I like the recruiting limitation, and I remember running my Arkansas State Indian dynasty in a somewhat similar fashion.
However, I'm thinking what I'd do if I had to do it all over again is institute a mile marker. For example, I won't travel 500 miles from campus to visit a recruit. Anything under 500 goes. I don't know, something I've thought a bit about as my dynasty comes to a close and in what direction I want to go from there.

Interesting - I think I'll have to see how to work that. Thanks for the input.
I would like the ability to grow the period over time but I'm not sure what the fairest/most challenging way to do it is. I'm also going to impose academic standards (I forgot to add this) -Recruits must meet these standards: a 3.0 or better GPA test score of 1000 or better play for a school with an academic rating of 50 or better

Growing would say, include another 100 miles to the radius. That's how I'd shoot it. Adding a state adds a lot of real estate, and may be too big of an increase in possible recruits. At least, that's how I'd look at it.
Since you're starting small, I'd work small.

Reno, NV - University of Nevada officials have called a press conference to announce the hiring Michael James as their new football coach. The AD believes that coach James' high flying single back spread offense will at least draw some interest in the games, attendance averages just about 17,100 people per game and the athletic department wants to bring the budget out of the red. Coach James Quotes: "I am a big believer in fundamentals. We are going to spread out the field but we will be sound in our approach. We will rely on a running game, but we are going to attack the whole field with our offense. We won't try to out-scheme our opponents, but we will try to work harder and execute better than them. Defensively, we are going to mix it up a lot. I believe in putting a lot of pressure on the opposing quarterback, but not in a way that exposes you to the big play. I like to attack on defense, and I believe in dictating the game as opposed to waiting for an opponent bringing it to you. We have high expectations of ourself, and our fans should have high expecatations of us. Our goal is to win championships."

a very tough road game week 2. Play well and the team could string together a good season. Play horribly and the season goes down the tubes. It'll be interesting to see how you fare...

Nevada offensive preview
The move to a single back offense has been discussed quite a bit, but everyone is wondering how the team will make transition to a wide open offense from a power-I formation. There will probably be a lot of up and down play on offense this year. Position Preview: Quarterback (WO = Walk On, RS = has used redshirt season) Code:
Outlook: In all honesty none of these guys is the future. The best coach James can do is get somebody out there to not kill the team and hope to land a spread QB in this years recruiting class. Husted and Jefferson are walk-ons who won't get much playing time barring injury. Prediction: Kerr will probably keep the starting spot warm this year. Position Preview: Running Backs RB: (WO = Walk On, RS = has used redshirt season) Code:
FB: Code:
Outlook: Having run the Power-I, there are plenty of bodies at the running back position. The real question is which one will feel the most at home in the single back formation. The new coaching staff really wants a taller (5'10"-6'1") kid who runs well between the tackles, has good hands, and a new emphasis will be placed on pass blocking ability. Kirk Shoreman is one of the most talented players on the team, but may have trouble fitting into the new offensive system. The staff would like to carry two scholarship fullbacks, so they are set for now after moving Peter Sanderson to outside linebacker. Prediction: Shoreman will lock down the spot, and the real battle will be for 2nd string. Position Preview: Tight Ends (WO = Walk On, RS = has used redshirt season) Code:
Outlook: It's strange to see so many jumbo recievers playing tight end at a Power-I school. One of the true seniors will be redshirted. Oddly enough, the new staff would like to get a little more brawn at this spot and will try to find a guy who can pass block and be a threat in the secondary. Prediction: Pyatt will probably get the job but expect Rayburn to get some touches. Barnes will redshirt. Position Preview: Recievers (WO = Walk On, RS = has used redshirt season) Code:
Outlook: The WR position is going to change drastically over the next couple of years. Right now there are 5 recievers on scholarship, and that number will probably jump to 7-8 in most years. The coaches like the more physical, taller recievers but like to mix things up by putting a speed guy on the field. Martinez will start at one spot, the real question is if Jerry Williams will be allowed to redshirt. Probably not. Prediction: Martinez, Baumgardner, and Williams will start. Martinez currently rates the highest of the recievers, but the staff thinks that with plenty of reps that Williams can be a real solid player. Position Preview: Offensive Line Center: (WO = Walk On, RS = has used redshirt season) Code:
Guard: Code:
Tackle: Code:
Outlook: The offensive line might have the most talented starting group of any offensive unit, but there is absolutely no depth. The new coaching staff would like to carry at least a 2-deep at every OL spot while also reshirting incoming at least freshman. Prediction: The starting lineup will be LT-Hancock LG-Klein C-Lowman RG-Kurko RT-Severson. Yes, you saw that correctly. The staff wants to place their best 5 on the field and Severson fits the bill. The coaches might give Branton a chance early, but don't be surprised if you see Severson in that starting 5 if Branton struggles. Position Preview: Specialists RS Soph punter Bo DeMeester and SR kicker Percy Pigeon have their spots locked down.

In all honesty, Oregon is by far the better team. We are definitely going to play to win and upsets happen. I'm not much of a moral victory type, but I'm just hoping we don't get slaughtered in Eugene.

Position Preview: Defensive Line
DE: (WO = Walk On, RS = has used redshirt season) Code:
DT: Code:
Outlook: There is good talent in the trenches, and the name to know here is Ralph Lindstrom. Lindstrom is really raw, but he will probably log plenty of time over the next few years if he puts the work in during the offseason. The coaches rely on a lot of 3-4 style looks, and they prefer their DE's to be a little more brawny than the defensive ends in your typical 4-3 look. Coffey is excellent, and is the best current player in the front 4. At DT, Kosters is a project like Lindstrom. The potential is there, but it will take a lot of hard work and determination to see it realized. Opinion: LE - Huntley, DT - Swann, RE - Coffey. Position Preview: Linebackers ILB: (WO = Walk On, RS = has used redshirt season) Code:
OLB: Code:
Outlook: not very good. Sanderson could wind up being the best of the bunch, and he was just moved here from fullback. Prediction: You won't remember these guys in a year or two. Sauls has a chance to be decent. Position Preview: Secondary CB: (WO = Walk On, RS = has used redshirt season) Code:
S: Code:
Outlook: The new staff likes taller DB's, so while Vogel is the best CB on the team there is a good chance the coaches will be recruiting taller cornerbacks to replace him. Kochansky will probably be the start and best safety on the roster by mid-season. Prediction: pain. Vogel and Kochansky can wind up being a decent player with some hard work.

Recruiting needs:
the biggest need is QBOTF. The staff will try to identify a few targest at QB and go after them immediately. Wolf Pack coaches would also like to sign a tight end, two wide recievers, a center, guard, and tackle. Defensively the coaches will go after linebackers and defensive backs first, but will try to find some depth at DT and DE. There are over 16 ships available, expect a full class. In-state recruiting is okay this year, it will be interesting to see if Nevada can make a dent with local superstar offensive tackle Winston Azumah, who is the early favorite to be the top rated recruit in the nation according to recruiting site Rivals.com. Azumah attends Reno Wooster high school, literally around the corner from the Nevada campus. Other in-state targets will include OLB Dusty Stamm and C Cary Welch. This staff has made it known it will recruit california quite heavily, and in particular the Las Angeles area. Week 1 Nevada vs. Ball State Recruiting Update: As Nevada begins a new season, the staff has hit the street and hasn't been bashful about going after big time prospects. It helps when you can leave your office, take a 10 minute walk, and see the top rated overall recruit in the nation. But will the coaches be able to make an impact with Winston Azumah? In a recent interview with a Rivals 100 reporter, Azumah had this to say about Nevada's chances: "Nah man, I don't really see myself going there. The Nevada coaches dropped by and offered me a scholarship yesterday, and seem nice and all, but I want to play for championships. I'm not even sure I'll take a visit there. We'll see." So, it appears the Wolf Pack coaches will have to work really hard just to get Azumah to visit. The Wolf Pack don't seem to be doing much better with Overton, Nevada (Moapa Valley HS) talent Dusty Stamm. Stamm was another kid who recieved an early offer from Nevada, but he also indicated he would look elsewhere. The coaches also scouted Rivals.com's choice for the #3 player in state, Fernley's center Cary Welch, but surprisngly decided not to offer. Nevada has also scouted Las Vegas (Cheyenne HS) safety Luther Martin, and Reno (Hug HS) quarterback Ron Wittich. The coaches asked both players to visit, but have not offered either a scholarship yet. The coaching staff promised they would hit california hard, and it looks like they are telling the truth. The real surprise came in their first scholarship offer - a punter. The staff thinks Punting is important, but didn't expect to offer a punter this season. That chanced when they saw film of Modesto (Fred C. Beyer HS) punter Lionel Burnett. Lionel isn't even on the radar screen as far as recruits go, landing at #943 on the national 100 list, and doesn't even grade in the top 100 in California. The staff was blown away by his leg strength though, Lionel is averaging almost 48 yards per punt this year. The next to recieve an offer in California was Riverside (Arlington HS) guard Marcus Poteet. Poteet rates at #348 nationally, and at #46 in the state of california. Westwood, California (Westwood HS) linebacker Kurt Ellison hasn't met the Nevada coaches yet, has recieved a phone call. "Yea, they called. They offered me on the phone and said that a written offer was going to be fed-ex'd this week" said Ellison. "I don't know much about Nevada, but I know it's close. I'll have to check it out. The coaches said that they really needed help at linebacker and that if I went there and worked hard that I could get on the field right away. I'll have to learn more about them." Coaches also called with a verbal offer to Alta Loma (Rancho Cucamonga HS) cornerback Richard Alcott. Alcott is listed at #865 on the Rivals national list, but doesn't show up on the Rivals California top 100. It is obvious that Nevadas coaches consider QB a top priority, even though no offer has been extended to a QB yet. According to sources in the Nevada athletic department, Coaches have visited or contacted eight different QB prospects this week alone. They will probably put in a few more visits and watch some of the quarterback prospects in person before deciding to offer, but if they don't find anyone that stands out they could offer local prepster Wittich and make him the top target at QB.

Scouting Ball State
Ball State is a good early matchup for the Nevada Wolf Pack. Most consider the talent level on the rosters to be about the same, and both hover around the 100 spot on the coaches and fans polls. Ball state runs a pro formation, and the guy that makes it go is running back Troy Joel. Joel has two good linemen to run behind, center Bryant Farley and Tackle Darrin Caraballo. The staff believes in stopping the run first, so it will be a good test for them early. The coaches think that Ball State can be attacked defensively running the ball, so they will try to hit some runs between the tackles. Around the Nation: Code:

Game Action
1st Quarter: Both teams come out and make a lot of mistakes, committing costly offensive penalties that prevent either offense from moving effectively. The Wolf Pack compound that by turning the ball over when after a 10 yard pass from Michael Kerr to tight end Glen Pyatt, ball state defender Gino fredrickson strips the ball and recovers it at midfield. This doesn't immediately turn into points, but after punting the ball and forcing a three and out by the Nevada offense - assisted by costly offensive pass intereference and a holding calls - Ball State gets the ball back with a short field and scores on the first play, a 31 yard pass from Danny Kok to Jared Wolfe. 1st Quarter 03:12 remaining Ball State 7 Nevada 0 Nevada takes the kickoff, and strings together a couple of first downs on a nice looking drive until they stall at the Ball State 31 yard line. The coaches decide to go for it on fourth down and Kerr tosses a beautiful 31 yard strike to Jerry Williams for the TD. 2nd Quarter 10:23 remaining Ball State 7 Nevada 7 Ball State takes the kickoff and strings together 3 first downs on 3 consecutive plays, but the scoring threat is quenched by a Clay Kochansky interception at the Nevada 22. Neither team can do much offensively before the gun sounds. Halftime Ball State 7 Nevada 7 Analysis: you wouldn't know it by the 16 yards on the stat sheet, but Nevada has had some nice run plays. The total is skewed by 3 sacks. Nevada's defense has performed well, the lone Ball State score was hard to stop after they had a very short field to work with. Stats: Ball State First Downs: 6 Rushing: 50 yards Passing: 48 yards Nevada First Downs: 7 Rushing Yards: 16 Passing Yards: 154 Third Quarter Both defenses open by forcing a three-and-out from the opposing offense. Nevada's defense then ups the ante on the ensuing possession by absolutely destroying a Ball State screen play. Sisk reads the play beautifully and after Ball State quarterback Kok finds his running back Norbert Caldwell 5 yards behind the line of scrimmage, Ray Sisk destroys Caldwell and forces a fumble that cornerback Lionel Morton recovers at midfield. Nevada's offense take advantage of the short field and Wayne Compton totes the ball into the end zone from the five yard line on a well blocked trap play. 3rd Quarter 07:15 remaining Nevada 14 Ball State 7 Ball State takes the kickoff and marches to midfield, but it's apparent that Ball State QB Kok is pressing things and an ill-advised pass into double coverage is picked off by Nevada safety Hunter Sporzynski at the Nevada 42 and returned 48 yards for the touchdown. 3rd Quarter 03:38 remaining Nevada 21 Ball State 7 Ball state drives down to the 22 yard line but settle for a field goal on fourth down. The Ball State drive was assisted by two big penalties by Nevada, a defensive pass intereference on first and 20, and a roughing the kicker call on fourth and seven. 4th Quarter 13:43 remaining Nevada 21 Ball State 10 Ball State gets the ball with a short field after a Nevada 21 yard punt, but Nevada's defense stiffens and on a fourth down Nevada defensive tackle [BPhillip Vaughn[/b] blows through the line and drops Kok for a 5 yard loss. Nevada moves the ball to midfiend but plays it safe with a run on third and long, and Bo DeMeester sends a beautiful punt down that pins Ball State inside the 10. Ball State's offense is taken completely off track by the Nevada defense, and after a short Ball State Punt the Wolf Pack capitalize on field position and score on a 28 yards pass from Kerr to Williams. 4th QUarter 03:55 remaining Nevada 28 Ball State 10 Ball State drives down on two big bomb plays, but after marching all the way to the 13 they mysteriously settle for a field goal. 4th Quarter 02:39 Nevada 28 Ball State 13 Nevada drives down to the 20 and starts falling on the ball. Final Nevada 28 Ball State 13 Player of the Game: Nevada wide reciever Jerry Williams with seven catches for 137 yards and two TD's.

Analysis:
Nevada's opening win was keyed by a solid defense and sound offense. Kerr performed admirably, posting two touchdowns against no interceptions. Compton's contribution off the bench was a nice surprise. Coaches comments: It's great to win out of the gate, and it's nice to see that the team played a nice, solid game. I would like to see us toughen up against the run a bit more, I don't like giving up 100 yards on the ground. Jimmy Williams really stepped it up today and had a nice game, and the guy throwing the ball deserves a lot of credit. I know if you look on the stat sheet that we only had one sack, but I thought the guys up front did a nice job of keeping their quarterback under pressure. It seemed like Coffey was around him a lot (5 QB pressures) and huntley (2 QB pressures) had some nice presence as well. Injuries: Code:

Week 2
at #17 Oregon (TV5) Email: none Recruiting Update: The search for a QB continues and it appears that the coaches like QB Ron Wittich enough to offer him a scholarship. Wittich has thrown for 649 yards and 3 TD's against no picks in five games this year. The coaches are considering taking two QB's this year, but to this point Wittich is the only offer at QB. Running back isn't a big priority this year, but the staff will offer a couple of kids they really like and it would be a bonus to sign any of them. One of those running backs is Jon Glenn of Cerritos, California (Cerritos HS) has an offer from Nevada. Glenn, Rivals.com's 51st rated running back, has rushed for 716 yards and 10 TD's on 128 carries to go with 24 catches for 367 yards and another 3 TD's. Glenn currently is sporting a perfect 4.0 GPA. The staff went to visit cornerback Ricardo Alcott, who already has a Nevada offer. The staff was very impressed with the ballhawking cornerback, who has posted 6 picks, 3.5 sacks, and 29 tackles on the season. They also payed a visit to outside linebacker Kurt Ellison, who already has a Nevada offer. The visit went well, and Nevada coaches like their chances with the 6'3" Westwood linebacker. The staff started looking at targets to man either inside linebacker position, and the first offer has been extended to Kennedy Idone. Idone attends Quincy HS in Quincy, CA, and his well rounded game impressed the Nevada coaches. Another defensive player recieving an offer this week is 5'11" safety Kent Joslin, of Riverside, California (John W. North HS). Kent is a fantastic tackler and has the hard nosed attitude the coaches really want to bring to the team. It is being reported that Nevada coaches stopped by Monta Vista HS in Cupertino, California to visit defensive tackle Jonathan Reeder. Reeder is looking to stay close to home, so Nevada should get some serious consideration from the 6'4" defensive tackle. Reeder has been contacted by a few different schools, but Utah State is the only other school to have offered at this point. The coaches being aggressive in trying to sign a good defensive class by using their last visit to stop in to Los Altos HS in Los Altos, California to extend and offer to defensive end Jermone Masiona. Jerome has the build the coaches really like, standing 6'6" and weighing in at 241 lbs. Masiona rates a #55 in the state of california, and #402 nationally. He's posted 43 tackles and 6.5 sacks in five games this season. The coaches spent a lot of time in the film room scouting players, and the result is an offer being extended to 6'3" 219 lb. tight end Oscar Horner from Santa Clara, california. Horner is one of many "sleeper" recruits that Nevada will look at this year. Listed at #959 on the Rivals national 1000, Horner sports a 4.0 GPA and has hauled in 23 catches for 314 yards and a TD. Offensive tackle Claude Peterson is another player who recieved a scholarship offer after some film review. Peterson is 6'5" and a bit undersized at 256, but could easily put on pounds and fit in well as a tackle in Nevada's offense. Peterson is listed at #508 on the Rivals 1000, and Nevada is the first school to offer.

Scouting Oregon:
Oregon (1-0, #17) could be the most talented team the Wolf Pack will face this season. Defensive tackle Chuck Maloney will contend for all-american honors this year, and behind him are a couple of gifted players in linebacker Gary Horn and safety Mickey Alto. Maloney grades out at 94, while Horn and Alto grade out at 88 and 82, respectively. It doesn't end with those three, either. Oregon runs a one-back offense very much like Nevada, and quarterback Raymond Welshans was very efficient in Oregon's first game hitting 16 passes on 24 attempts for 4 TD's and 2 INT's, a 48-22 win at Mississippi State. Game Action:
1st Quarter Oregon's offense sputters after making it to midfield on two drives, but their defense opens in a dominating fashion, shutting down the Nevada offense. More problems arise for Oregon as a deep Raymond Welshans pass is picked off at the Nevada 23 by cornerback Lionel Morton, who returns the ball 32 yards to just past midfield. After moving the ball 10 yards, Oregon's defense returns the favor as cornerback Roy Banks picks off a Michael Kerr pass at the Oregon 22 and returns it 13 yards. Oregon's offense breaks out of their funk and they march down to the 4 yard line where Welshans takes a QB draw into the end zone for the TD. 1st Quarter 00:51 Oregon 7 Nevada 0 After Nevada gets the ball at the 20, Oregon's defense takes over and causes 2 sacks in 3 plays. Oregon's offense again takes advantage of a short field on an 8 yard QB draw that looked exactly like the last touchdown. 2nd Quarter 10:40 Oregon 14 Nevada 0 A promising Nevada drive stalls at midfield after another Oregon sack, and Oregon's offense is hitting stride as they go in for another score. 2nd Quarter 04:12 Oregon 21 Nevada 0 Halftime Oregon 21 Nevada 0 Analysis: Oregon's offense took a while to get untracked, but now with the short field they keep getting it's looking like they have it in overdrive. Nevada's defense is playing relatively well, but the Wolf Pack offense keeps putting the Wolf Pack offense in bad situations. Nevada's only got 5 first downs and 44 total yards, that's just not going to cut it. 3rd quarter: Nevada opens with another 3 and out, moving back 5 yards. oregon starts with the short field, but a Nevada safety Ray Lyle comes up big with a stripped ball that Ernie Anthony falls on at the 17 yard line, preventing what would probably be more points for Oregon. Nevada moves the ball down to the 25 yard line before they are forced to settle for a Percy Pigeon 42 yard field goal that splits the uprights. 3rd Quarter 11:29 Oregon 21 Nevada 3 Oregon answers with a 79 yard drive in only five plays. 3rd Quarter 08:15 Oregon 28 Nevada 3 three and out for Nevada, Oregon scores again. 3rd Quarter 04:36 Oregon 35 Nevada 3 three and out. Oregon scores with ease. 3rd Quarter 00:21 Oregon 42 Nevada 3 the RUTS is on. Final Oregon 45 Nevada 3
