Pre-season Staff Hiring Round 1 2006

Shake-up in San Francisco

It already now looks like that the weak result from last year will cost heads not only among the players but also among the staff in the 49ers Front office. Reliable souses inside the 49ers organisation say that the contracts to Hd coach Bart Finch and Def Coord. Deron Hughes will not be renewed when they runs out after the 2005 season. Also the contract to lead scout Josh Lewis can be in danger. San Francisco still has more then $6.5 mil available under the staff-cap and with a few high profile Hd Coaches available on the market those money can be put to use wisely. Among the available coaches with good track record can be mentioned Def Coord. Riddick Burke from Pittsburgh, Roosevelt Stevenson from Oakland and looks like good candidates. Def Coord. Jason Cottrill also from Oakland.
GM Northwood did not want to comment on any of the names but said “We will talk to everybody that can help the 49ers get back in to the playoffs, where we belong, next year. At the moment all names including coach Finch and Deron Hughes is still on the table but I think a few people will be surprised when we announce our coaching staff for the 2006 season.”

18 players retires

A total of 18 players decided to quiet the eNFL after the 2005 season. Among them were a few well-known names. Lets take a look on some of the players we will not see next year.

QB Rich Gannon
Rich finish his career with a 32-14-1 record. He won the eSuper Bowl I with Oakland Raiders in 2003 and has taken them to the playoffs twice. Last year part of his season was ruined due to injury. He finishes with 10043yds passing and that currently puts him in 8th place in the eNFL record books. Rich Gannon played 18 seasons. Young Gino Jansen will now have to step up and lead the Raiders.

Jeff Blake (Ind) and Rodney Peete (Pit) have also retired. Both players were backups in 2005 and did not have any chance of being a starter in 2006.

RB Jerome Bettis
Second on the eNFL all-time-rushing list with 4588yds and 31 TDs in 3 seasons. He also had good hands and was over 500yds catching all three seasons. Jerome has not missed a single game in three seasons and was a key factor behind Pittsburgh’s run for eSuper Bowl II. Pittsburgh will be looking hard to find a new RB in the upcoming draft to help Amos Zereoue.

RB Duce Staley
This must be a bit of a setback for Houston. Staley was a 9-year veteran and had only played for the Texans for one season. He had his best season in 2003 when broke 1000yds. He was one of only six running backs that had started all 48 games. With Houston picking 29 in the upcoming draft they need to trade for a new running back. Jamal Lewis is the best runner in FA but he will most likely get the franchise tag from Baltimore. That leaves them with Michale Bennett that’s not good enough for a Houston team aiming for the eSuper Bowl.

WR Curtis Conway
A huge target for Tim Couch has just despaired after 13 seasons. The Jets must fear that Wayne Chrebet will do the same as Conway next year.

DT Dana Stubblefield
Stubblefield was injured most of the 2005 season and his retirement was expected. Now Dominic Bender has to show why he was the Raiders second round draft pick in 2005.

WLB Jessie Armstead ARI
Had his best season with more then 100 tackles and 5 sacks. Retires after 13 seasons.

S Aeneas Williams
A nice way to finish your carrier. After 15 seasons Aeneas Williams finish with a big ring on his finger. He was voted All-League 1st team safety in 2003 and 2004. In 2005 his performance went down a little and he did not play all game due to injury. St Louis would like to see Zack Bronson take over his spot but its doubtful if the 49ers wants to let him go to their division rivals.

S Darren Woodson
Together with names as Ed McCaffrey and Tim Brown, Darren Woodson is selected in to the “Legends of the Game”. The last two years he did not see a lot of action and after 14 years his retirement as well earned.

FB Richie Anderson TBY, TE Dwayne Carswell DEN, C Dave Szott, DT John Randle, NT Jeff Zgonina, MLB Brian Williams, CB Ashley Ambrose NOS, and CB Otis Smith DET also retire.

Stadium proposal again

Once again San Francisco 49ers will try to get plans for a new stadium approved. There is still a 75% support for a new stadium to replace the old from 1961. That has also been the case the two previous years and both time the plans was turned down. GM Northwood still denies all plans about moving the franchise to Los Angeles.

The final plans for the new stadium proposal is still not revealed but the 49ers will most likely ask for a new outdoor stadium with 85.000 seats, 10.000 club seats and 100 new luxury boxes. The price tag for this new construction will be close to $700.000.000.

Last season San Francisco’s attendance record jumped back up 5% to 67.200 (96.2%) after a 6% fall they year before. They did have an 8% decrees in ticket revenue manly because the franchise didn’t have any home playoff games like last year. The suite revenue still went up 3%.

Financial report SF49ers 2005

San Francisco presented their financial report for 2005 on a press conference last night and it was not all happy reading. For the first time under new GM Northwood, San Francisco 49ers lost money. The growth in revenue stalled from last year’s +13% to this year’s +1%. The total revenue was $116.800.000.
At the same time the cost side went up 25% to almost $125 mil. It was player’s salaries and bonuses that went up the most together with amount spend by the coaching staff. That gives the franchise a total loss of $6.5mil in 2005 compared to last years $17mil profit. I the period GM Northwood has been in control of the 49ers front office the club have made a total profit of $34.7 mil. That is acceptable but fare from the $274mil the Redskin have in profit the last three years. Arizona sets a record this year as the first team to loss more then $100mil in one year. In the last three years the Cardinals have now lost more then $180mil. They will be looking forward to moving in to their new stadium this year.

The franchise value has also gone down a bit from last years estimated $607.5 mil to this years $602mil. Philadelphia is now the most valuable franchise worth more then $754mil.

The salary cap went up another $7.7mil and is now $98.1mil. With 37 players under contract and only $3.8mil to use on new players the front office will have a tough job in front of them the next couple of weeks. Its already announced that Zack Bronson will not play in San Francisco next year and other players will also have to find new clubs or rework their contracts. The 9ers have also confirmed that they will use their right to franchise SLB Julian Peterson this year. That will cost them around $5mil if they can’t get him to sign a long-term contract.

SF49ers 2005 scheduel

San Francisco has received the schedule for the upcoming season and it’s not all happy reading. This year they will have to play the always-tough eAFC West with San Diego, Denver, eSuper Bowl I finalist Oakland and eSuper Bowl III finalist Kansas. They will also have to play eNFC division winner Green Bay. That together with the two division games against eSuper Bowl III champions St Louis Rams means that the 49ers will go up against all the teams with a 12-4 record from last year.

The good part is that when the matches against Rams, Raider, Packers, Broncos and Chiefs its out of the way the 10 remaining games is all against teams that finished below .500 last season.

San Francisco is also a bit disappointed to have the bye week already in week 5.

Code:
San Francisco 49ers 2006 Regular Season Schedule Week Opponent vs. Team Last years Pct Week 1 ST. LOUIS RAMS 2-5 .750 12-4 Week 2 OAKLAND RAIDERS first meeting .531 8-7-1 Week 3 at Carolina Panters 0-1 .437 7-9 Week 4 at Chicago Bears 1-0 .343 5-10-1 Week 5 OPEN - - Week 6 at Seattle Seahawks 5-1 .406 6-9-1 Week 7 DETROIT LIONS 0-2 .437 7-9 Week 8 at Green Bay Packers 0-1 .750 12-4 Week 9 MINNESOTA VIKINGS 3-0 .437 7-9 Week 10 at St. Louis Rams 2-5 .750 12-4 Week 11 ARIZONA CARDINALS 3-3 .375 6-10 Week 12 at Denver Broncos 0-0 .531 8-7-1 Week 13 WASHINGTON REDSKINS 2-0 .312 5-11 Week 14 SAN DIEGO CHAGERS first meeting .437 7-9 Week 15 SEATTLE SEAHAWKS 5-1 .406 6-9-1 Week 16 at Kansas City Chiefs first meeting .750 12-4 Week 17 at Arizona Cardinals 3-3 .375 6-10 ------- ------------- 26-22 .502 126-125-5

The 9ers is not the only team with a tough program. Defending eSuper Bowl winner St Louis will have to prove them self, right from the beginning of the new season. They have a brutal program opening the season with games against 49ers, Kansas, Phili, Detroit and Green Bay to start the season.

San Francisco will play Denver, New England, San Diego and the Jets in the 4 exhibition games.

Breaking News: GM Northwood opens for Terrell Owens trade

In an interview with eNFL insider earlier this week San Francisco GM Northwood opened the door for a trade of their super-star WR Terrell Owens. It was when asked if any player was guarantied a place on this year’s roster, that GM Northwood talked about the possibility of trading Terrell Owens this year.

Quote GM Northwood
No player is bigger then the team and we will do whatever it takes to make the 49ers a better team. Nobody has a guarantied place on next year’s roster and every player is available for trade if it’s for the better of the team.
We know already now that it will be almost impossible for us to re-sing a player like Terrell Owens when his contract expires next year. So if we get the right offer now, then why not trade him when we will get something in return instead of waiting until he walks for free next year. A lot of team have a lot of cap-room available and will be able to offer him the contract he wants. We have not talked to any clubs and we will definitely prefer to keep Terrell but if the price is right and it will make the team better we are ready to talk.
End Quote

Terrell Owens has been over 900yds in all the three last season with San Francisco and is ranked among the top-10 WR in the eNFL. In his last year under contract with the 49ers he will make $6.5mil in salary and 900.000 more in bonuses. As everybody knows, he has a strong personality and is well liked in San Francisco. He has great skills avoiding dropping passes and is a sure target on 3rd-downs.

Code:
GS Targ Ctch Yds Avg TD Drop YAC 2003 16 160 90 1243 13.8 8 5 190 2004 16 102 56 902 16.1 4 4 130 2005 16 112 59 919 15.5 7 3 125 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Career 48 374 205 3064 14.9 19 12 445

Teams like Dallas, Detroit, Miami and New England will properly be very interested in talking with the 49ers. They are all looking to upgrade their WR coupes and have plenty of cap-money available. San Francisco have not specified if they are looking for players or draft picks in return for Terrell Owens.

The 49ers has earlier announced that also Zack Bronson is available for trade.

It has not been possible to get a comment from GM Northwood or Terrell Owens tonight.

Pre-season Staff Hiring Round 1 2006
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

b]Staff Hiring Round 1[/b]

The first round of staff hiring is now done. Three teams hired new scouts (NED, HOU and TBY) all with salaries around 1mi. The Eagles is now the only team without a scout under contract but both Atlanta and Cincinnati are looking to replace their current scout.
Two teams made deals with a new Off. Coord. In week one. Houston used $1.85mil on a three-year deal with Nolan Keith while Miami had to pay $4.01mil for a 5-year deal with Barry Baker. Saints, Jets and Broncos all hired Def. Coord for a price around 3-4mil. Also three teams got a deal done with a new Hd Coach. Carolina, Jacksonville and Washington can all move along with their new Hd Coach under contract. San Francisco offered contracts to Hd Coach Roosevelt Stevenson and Riddick Burke. Both contracts are worth around $3mil. They will have to wait until next week to see if that’s enough to “steel” them away from their current teams Oakland and Pittsburgh.

Arizona clean house
Arizona Cardinals used the first week of staff hiring to clean house. 7 players were released from Arizona this week. Most of the players were roster-fill that had never played a single game for the Cardinals but a few noticeable was also released. 2003 All-League 1st Team Cornerback Duane Starks was released. He was the #10 overall pick in the 1998 draft by the Ravens but have played the last 3 years for Arizona in the eNFL. He only played 3 games his season due to injury and never fully recovered. 10-year veteran TE Freddie Jones was also released. He started 15 games last year for the Cardinals. He was the best TE on the Cardinals team this year and is now the second best TE available in FA. That leaves the Cardinals with 38 players under contract and $9,4mil under the cap.

The eNFL is getting expensive

After three seasons it’s starting to get expensive to have a star player on your team. His year 11 players have contracts guaranteeing them more then $10mil. That’s up from 3 players last year. Lets have a look on the players costing their team’s big dollars this year.

11) SLB John Mobley. Has been with Denver all three years and this year have a contract worth $10mil. With the Broncos cap-trouble its possible he will not see all that money and that he will be traded but he is guarantied $4.3mil in bonus money.

10) DE Trevor Pryce. Another Broncos player with a huge contract and more then $11mil locked up in bonus-money. He did not have his best season in 2005 but he will likely stay in Denver as it will be way to expensive to release him.

9) LT Orlando Pace. He was brought in to Arizona last year from Miami to help the Cardinal turn the team around. He was one of the few “new” star players Arizona purchased that actually delivered. He was selected All-League 1st team tackle. He will make $10.4mil this season

8) QB Jeff Garcia. Garcia had his best season for the 49ers last year if you look at yards alone breaking 3000yds for the first time but his worst looking season looking at QBR. With a base-salary of $6.5 mil and $4mil more in bonuses he has to perform better this year. He is in his last year of his current contract with the 49ers and will be one of the players the front office will try to get to sign a new contract.

7) QB Kerry Collins. With his 31 TDs last season it’s not a surprise that the Giants have to pay him $10.7mil to play this year. Everybody in New York just hopes that he can stay healthy in his last year under contract.

6) QB David Carr. Another QB with a huge season with over 4000yds and he has only played 5 years. This year he will make $10.9mil but next years contracts will be a bit cheaper for the Texans.

5) QB Joey Harrington. Moving up in the big league and among the $11mil players we find Joey Harrington. Next year he will only cost the Lions $6mil and that’s more in line with his current level of performance. This year he managed to cut down on his interceptions but $11mil is still a lot of money for a player that have not yet had a +.500 season.

4) WE Randy Moss. Randy makes almost $3mil more then the second highest paid WR in the eNFL. But as one of only three WR with more then 4000yds catching and 25 TDs the Vikings gets value for their money. He still got three years left on his current contract with the Vikings.

3) QB Steve McNair. A big jump up to Steve McNair and his $13mil contract. He is also in his last year of the current contract and will try to bounce back from a terrible season with the Titan.

2) QB Brett Fave. A lot of people in Green Bay were very relived when Bret Favre announced that he would come back for the 2006 season. He has close to $9.5mil locked up just in bonus money with Green Bay over the next 4 years and that would have been a huge cap-hit if he had decided to retire. His salary this year is a cool $10mil + $3.7mil in bonus and he can be worth it if he finally manage to win a playoff game this season.

1) LT Jonathan Ogden. The freak contract to Jonathan Ogden is still coming back to hunt Baltimore Ravens. This year his base salary is $7mil but with a $7mil bonus this year and another $4mil next year this contract is just killing the Ravens. Its possible they can re-work the contract but the $11mil in bonus money cannot be changed.

This is the list over the most expensive player in the eNFL before the 2006 season. The list can change rapidly when the GMs again have the opportunity to negotiate with the players and get new cap-friendly contracts signed. Other players can also make their way in to the list from free agency. Some very high profile players will make big splash if they are not hit with the franchise tag. Players like Peyton Manning, Chris Samuels, Marvin Harrison, Charles Woodson and Marc Bulger is all looking for the big payday.

Breaking News

Major news is coming out from the San Francisco front office this evening. All the big networks will tomorrow morning run a story on a huge trade between San Francisco 49ers and Denver Broncos. The San Francisco Chronicle have learned that the deal includes the 49ers first round pick in this years draft (5th overall) that will be sent to Denver for their first round pick (23rd overall). I compensation San Francisco will also get RG Steve Hutchinson.

Steve Hutchinson was drafted in 2001 by Seattle as the # 17 overall from Michigan. He played his first eNFL season with them in 2003 but was included in one of the many Seattle/Denver-trades after that season.
He is currently under contract until 2011 and will cost San Francisco $2.9mil the first year of his contract. He has not missed a single game in the three years of the eNFL.

He will be a key part of the 9ers O-line that now looks like this:

Derrick Deese - Eric Heitmann - Jeremy Newberry - Steve Hutchinson - Kwame Harris

San Francisco’s GM Northwood had the following comment when we talked to him this evening.

Quote GM Northwood
Hutchinson is a fantastic player and we are glad to have him on our team. With his long contract and 6-years of experience he will be the perfect fit together with Deese, Newberry, Heitmann and Harris. We had to give up our #5 pick to get him but we still see it as a good deal when we get a class player like this but still get to pick in the first round (23rd). San Francisco has never been afraid to move down in the draft and hat will not change now.
Giving up the #5 pick overall (1700 value points) for the #23 (760 value points) cost us 940 value points. That equals a #17 pick. With Hutchinson already an established player that has proven his value I think we made a good trade and can defend the price tag. We could have tried to move down and draft G Ernest Goodwin but his 81 Vol. scared us off and we would not be sure to have a starter ready this season. We are still looking over the draft calls to find the hidden diamonds and I am sure we will have a good draft this season.
I can also confirm that we have now received a concert offer on Terrell Owens. We cannot revile what team we are talking to but the offer would give us an extra pick this year (second round) and next year (second round). If we don’t get any better last minute offers from other teams we will probably go for that deal. This will create a big hole at FL that can be difficult to fill considering the WR draft class looks very weak this year but we are already working to solve that problem.

Pre-season Free Agency Round 1 2006
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Free Agency Round 1

San Francisco spent the fist week of fee agency to rework contracts with several players to make some more room under the cap. The biggest contract was of cause the one to Jeff Garcia. This was defiantly a priority for San Francisco as Garcia was in his last year of his contract. They agreed on a new 3-year deal worth $21mil that will keep him in red and gold until 2008. Jeff Garcia will get $8.2mil in new bonus money but will only receive $1.24mil in normal salary this year. The cap-cost over the next three years will look like this: 2006= 7.87mil, 2007=7.85mil, 2008=9.13mil. The contract will help San Francisco free up close to 3mil in cap-money this year.

WR Brandon Lloyd, C Brad Meester, CB Jimmy Williams and TE Aaron Walker was all signed to new and longer contracts that helped San Francisco reduce the cap.

San Francisco also signed K Owen Pochman to a long-term deal. For the next 5years he will be kicking for the 49ers and for that he will be paid $7.4mil.

The announced trade with Denver was also completed this week. Steve Hutchinson arrived in San Francisco for his medical check and is now ready to continue his career in San Francisco after playing in Seattle and Denver the years before.

The most interest this first week of FA was given the surprise FA Peyton Manning. Several teams were offering him huge contracts but it was Carolina who won the bidding-war. If it was the voidable year in the end of the contract or the 20mil in bonus money that made the difference is unknown. Most people in San Francisco are just happy he didn’t ended up in Arizona.

Some of the money New Orleans saved by not franchising Manning was used to sign MLB Dan Morgan from Carolina. He received the second biggest contract in the first round of FA worth $28.5mil. 8 other players also singed in the first round. The Saints have also found their replacement for Manning. They have decided to go after Trent Dilfer from Arizona and hope to sign him in stage 3. The only three teams still in the marked for a franchise quarterback are now Dallas, Arizona and Chicago. All three teams draft in the top-6 but its questionable if they are willing to take the chance on Calvin Hess.

San Francisco is still tight-lipped about the Terrell Owens deal. Its still very much and open question if he will stay in the bay-arrear for the last year of his contract.

Pre-season Free Agency Round 2-4 2006
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Free Agency Round 2-4

The last 48 hours have been an emotional roller coaster for the 49ers front office. In that period of time three different press releases has been written about the same topic. The trade of Terrell Owens to Houston.

First San Francisco was ready to release the information about the trade of Terrell Owens to Houston for their second and sixth round pick this year and a second round pick next year. The text was printed and just ready to be forward to the press when Houston requested the 49ers to keep quiet about the deal for another 24houers.

A second press release was prepared when the news broke about the Houston / St Louis deal that moved WR Tyrone Calico and a 2008 4th round pick to Houston for ILB Terry Pierce and WR Jabbar Gaffney. The 49ers front office was sure that meant that the deal for Owens was off. With Tyrone Calico under contract why target 11-year veteran Terrell Owens in his last year of his contract?

And now its official. Terrell Owens is no longer a 49er. The deal is confirmed and the front office will now have to start working on a 3rd press release. Houston stunned everybody not only by confirming the Owens deal but also picking up another 11-year veteran Marvin Harrison from the Colts on a franchise contract.

The hunt for a new WR will now start and with close to $10mil available under the cap and three draft picks in the two first rounds San Francisco have some options. The first mock draft of 2006 even have San Francisco drafting the #1 overall WR in this years draft (see mock draft Here).

We will be back with more information when San Francisco has finished their 3rd press release and we are also looking forward to an official statement from Houston GM SplitP1.

2006 Mock Draft

#1
Name: Ethan Ford
Pos: LDE
College: Missouri
Adjst Grade: 8.4
Comment: This is really not a big need for the Titans but they have no choice. If they don’t manage to move out of the #1 spot before the beginning of the draft they must take on of the two LDE at the top of the draft board. Ford is “only” ranked second but we think he will be drafted first because of his lower Vol-rating. He will be a fearsome team with Jevon Kearse.

#2
Name: Christian Roberts
Pos: LDE
College: Illinois
Adjst Grade: 8.5
Comment: Washington is moving nowhere. They can defiantly need a DE and here they will get one that can make a difference. 54% developed and maxed out in all categories beside pass-rush strength. Possible the only easiest pick in this years draft.

#3
Name: Bob Bush
Pos: RDT
College: Tenn. - Chattanooga

Comment: Bob will be an instant upgrade to the Dallas defends. Last year Dallas had a great draft and traded out of the number #1 but still got the player they wanted. Expect Dallas to work their magic again this year and make a smart move with their fist pick.

#4
Name: JJ Rose
Pos: RB
College: Air Force
Adjst Grade: 6.4
Comment: This huge guy (6-0, 239) is 78% developed and Chicago will get a player ready to start. He will see a lot of action this year. His high Vol-rate (70) will worry some but the Bears are willing to take that chance.

#5
Name: Brant Chatman
Pos: RDE
College: Louisiana State
Adjst Grade: 6.1
Comment: With only 18 players under contract Denver needs players all over the place. This is a team that will take years to re-build. This is a guess in the dark as they can decide to go in any direction with this pick.

#6
Name: Roger Durham
Pos: LT
College: Baylor
Adjst Grade: 6.3
Comment: Oakland traded with Arizona to move up to this spot. Lincoln Kennedy will most likely retire next year and I think Oakland will grab his replacement right here. They will really like his 1 in Vol-rating.

#7
Name: Dwayne Stevens
Pos: LDT
College: Miami, Florida
Adjst Grade: 6.2
Comment: If Roger Durham is still on the board Seattle will pick him straight away but with Oakland picking fifth that’s not likely. Then they must look in another direction. With Rashad Moore out for the season (ALC Knee surgery) they will need extra help at DT.

#8
Name: Derek Wallace
Pos: SILB
College: Tulsa
Adjst Grade: 5.9
Comment: The best LB in the draft. He is also strong and looks like a safe pick. Has no real weaknesses and will be able to start this year.

#9
Name: Adrian Bertrand
Pos: CB
College: Muskingum
Adjst Grade: 5.9
Comment: Detroit doesn’t need an S or DT and will pick the best CB in this year’s draft. The two previous years the #1 overall pick have been CBs. This year the CB will have to wait until #9. Adrian is the fastest player in this year’s draft.

#10
Name: Gene Conway
Pos: C
College: Chadron State
Adjst Grade: 6.1
Comment: Yes it’s a bit of a reach to take a C with the 10th overall pick. On the other hand is it a nice match for an otherwise strong looking Bengals team. He is fast and smart and comes with a low Vol-rating. Expect Cincinatti to move down to 15 in a trade with Clevland and still pick Conway.

#11
Name: Ernest Goodwin
Pos: LG
College: Hawaii
Adjst Grade: 6.2
Comment: The Vikings currently only got one G under contract. He is the second best player left in the draft and defiantly a need for Minnesota.

#12
Name: Clarence Schwartz
Pos: FS
College: Auburn
Adjst Grade: 7.1
Comment: The bottom has fallen totally out of the market for safeties in the eNFL. 9 safeties with +40 future rating are still available in FA and more is available for trade. That’s the reason Clarence Schwartz drops all the way to #12. Safeties are not a big need for the Jets but this is steel the cant says no to.

#13
Name: John Garnes
Pos: RT
College: Mississippi State
Adjst Grade: 5.5
Comment: San Diego have drafted C without much luck for the last two years. They will think an extra time before drafting one again this year and now in the first round. With their two RT ready to retire John Garnes will get the time he needs to develop in to a quality player.

#14
Name: Sammie Floyd
Pos: FS
College: Penn State
Adjst Grade: 6.6
Comment: Another steel of you really need a safety. It’s not a huge need for Miami but they can’t say no to Sammie Floyd at #14.

#15
Name: Norman Greer
Pos: RB
College: Kansas State
Adjst Grade: 5.9
Comment: Cleveland will try to move up and grab one of the two S in the top of the draft cause that’s the one big hole I can see in an otherwise strong team. I can see them changing place with the Bengals. If they stay in #15 they will have to go another way. Garrison Hearst is getting old (12-year veteran) and last years draft steel Jumbo Fields need a backup.

#16
Name: Trent Dirita
Pos: MLB
College: Wayne State (Neb.)
Adjst Grade: 5.6
Comment: A solid pick. No real weaknesses and did very well in the Agil-test. Not as well developed as Derek Wallace but fare behind.

#17
Name: Lawrence Hickman
Pos: FB
College: Arkansas
Adjst Grade: 5.5
Comment: Fred McCrary was last years All-League 1st Team fullback but as a 10-year veteran his numbers is starting to go down and Rob Wolf is not the answer to that problem.

#18
Name: J.J. Kobdish
Pos: RB
College: Memphis
Adjst Grade: 5.9
Comment: Michael Pittman cannot carry the Bills alone. He needs desperate help. JJ has great speed to the outside and a lot of power inside.

#19
Name: Kenyon Mason
Pos: CB
College: Tennessee
Adjst Grade: 5.4
Comment: Tampa only got 2 CB under contract and has not made any moves in FA to fix that problem. Kenyon Mason is the second best corner in the draft.

#20
Name: Jared Sanderson
Pos: DT
College: Wake Forest
Adjst Grade: 5.9
Comment: With only 1 RB (Aaron Stecker) under contract that’s a huge need. Pittsburgh must try to trade up and get Norman Greer or J.J. Kobdish. Jared Sanderson will also help but it’s just not what they need in the first round.

#21
Name: Kurt Porras
Pos: LG
College: Florida
Adjst Grade: 5.1
Comment: If the Colts succeed in re-signing Eric Beverly he will be the only G under contract. They have tried to sign two Green Bay players in FA without luck. Kurt Porras is a big guy (6-8, 340) but still had the 3rd best Agil-test among the guards.

#22
Name: Jamie Wallace
Pos: QB
College: Washington
Adjst Grade: 5.0
Comment: Arizona moved down from #6 in the trade with Oakland. They are still without a QB and Jamie Wallace can be the real deal. He is the best-developed QB in the draft and comes with a low Vol-rate. The problem is that he only knows seven formations and throws to many interceptions.

#23
Name: Graham Leskanic
Pos: WR
College: Ohio State
Adjst Grade: 5.7
Comment: Most other teams have avoided Graham Leskanic because of his high Vol-rate (98). With Terrell Owens in Houston that’s a luxury San Francisco cannot afford to take. They have to pick Leskanic and hope for the best.

#24
Name: Everett Barraza
Pos: LCB
College: Willamette
Adjst Grade: 5.2
Comment: Tommy Knight got a new contract his year but he is just not good enough to play corner for the Ravens.

#25
Name: Wayne Goodwin
Pos: LDE
College: Butler
Adjst Grade: 5.5
Comment: New York is in desperate need for a RB to help Tiki Barber and Roderick Ignasiak or an extra tackle. Goodwin will also be a good help and he is currently the best available in the draft.

#26
Name: Dana Yazzie
Pos: DT
College: Southern Methodist
Adjst Grade. 5.5
Comment: Dana Yazzie looks like a very solid player this late in the draft. The Eagles only have two DT under contract and one of them is 11-year veteran Hollis Thomas.

#27
Name: Will Appleberry
Pos: C
College: Maryland
Adjst Grade: 5.9
Comment: Denver can save more then $2.5mil if they release C Larry Moore and they need all the money they can get. Will Appleberry can hopefully be signed to a long and cheap contract. Denver is the first team with two picks in the first round.

#28
Name: Lance Cook
Pos: RG
College: Auburn
Adjst Grade: 4.9
Comment: With only two guards under contract Lance Cook looks like a nice match. A high Vol-rate but Atlanta can afford to take the chance.

#29
Name: Steve Wasczewski
Pos: RT
College: Syracuse
Adjst Grade: 4.9
Comment: Bengals second pick in the first round (from Houston). They can continue to upgrade the o-line with RT Steve Wasczewski.

#30
Name: Phil Hansen
Pos: SS
College: Missouri
Adjst Grade: 5.4
Comment: Green bay have 13 players with +10 years experience currently on their roster and got the 3rd oldest team overall. Doug Evans has not been offered a new contract and Darren Sharper is listed as probable with a severe depression.

#31
Name: Rusty Webb
Pos: DT
College: California
Adjst Grade: 5.4
Comment: Only two DT currently under contract. Rusty is a strong and smart NT that’s comes with a low Vol-rate.

#32
Name: Ken Rountree
Pos: RG
College: Clemson
Adjst Grade: 4.8
Comment: One of the few places the eSuper Bowl Champs look a little weak. Its also one of the few things they have not worked on in FA.

Houston stunned everybody not only by confirming the Owens deal but also picking up another 11-year veteran Marvin Harrison from the Colts on a franchise contract.

... and we are also looking forward to an official statement from Houston GM SplitP1.

Sorry for the scare. I would never back out of a deal that I had finalized with a fellow GM. That would be very, very bad form.

The reason I had you wait with the announcement is that Indy was hesitating on giving Harrison to a division rival, especially one with Carr as QB. At the time of my PM to you, the Calico deal had not yet been finalized and Indy was wavering. I only expected to get one of the two and didn't want the Owens announcement to ruin my chances with the other deals.

Hope that makes sense.

As far as an official press release from the Texans...hehe...one just might show up in my new eNFL thread or on the eNFL message board.

2006 Draft Special
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hot prospect outside top 125

In every draft this fare in the eNFL their have been a few AAA players (Abnormal Athletic Ability for their position group) at every position. They have normally been the top of the class and all drafted in the first round. But this year is different. It’s not every year you find a top draft prospect ranked outside of the top 125 but that’s the case this year.

Let us introduce Jerald Emerson

Ranked 132nd Jerald Emerson from Florida State looks like an ordinary SS getting ready for this years draft. He is only ranked as the 9th best S in the draft with and Adjusted rating of 3.8. But a closer look at his numbers tells a different story. Lets take a look at his combine numbers.

Dash
4.46 are the best time among the S this year and tied 13 overall in the draft. The time is also good enough to rank him as an AAA player (more then 1.5 times better then average for his position group).

Sole
43 in the Sole-test ranks him second among S way ahead of the two top S of the draft Clarence Schwartz and Sammie Floyd. Its also ranks him inside the top 15 overall. Again he is well above what is needed to rank him as an AAA player (39.75 for S).

Strg
Jerald Emerson is the strongest S in this year’s draft. With 27 repetitions he managed 12.5 more reps then the average for a rookie safety (509 players averaged 14.48 rep). Again AAA material and an impressive performance by a guy only weighing 177pound.

Agil
7.08 gives him the 4th best time among S and tied for 30 overall and again a AAA performance.

Jerald Emerson also comes with a very low Vol-rating of only 3 and is currently 52% developed. His scout report is mixed. He looks solid in a bump and run defends but will struggle in man to man.

All this makes him the perfect AAA players and hot prospect in the upcoming draft. What is not normal is that his is ranked 132nd.

Their is not doubt that he will be drafted this year (in 2004 21 S was drafted) but the big question is of cause how much the GMs will let his combine results influence their decision making when they sit down and make their draft boards. Everybody knows that the market for S is almost non-excising this year but Jerald Emerson will be drafted inside the Top-100.

For more info on AAA players, please read Skydogs excellent work on the subject.

Pre-season Free Agency Round 5-7 2006
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Free Agency Round 5-7

This was a bad week for San Francisco. Nothing they tried in FA worked out. The biggest blow was to see LDE John Engelberger turn down a new contract proposal and instead sign for rivals Seattle. He will cost them more then $5mil in cap-money the already the first year of the contract. Orland Jordan, Andre Carter and veteran Chidi Ahanotu will be the defensive ends for San Francisco this year.

San Francisco also tried to address the WR problem by offering a contract to FA Santana Moss. Instead of getting a chance to be a starter in San Francisco (S Moss has only started 9 games in three season) Moss decided to resign with the Jets where he will be a backup to veteran Wayne Chrebet once again. Two veteran WRs is still available in FA. Joe Horn (11-years veteran) and Rod Smith (12-year veteran) has still not signed new contracts but its doubtful if San Francisco will try to sign any of them. Part of the reasoning behind letting Terrell Owens go was the reluctance to handing over big money to veteran players close to retirement. With Jo Horn asking for more then $8mil just in signing bonus it’s unlikely to see him in red and gold. He has already turned down 15 contract offers offering him contract between 1 and 4 years worth anything from $2.5mil to more then $20mil.

With CB Ahmed Plummer not signed for next year the 49ers also tried o add some depth to the CB position by offering a contract to Will Allen. That offer also came back negative when he also decided to resign with the Jets. The most likely scenario in the San Francisco secondary now is for Zack Bronson to be moved to corner and Tony Parrish and last year’s first round draft pick Morris Strong to stay at safeties.

Other Free Agency News Round 5-7
$47.75mil was the price tag the Steelers had to swallow for signing DT Albert Haynesworth to a 5-year contract. Close to $15mil of that money was signing bonus. Six other teams also tried to sign him but were out of luck.

One of the teams that came up short in the fight for Haynesworth was his old team Tennessee. They did get a sort of compensation when they signed ex-Steelers NT Casey Hampton to a 4-year deal (last year voidable)

Arizona is still looking for a quarterback. They have offers out to veteran Rob Johnson who have played for Washington and Miami and to last year’s rookie Cris Witt. Its unlikely that any of them will be the starter for Arizona this season and its roomed that top ranked quarterback draft prospects Calvin Hess, Jamie Wallace and Jon Arnold will come to Arizona for private workouts this week.

eMNF
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Are you ready for some football

This season SF-Chronicle has decided to change the coverage of the eNFL. When the eNFL started three seasons ago there was talk about having a MNF game each week. Unfortunately that plan was never followed up and the idea was put on ice. With other networks (IHOF) starting up MNF and the added pressure from other channels (their is now three eNFL dynasties) we think this is the right time to give the idea a second chance. Therefore we a proud to present:

eMonday Night Football

Each eMNF game will get a full pre-game presentation of both teams with a closer look on their strong and weak points. We will also give you a closer look on the most important stats for each team on both offends and defends. After the game we will give you the inside story to what happen and why the result turned out as it did. We will also try to get comments from both GMs before and after each game.
The full schedule for the 2006 is not yet ready and we are willing to listen to any team that might have a special game they mean should be an eMNF game. We will put all the classic rivalries of the eNFL on the program as well as some of the more interesting match-ups this year. We will do our best to have as many different teams represented as possible. With the current schedule only two teams will not play an eMNF game this season. We apologise to Denver and Arizona in advance and promise to have them on the show next season.

We will of cause continue to follow all San Francisco’s games close this season.

The first draft of the eMNF schedule looks like this.

Week 1
@
In week one we will take a look at the two biggest star-quarterbacks going head to head. It’s the 7th time the two division rivals teams plays and the Titans comes in to the game with a 5-1 record. This will also be the first chance to see what David Carr can do with his new crew of star receivers (Owens, Harrison and Calico). It will also be the first chance to take a look at this years #1 draft pick.

Week 2
@
The re-mach of last year’s eSuper Bowl is of cause a given eMNF game. Marc Bulger is back for the eSuper Bowl champions but due to cap-trouble the Rams have already added seven new players to this year’s team and released or traded just as many. Kansas on the other hand has still not added one new player to this year’s team and will be looking for revenge for last years defeat.

Week 3
@
For the first time ever can we expect the Seahawks to come out and throw the ball. With Jay Fiedler and David Boston on the roster it gives the offends a whole new dimension. But the Saints will still have to look out for Ricky Williams. New Orleans hope they can get back to the playoffs like last year but this time without the help of Peyton Manning. This year they will have to relay on Trent Dilfer to take them there.

Week 4
@
This is the chance to see two teams you don’t normally hear a lot about. None of them have ever made it to the playoffs and both have a below .500 win-percentage. The Jaguars star player is still the hardest working player in the eNFL Fred Taylor and the Jets hope for miracles from Tim Couch and Wayne Chrebet this year.

Week 5
@
The Lions has received a lot of praise for the way they are building their team in recent weeks. We take a look at them when they travel to Wisconsin and play the cheese-heads in Green Bay. Joey Harrington has more then 3000yds passing in all three previous seasons but is still without a win against the Packers. Breat Favre will do everything to keep the streak alive and take it to 7-0.

Week 6
@
This will be a good test for new Panthers quarterback Peyton Manning. With him on the team Carolina will be expected to win a lot of games but against an always-tough Eagles team he will have his work cut out. Phili is one of only four teams that have made the playoff all three years and they will expect to be back this year.

Week 7
@
A good rivalry from the eAFC West. Oakland is in their first season without Rich Gannon and by now they will have a good feel for new quarterback Gino Jansen. With three wins to each team in the previous meetings the two teams knows each other in and out. There has never been more then 10 points between the two teams the last three years.

Week 8
@
This week we will take a close look at the division rivalry between the Ravens and Bengals. Until now they have split the six game three each and this can be a key game in a wide-open division. This is the time of the season the Bengal normally start getting hot and winning games. This year they will hope to be off to a better start to the season while the Ravens hope they can repeat last years achievement and get in to the playoffs.

Week 9
@
The Buccaneers really knows how to play the Giants. They have won both previous meetings. This will be the first time we see new quarterback Bob Springer leading the Bucks for an entire season. Lets also hop that Kerry Collins is injury-free and ready to play.

Week 10
@
Winner of eSuper Bowl II Pittsburgh this week travels to Cleveland to play the Browns. Last year they lost both games and didn’t even made the playoffs for the first time. Cleveland hops that this can be the year where they finally will get to play football in January.

Week 11
@
A classic rivalry. This is two teams that just don’t like each other. In the eNFL Green Bay have had the edge with and 4-1-1 record. The can be the first and last time we ever see Brett Favre in a eMNF game. The Bears is looking to make it back to the playoffs for the first time since the 2003 season.

Week 12
@
This is the first meeting between the two teams in the eNFL. Last year everything started to go wrong for these two teams from week 12. Miami lost a spot in last year’s playoff due to a slump where they only won 1 of the last 6 games and almost the same fait happened to the Vikings with only two wins in the last 6 games they lost out on a wildcard. Lest see who will have better luck in week 12 this year.

Week 13
@
We take a second look at St Louis and how their defends of the title goes this week when they travel to Atlanta to play the Falcons. Atlanta finally got it together last season and won their division only to loss their first playoff game ever. Vick and Co hope to get a new chance this season.

Week 14
@
A clash between two Californian teams. They have only played once in a pre-season game back in 2003. Now it’s for real. With Denver re-building and Oakland without Rich Gannon San Diego must have high hopes that this can be the year they have a chance after much turmoil with shifting GMs. For San Francisco this is a must win game if they wants to keep pace with the Rams.

Week15
@
They don’t come better then this. Both team is only considered outsiders to make the playoffs this season but you don’t get a rivalry much better then this. The first three seasons gives the Redskins a 4-2 advantage. But don’t count out Dallas as their team is now starting to come together.

Week 16
@
First time these two giants go head to head. The Colts is still under control of Tom Brady but this year will be his first without his big target Marvin Harrison. This is the second time we see the Eagles in eMNF this season. After game against Packers, Texans and Giants in the three previous weeks they will be happy when this game is over.

Week 17
@
New England will play Buffalo in the last game of the season. Last year Buffalo squished by the Patriots by winning the last three games of the season, leaving Buffalo out of the playoffs. It will be a surprise if this game is not highly important for both teams when we reach week 17. Buffalo has won 4 of the 6 previous games in this rivalry.

Pre-season Free Agency Round 8-9 2006
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Free Agency Round 8-9

San Francisco did try to sign Joe Horn in FA. It was a rather weak attempt and nobody in San Francisco really thought it would work. The 49ers front office offered him a 1-year deal without any signing bonus worth $3.49mil. As expected that was not enough to convince him to play in San Francisco. Instead he decided to sign a 1-year deal with New England. They offered him a $5.0mil signing bonus and a $1.5mil salary. He will be the second most expensive player in New England only behind Ty Law ($7.47mil in cap cost). If San Francisco don’t want to put all their money on picking a WR in the draft their options is now down to Rod Smith or Ike Hilliard.

In another surprise move San Francisco also put in an offer to 2003 eMVP RB Curtis Martin. He turned down contract-offers from both San Francisco and Buffalo and signed a 2-year deal with Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh are in a desperate need of a new RB after the retirement of Jerome Bettis and Martin looks to have a fair chance to win the starting job in Pittsburgh this season. The Steelers will not draft until #20 and that might be to late to get any of the three-standout running backs in this year’s draft. Curtis Martin has had seasons of 302yds, 2167yds and 0yds rushing in his three years in the eNFL. That’s still good enough to give him the eNFL single season rushing record.

The future of CB Ahmed Plummer is also now decided. Seven different teams (not SFO) tried to sign him. Plummer went with the cheapest contract with the lowest number of years when he signed a 2-year $10mil contract with the Colts. Only $0.5mil is bonus money. The Colts now has four very competent corners under contract for the coming season.

Other Free Agency News Round 8-9
Houston has started the hard work to re-work the contracts with some of all their new star players but it might be more work when expected. The Texans offered new contracts to 12 players including Marvin Harrison and Terrell Owens but all of them was turned down. With only $180.000 left under the cap and 35 players under contract Houston have to solve this problem fast.

Three other teams must also start to re-work contract to get enough cap-space to be able to sign their draft-picks. Green Bay moved up to #12 in a trade with the Jets. That gives them $2mil in cap to clearer to get draft picks under contract. Oakland and Kansas have the same problems.

Tommy Maddox has signed a 1-year contract with San Diego.

LT Mark Dixon will now play for his 4th team in just as many years. He has previous played for MIA, STL and IND but have now signed a 2-year deal with New England.

New England also signed a contract with CB Terry Cousin this week.

Pre-season Free Agency Round 10-12 2006
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Free Agency Round 10-12

There is still seven weeks left in FA but in reality its now over and everybody is only waiting for the draft to start. With the talent if FA almost non-existing most teams have decided to wait until after the draft to fill up their rosters and are now only scrambling to get in possession for the draft. Most teams will spend the next few weeks getting ready for the draft by releasing players that don’t have a chance to make the team next season and by trying to renegotiate big contracts to make more room under the cap.

San Francisco have made an offer to WR Karl Williams. He has played for Tampa Bay and Dallas but has only started 10 games the last three years. If he decides to sign for the 49ers he will also be a nice backup for Jimmy Williams as a punt-returner.

2006 Draft

In this years draft San Francisco have three draft picks in the first two rounds. San Francisco’s first pick in this years draft will be #23. That pick was part of the Steve Hutchinsons-deal with Denver where Denver received the 49ers #5 pick. It’s not a secret that the 49ers are looking to draft WR Graham Leskanic with their first round pick. The question is of cause if he will still be around at #23 as most experts have predict. A possible solution is for San Francisco to try to move up to 15-20 in the draft by trading the #23 pick and their 3rd round pick (#69). Such a deal will properly not be made before the draft has started. If San Francisco doesn’t manage to draft Graham Leskanic in round 1 they will properly wait until round two and draft WR Martin Harris instead. Both players’ looks like big gambles with high Vol-ratings.

San Francisco’s second pick in this years draft will be in the beginning of the second round at #37. This will be a terrific spot to pick up players that was expected to be drafted in the first round but are now dropping on the teams draft boards. San Francisco believes that they can get great value at this point of the draft. The 49ers have not decided on any names or positions but will most likely draft the best player available at this point.

The second pick in round two is at #51. That is one of the picks received in the Terrell Owens deal with Houston. Souses in San Francisco say that the team already have a name locked on to that pick. The souse go on to say that one of agent BJ McDonalds players was in San Francisco last week for a private work-out and that the coaches liked what the saw.

Pre-season Free Agency Round 13-16 2006
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Free Agency Round 13-16

San Francisco decided to spend some of the cap-money made available by the Owens-trade to sign SS Tony Parrish to a new contract. Tony is a 9-year veteran who was drafted by Chicago Bears with the 5th pick in the second round in the 1998 draft. He has played all three eNFL seasons with San Francisco 49ers and was now in the last year of his contract. San Francisco signed a new 3-year deal worth $13.22mil with $2.8mil in signing bonus. This contract will hopefully keep Tony Parrish in San Francisco for the rest of his carer. He was one of highest rated 49ers players still without a contract for next year. San Francisco currently have 29 players under contract for next season

WR Karl Williams decided on Minnesota instead of San Francisco when he signed a 2-year deal with the Vikings this week. That means that the 49ers have still not signed one single player in FA this year and is in desperate need of a WR.

Who will be the #1 pick?

With the draft now only a few weeks away the speculation on who will be the #1 pick this year has started. The two last years CBs has been drafted first in the eNFL. In 2004 Carolina drafted CJ Ribich and last year Miami traded up to grab Darryl Murphy. Both players have developed nicely and will be super stars in the eNFL in year’s to come.

This year the focus has changed from CB to DE. The two-standout players in this years draft are Christian Roberts and Ethan Ford. One of these two players will be drafted first this year by Tennessee or whoever decides to trade up for the #1 spot. We will take a look at the two players and try to pick the #1 selection in the 2006 eNFL draft.
Code:
Christian Roberts Name Ethan Ford Sallisaw, Oklahoma Home town Ogden, Utah Illinois College Missouri 6-4 Height 6-4 273 Weight 271 9-6-1982 Born 5-6-1983 45 Current estimate 46 83 Future estimate 81 7.7 Grade 7.6 8.5 Adjst 8.4 4.72(*) Dash 4.64 (*) 33(*) Sole 26 39(*) Strg 44 (*) 6.97(*) Agil 7.27(*) 76 Volatilty 24 54% % developed 56%
(*) Above average for DE

A closer look at the scouting reports will show that Christian Roberts has a small problem with pass rush strength while Ethan Ford is lacking some endurance.

The team picking second in this years draft (Redskins) will be happy that they don’t have to make a choice and can never be second guessed if they made the right choice. These two players are almost impossible to separate. The differences in their stats are so small that it’s not possible to tell who will turn out to be the better player. The only major difference is found in the volatility rating and that’s what we think will make the difference. We think the Titans will make the “safe” pick and select Ethan Ford because of his low Vol-rate. But it will all come down to how the Titans scout Antonio Alfaro ranks the two players and how Titans GM xpusherx sees the players.

Good luck to the Titans…

And now let the draft begin.

Will Graham Leskanic still be around at #23?

A worry has started to spread in San Francisco after the two mock drafts released the day before the start of the eNFL 2006 daft shows that WR Graham Leskanic will not be around when the 49ers get ready to pick at #23. Leskanic has been the 49ers number one target since they traded Terrell Owens to Houston in FA.

Graham Leskanic is ranked as the best WR and 17th best player overall in this years draft, but early on most experts had him dropping due to his high vol-rate (98). That has changed now when he in the latest two mock drafts released is projected to go at #12 (GBY) and #21 (IND). That would be a hard blow to the 49ers plans and force them to move up in the draft or put their luck on another high vol (95) WR like Martin Harris.

A person we talked to from the 49ers front office had the following to say:

Quote
We don’t think he will be taken at #12 by Green Bay. The Packers already have two very good WR under contract. FL Donald Driver have been voted All-League 1st Team WR in all three seasons in the eNFL and SE Robert Ferguson had his best season as a Packer last year. I just don’t believe that Green Bay moved that fare up in the draft (from 30 to 12) and then make a big gamble on a 98-vol WR. I think they have their eyes other places.

Indianapolis cannot afford to take a WR with their first pick this year. They must take a G as the Yabanic 2006 mock draft very rightly points out. The Colts don’t have any guards under contract and the late FA will not help them much.

When that is said there is still a chance that Leskanic will not be around when we get to pick at #23. If the teams from 15-22 draft for best available player instead of need and are ready to take a gamble on a high Vol player we can be in trouble. We just don’t think it will be Green Bay or Indianapolis spoiling our day.
End Quote

Ethan Ford the #1 pick

In the top end of the draft it now looks settled that Ethan Ford will be the #1 pick. He has been the first player taken in all mock drafts released this year and is ranked the better player by most experts. That will be difficult for the Titans to ignore and they will be second-guessed all year long if they go with Christian Roberts instead. With the Redskins picking the other DE the real question is now who will go 3rd. That pick belongs to Dallas Cowboys and is a bit more open. Dallas has made very strong first round picks in the last 4 years.
Who will be the next in this great line of players?
Code:
2002: FS Roy Williams (Round 1, Pick 8, 85/85 and 2005 All-League 1st Team S) 2003: CB Terence Newman (Round 1, Pick 5, 94/94) 2004: LG Perry Dunkin (Round 1, Pick 6, 61/80) 2005: RB Ed Newsome (Round 1, Pick 9, 56/60 and last years offensive rookie of the year) 2006: ?

You must have something up your sleeve to be spelling out your draft strategy so blatantly. Or is this meant to throw people off who you're really looking at?? I guess we'll know by sunday night..

SF definitely needs a nother wide receiver. I just don't see Leskanic falling to #23. He might not go to GB at #12, but he's the best rated WR in a weak WR class and therefore is definitely a hot commodity. Last year three WRs were drafted in the first 20 picks. If you compare Laskanic to those three I think Leskanic fares pretty well:

(current/future, 40 time, agility, strength, volatility, drafted)

Leskanic.....31/63, 4.43, 6.85, 14, 98 vol, drafted ?
Gerhardt.....27/63, 4.45, 7.09, 16, 30 vol, drafted #10
Blades........29/55, 4.39, 7.14, 23, 98 vol, drafted #18
Strong........33/58, 4.42, 7.00, 13, 73 vol, drafted #20

Leskanic is the second fastest WR in this year's draft (tied for third best time overall) and has the best agility score of any player in this or last year's draft. Blades had the same 98 vol and my scout shows him to have improved to 41/58 after one season as a third wide receiver. In contrast, my scout shows Gerhardt at 36/62 after starting 8 games. This is why I think Leskanic will go fairly high. He has high volatility, but his great combine performance makes that less of a concern to me.

It will be interesting to find out what happens. Dallas has drafted for need the last two years. I wouldn't be surprised if they take CB Adrian Bertrand at #3 even though I had them taking DT Bob Bush. I also think there's a good chance they take WR Martin Harris if he's still around at the 2(3) pick.

Good luck in the draft, Northwood. Thanks for all the great analysis and reports.

eNFL 2006 draft

Welcome to the coverage of the eNFL 2006 draft. We will follow the draft as is unfolds and try to cover every pick and trade made in the first round. We will also try to get comments from the different GMs when they have made their picks.

The order of the first 10 teams currently looks like this:

1) TEN, 2) WAS, 3) DAL, 4) CHI, 5) JAX (from DEN via SFO), 6) OAK (from ARI), 7) SEA, 8) DEN (from JAX via CAR), 9) DET and 10) CIN.

This will properly change several times before the first 10 picks are made. At the moment only 11 teams have not moved one or more picks in this years draft. The teams’ still having all there own picks is Kansas, Phili, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Minnesota, Cincinnati, Chicago, Dallas, Washington and Tennessee.

But now lets get ready for the first pick in the 2006 eNFL draft. Tennessee is on the clock and now it’s only to wait.

With the #1 overall pick in the 2006 draft Tennessee Titans select DE Ethan Ford from Missouri

Coment: This was expected. This has been coverd in all the mock drafts and can not be a surprise to anybody. A solid pick that will give the Titans one of the strongest D-lines in the eNFL with Ford, Kearse, Long and Hampton

eNFL 2006 draft

The first round of the eNFL 2006 draft is now over. We will take a closer look at some of the things going on behind the scene in the first round. Hopefully we can also print the excellent first round draft report by Commissioner TredWel later today.

The first 5 picks didn’t see any surprises. Jacksonville made a last minute deal with Denver to move up in the draft and used the pick to take the 3rd best player in this year’s draft.

1 Tennessee Titans LDE Ethan Ford
2 Washington Redskins LDE Christian Roberts
3 Dallas Cowboys RDT Bob Bush
4 Chicago Bears RB J.J. Rose
5 Jacksonville Jaguars FS Clarence Schwartz

A few experts have been surprised that Oakland moved up in the draft to grab FS Sammie Floyd. He was the 5th highest ranked player in the draft and with him taken the 6 highest ranked players in the draft was all taken off the board.
The Raiders GM Yabanci had the following comment to the pick.

Quote Yabanci
I love this safety I drafted. My scout's initial impression shows him with potential 100 run defense, 85 m2m, 100 b&r, and 91 int. He's pretty raw though. Hopefully he'll fulfill this potential. He could be a big playmaker.
End quote

6 Oakland Raiders FS Sammie Floyd
7 Seattle Seahawks SIL Derek Wallace
8 Denver Broncos LCB Adrian Bertrand
9 Detroit Lions LT Roger Durham
10 Cincinnati Bengals LG Ernest Goodwin

Cincinnati GM Mojo Jojo had the following comment to their first round pick.

Quote Mojo Jojo
my first pick was to address my left tackle situation. Either Goodwin or Steinbach will be moved over there (whichever one makes the transition better...)
Either way, Goodwin will be starting on opening day...
End quote

11 Minnesota Vikings C Will Appleberry
12 Green Bay Packers MLB Trent Dirita
13 San Diego Chargers C Gene Conway
14 Miami Dolphins SE Graham Leskanic

As expected was Graham Leskanic long gone when it finally was San Francisco’s time to pick in the 2006 eNFL draft. Leskanic was picked up by Miami with the 14th overall pick. A great pick by Miami who can definitely need some help next to Chris Chambers.

A person working close to the 49ers front office had the following to say when it became clearer that Leskanic would not end up in Red&Gold.

Quote
We must admit that we hoped that Graham Leskanic would fall to us at #23 but didn’t really expect it. We have worked hard the last couple of days trying to talk him down in the draft. We have taken every opportunity to point out his 98 Vol rate and that he was only ranked as #17. It didn’t work and there is nothing we can do about it. Several teams simply called our bluff.
Right after Graham Leskanic was drafted we did receive a call from Miami Dolphins offering a trade. We offered our pick at #23 together with our second round pick next year. Of cause that was not was Miami was looking for and the deal never worked out.
End quote

15 Cleveland Browns LDT Dwayne Stevens
16 Carolina Panthers LCB Kenyon Mason
17 New England Patriots RT John Garnes

New England picked the second best T in the draft and had the following comment.

Quote Doug5984
....a calculated risk. I think he will turn out to be a solid pick, and with the complete lack of talent at my OT position this season he should be able to move in and start right away (not play well, but start)...And the deciding factor for me to pick him over a RB was having a mentor at Tackle, to help him develop faster, while a RB would be only situational this season.
End quote

18 New York Giants SS Phil Hansen
19 Tampa Bay Buccaneers RDE Brant Chatman
20 Pittsburgh Steelers RB J.J. Kobdish
21 Indianapolis Colts LG Kurt Porras
22 Arizona Cardinals QB Calvin Hess
23 San Francisco 49ers FL Martin Harris

Quote Northwood_dk
We are glad to have drafted Martin Harris. Some will see this as a reach but we feel that we didn’t have any choice. Martin Harris has played his college football at UCLA and we have seen him play a number of times and feel that he can add to our team. We must have a new WR and Martin was ranked as the 34th best player in the draft and we couldn’t take the chance that he would be gone at our next pick #37. We did receive an offer to move down to #27 in a trade with Denver. That looked like a good deal that could have given us an extra late round pick. But everything happened so fast that we didn’t have time to put the deal together before our pick was announced.
End quote

24 Baltimore Ravens RG Ken Rountree
25 St. Louis Rams LDT Jared Sanderson
26 Philadelphia Eagles LCB Everett Barraza
27 Denver Broncos LDE Wayne Goodwin
28 Arizona Cardinals QB Jamie Wallace
29 Cincinnati Bengals LCB Spencer Briggs
30 New Jersey Jets RB Norman Greer

The biggest reach in the first round was by Kansas. They went with 133 ranked SS Jerald Emerson.

31 Kansas City Chiefs SS Jerald Emerson
32 Minnesota Vikings RCB Josh Barnes

With permission from the Commissioner of the eNFL. This I the official eNFL first round draft report by TredWel.

1 - Tennessee - DE Ethan Ford - Missouri

Talent: Very high, among the top two DE's in the draft. Christian Roberts is rated a little higher, but Ethan Ford is more the sure thing. In this place, I would have taken Roberts, as his great combine scores should allay fears of a sudden bust. Still, you can't be unhappy with either end, both are rated as '5-star' recruits.

Need: Tennessee's line is among the best in the league, with Ford projected to start in a line of Ford - Hampton - Long - Kearse. Defensive Line was not a priority after the pickup of Casey Hampton in the offseason, but the choice was either take one of the two stud DE's, or trade down a few spots and take G Ernest Goodwin or T Roger Durham and possibly help the offensive line.

Grade: B+

2 - Washington - DE Christian Roberts - Illinois

Talent: Very High, rated the best overall player in the draft. Like I said above, a few questions about his volatility, but his combine should mean that he should stay at this level, maybe even improve, especially with the help of mentor Renaldo Wynn. Scary thought, I know.

Need: This pick was a godsend. The projected starting defensive ends this season were Renaldo Wynn, who missed the majority of the season to injury. and Regan Upshaw, who recorded 10 sacks each of the last three years, but looking like time is catching up to him. Sticking Roberts in there will shore up that position quickly.

Grade: A

3 - Dallas - DT Bob Bush - Tennessee Chattanooga

Talent: The best DT in the draft, but only the third best defensive lineman. Low volatility and good but not great combine scores means meeting his potential should be a safe bet.

Need: Bush joins a crowded Defensive Tackle position. La'Roi Glover has a lock on the LDT spot, and it looked like it would be a struggle between the former Cardinal Russell Davis and the previous starter Vince Holland for the RDT starting role. Time may tell if Bush does start there, or gets moved to defensive end, where there is a definite need.

Grade: B

4 - Chicago - RB J.J. Rose - Air Force

Talent: Best offensive player in this season's draft. Has a 70 Volatility score, but strong test scores and speed, along with above average numbers everywhere else, means that Rose may actually become more talented as his career progresses.

Need: Chicago had an anemic rushing attack last season, and couldn't improve it in free agency. Look for Rose to start from day one, and earn the Rookie of the Year Award.

Grade: A+

5 - Jacksonville Jaguars - S Clarence Schwartz - Auburn

Talent: Top player on the board, and best secondary player coming into the draft. Had a very interesting combine, as he scored way above average in every drills, but only scored an average test score.

Need: With Houston in their division, the Jaguars apparently thought it necessary to get more help in the secondary. So, they moved up three spots to take the best safety in the draft. Their cornerbacks are both coming off of very good seasons but the safety position has a logjam of good - but not great - players. Schwartz should start this season. Still, I wonder if they needed to trade up - if Schwartz would have dropped to the 8 spot anyway. At the very least, you can pick up Sammie Floyd at eight, who will be good, if not better, than Schwartz.

Grade: B-

6 - Oakland Raiders - S Sammie Floyd - Penn State

Talent: Second rated safety on the board, but top potential. Excellent combine scores. Even with a slight question with his 30 volatility, I wouldn't be surprised to see him reach his potential.

Need: Oakland is in an odd spot here. They could reach and select Derek Wallace or Graham Leskanic and try to fill their needs a bit better, or trade down and see what develops, but they instead stay12 - and take the best available at #6. He'll either ride the pine behind a bunch of solid safeties, or get moved to corner.

Grade: B

7 - Seattle Seahawks - ILB Derek Wallace - Tulsa

Talent: Best linebacker available. Slightly above average combine as a whole, though his agility scores look a little on the down side. That and a middling volatility could make this pick slightly risky. Ranked #15 overall, but the Seahawks must've saw something in him to take him in the top seven.

Need: Orlando Huff wasn't getting the job done in the middle for the Seahawks, and Wallace could feasibly start, depending on how camp goes. He will be helped by Paris Lenon, an inside linebackers' mentor, assuming he makes the final squad.

Grade: B+

8 - Denver Broncos - CB Adrian Bertrand - Muskingum

Talent: Best true CB in the draft, though overshadowed by the pair of safeties taken at 5 and 6. Ranked #16 overall. Low volatility, low test scores, but rated extremely well in the physical side of things at the combine. He should turn out as a decent project and a good corner in a few years.

Need: Denver just needs breathing bodies at this point. The only corner under contract right now is spot starter Willie Middlebrooks. Bertrand might actually start from the beginning.

Grade: C

9 - Detroit Lions - T Roger Durham - Baylor

Talent: Best offensive lineman in the draft. Almost a sure thing, with a 1 volatility score. This is a good thing, since he comes into the league less developed than the average tackle. He had a good combine.

Need: Detroit picked up journeyman Orlando Brown in the offseason, but he, Billy Joe Newsome, and Todd Wade aren't going to be mistaken for elite lineman in this league. Durham may not start immediately, but he'll be thrown into the mix, and eventually rise to the top at the position.

Grade: B+

10 - Cincinnati Bengals - G Ernest Goodwin - Hawaii

Talent: Best guard, and tied for best offensive lineman in the draft. High volatility, but rated well at every stop at the combine. Cincinnati's taking a risk, but they should be well rewarded here.

Need: Eric Steinbach is a monster at Left Guard, and Orlando Hanson is going to take the position of seat-warmer for Goodwin. Look for Hanson to start the year at the RG spot, but either be replaced midseason, or moved in the offseason to make room for Goodwin.

Grade: B+

11 - Minnesota Vikings - C Will Appleberry - Maryland

Talent: Second center, #16 overall. Excellent Combine, but is a bit underdeveloped for a center in this league. That, and a 40 volatility rating may make the Vikings sweat a little. Minnesota was a bit late for the party, but still took an excellent talent.

Need: Not a need at all, surprising for a team of 24 players. Matt Birk is an excellent center, and shouldn't need to be replaced for 4 or 5 seasons. They may move him into a guard slot, where they do need help, but I think they should have taken either Dwayne Stevens or Jared Sanderson.

UPDATE: With Birk traded in a package for the 32nd pick, Appleberry becomes a more important fixture on the Vikings' line. He probably will start from day one. I still don't like the pick, however.

Grade: C-

12 - Green Bay Packers - ILB Trent Dirita - Wayne State

Talent: Second on the list of middle linebackers, #18 overall. Had a monster combine, registering well on all four metrics. The only question marks are a high volatility and less development than the average linebacker. We'll see if his raw talents mature into a stud linebacker.

Need: This was a need pick. Right now the starting spot at MLB in the Packers' 4-3 defense, is going to be either Don Davis or Carlos Polk, neither of whom look to be the long term solution there. Dirita will probably get a year backing those players up, and then break out next season.

Grade: A-

13 - San Diego Chargers - C Gene Conway - Chadron State

Talent: His physical skills are unmatched. Combine scores are off the charts, and only a 26 for volatility. The only major question mark is his current ability. It will take time to make up the massive difference between the current ability and future potential, but barring injury or other happenings, Conway could become the best center in the league. Ranked #10 overall, 3rd best O-lineman, and best center.

Need: The Chargers' top need may very well be a Center. It will be a toss up whether last year's 4th round pick Will Becher or Conway makes the majority of the snaps this season.

Grade: B+

14 - Miami Dolphins - WR Graham Leskanic - Ohio State

Talent: Top wide receiver in the draft. #17 overall. Another player whose physical combine scores are off the charts. However, he is of average intelligence, and that 98 Volatility rating may make the Dolphins sweat a little bit.

Need: An absolute need pick. The Dolphins have 3 WRs under contract, and only Chris Chambers is a viable threat. Unless there is a trade or a late pickup, Leskanic should start immediately.

Grade: A-

15. Cleveland Browns - DT Dwayne Stevens - Miami, Florida

Talent: Top ten talent, but he slips here (actually to 25th, as the Browns were late to the party as well). Excellent combine scores, which is probably allaying the Browns' fears of a bust, with his 81 volatility rating.

Need: Not much of a need here. They are stocked on the defensive line. But there isn't much immediate help left in the draft at this point, and they drafted best available.

Grade: B+

16. Carolina Panthers - CB Kenyon Mason - Tennessee

Talent: Something of a reach, as he was #25 overall on the draft board, but he was the best corner and defensive back left in the draft. Overall a very fine combine, above average in everything, but an 81 volatility score may put his future in doubt. The Panthers are hoping he gets better, not worse.

Need: Mason may start aside of former #1 C.J. Ribich. They only had 2 corners under contract before drafting him. He was probably their biggest need coming from the top of the board down at this point, since they don't need help at DE, DT, RB, or T.

Grade: B

17. New England Patriots - T John Garnes - Mississippi State

Talent: A calculated risk. Garnes has a 62 Volatility rating, but great intelligence, speed, and strength from the Tackle position. The only question mark is current ability, as he comes into the league not being able to start for most teams. But there is an amazing amount of upside potential to this pick.

Need: It's a pick for need as well, but not immediate need. Unfortunately, I think New England missed here. They could have taken RB Norman Greer here, and picked up a solid playmaker at a need position. While Garnes may start immediately, it's a better chance that he's mired with a large pool of mediocre tackles next season. At least he's got the chance to learn from Todd Stuessie, which will help his development.

Grade: C+

18. New York Giants - S Phil Hansen - Missouri

Talent: #27 overall, #3 on the list of safeties, after the two that went #5 and #6 overall. An absolute stud at the combine, his performance there probably moved him into the first round. He'll need a few years preparing for the game, but look for him to be a great defensive back.

Need: They have a pair of aging but star safeties in Shaun Williams and Omar Stoutmire. Hansen could either wait and take up the position from Stoutmire when his contract is up in two years, or they can move him to corner, where there is a dearth of talent.

Grade: B

19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - RDE Brant Chatman - LSU

Talent: #11 overall falls to Tampa. He's got good, raw, physical talent, but there are a few causes for concern. 48 Volatility, average intelligence, and less than average current ratings means that Tampa may be taking a chance here. If Chatman can live up to his billing, though, he'll be haunting quarterbacks for plenty of years to come.

Need: The Buccs only have two Defensive Ends on their roster right now, the solid DeWayne White, and the not so solid Greg Spires. Chatman may not challenge for playing time just yet, but if he develops, he could replace Spires next season.

Grade: B

20. Pittsburgh Steelers - RB J.J. Kobdish - Memphis

Talent: The third best running back on the board. The Steelers passed over higher rated Norman Greer for the lower-volatility Kobdish. Kobdish has excellent physical skills, and good intelligence as well. A solid value at #20.

Need: They lost Jerome Bettis in the offseason. While they picked up Curtis Martin in Free Agency, he's not the back he used to be. Kobdish could probably start from day one.

Grade: A-

21. Indianapolis Colts - LG Kurt Porras - Florida

Talent: The best Offensive Lineman on the board, but maybe a bit of a reach at #30. Good physical skills and good development are pros, but the questionable intelligence and the 53 volatility are cons.

Need: Indianapolis right now have zero guards on their roster. Zip. Zilch. Nada. Porras may not have the skills yet to become a good Guard in this league, but he's most likely going to be thrown right into the fire.

Grade: B

22. Arizona Cardinals - QB Calvin Hess - Alabama

Talent: Rated the best Quarterback in the league. Low volatility, good head on his shoulders, decent strength and agility. Unfortunately, he put up a 5.09 in the 40, which is a big blemish on his record. Don't expect him to scramble much.

Need: We're looking at a team helmed by former Falcon backup and 6th round pick Jack Bajwa. Whether Hess will become the QB of the future is up in the air.

Grade: C+

23. San Francisco 49ers - FL Martin Harris - UCLA

Talent: A big number on volatility - 95. Still, he's coming in as a "5-star" recruit - above average in every physical, mental, and developmental category. He may become better, but he probably won't become worse. Rated #38 overall, a slight reach here. San Fran may be gambling on the AAA principle with this pick. If he breaks out, this could be THE pick of the first round.

Need: They've got Dennis Northcutt, and not much else. He'll probably factor into the offense from day one, if not as a starter but as a viable option on third down.

Grade: A-

24. Baltimore Ravens - RG Ken Rountree - Clemson

Talent: The second best guard on the board, ranked slightly below Lance Cook, probably picked here because of his 87 volatility and absolutely excellent combine. He's got less than average development, usually a warning sign. Still, it wouldn't surprise me to see Rountree improve a bit.

Need: Last year's first round pick, Darrell Fewell, is the only quality guard on the Ravens' roster. While they have enough bodies, Rountree is a welcome addition, and could play a key role on that line in the years to come.

Grade: B

25. St. Louis Rams - LDT Jared Sanderson – Wake Forest

Talent: On the board, he's the 12th best player. He's got good physical skills, but he's dumb as a rock. 44 volatility, and less than average development means that he may not be all that he's cracked up to be. A good value pick, he may end up being a late-first round talent after all.

Need: Probably won't start. They've got a good DT in Damione Lewis, and a passable DT in Brian Young. They needed bodies to back them up, so Sanderson probably won't be under any pressure to perform immediately.

Grade: B

26. Philadelphia Eagles - LCB Everett Barraza – Willamette

Talent: Mark this pick down. I'm predicting Barraza to be the sleeper of this draft. He's got great speed and agility, even for a cornerback. He's much stronger than the average cornerback as well. He's coming into this league at almost half developed. All this - and a 99 volatility rating. The only question mark is his test score, which didn't impress anybody. Still, if he can learn the defenses of the Eagles, look for him to become a star under the mentorship of Bobby Taylor.

Need: They have a slight need for another cornerback, with Harvey Foster and Lito Sheppard battling for the #2 spot behind Bobby Taylor. Barraza does not figure to join that battle, and looks to start as a dime back.

Grade: B+

27. Denver Broncos - LDE Wayne Goodwin - Butler

Talent: Wayne Goodwin is another "5-star" player, with all indicators better than the average DE. That should allay the fears of Denver regarding his 31 volatility, which is low but not low enough to ignore.

Need: Like I said earlier, Denver just needs bodies at this point. The only defensive end that Denver has under contract is undrafted third year man Alfred McSweeny. Goodwin right now is just about as good as McSweeny will ever be.

Grade: A

28. Arizona Cardinals - QB Jamie Wallace - Washington

Talent: The second QB to go this round, and the second to go to Arizona. The good news is that he's a fine physical specimen, and much more developed than the average QB. The bad news is that he's not the brightest bulb, something you need your quarterback to be.

Need: Arizona does not need another young quarterback. I'd place him as the starter now, and the player for the future, but where does that leave Calvin Hess?

Grade: D

29. Cincinnati Bengals - LCB Spencer Briggs – North Texas

Talent: Another "5-star" player. The best corner left on the board. He's got good smarts, good physical skills, and comes into the league well developed. He also comes in with a middling volatility that the Bengals hope means that he'll improve, not decrease his skills.

Need: The Bengals need cornerbacks. Neither Anthony Henry or Antoine Winfield have the skills to keep up with the elite Wide Receivers of the league. Briggs will probably come in, play the nickel to start, and move into the starting role next season.

Grade: A-

30. New Jersey Jets - RB Norman Greer – Kansas State

Talent: A top 15 talent that somehow dropped to the end of the round, and even saw a running back rated low taken before him. He's got volatility issues and development issues, but he had a fine combine and should be a very good running back in this league.

Need: Their current back is Michael Bennett, who has rushed for over 1200 yards each of the last two seasons for the Jets. Whether Bennett will continue to start of sit for Greer remains to be determined, as the scouts see Greer as nearly Bennett's equal.

Grade: B-

31. Kansas City Chiefs - SS Jerald Emerson – Florida State

Talent: Emerson was ranked #117 overall, and #11 in a deep safety pool. However, he had a smashing combine, with mental and physical numbers off the charts. He's also above average in development. The Chiefs hope that Emerson's volatility of 3 doesn't hinder his breakout ability. Despite the combine ratings, this is still quite a reach. Let's hope James Trapp's affect on him is palpable.

Need: Well, if he stays the way he is, he's not going to ever beat the combination of Jerome Woods and Desmond Wolfe that start for KC right now. Woods is an 11-year veteran, so they might be angling to replace Woods with Emerson.

Grade: C-

32. Minnesota Vikings - CB Josh Barnes - Bowie State

Talent: Minnesota traded up for this pick, and I hope they know what they're doing. Barnes has excellent physical skills, but a low test score plus low development, plus a 35 volatility means that Barnes may not reach his expected peak.

Need: They have only one cornerback under contract, Denard Walker. Any help they could get back there is good for them, but Barnes is in no way ready to start in the NFL.

Grade: C

eNFL 2006 draft

The second round of the draft has now started and with the fifth pick (37 overall) San Francisco selected NT Rusty Webb. Rust was ranked the 25th best player in this years draft and was easily the best player still available. He will be the 3rd NT on the 49ers roster. Shane Davidson was picked by San Francisco in the second round in 2004 draft. He has never started a game but still looks like a player for the future. He only got one year left on his rookie contract. Last year San Francisco drafted another NT Roy Palmer in the 4th round. He still got 3 years left on his contract but with the draft of Rusty Webb his future on the team looks questionable.

San Francisco still got one more pick in the second round. The 51st overall pick belongs to San Francisco as a part of the Terrell Owens deal. GM Northwood confirms that they have a possible target for that pick.

Quote Northwood_dk
This picks feels like a bit of a bonus pick. We didn’t expect to get anything for Terrell Owens when his contract expired next year and now we have a second round pick. That gives us the opportunity to take a little more chances with this pick and we have found a player we really like. He is a bit of a reach at #51 but we are afraid that he will not be there when we draft in round 3 (69 overall). We will try to move the #51 pick to the end of the second round (60-64) and see if we can get him there.
End quote

With 11 picks already made in round two it will not take long before we know the name of the player San Francisco have their eyes on and if they manage to trade down to get him at the right spot.

Other draft news

Missouri was the only school with two players drafted in the first round this year. LDE Ethan Ford with the first overall pick and SS Phil Hansen drafted by New York Giants at # 18. Missouri only have two more players in this years draft ILB Jay Suszkowski and RB Cory Austin. They will properly stay un-drafted.

Cornerbacks were the most popular choice in the first round of this year’s draft. The first was taken by Denver at #8 but after that four more despaired of the draft board before the first round was over.

First round picks by position.
QB 2
RB 3
WR 2
C 2
G 3
T 2
DE 4
DT 3
ILB 2
CB 5
S 4

The avg score on the Sol-test for a player drafted in the first round this year was 31.25. That up from 2004 where the avg was 30.72.

San Francisco got their trade. In a close race to beat the deadline division rivals St Louis and San Francisco worked out a deal that moved the Rams up and 49ers down. St Louis GM Pyser used the pick to get WR Shawn Hitchcock. Now San Francisco can only wait and see if their target will still be around at #64.

In addition to the last pick in the second round the 49ers also got the Rams two picks in the 6th round (#178 and 192). This now gives San Francisco 4 picks in the 6th round.

GM Northwood had the following comment to the trade.

Quote Northwood_dk
We got the trade we wanted. The end of the second round is the perfect spot for our prospect. Its also gives us a total of eight more picks in the remaining draft that we can use to improve our roster. I’m know that St Louis got away with a cheep deal this time but given the time pressure I think we did OK.

The San Francisco front office just confirmed that their plan to trade down just backfired. Their target QB Gino Wagner was drafted by the Colts six picks before the 49ers turn. Wagner was only the 9th best-ranked QB in this years draft but some fantastic combine scores have impressed a lot of GMs around the league. San Francisco had hoped to draft Wagner and have him developing behind Jeff Garcia. That will now happen in Indianapolis instead where he will be second in the depth chart behind Tom Brady.

60 Indianapolis Colts SE Travis Dole
61 Cincinnati Bengals RCB Tito Zukowsky
62 New Jersey Jets QB Tommy Judy
63 Kansas City Chiefs LG Tom McCrory
64 San Francisco 49ers QB Jon Arnold

With the last pick in the second San Francisco picked QB Jon Arnold. The 4th best ranked QB in the draft will most likely be the second QB in the 49ers depth chart next season. Currently they only have Jeff Garcia and kick-holder Matt Atkinson under contract for next year. Harry Curtis that been second behind Jeff Garcia the last three years is without a contract this year and will not get it renewed this season. Arnold became the 5th Florida player taken in this years draft and also the 5th quarterback picked.

With Derrick Deese in his 13th season San Francisco decided to use therir 3 round pick (69 overall) to pick a posible replacment. The 5th best tackel in the draft Mickey Isaacson will have to fight for the backup spot this year with Carl Boyer. Isaacson did not impress at the combine with below avg results in both 40-dash and the Sol-test. San Francisco will hope his strength can help him develop in to a starter hopefully already next year.

eNFL 2006 Late FA week 1
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

eNFL 2006 draft

With the draft over its time to take a closer look at some of the facts and numbers. A total of 223 players were drafted this year from 111 different schools round the country. Florida and Notre Dame both had 8 players drafted this year. Tampa Bay only had one pick in this year’s draft. They picked DE Brant Chatman with the 19 overall pick in the draft. Houston had two picks and St Louis three. In the other end you find San Francisco with 11 picks in this years draft.

A total of 19 quarterbacks were drafted this year. Arizona (B+) was the only team to draft a QB in the first round. They actually drafted two play callers in the first round and now have 5 quarterbacks on their roster. Indianapolis (A+) the only team in this years draft with an A also drafted 2 quarterback this year while Atlanta (B) drafted a quarterback in both round 5, 6 and 7.

17 rookie running backs were drafted in 2006. Chicago (B) took JJ Rose already at #4. Seattle (B-) and Washington (B) both drafted two running backs this year.

The lowest ranked player drafted this year was FB J.C. Burdick with an adjusted rating of 2.4. Chicago drafted him in the 7th round. Only 9 FBs was drafted in total.

Tight Ends was not a strong position this year. Only 5 drafted with the first going off the board in the start of the 3rd round drafted by Chicago.

Miami (C+) drafted the first of a total of 19 WRs at #14 overall. The Eagles (B) and 49ers (C+) both drafted two wide receivers this year.

32% of all Centers in this years draft were picked with two of them going as early as first round.

17 guards and 17 tackles found a team to play for, but only 4 of them were drafted in the first round. The Jets (C+) drafted 4 tackles and now has 8 tackles on their roster. Mr Irrelevant is also found here. St Louis drafted G Ross Pinkerton with the last pick in this year’s draft.

No one but New England (B-) cared for punters and kickers this year. Only 4 were drafted with the Patriots adding both a P and K to their roster.

DE was the strongest position in this year’s draft. The two first picks by Tennessee (B+) and Washington were both DE and a total of 4 were taken in the first round. Green Bay (B), Saints (C+) and San Francisco were the only teams to take two defensive ends. Tampa Bay (C+) used their only pick in this years draft here. A total of 19 were drafted. The Eagles looks to have been lucky with 3rd round pick Harris Gonzalez.

Also 19 Dt werer drafted. Denver (C+) used three of their nine picks on this position. Carolina (B+) will be very satisfied with their 5th round pick RDT Shane Newhart who looks to be one of the big booms of this year’s draft.

Only 11 ILB got drafted and only three in the first two rounds. 18% of the drafted ILB came from Notre Dame.

No OLB were taken in round one. TE, FB, P and K were the only other positions without a first round pick. Cincinnati (B), Kansas (B-) and Minnesota (C-) all took two OLB of the total of 15 that were drafted.

Cornerbacks were popular once again in the eNFL. 5 were taken alone in the first round and it didn’t stop until 21 cornerbacks were drafted.

It’s possible that most teams have strong safeties already but it didn’t stop them from drafting 19 more. Kansas made the biggest reach this year when they drafted the 130 ranked player in the draft SS Jerald Emerson as #31 overall.

Contract holdouts

Three players as informed their teams that they will not show up in training camp before they have received a new and better contract.

RB Kevin Faulk, New England Patriots
Kevin Faulk is an 8-year veteran in his last year of his contract with the Pats. This year his current contract will only give him $930.000. Last year he was the starter for New England and gained 1515yds rushing. The Pats has close to $7.0mil left under the cap and can afford to pay him but the question is if they want to. Kevin Faulk doesn’t look like the long-term solution to the Pats running back problem. Can this be what it takes to get New England to finally solve the problem long term?

RB Justin Fargas, Oakland Raiders
Once again an Oakland player is holding out. Fargas has two years left on his rookie contract but now demands more money. The $920.000 is not enough for the Raiders starting running back. The problem for Oakland is that they have very limited possibilities to act under the salary-cap. The only have $830.000 left and that’s before they even start signing rookie contracts. Expect Oakland to play it cool and play the waiting game with Justin Fargas.

San Francisco 49ers 2006 Draft Evaluations

1-23 (23 overall) FL Martin Harris
Draft: 25/54; Pre-camp: 28/52; Post: xx/xx

Martin Harris was a draft for need. With TO no longer in San Francisco a new partner for Dennis Northcutt was a desperate need. The 49ers hoped for Graham Leskanic to drop but were aware from the beginning that Harris was the likely choice. Martin Harris played football with UCLA and play hard to win and is not afraid to go after the ball. He is small (5-10, 186) but incredible strong (20 rep). He doesn’t drop a lot of balls and have good hands. He runs solid routs but need to work on getting down field. His lack of experience also holds him back in big-play-receiving and 3rd-down-catching. That is hopefully something he can work with in training camp. San Francisco will follow his every move in camp closely to see how his 95 Vol works out for him. 54% developed he will definitely see a lot of action already this year. Expect him to play all pre-season games and battle with Brandon Lloyd for the place next to Northcutt in the first game of the season.

2-5 (37 overall) NT Rusty Webb
Draft: 33/56; Pre-camp: 33/54; Post: xx/xx

This was a draft of best available and he was the 3rd highest ranked player taken in the second round. Rusty was early on projected to go in the first round but was still available in the beginning of the second round. He was one of the strongest DT in the draft (33 rep) and is very smart. Three out of four of his combine scores was outstanding. He has tremendous pass rush strength but need to work on his technique. 60% developed and low Vol will gives him an edge in the fight for a place on the roster against Roy Palmer and Shane Davidson.

2-32 (64 overall) QB Jon Arnold
Draft: 11/46; Pre-camp: 12/45; Post: xx/xx

San Francisco traded down because they didn’t wanted to reach for QB Gino Wagner. They traded down a little to fare and Wagner was gone when the 49ers turn came up again. With only 1 real QB under contract (Matt Atkinson is the kick-holder) QB was a priority this year. The QB from Florida Jon Arnold plays his football with great accuracy and timing and is also good to avoid interceptions. He has his strength in short passes (0-20yds). He can read the defends and never goes out of the pocket. Only 24% developed he don’t have the arm-strength for the deep passes yet and also struggles with 3rd-down passing. He will see a lot of action in the pre-season so the 49ers can get a picture if his lack of speed and strength will keep him from being the next quarterback in San Francisco.

3-5 (69 overall) LT Mickey Isaacson
Draft: 12/53; Pre-camp: 12/49; Post: xx/xx

With only three tackles under contract and Derrick Deese soon ready for retirement San Francisco was in a hurry to find a possible replacement. If Mickey Isaacson is that solution we will have to wait a year or two to see as he is only 24% developed. From Iowa he comes with a good scouting report in all categories except endurance. He is big and strong (6-8, 334) and therefore not very fast. The training camp will show if he get the 3rd place in the depth chart or if he will be put on the inactive roster this season behind Deese, Harris and last year second round pick Carl Boyer

4-5 (101 overall) SLB Jonathan Peterson
Draft: 13/52; Pre-camp: 13/49; Post: xx/xx

Jonathan Peterson comes from Arizona as the 6th best OLB in this year’s draft. He had an excellent result in the Agil-test but not that good on the 40-dash. His other combine-tests were average. He struggles with the pass rush technique but is excellent defending against the run. He is only 25% developed but the 49ers hopes he can be the future backup for Julian Peterson.

5-5 (133 overall) FS Danny Farr
Draft: 19/45; Pre-camp: 19/42; Post: xx/xx

San Francisco has not drafted a CB this year and will most likely move Zack Bronson over to corner. With only Tony Parrish and Morris Strong under contract as safeties this was a draft for need. Danny Farr is big and strong but not very fast. From New Mexico he prefers to play bump and run and is not afraid to hit his man. Danny Farr can also be used as a return specialist.

6-5 (165 overall) DE Jerry Brazzell
Draft: 18/41; Pre-camp: 17/40; Post: xx/xx

With John Engelberger now in Seattle the 49ers was down to three DE under contract for this season. Jerry is the 13th best DE in this years draft and played college football with Penn State. Has very good rates in pass rush technique and run defense but must work a lot on his strength. If he can improve that and his play diagnosis he will have a fair chance to see some action this year.

6-18 (178 overall) FL Jorge Greer
Draft: 19/39; Pre-camp: 19/36; Post: xx/xx

The second receiver taken by San Francisco in this years draft. For a player taken in the middle of the 6th round Jorge Greer looks very good. He comes from the small school Stephen F. Austin and is another small receiver (5-7, 192). He got average speed but only managed 9 repetitions in the bench press. His scout report ranks him average all across the board with no real weaknesses and with special abilities in third-down-catching. With his arrival it looks like Arnaz Battle has dressed up as a 49er for the last time.

6-29 (189 overall) DE Hunter Tapley
Draft: 14/42; Pre-camp: 22/41; Post: xx/xx

Hunter Tapley first looked like a bust. He had good pass rush strength and can defend against the run. But that’s all he could do. When he first turned up in San Francisco and the coaches got a closer look at him they saw some potential. They upgraded his current rating from 14 to 22 and instead of releasing him San Francisco will now likely give him a chance and see if he can keep up the big improvement.
Two out of the three players that re-entered the draft this year has been given a second chance. C Blair Dixon was drafted last year by Seattle but never signed. This year he re-entered the draft and was picked up by Dallas with the 3rd pick in the 7th round. Also MLB Broderick Wilkerson will get a second chance. Last year Green Bay drafted him but never signed him and this year he will have to make a better impression on Kansas. They picked him up with the second-to-last pick in the 4th round. Matthew Hammer is the only one of the players to re-enter the draft that was not picked again this year but he will get a last chance in late FA.

6-32 (192 overall) FB Austin Barkshadt
Draft: 15/40; Pre-camp: 15/34; Post: xx/xx

Austin Burkhart also played his college football in California. He has good hands and is better to catch the ball then running with it. He is hopeless in blocking for the run but do a lot better job pass blocking. Despite his bad bench press result at the combine (19 rep) he has good blocking strength. San Francisco can hopefully use him on special teams as well. He will be the understudy for the only other FB on the roster Fred Beasley.

7-5 (197 overall) DT Nicky Raymond
Draft: 18/40; Pre-camp: 18/40; Post: xx/xx

The last player taken by San Francisco this year was DT Nicky Raymond. He had a good week at the combine and had relatively good scores compared to his ranking in the draft (ranked 19 best DT). Especially his speed in the 40-dash and agility drill impressed a lot of people. His pass rush technique is good but the rest of his scout report is below average. He will need to work hard in training camp to stay on the active roster this year.

eNFL 2006 Late FA week 1-4
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rookie contracts

With just a few weeks to go before the pre-season games kicks off San Francisco spend the first week of late FA to get as many drafted rookies under contract as possible. San Francisco drafted a total of 11 players this year and managed to get 8 of them to sign rookie contracts in the first week of late FA. The 3 players not to sign was first round pick WR Martin Harris, second round pick NT Rusty Webb and fourth round pick OLB Jonathan Peterson. The 49ers will have one more try to get them under contract and ready for camp.

49ers kicked the punter

San Francisco has decided to release one of the real veterans of the eNFL. Punter Chris Gardocki has been released this week. He played for San Francisco for the last two seasons after being released by Cleveland before the 2004 season. He was now in his 16th season and close to retirement. The release of Gardocki will free up $1.0 mil in cap-space without any extra cost, as no bonus was part of the deal. Chris Gardocki has an avg 38,0yds pr punt and have punted for a total of 9997yds in the eNFL.

The 49ers have already found the replacement for Chris Gardocki. Scott Player was one of the many cap-casualties on the Denver team this year and was released after the season. With Gardocki released San Francisco had no problems getting Scott to.
Only two kickers with more then 100 kicks have a better avg then Scott Player. He has the second longest punt in the eNFL (71yds) and leads the eNFL in punts inside the 20 with 113. He has signed a three-year deal worth $4.06mil with $420.00 in bonus-money.

Good-bye to an old fan favourite

San Francisco has also decided to let go of veteran DE Chidi Ahanout. He was the franchise player back in 2004 but signed a new 3-year deal the same year worth $15mil. He was scheduled to cost the 49ers close to $6.0 mil on the cap this year. Age has starting to show on Chidi Ahanout. In the off-season he has taken a ratings-hit of close to –10 points and its doubtful if the would make the starting line-up this season. Its sad to see a fan favourite leave the team but San Francisco feels that the money can be spend more wisely another place. The 49ers have signed the #38 overall pick from last years draft LDE Luke Bailey on a 3-year deal. He was released from Houston and will be a backup for Andre Carter and Orlando Jordan this year.

Another target for Jeff Garcia

San Francisco decided has added another WR to the team this year. First round draft pick Martin Harris has still not signed his rookie contract and the team only have one receiver with more then 20 starts in the eNFL. Their for the 49ers went out and got some extra help for Jeff Garcia and Dennis Northcutt this year. The new face in red&gold will be former Denver WR and 12-year veteran Rod Smith. He has started 37 eNFL games and has 151 catches for close to 2300yds. He is only signed to a one-year-deal that will pay him more then $6.0 mil. That makes him the third most expensive player on the 49ers roster only behind Jeff Garcia and Bryant Young. 5 other teams (BUF, CAR, NYK, PHI and SEA) also tried to sign him but all to two-year deals. San Francisco still got more then $8.8 mil to spend under the cap. The best WR now left in FA is Ike Hilliard and he is currently thinking about a contract offer from the Falcons worth more then $12.0 mil

49ers ad a few more rookies
San Francisco 49ers decided to add two more rookies to their squad only weeks before the official training camp is ready to begin. The two latest additions to the team are RB Alonzo Rogers and RG Rufus Pritchett. That brings the 49ers roster up to 50 players with still 3 drafted rookies not yet under contract. The 49ers also tried to sign CB Kris Welch but he decided to go to division rivals Arizona. Most teams now starts to look ready for camp with around 50-60 players under contract. The only two exceptions are the eAFC teams Houston and Denver. Denver is working hard to get out of their cap trouble created by their former GM and currently only have 39 players under contract. They have been out with contract offers to 47 different players and have already signed 19 players to minimum-contracts. Houston is also down to 39 players but has a different problem then Denver. They are still trying to get their new super starts to sign new deals to free up cap-space.

New player, new position
The 49ers also informed that rookie and 2nd round draft pick Rusty Webb has been changed from NT to LDE. He is not the only high drafted player to change position. Dallas picked Bob Bush 3rd overall in this years daft only to change him from DT to RDE a few weeks after the draft.
Last week San Francisco also decided to try to move veteran Zack Bronson to corner. The reason behind the move was that 2005 first round draft pick Morris Strong was planed to start as FS this year next to Tony Parrish. That left Zack Bronson who is in his last year of the contract out in the cold. With CB Ahmed Plummer gone to the Colts as an unrestricted free agent and no new CB added to the squard in the draft, San Francisco hoped Bronson could help out a weak secondery in his last season as a 49er. Unfortunaly the move looks to be in violation with the eNFLs Constitution. The constitution says:

Code:
You may not switch a player between position groups unless: i. Your scout sees the player's skills improving; or ii. The Rules Committee approves.

That was not the case for Zack Bronson. San Francisco is now looking in to the possibility to appeal the ruling as moving him to corner is still an upgrade for the team and therefore is for the best of the team. If San Francisco looses that appeal they will have to move Zack Bronson back to S where he will spend most of the year on the bench. A spokesman for the 49ers had the following comment.

Quote
This is our own fault. We didn’t know the word of the constitution good enough before we moved Bronzon. That is nobodys fault but our own. Hopfuly the Rules Committee will listen to our case and see that this move was only made for the better of the team and not as an attempt to cheat the leauge. We still think San Franciosco 49ers is a better team with Bronson as CB If the Rules Committee can not change the rulling we will immediately move Zack Bronson back to S.

No home-makeover for the 49ers this year
Once again San Francisco 49ers got a no to their plans to build a new stadium in San Francisco to replace the old at Candlestick Park. This is the 3rd time in a row that the 49ers get a no to build. The old stadium is from 1961 and is one of the oldest in the eNFL. It would be tempting for the 49ers to move their franchise to Los Angeles but GM Northwood have denied all talk about moving and said in a team-press release that the 49ers belongs in San Francisco and that the team would just have to try harder next year to come up with a plan that the public would support.
