rankings: #34 SF, East Region #34 Overall, East Region #13 SF High School Awards: None Top 5 Schools: *Navy, Western Kentucky, Miami-Ohio, Kentucky, Clemson

Buckley has a decent jump shot with much room for growth which is good. He is also quite a weapon from long range with some growth there and he still has growth for his defensive ability. One of the key things I am looking at now in my recruits is their ability to stay out of foul trouble and so far, Buckley and the other guy I got, Saunders have good foul ability.

So that is the news. I have given some thought to the foul trouble we have been in lately and attribute it to the fact that we have some bench players and one starter (Warden) who have bad foul ratings…we have 6 players rated under 50 in fouls:

Konrad – 40 (starter) – 2 fouls and .5 steals in 23 minutes
Muldoon – 38 ( 3rd string) 0 fouls and 0 steals in 3.5 minutes
Ivey – 17 ( 2nd string) – 1.5 fouls and .3 steals in 15 minutes
Warden – 11 (starter) – 4 fouls and 2.3 steals in 23 minutes
Salyers – 0 ( 2nd string) – 1.5 1.3 steals in 12 minutes
Kremheller –25 ( 2nd string) – 3 fouls and .8 steals in 15.5 minutes

So of those 6 guys the give me 12 fouls and 5.2 steals. As a team we get 17 fouls and 8.2 steals a game. We rank 90 in steals and 80 in fouls so we aren’t as bad as I figured. That and we also play a high tempo, press and trap game so it all works itself out.

Anyway, enough of me rambling, off to some games after my weekend off.

Really enjoying the pace of your dynasty.

Yeah, playing a high tempo man to man is the defense most prone to fouls, especially since your backcourt isn't the strongest defensively. You might consider dropping back into a zone to protect your kids if you get into trouble during a game. 2-3 is pretty effective for hiding someone in foul trouble. It would also be effective for hiding Ivey. He's pretty valuable offensively, but a real liability on defense.

corbes: youre right on the man D thing which is why ive been mixing it up with the matchup zone D this season. i have weaker post and perimeter guys this year with the loss of Lindtner and Valley from last season so i have to help out as much as i can with the zone. in looking at the teams stats from the country we cause 5.8 more turnovers than we commit and only pick up 2.8 more fouls than our opposition. So all in all, as long as the turnovers keep up we will be alright. The game when we foul and cant get a steal is the game we get our butts handed to us...it will come soon im sure when we jump in conference play.

thanks for reading too i appreciate the comments.

Next game vs. Liberty will be played later today.

Navy (5-0) @ Liberty ((1-1)

We are finally back playing some ball after a bit of a layoff. We travel to Lynchburg, VA. to play Liberty in our first ever meeting against these guys. Liberty brings back 4 starters from last seasons 5-23 squad. Liberty brings with them a good scoring D, only allowing 59 points a game and they also bring with them the #1 team in the land in turnovers. They only get 6 a game! They also rank #15 in team fouls picking up only 15 a game. Those 2 things don’t look good for us with all the foul trouble we are in lately.

The Lineup:
Rouse vs. Reyes – Advantage Navy
Konrad vs. McClain – Even
Warden vs. Harrold – Advantage Navy
Bechtel vs. Brown – Even
Maynor vs. Vincent – Even

Brown is the man who brings all of Liberty’s offense, scoring 18.5 per game. Vincent, Reyes and Harrold all bring about 9 points a game. Liberty has a good D so our guys are going to have to find some shots and pass the ball around. We need to stay out of foul trouble for once. Also, since we are without Jenkins, we will be having to run on a bit of fumes for the inside guys, so they will need to play well and play smart. Warden needs to play some this game and take advantage and go in side a bit on Harrold. Im tempted to put Warden in a low guarding situation. I will see how the game progresses though.

15:03 10-4 Navy. We have caused them to commit 5 turnovers, which is great. That and they have 4 fouls and we have only 1…all good news.
9:20 17-8 Navy. Our D is still playing well as usual, but we had some stupid turnovers which I don’t really care for. Overall though, we are playing and shooting well and staying out of foul trouble. Liberty is already in the penalty.
7:03 19-12 Navy. And just as soon as I open my mouth and feel good about the fouls, we pick up 5 in 2 minutes of play.
Halftime 30-17 Navy. Our offense kicked it up a notch there in the last 5 minutes and our D is still playing well. Liberty is only shooting 24% from the field. Both teams have made only one 3 pointer.

14:24 36-21 Navy. We pick up 5 fouls to start the half, but at least we are scoring…sort of.
9:56 45-31 Navy. We are getting no production from our guards. Bechtel needs to step up and score and Maynor needs to find some open men as he only has 3 assists so far.
4:35 53-46 Navy. Liberty is starting to get their shots to drop and we need to buckle down and play some D…hitting some shots would be a nice thing too.
1:46 57-52 Navy. Bechtel and Kremheller both miss the front end of their free throws and Liberty is battling back. We call a timeout.

Final 64-57 Navy. We pull another one out on the road. We ended up shooting 42% to their 35%, but we sucked on the line shooting 17-28 and were killed on the glass 47-34. Both of those stats are terrible and unacceptable. We did cause them 21 turnovers and only had 13 of our own. Also, we only had 19 fouls to their 21…so on those 2 fronts we performed well. Konrad decided to show up for this game and in doing so, he got POG honors. We shut down their SG Brown and held him to only 6 points.

Warden fouled out of the game again, but at least he played for 30 minutes this time and scored some points. Bechtel came on a bit stronger late in the game and his shots started to drop a bit more.

Of our 3 road games this season, we have scored, 60, 61 and 64 points averaging 62 a game. At home we have scored 93, 82 and 84 averaging 86 a game. Quite a difference there.

Siena (1-5) @ Navy (6-0)

Yeah, so we continue playing some great teams. This of course wont help the RPI rating any, but hopefully things will turn around with some of these teams. Siena brings back 3 starters from their 20-12 team last season that won the MEAC Conference last season and played and lost in the first round of the NCAA tourney. Siena has not performed anywhere they were expected to and from what I can tell; their schedule hasn’t been overwhelming.

The Lineup:
Rouse vs. Stevens – Advantage Navy
Konrad vs. Phan – Advantage Navy
Warden vs. Hunter – Even
Bechtel vs. Daniels – Even
Maynor vs. Richards – Even

Phan, Hunter, and Daniels are the starters from last season. Hunter is the man we need to stop as he is averaging 15 points a game. Warden will have quite a test scoring against Hunter as well, so that should be quite a good battle as long as Warden stays out of foul trouble. Rouse has the best chance of scoring in this game and will be looked to for some points in the paint. Stevens is quite a rebounding machine though, so he will have his hands full boxing him out. If Konrad shows up this game he will be looked to as well…. but who knows with him. Other than that, we will need to contain Hunter, who we might end up doubling up on to help. We will be playing the Matchup Zone D though, so we won’t worry about having Warden trying to contain him all by his lonesome.

15:07 6-11 Siena. They jump out to a 9-2 lead causing a timeout to be called by me. They are getting an offensive rebound each time they miss so far as well. That isn’t good. Warden is on the bench with his 2nd foul already.
9:50 17-15 Navy. We have a nice run there and get the lead back, mostly due to Rouse blocking everything in his range. Both teams are in the penalty right now.
4:59 30-22 Navy. Our D is shutting them down fairly well. Siena is having a hard time finding a shot, but they are getting plenty of rebounds. Our guards aren’t doing too much and the fouls are looking bad. But they are worse for Siena.
Halftime 37-34 Navy. Looks like we have a good game at home. We fell apart offensively there for the last few minutes of the half save for some free throws. We have 11 team fouls but they have 16. Both teams are shooting 42% but we are getting killed on the glass 26-17. We need to pressure them a bit more and get some turnovers and get some rebounds.

14:21 44-43 Navy. Bechtel just hits a 3 pointer to give us the lead back. Rouse has 4 of our 9 turnovers and is having problems passing the ball. Siena has beaten our press 3 times, but Binette blocked one of their shots and they missed another dunk so it hasn’t hurt us too badly yet.
I decide to change my strategy to an Inside game since their guys there have 3 fouls a piece.
10:23 56-51 Navy. Im playing Konrad at C and Ivey at PF since Rouse is having a bad day right now. Punching it on the inside and hoping we can get out of this game alive.
We have more turnovers than they do and it could catch up with us.
4:54 62-65 Siena. OH…..they hit a 3 and start to taunt us but don’t get called on a T on my own court!!!!!!!
2:59 64-71 Siena. Their back to back 3s and the fact we are having a hard time hitting a shot now has caught up with us. We have too many fouls and too many turnovers.
We call a timeout.
2:40 67-71 Siena. Maynor hits a 3.

Final 67-83 Siena. The last 4 minutes of the game we didn’t even show up.
Here were the reasons why we lost

1) Warden fouls out again and contributes 0 points.
2) We were out rebounded 49-34
3) Turnovers for us were 17 and them 13
4) Fouls for us were 23 and them 20

They only had 4 team fouls in the 2nd half. They were able to adjust and we were not. I mentioned previously that the game where we are in foul trouble and don’t cause turnovers we will get our butts handed to us…if you don’t remember…read a few posts above in my message to corbes.

We fall to 245 in the RPI. Our next game is against 3-1 Towson on their court.
Its about time we got beat cause we probably deserved to lose a game or two before and narrowly pulled the games out of our butt. Maybe we will learn something from this butt kicking.

OK, so far the season isn’t looking too bad. We are 6-1 and probably should be about 5-2 or even 4-3 but pulled some games out on the road where we were out played.

Except for the total meltdown at home in the last game we have been a different team at home and on the road. We get ready for another 2 game road trip facing off against Towson and then New Hampshire.

Our offense is nowhere near where it was last season and we are about 6 points below what we were averaging. However, our D is playing great and much better than last season…so far. We continue to play aggressive D and get our share of steals and blocks and we handle the ball well which is always a bonus. Fouls aren’t as bad as the nation average, so I guess that is a positive as well. We are shooting lights out from the field and from long range and I have nothing to complain about there at all…I hope we keep it up.

*there seems to be an error in the amount of games played…as it should say 7 instead of 6, but I think that is from the new patch and im not overly concerned about it*

I wish Warden could play some more and stay out of foul trouble as I think he could provide us with much more offense. Bechtel has an amazing shot and needs to get the ball more so he can score more as well. As a team we need to shoot better from the line…in fact we need to get to the line more often in general and get some points there.

Ivey continues to outplay Konrad and does so in less time as well. Im giving real thought to starting Ivey more not only for his offense, but for his rebounding ability also.

The 2nd half of our OOC is tougher than our 1st surprisingly as we have:

Code:
12/13/04 at Towson 12/17/04 at New Hampshire 12/20/04 St. Francis-PA 12/29/04 at Canisius 01/02/05 Youngstown State 01/05/05 Bucknell 01/09/05 at Holy Cross

4 games on the road still to play. We will need to play better on the road obviously and get our wins at home.

Overall I think this team still has some improving to do to be on par with last seasons team. We are starting 1 freshman and most likely 2 when I decide to start Ivey, so we do have room for growth.

Navy (6-1) @ Towson (3-1)

Well after our butt kicking we got we get to travel to Maryland and hope we can pull out a victory here. Towson returns 3 starters from their 12-18 squad from last year. They rank in the top 100 in scoring D at 62 points a game, steals at 8.3 and FG% at 45%. Their only loss came against a tough Temple team.

The Lineup:
Rouse vs. Pompey – Advantage Navy
Ivey vs. Freeman – Advantage Navy
Warden vs. Jung – Even
Bechtel vs. Covey – Even
Maynor vs. Vargas – Even

Pompey, Jung and Covey are the returning starters. Covey, Jung and Freeman average 14, 12, and 11 a game respectively. We will need to play some good D and contain these guys as they can dish it out to different guys at anytime. Ivey is getting the start here today again today and im hoping it turns out well for him. They have a good defense as I said, but overall Rouse is our best hope and Maynor as well on the perimeter. We cant collapse like we did last game and we need to play good on the road for once.

14:58 3-1 Navy. OH BOY. Neither team has made a shot from the field yet. All the points are from the line. Great D or lousy O…im saying lousy O.
9:56 13-3 Navy. Well we start to hit some shots from the field but Towson has only hit 1. So far the offenses still stink up the court.
4:20 22-7 Navy. Still no offense for either team really. At lease we have a bit more than they do though.
Halftime 39-14 Navy. Wow! Is that the worst offensive performance ever? At least we got on track after the miserable start we had. Towson is shooting 22% from the field though and our D is all over them. They have 7 turnovers and 5 of those are steals from us. We have 2 turnovers so far and playing pretty well. Maynor leads the way with 16 points.

14:29 52-19 Navy. The shooting woes continue for Towson and our D is playing well. We are playing pretty good on the offensive side as well. Bechtel is sitting with 4 fouls now.
6:32 60-25 Navy. We are now trying to break our own scoring D record where we held U. Cal Riverside to 39 points.

Final 83-32 Navy.

OUCH! I think if my boys ever shoot that bad I would bench each and every one of them in the next game. We shot 50% while Towson shot 24% from the field. We also out rebounded them 39-32 and caused 16 turnovers to our 3. As a team we only had 16 fouls to their 22. Maynor gets POG honors and scored as I hoped he would and took advantage of the guys guarding him. Ivey played well and got some rebounds.

Navy (7-1) @ New Hampshire (1-6)

On the road still against NH who returns only 2 starters from last seasons 15-15 team who also was 9-7 in conference play. They are in the midst of a 5 game losing streak and were beat by Towson who we just demolished. The have no top 100 ranking in any categories except for steals where they rank 75th with 8 a game.

The Lineup:
Rouse vs. Sanders – Advantage Navy
Ivey vs. Willey – Even
Warden vs. Symons – Even
Bechtel vs. Parsons – Even
Maynor vs. Kern – Even

Across the board it looks fairly close however; Rouse has a HUGE advantage over Sanders and will need to exploit that. Sanders and Willey are their returning starters which leaves the backcourt as new faces. Parsons and Kern lead the team in scoring with 13 and 10 a game so the boys will have to focus on them. Warden, Ivey and Rouse will be the guys to go to in this game. I can see Maynor having another good game as well if I decide to let him go.

18:54 2-10 NH. OH CRAP. The steal 3 passes from us and jump out and smack us in the face. Timeout Navy.
15:17 6-22 NH. WOW! They are hitting everything in their sight. The fact that they have had 4 breakaways on us from 4 steals isn’t helping much either.
9:57 15-30 NH. What a way to start. We can not get a rebound or score. They are out rebounding us 5-15 and are getting many 2nd chance buckets…sometimes 3rd chance.
4:55 25-38 NH. We are trying to battle back but keep putting them on the line where they haven’t missed a shot. If we can cut the lead to less than 10 before halftime I will be happy.
Halftime 34-42 NH. That horrible start is going to be hard to come back from. We are shooting better than them at 48% to their 42% but we are being killed on the glass at 13-24 with most of their rebounds being offensive and 2nd and 3rd chance scores. We need to stop that now. We settled down with the turnovers and got some of our own. Again though, that start just killed us. NH came out of the games on fire. We did switch up to a Man D though and that seemed to help a bit. We also double up on Parsons as he has 13 points.

17:47 43-42 Navy! What a comeback…now it’s a new game.
14:50 49-44 Navy. The Man D is working and Parsons is being held in check as well. We are getting some rebounds and it is making a huge difference.
9:59 54-51 Navy. We had a 7 point cushion but NH gets some rebounds off of our blocked shots and converts. We have blocked them 5 times in the game and they have got the ball back 4 of those times and converted.
4:39 69-55 Navy. This has turned into a completely different game. Our D has shut them down quite well since the 10-minute mark of the 1st half.

Final 81-61 Navy.

Ok, so they run out and score 30 points in the first 10 minutes and at one point had a 20 point lead on us. We held them to 31 points in the next 30 minutes and shut them down. We ended up shooting 49% to their 36% and closed the rebounding gap to 35-45 NH. We had 4 early turnovers in the first 5 minutes and only had 5 more in the rest of the game. We caused them 17 turnovers. Rouse gets POG honors and played well. As did most the team once they woke up.

*there seems to be an error in the amount of games played…as it should say 7 instead of 6, but I think that is from the new patch and im not overly concerned about it*

Maybe the computer's trying to tell you that your boys didn't show up against Siena.

St. Francis-PA (4-5) @ Navy ( 8-1)

Finally we get to play back on our court after our 2 game road trip. St. F brings back 3 starters from their 9-19 squad last season, but they seem to be playing better this year so far. They have the 40th best scoring D in the land at 61 a game along with a good shooting team and a well-disciplined team.

The Lineup:
Rouse vs. Yockey – Advantage Navy
Ivey vs. Hayes – Even
Warden vs. Hung – Even
Bechtel vs. Lewis – Even
Maynor vs. Baeza – Even

At SF and PF combined I give the edge to St. F as well as the 2 guards I give them the overall edge. Our only advantage is with Rouse where nobody has really challenged him all season. Rouse will be hopefully on his game tonight and hitting shots. Ivey will also be looked to, to exploit Hayes and his Post D. Bechtel needs to find some shots and take advantage of Lewis and his poor Perimeter D. If we can find a way to get those guys the ball and Maynor does his job then we will be fine. I don’t want another start like the last game with New Hampshire. We will go back to the Matchup Zone D again to start the game.

14:49 14-12 Navy. Both teams come out on fire hitting most everything. We however, have picked up 5 fouls to start the game and Warden and Ivey are on the bench with 2 each.
10:05 25-20 Navy. We continue to foul. Ivey, Konrad, Binette and Warden all have 2 fouls each now. That will hurt us down the stretch. St. F has no fouls at all…I think the refs have been bought off.
5:13 30-32 St. F. Fouls are just killing me. Id like to know how many points they have got off the line. They finally picked up their first foul though. Woo!

Halftime 37-43 St. F. Ok so they are out rebounding us by 2. They are shooting 50% to our 46%. They are hitting 76% of their free throws…where we have put them way too many times with our 14 team fouls. We have Ivey, Konrad with 3 fouls and Binette, Rouse, Warden all with 2. We need to get our crap together pronto or we will lose another game at home.

To start the half we double up on Baeza on the outside and Yockey on the inside and see if that will help any as they have 14 and 10 points respectively.

14:52 52-52. So far it is helping to contain Yockey but Baeza is still getting his shots and nails a 3 on us.
9:32 64-57 Navy. We seem to have them a bit on edge as they are trying to find someone else to beat us since we adjusted and doubled up on Baeza and Yockey. Hopefully we can continue to do that and play good D. Konrad and Ivey picked up their 4th so Binette is at PF. Warden needs to stay out of trouble and we will be alright on the foul situation.
5:51 75-57 Navy. That about does it. The D is playing awesome again and St. F just got frustrated and charged with a T.

Final 93-68 Navy.

We did it again. We just wear teams out and our D in the 2nd half plays awesome. 2 games now where the other team out plays us in the first half and we turn it around and come back strong. Strong character. We ended up shooting 47% to their 49% but we out rebounded them 37-31 for an 8 rebound turnaround from the first half. We also only committed 7 team fouls in the 2nd half. We caused 26 turnovers (14 were steals) and only had 12 of our own (3 in the 2nd half). Rouse was 1 rebound short of yet another double-double and Maynor wins yet another POG award with just an awesome, awesome game.

We get awhile off and don’t play til the 29th of December.

We will be playing Canisius…see above. They are undefeated and close to being a team in the top 25 in the nation. Last year they beat us on their court 82-71 for our 2nd loss of the season. Bad news is we get them again for a revenge match…on their court. I hope things play out differently. This will be a good test for our team as Canisius will be the best team we have played all season im sure.

Navy (9-1) @ Canisius (7-0)

No reason to write it but I will…this will be the toughest challenge of the year for our team. Last season we fell to these guys on their court and then we ripped off 12 straight wins. This is another revenge match and we want to make up for what happened last season. Canisius only brings back 2 starters from last seasons 15-16 squad but they seem to be better for it. They bring with them the 2nd best scoring D in the land only allowing 54 points a game. They are also the 30th ranked rebounding team (40rpg), and 39th in turnovers (12.3).

The Lineup:
Rouse vs. Raymer – Advantage Navy
Ivey vs. Brulois – Even
Warden vs. Moser – Even
Bechtel vs. Piazza – Even
Maynor vs. Cooke – Advantage Canisius

I have confidence in Maynor overall and he leads my team well but he has a challenge in this game against Cooke who leads the team averaging 16ppg. Raymer brings 13 and Piazza brings 12. Raymer is also their big rebounding machine averaging 10 a game. So he averages a double-double. That’s great! Rouse will have his hands full here. Rouse is still our man inside and will be looked to, to hold Raymer in check and score some points. Maynor has a good shot of scoring too and hopefully he will do so. We will probably end up doubling up on Cooke, but I will wait and see what he does to us. We will run the Matchup Zone D and give Rouse, Bechtel and Maynor the ball and hope for the best.

14:57 11-14 Canisius. Cooke has hit two 3 pointers, but each time he does, Bechtel answers right back with his own. We have Raymer in foul trouble with 3 while he is guarding Rouse. Rouse will be looked to even more not to bang it on the inside.
10:03 25-21 Navy. Good game going on here so far. We cause Raymer to commit his 4th foul and hopefully that will help us greatly down the stretch.
5:01 36-29 Navy. Warden misses a layup after a stolen pass that could of put us up a bit more. Other than that, we are playing well and containing Cooke who has been held scoreless since we double up on him after his 2nd 3 pointer. Raymer has been on the bench and that is helping our rebound game.
1:56 45-39 Navy. Bechtel goes down hard and sprains his ankle. He will be out for the rest of the game…. bad news indeed.

Halftime 51-43 Navy. We do alright for now w/o Bechtel. These 2 teams are in the top 10 in scoring D yet, the offenses are playing great ball and shooting well. We are at 44% while Canisius is at 46%. However, we have caused 12 turnovers to our 7 and that is helping. We need to bang in inside and get Raymer out of the game and keep shooting well and we will be fine.
15:13 58-57 Navy. We come out sluggish and Canisius comes out hot. Piazza is hot too and we double up on him as he has 17 points. However, we can not double up on Cooke as that will keep us too thin.
10:13 64-65 Canisius. Maynor gets a steal and dished it off to Kremheller (who is hot) and he misses the lay-up. That is 2 missed lay-ups now and those 4 points might bite us in the ass in this close game. Maynor has 6 assists and if the guys would hit some shots that would be much more. We call a timeout.

We are being out played this half badly. Shooting 41% now to their 49% and they are now out rebounding us 24-38. I decide I have to double up on Cooke and Piazza even with them on the floor at the same time at times.

5:35 74-77 Canisius. It is tough to beat a team that is shooting 50% and out rebounding us by 12. We are trying though w/o our SG (Bechtel) and not being that deep with big men since we are missing Jenkins.

Final 83-91 Canisius. Same thing happened last season. We just got worn out. Didn’t help that Bechtel missed most the game and we were w/o a good backup inside but every team has injuries and stupid players. It is hard to beat a team though that shoots 50% from the field and out rebounds you 35-48. I don’t care who you are. We shot 39% which was, I think, our worst shooting performance all season. Only thing that kept us in the game was that we caused 19 turnovers to our 13. We also only had 22 fouls…hahahahaha…to their 26. Cooke and Piazza killed us.

We lost to a good team no doubt. We played our hearts out but had no answer for their guards at all.

We get news that Jenkins is now eligible to play now for us.

Bechtel is day-to-day and I will decide if I will play him against Youngstown St. I will probably not.

We get an answer from our schollie offer and the answer is NO. So I will look at the guys I evaluated for my last schollie and then offer someone else some papers.

Youngstown St. (2-9) @ Navy (9-2)

So after another loss to Canisius we get to head on back home. YSU offered me a job last season…I turned it down obviously. They bring back 3 starters from last seasons 12-17 squad and another who started in 17 games. The only thing that stands out with YSU is that they are the #1 team in the land in FT. They shoot 80% from the line, and of course this sort of sucks cause we like to have games where we foul 20 or more times. So hopefully, this is not one of those nights.

The Lineup:
Rouse vs. Bridgeman – Advantage Navy
Ivey vs. Pringle – Even
Binette vs. Moore – Advantage YSU
Warden vs. Vasquez – Even
Maynor vs. Deltoro – Advantage Navy

I decide to bench Bechtel and let him heal up a bit more before playing him and risking another injury to his ankle. I need him in conference play more than this game. So, Binette will start at SF and Warden will start at SG. Moore is their main threat scoring 13 a game, so our D will need to contain him as good as possible. Vasquez adds another 12 points a game. Maynor can take advantage of Deltoro and his bad D, and Rouse will need to get some rebounds for us. Binette will also be looked to for some points.

15:02 5-8 YSU. We don’t hit our first shot until 3 minutes in. We cant get a rebound and we have some stupid turnovers. Yeah, so basically we look like….
10:03 15-14 Navy. We had a 6 point lead, but have now committed our 3rd turnover in a row. We are not holding on to the ball and handling it well this game at all and it is hurting us. Both teams are in the penalty.
5:01 22-20 Navy. Terrible shooting game by us and luckily by them so far. They have not missed a free throw, while we are 55% from the line.
Halftime 30-35 YSU. So far we look like garbage. We have 10 turnovers which is unacceptable and very rare for us to have this early in the game. We are also shooting 37% and being out rebounded. All that equals to us sucking. Rouse is the only guy who is doing much of anything with 9 points and 8 rebounds. We need to control the ball better and shoot better and we may pull this out. Im going to switch up to a Man D to start the half and see how YSU adjusts.

14:57 41-41. We come out shooting a bit better, while YSU is a bit off for now. They finally miss some free throws which made me smile.
9:52 56-50 Navy. We are in the penalty, but finally shooting better. We now know who to foul on YSU…Pringle. He is the only one who misses at the line. We are in the penalty as well and that could be important again down the stretch.
5:22 68-56 Navy. Kremheller comes in and hits back to back 3s and starts to taunt YSU. Funny kid! He is German, so I will let him slide.
Final 86-65 Navy.

We opened it up in the last 10 minutes of the game. We did what we had to do in the 2nd half and we shot better, and for the game shot 46%. We also ended up out rebounding them by 1…but it was a 3 rebound swing and it helped out. The biggest factor was that we only had 6, 2nd half turnovers for a total of 16, and YSU had a total of 27, and 16 of those came in the 2nd half. Rouse had a double-double again, and Binette got POG honors.

Maryland and Duke loom at the top.

We are now 174 in the RPI.

We get our former conference nemesis Bucknell in a few days at home. I look forward to that battle. They are 8-3 and continue to play well.

Bechtel should be ready for that game.

Bucknell (8-3) @ Navy (10-2)

Bechtel is Back!

My boy is back and we will need his shot in this game. You all are pretty familiar with Bucknell, as are my guys. Last season we were 1-2 against these guys and they knocked us out of a conference tournament championship. Bucknell brings back 1 full time starter from last year and another who started 9 games as well. They have a good scoring D ranked 57th in the nation giving up only 63 a game and they are the 28th ranked rebounding team in the land with 40 a game. So we need to score and keep them off the glass….typical stuff really.

The Lineup:
Rouse vs. McIlwain – Advantage Navy
Ivey vs. Bingaman – Advantage Bucknell
Warden vs. List – Advantage Navy
Bechtel vs. Redford – Advantage Navy
Maynor vs. Hinshaw – Advantage Navy

Bucknell lost a starter in Moody who has a bulging disk and will miss this game. He was their 2nd leading scorer averaging 12.6 a game. But Bingaman is back and he brings with him 13.8 a game and 8.8 rebounds a game. Rouse will be on him and most likely we will be doubling up on him throughout the game. McIlwain also brings 8 rebounds with him and also 7.5 points. Ivey is my main concern here, but I won’t start Konrad in his place. Rouse, Warden and Bechtel will be looked to for points. Rouse will need to box some guys out and get the boards as Ivey will need to do that as well. Maynor needs to dish some good passes out. We will be playing a Matchup Zone again…but that might change and go to a Man D so Rouse can contain Bingaman better if needed.

14:53 11-11. There is no love lost between us at all as both teams combine for 9 fouls. Luckily we have only 3 of those. Bucknell is playing a 3-2 zone and that has allowed Ivey to score 7 points so far.
9:56 22-16 Navy. Both teams are shooting poorly at around 30%. Bechtel is still a little sore on his ankle and it is showing as he is a bit tentative moving with the ball and finding his own shot. We have Bingaman in foul trouble as he picks up his 4th.
5:06 41-27 Navy. Ivey is killing them. He has 21 points and 7 rebounds already. Maynor has 6 assists. Everyone is doing their job well.
Halftime 55-43 Navy. Defense is lacking, but that is ok for now. Ivey picked up another rebound to end the half and already has a double-double. Our lead is only 12, and im not that comfortable with it to be honest. We are beating them in every category but they are only 12 down. Too many fouls in the 1st half with both teams picking up 15. We hate each other.

14:36 63-50 Navy. Binette, who is an 83% FT shooter gets fouled and a T is called on Bucknell. Binette misses 3 of 4 on the line….ouch! Other than that, we are doing alright.
Bucknell finally switches up to a 2-3 zone.
10:03 76-62 Navy. Maynor just gets his 10th assist giving it to Ivey for his 26th point.
4:15 92-70 Navy. We finally pull away from them. We have been out playing them everywhere else, but the score was too close for comfort until now.

Final 106-80

Terrific game and I think maybe the first game where we won on every category in the game. We shot 54% to their 46%, we out rebounded them 50-37, shot 68% from the line on 30-44 shooting to their 51% on 18-35 shooting. 4-12 from long range to their 2-10. 29 assists to their 17. 6 steals to their 4, 9 blocks to their 1 and only 10 turnovers to their 15. Ivey wins POG…check it out.

So if there was any question as to who should be starting at PF for us, I think they have been answered. Ivey plays well and gives up points and rebounds. He moved into the 2nd spot in the record books for points in a game, behind Valley and his 39 points last season, 2 years ago. The kid only missed 2 shots from the field and 3 free throws. Rouse had yet another double-double. Maynor didn’t score, but did the job of a PG and dished it out to Rouse and Ivey all game long. Great game.

We get Holy Cross on their court and then we finally step into conference play against last season Ivy League Champ, Princeton.

Navy (11-2) @ Holy Cross (4-9)

This game winds up our OOC schedule and we will do it against a very familiar team who we played 3 times last season, winning 2 and dropping 1. HC probably has one of the better scoring offenses we have faced in a while averaging 72 a game and ranked 86th, however, they have one of the worst scoring defenses giving up 76 a game and being ranked 323rd. They do however, control the ball well and rank 29th, only having 12 turnovers a game, and they also shoot 71% from the charity stripe. Only 2 starters return from last seasons 15-15 team.

The Lineup:
Rouse vs. Beem – Advantage Navy
Ivey vs. Clegg – Advantage Holy Cross
Warden vs. Luevano – Even
Bechtel vs. Warrington – Even
Maynor vs. Jacobs – Even

Beem and Jacobs return from last season but Jacobs is the scorer of the 2 averaging 10 a game. However, Warrington is their main threat with the ball scoring 12 a game in 22 minutes of play. Our guys will need to keep him in check and he needs to be on the bench as much as possible. Their defense is lacking and if we can take good shots and Maynor dishes it out again as good as he did last game and pretty much all season we will be fine. Im a bit concerned with their offense, but it looks as though I can run it down their throat and they will get tired as they do a lot of subbing. Bechtel, Warden and Ivey will be the key guys this game and we will use the balanced attack.

14:54 12-9 Navy. Both teams come out hot, but have since settle down a bit. We both play up tempo games, so this should be interesting.
9:53 25-15 Navy. Our D shuts HC down some in the last 5 minutes. We are having some troubles finding a good shot, but so far…so good. Ivey is off this game, but he has 6 of our 14 rebounds.
4:56 42-29 Navy. Our offense is doing well, and so is our D. On the line, my boys are shooting 93%….im in shock!
Halftime 53-41 Navy. Lots of offense, and not a load of defense. We are shooting nicely all over the court, rebounding well, and handling the ball well. We will need to play some D though and keep on playing good offense and we will pull this game out on the road.

15:09 58-59 HC. We come out not able to hit anything. I don’t know why exactly, but it needs to stop. HC is on a roll and we call another timeout to try and settle things down.
9:59 73-69 Navy. Crap! We pulled back in front by 10, but have committed 3 straight turnovers to let HC back in the game.
4:49 90-77 Navy. They got within 1 and then we turned it around again and pull back away. Warden went on a scoring run with 3 straight buckets and we caused some more turnovers.

Final 99-83 Navy. This was a game of spurts. Luckily, we had the biggest spurt at the longest time and pulled away from these guys and got the win. We ended up shooting 47% to their 43% and having 41 rebounds to their 42. Our 14 turnovers to their 19 helped us quite a bit, especially down the stretch and gave us some easy buckets. 33-42 from the line was impressive as well, as we are not that much of a threat from the line, but in this game and the last, we have done quite well. Ivey gets a double-double, we have 6 players score in double figures. Bechtel gets POG, although I think Warden probably played the best overall with his points, rebounds, and assists.

2004/2005 Ivy League Conference Predictions

Well I am excited about starting play in my new conference this year and I take a moment to finally check out my conference opponents and look at what the media has to say about them.

First the Media Predictions:

All-Conference Team
C: Gary Rouse – Navy
PF: Wilfred Schreiber – Penn
SF: Pierre Pelfrey – Princeton
SG: Charles Swallow – Harvard
PG: Barrett Hornsby- Princeton

2nd Team
C: Richard Glover – Penn
PF: Leandro Witham – Dartmouth
SF: Byron Martinez – Dartmouth
SG: Matthew Tinney – Princeton
PG: Nelson Carter – Brown

Conference Predictions
1) Princeton
2) Penn
3) Navy
4) Brown
5) Harvard
6) Columbia
7) Yale
8) Dartmouth

OK, so the media picks us to come in 3rd, which is fine. I evaluated each team and chose my own predictions. Here goes:

1) Navy. Yeah im biased! We only bring back 1 starter from last season’s team who is currently starting on our squad now, but our bench provides us with 33.3 points a game and we average 82 a game while giving up only 63. We have a current RPI of 149.
2) Princeton. They bring back 3 starters from last season’s conference championship team (10-4 in conference play) Their bench scores 15.3 a game while the team scores 69 and gives up 66 a game. Current RPI is 151.
3) Penn. Penn brings back 2 starters from last season’s 2nd place 10-4 conference team. Their bench provides 21.5 points while the team scores 62 a game and gives up 63. They have a current RPI of 173.
4) Brown. These guys bring back 2 starters from last seasons 8-6 conference squad. Their bench scores 20.7 a game while the team scores 65 and gives up 70. Current RPI is the highest in the conference as of now at 136.
5) Harvard. Brings back 3 starters from last years 9-5 conference team. The bench scores 16.6 a game while the team scores 61 and gives up only 56 a game. Their RPI is 191.
6) Dartmouth. They only bring back 2 starters from last seasons 5-9 conference finish. The bench provides 19.4 a game while the teams scores 59 and gives up 61. They have a current RPI of 183.
7) Yale. Brings back 3 starters from last years finish at 8-6. The bench gives them 26.2 a game while the team scores 60 and gives up 68. They have an RPI of 219.
8) Columbia. They round out the conference and bring back 3 starters from their 5-9 squad last year. The bench gives them 25.7 a game but the team only scores 59 while giving up 75. They have an RPI of 168.

So there you have it. I know im biased, but I like my team and I think we can compete in our new conference. Princeton is awesome and Penn is quite good as well, and it should be quite a battle between those two teams and us. I don’t see much that separates Princeton and us at all. In fact, I rate Princeton and Penn as having better starters than us, but I gave us the nod on the intangibles and the all around play, especially from our bench. It should be interesting and im ready to see what we can do right off the bat against Princeton.

Princeton (6-7, 0-0) @ Navy (12-2, 0-0)

No better way to start conference play than to play the champion from last season right? I might be thinking differently at the end of the game. Princeton is actually pretty average across the board except for their good free throw rating. They rank 16th in the country at 74.7%. They bring 3 guys back from last year’s team and they are pretty good.

The Lineup:
Rouse vs. Eckstein – Advantage Navy
Ivey vs. Gilliam – Advantage Princeton
Warden vs. Pelfrey – Advantage Princeton
Bechtel vs. Tinney – Advantage Princeton
Maynor vs. Hornsby – Advantage Princeton

Remember I had said I gave the edge overall to their starters? They have a good team, but im hoping the rest of my team plays better. We match up well at PF an SF fairly well, so hopefully we can hold our own…plus we are at home. Pelfrey is the man though and averages 20 points a game Hornsby brings 12 a game with him. Eckstein and Gilliam bring 9 and 7 rebounds respectively. We are going to try and exploit Pelfrey and his lackluster defense as well as Gilliam and Tinney. So Bechtel, Ivey and Warden will need to be playing well. Rouse will be looked for, for his defense and blocks and just his ability in the paint.

14:50 9-11 Princeton. We get introduced with Princeton opening up with 6 straight points. All of their points are from Pelfrey (7) and Hornsby (4). I double up on Pelfrey after his 3rd bucket.
9:52 20-21 Princeton. Been a tight game so far and interesting. We are in the penalty though, and im not liking that as Princeton is a good foul shooting team and I don’t need them getting free points.
4:52 29-35 Princeton. They are shooting 61% and im unable to stop them. We are shooting a miserable 35%.
Halftime 44-51 Princeton. They scored almost as much as they do in a whole game. Well, I would hope so, since they are shooting lights out at 56%. We are even in rebounds at 23, but we are shooting terribly at 37%. Not much better on the line either at 62%. We need to maybe, play some defense and shoot better and we will be lucky to win.

14:48 50-58 Princeton. We continue to let them shoot on us and aren’t making any head way at all. Hornsby is killing me with 18 and Pelfrey has 14 of his own. Ivey and Warden both have 4 fouls and are sitting.
8:57 57-58 Princeton. We are fighting back but Princeton is getting the rebound on almost every missed shot of their lately for the last 5 minutes. We need to box out.
4:20 59-66 Princeton. All that work for nothing. They are out rebounding us by 10 this half and I swear all of those are on their offensive end and they are getting 2nd and 3rd scoring chances and that is why we are losing.

Final 62-69 Princeton

All I can say is this…We shot 32% to their 48% and were out rebounded 44-33. It was even on the rebounding side of things until the last 10 minutes when they started to get every missed shot of theirs. If we could of just shot our season average, we would of won this game. We handled the ball well, only having 7 turnovers and causing 13, but the bottom line was we couldn’t shoot and we fell apart rebounding in the last 10 minutes of the game.

Navy (12-3, 0-1) @ Columbia (5-8, 1-0)

On the road for the first time in conference play and I am hoping for a better result. Columbia brings back 3 starters from a 5-9 squad last year, their C, PF, and SF all return. They don’t rank high in any one category and the only thing they are in the top 100 in is team turnovers where they lose the ball 13 times a game.

The Lineup:
Rouse vs. Christian – Advantage Navy
Ivey vs. Aviles – Advantage Columbia
Warden vs. Bolding – Even
Bechtel vs. Pounds – Advantage Navy
Maynor vs. Looney – Advantage Navy

Christian is perhaps the 3rd best Center in the conference and averages 9.5 points and 8.2 rebounds a game. Columbia doesn’t have a great defense, at least from what I can tell. Maynor will be looked for, for points as will Bechtel and Rouse. We need to shoot better than last game and things will be different. Id like to get our first conference win tonight.

14:46 12-12. We are picking up stupid nit picking fouls again in the last couple minutes. Warden is doing the assist job while Rouse is scoring pretty much at will when he gets the ball. All of our points have been assisted, so we are moving the ball around well.
8:35 24-18 Navy.We finally have a little lead. We are handling the ball very well, with no turnovers, but we have some stupid fouls and Konrad and Ivey both have 2 and are sitting.
3:49 28-29 Columbia. The refs continue to take us out of the game by calling stupid fouls and then technicals. We are shooting like crap again for the 2nd game and the tempo is being controlled by them so far.
Halftime 34-38 Columbia. We are not getting greeted very well in this conference at all. We continue to shoot like crap! 37% from the field to their 48%. All season long we have shot well and held other teams to low percentages, but so far in conference play we have it being handed to us. I didn’t think we were this bad. Im pissed!

14:42 40-41 Columbia. I am about to pull my starters cause none of them want to play or rebound.

We just get slapped with yet another T!!!!!

9:51 52-49 Navy. I am still one pissed off coach. You would be too if your team wasn’t performing like they have all season long for the last 2 games.
7:41 52-56 Columbia. What was a 5 point lead yet again disappears and we trail again. WE SUCK.
3:26 61-62 Columbia. Warden travels on 2 straight possessions and we keep squandering any opportunity we have to get the lead.
Final 67-77 Columbia.

I have nothing to say really.

Ill post it just cause I have to…

Well as of now I am getting the impression that we don’t belong in this conference at all. If we would of just shot what we did most the season, we would of won both the Princeton game and this game here tonight. So far, our guys have just completely forgot how to shoot a ball. We were out played by these guys and couldn’t even score what Columbia allows per game! I know we played some cup cakes during the OOC, but man, this little 2 game shooting spree has to stop and we need to play like we should and can. We tested our team now against who I felt was the best team in the conference other than us in Princeton and just not against who I felt was the worst team in the conference and have been handed a defeat in both. Tough times lay ahead…
