what does "pwned" mean?

I play a lot of online games, and often see "pwned" when someone kicks ass.

I assumed it meant "owned", but i'm not 100% sure -- what exactly does this mean?

It means "pawned". It's a super-secret chess-tech term.

I always thought it meant "owned" but with a misspelling, since "p" is next to "o" on a keyboard... kind of like "teh" instead of "the."

Long story, here's where I heard it originated from. Since people are so ub3r-1337 they try to type owned as fast as possible, well since o is next to p, many people kept misspelling it because everyone is so ub34-1337, and here we are, now whenever it's not just a regular own, it's pwn.

Originated in an online game called Warcraft, where a map designer misspelled "owned." When the computer beat a player, it was supposed to say, so-and-so "has been owned." Instead, it said, so-and-so "has been pwned." It basically means "to own" or to be dominated by an opponent or situation.

I think it means that the people that use it need to get out a bit more often.

And here I am punching people in the butt to show ownership. All I have to say is pwned. That would have saved me a lot of trouble.

from what i hear, there was a popular quake mod that had "you've been pwned" every time you died, it was an honest typo but it caught on

I learned a similar lesson with chickens. When I was 6 or so I went to my great grandmothers farm and she had a lot of chickens and one rooster. I thought it'd be fun to chase the chickens the rooster however didn't see this as fun.

You're slipping, MC. I was expecting a picture of a swan to be waiting there for me like you used to do with the closet girl...

I started a pretty funny thread i guess...

Well it sounds like it might be a bit of an urban myth as to the origin of it: i've heard Warcraft, CS, other geeky stuff etc.

Someone could probably find out the true answer with a little research, but i'm far too lazy...

Because you didnt take time to think about what I actually typed before you had a come back, thus being in expeirienced at having comebacks, thus being a newb.
