TCY - Let's Go Duke! Let's Go Duke! (Year 4)

Welcome to year 4 of my Duke Blue Devils TCY Dynasty. You can read the dominance that was....year 1-3 below.

Year 1 (2-10)
Year 2 (2-9)
Year 3 (3-8)

Email Time
WR Terry Minkel leaves team due to a lack of playing time. Well Terry...you just weren't that good.

Great Lakes Scout Cedric Bowie has retired. Ced...we barely knew ya.

Defensive Coordinator Edward Curtis has retired. I actually give some props for the job he did last year.

Hirings
Defensive Coordinator: Glenn Bennink (50) - Glenn is nothing special but he was the best out there. His strong point is Injury Avoidance...which I find to be one of the most important qualities with either of your coordinators.

Great Lakes Scout: Rick Scribner (34) - Rick is your run-of-the-mill scout but he's young and hopefully will improve.

Scheduling
Code:
2006 Duke Schedule Rival: North Carolina Stadium Capacity: 33,900 Season Tickets Sold: 8,100 Week Opponent 2 at New Mexico State 3 SITKA 4 NORTHWESTERN $$5 at (48) Virginia $$6 at Maryland $$7 (4) FLORIDA STATE $$8 (36) WAKE FOREST $$10 (26) GEORGIA TECH $$11 at (22) North Carolina Stat $$12 NORTH CAROLINA $$13 at Clemson
We didn't have to make up the schedule this year because the two non-conference games we scheduled last year were home and home. We only have 8,100 season ticket holders again this year. That should go up after this season.

Recruiting Summary

We got a few surprises during our third year of recruiting. One was DE Mark Strand...who wasn't our initial choice at the position...but after we lost out on him he accepted the scholarship and has the best future potential of any freshman that we've had. He also helps us at the position that was our glaring weakness last season. This year's class was ranked #30.

Such a familiar spot for us...but I don't expect us to be there by the end of the year. FSU gets the nod and looks to be a step above everyone else.

Duke (0-0) at New Mexico State (0-0) (-1) No TV

Last season: 24-7 Dukies

Key Injuries - None

Preview - If a Duke team is able to dominate a game it was the one against the Aggies last season. We outgained them 445-217 and more importantly won the game 24-7. ILB Hunter Hickman was the game MVP as he had 2 sacks to go along with his 6 tackles.

Overall a good opening win for the Dukies. Matt Kimball was in control all game as he passed for 285 yards on 24-32 and 2 TD passes. Lamont Cooley...in getting his first start at RB...rushed 20 times for 101 yards and 3 TD's. And the D had 4 Int's.

Next up - Sitka comes down to Durham.

Sitka (1-1) at #46 Duke (1-0) (-9) No TV

Last season: 38-0 Dukies. We shut someone out?

Key Injuries - None

Preview - We were only up 17-0 at the end of three last year...then scored 21 points in the 4th to close it out. I'm a little bitter after the Timberwolves loss right now...so that's all I got for the preview.

After winning only my 9th game in this dynasty is it ok to critique any of them? Well granted it was storming...but we had some sloppy play before scoring a couple times in the 4th to make it look pretty. Kimball had his best game of his career by throwing for 381 yards...a school record...and 4 TD's. But was a bit sloppy with 4 Int's. Kerry Huffman also set a school record for 3 TD catches in one game.

Next up - Northwestern comes into town.

Week 4

Northwestern (1-1) at #46 Duke (2-0) (-9) No TV

Last season: Duke 24-21

Key Injuries
WR Vincent Duncan - Arthroscopic Knee Surgery - Out 5 weeks

Preview - We had to battle hard up in Evanston last year...scoring with 6 mins left in the game to pull out a 24-21 victory. The Wildcats were actually up 21-10 after three quarters before we finally woke up. This year...their primary O continues to be the I-Form and their offense is centered around Jr RB Lamar Newman. This three year starter has 380 yards rushing in two games so far this year...a 7.4 avg. They've been able to put up some points this year..31.0 ppg...so our D will have to step up...which they have done so far this year. On our side of the ball...Duncan being out is a bit of a blow...he'll be missed as we start the conference schedule.

Definitely a disappointing loss here to the Wildcats...our first in four years. They controlled the game for the first three quarters...up 17-12. And then fireworks ensued in the 4th. After the Cats kicked an 18 yd FG near the end of the 3rd...the Dukies had a three play series in which they handed the ball off to Dwayne Coffey three times with the third being a 34 yd TD run to make it 18-17. Then Northwestern countered with back to back TD's to go up 32-17. After they scored the 2nd TD...Derrick Turnbull took his 2nd return of the game back for a TD...this one a 101 KO return. We tried the onside..but Northwestern covered it up and that ended the game. I think us not having Duncan in the lineup kinda threw our passing game off a bit as we had a season low 171 yards and no TD's.

Next up - at Virginia to kick off the ACC season.

Duke (2-1) at #23 Virginia (2-0) (-6) TV5

Last season: 38-6 the pesky Cavs

Key Injuries
WR Vincent Duncan - Arthroscopic Knee Surgery - Out 4 weeks

Preview - Virginia has really had my number the first three seasons...well all ACC teams have had my number...but my games with the Cavs have never been close. Last year they jumped out to a 21-0 first quarter lead and cruised to a 32 point victory. We were able to stop their running game last year but they proceeded to pass for 234 yards. Let's go to Charlottesville.

Ok...now it's gotten to the point where it's starting to get ridiculous. For the 2nd time in as many ACC games...going back to last year...We've outplayed our opponent only to lose to some bogus late game TD. This time...we're on the road...playing good ball...out gaining the Cavs and we lose on a TD with :29 left in the game. Unreal. We will win a conference game this year.

Next up - at Maryland

Duke (2-2) at #50 Maryland (2-1) (-2) No TV

Last season: Loss at home 17-7

Key Injuries
WR Vincent Duncan - Arthroscopic Knee Surgery - Out 4 weeks

Preview - In last year's game we were in it...we just didn't quite have enough offense to stay with Maryland. But we held them to 17 points so that has to count for something. This year they've struggled barely beating W Virginia 7-3 and then getting shutout against NC State. So far their run intensive offense is only 95th in the nation. On our side of the ball...our passing game is clicking like never before. We ranked 7th in completions and attempts and 10th in passing yards with 1121.

WE DID IT! WE DID IT! After being robbed the week before by Virginia...we outplay our 3rd straight ACC opponent...and this time we come away with the win. It was ominous early as Kimball threw an Int and Maryland had an easy drive for a TD...a 3 yd pass from Franz to Sakowski. But then in the 2nd we came back with 2 straight TD's. A 2 yd TD pass to Lucero and then that was followed up by a 60 yd Int return for a TD by Sr Ricky Howe. Maryland came back to take a 17-14 lead...but we scored late in the 3rd to go up for good. Our D played great in the 4th shutting the Terps offense down to earn our first ACC victory.

Next up - The Noles come up to Durham.

Recruiting - On the flip side...we've had no one commit this year and have lost three recruits already.

Week 7

#3 Florida State (4-0) (-13) at Duke (3-2) TV4

Last season: Seminoles all over us 63-10

Key Injuries
WR Vincent Duncan - Arthroscopic Knee Surgery - Out 3 weeks

Preview - Florida St is just too awesome. Their roster is stacked and we still have a ways to go to get up to their level. I think we're just gonna enjoy our time on TV4 this week. Our first appearance. There are two other reasons we're not gonna do well in this game. 1) We've been partying all week and are a little hungover. 2) We're looking forward to the following week when Wake Forest comes to town. We have a little score to settle.

Well I think for the first time we weren't "totally" embarrassed. I can handle giving up 41 points to FSU at this point in my career. Our only TD was a 29 yd Turnbull punt return...the 2nd of his career.

Up next - Wake Forest....grrrrrr.

Wake Forest (0-5) at Duke (3-3) (-19) No TV

Last Season: All Wake Forest 79-0.

Key Injuries
WR Vincent Duncan - Arthroscopic Knee Surgery - Doubtful 2 weeks

Preview - Well well well...look who's limping into town this week...an 0-5 Wake Forest squad. It doesn't look anything like the team that beat us up 79-0 last year. The same team that was the #1 passing team in the nation last year. The same team that passed for 531 yards and 8 TD's and put up a total of 668 yards. We want to kill them..plain and simple.

Well we didn't kill Wake like we wanted to but considering that we lost 79-0 last year...I think that immediately qualifies a 27-24 victory...as a killing. Wake's problem this year is their defense. They gave up a total of 408 yards to our offense. 201 on the ground and 207 in the air. We just had an all-around good showing which included 7 sacks from our defense. Wow...2 wins in the conference...we're giddy.

Next up - Bye

#38 Georgia Tech (4-3) at Duke (4-3) (-10)

Last season: Georgia Tech 56-17

Key Injuries
DT Tommie Woodard - Sprained Knee - Questionable 2 weeks
WR Vincent Duncan - Arthroscopic Knee Surgery - Probable 1 weeks
ILB Hunter Hickman - Broken Hand - Probable 7 weeks

Preview - I'm a little confused as to how I should look at this game. On one hand I'm surprisingly a 10 pt favorite. On the other...Georgia Tech...despite having the same record as us has been much more effective against like opponents. But I'm at home...so anything can happen and this is somewhat of a breakout season so who knows? On the injury front...it looks like Duncan will be back in the lineup this week and Hickman said he'll suck it up despite having a broken hand. For G-Tech their starting RB Kerry Stryzinski will not be playing because of a dislocated elbow. Despite having a trips offense he is the most talented player they have.

We just didn't quite have it against the more talented Yellowjackets. We took advantage of a sluggish opponent in the first by getting two drives that ended up in FG's. That kinda cost us because once they got their offense headed in the right direction it only took one score to grabe the lead. Kimball had an ok game...but we just couldn't get our running game going.

Next up - at NC State

Duke (4-4) at #14 North Carolina State (7-1) (-19) TV5

Last season: NC State 24-14

Key Injuries
DT Tommie Woodard - Sprained Knee - Probable 1 weeks
ILB Hunter Hickman - Broken Hand - Probable 6 weeks

Preview - Last season NC State was the first conference foe that we actually had a chance to beat. We were up 14-10 with a little over a minute left before the Wolfpack scored on a TD pass with 1:15 left in the game and then intercepted a pass and took it for a TD on the next play from scrimmage. This year NC State seems to be a little bit better as they are ranked #14 with only one loss that came to the Noles. They defense is ranked 6th in the nation in points allowed.

Another tough loss to stomach. I left the penalties in the team stats to let you see one of the ways we shot ourselves in the foot. That would have been a nice win on our resume...but we can't quite pull it off. But to show you how close we got...after our last score we recovered the onside kick...but threw an Int on our last drive to end the game.

Next up - North Carolina comes to town.

Week 12

North Carolina (5-5) (-1) at Duke (4-5)

Last season: UNC 28-24

Key Injuries
DE Mark Strand - Degenerative Hip Condition - Out 45 weeks
ILB Hunter Hickman - Broken Hand - Probable 5 weeks

Preview - Before I get to last year's heartbreak...the loss of Mark Strand for the rest of the year and the beginning of the next is a big blow. Hopefully this injury won't hamper his growth the rest of his college career or force him to quit. Back to last year...UNC really stole one from us as they scored a TD with 1:01 left in the game to win 28-24. UNC's ground attack has been nothing too spectacular this year. They are 9th in the nation in carries but only 105th in ypc. They're big-time WR Hergett has been injured for most of the season and that has really hampered them. They're D has really struggled this season as they are 108th in rushing yards and 120th in passing yards allowed.

Ok...well we got a little sloppy in the 4th quarter but the lead was so big 34-0...that it didn't affect us too much. Matt Kimball had a great game throwing for over 300 yards for the 2nd time this season...his line 19-30 for 325 and 1 TD. FB Travis Castillo earned his first MVP of his career by catching 6 passes for 98 yards and a TD.

Next up - The final game of the year as we travel to Clemson.

Week 13

Duke (5-5) (-8) at Clemson (0-9) No TV

Last season: Clemson 23-13

Key Injuries
DE Mark Strand - Degenerative Hip Condition - Out 44 weeks
ILB Hunter Hickman - Broken Hand - Probable 4 weeks
TE Myron McGarrahan - Bruised Sternum - Probable 3 weeks

Preview - Well Clemson comes into this game having their worst season since this career began. But even though they are 0-9...7 of their losses have been by single digits. So we can't take them likely especially since we're on the road. The T-Formation has been run into the ground by the Tigers as they are 100th in rushing yards and 122nd in passing yards. One guy we have to watch out for on the Tiger defense is Sr ILB Roy Cone. Roy's got 100 tackles (27 TFL) on the season...that's 42 more than the 2nd place guy.

Well not the prettiest of wins...but like I said in the preview...Clemson's 7 of their 9 losses have been by single digits and tonight we were the 8th. Clemson made it a 2 pt game in the 4th after a Doug Severson TD run. Then we finally sewed it up with a Lamont Cooley TD run with 3:44 left. Six wins...not too shabby as we doubled our wins from last year and finished above .500 overall and right at .500 in the conference.

The ACC actually represented for the first time in four years. FSU had a win over OU in Rd 2 then took on NC State in the Quarters and NC State actually pulled out the upset 27-24. NC State then lost in the Semis against eventual champion UCLA. NC State won their opening round game vs Texas A&M...then had a win over Pittsburgh in Round 2. Former 2-time champion Michigan lost in the Semis to Penn State 23-21.
In the surprise of the tourney...Barrow upset Nebraska in the first round 16-3 but then got slaughtered by UCLA 69-0. Go Solcesimistic 8!
