Its got to be, right? You'd think they would have done a background check, but all that stuff happened 3 or so years ago, give the guy a break.

Good thing Bobby Cox hasn't had a bankruptcy, because his record is not exactly squeaky clean.

I think the issue is how it makes the D-Backs look since they didn't check him out, rather than his background. In effect, they are penalizing him for their mistake. And one of the owners who commented said as much - that they still would have hired him knowing what they later found out. Well, if that's true, why are you firing him? Because you look stupid for not discovering it on your own.

What a dumb owner. He has the right to tell the world he is a fool, I'm just not sure why he decided to actually do it.

Well since they forced Jerry Collango out it doesn't suprise me that the D-Backs are now the laughing stock of the MLB and we'll soon see the diper boys playing again with Randy Johnson and no free agents to boot.

Colangelo was pretty much an idiot, too. He traded Schilling for Casey Fossum, almost straight up now that Sexson's not coming back, just because he hates Steinbrenner.

I'm fairly certain they'll be changing their own diapers. Randy will be playing elsewhere this year, but to make up for the lack of anything they got from the two big deals last year, someone's going to have to give AZ a really, really good package.

Poor Wally. I wanted the Mets to hire him. I just don't get why these idiot coaches don't sign the contract immediately.

These things happen when you buy a World Series, ask the Marlins. The difference is the Marlins got quality young players and won another one. The DBacks would rather trade Schilling for a bum lefthander.

When they won it all, everyone was glad they didn't pull a Marlins and dismantle the team, but really, that team was built on deferred money and balloon payment contracts, and it was just a matter of time. From a PR perspective, I guess it worked, but the two situations were about the same. The only difference is AZ didn't dismantle by the all-star game the next year. Of course, Florida didn't lose 111 games, either.

I think Arizona is paying a big chunk of change to Schilling this coming year and if Johnson is traded they are on the hook for a bunch of money as well. They'll be paying millions for their two former aces to pitch elsewhere.

Did anyone see the Randolph contract with the Mets? Will manage for food.(In relative terms)

Didn't Randolph turn down Cincy a few years ago because they wanted to pay him nothing?

Who is it that's paying Bobby Bonilla in a series of 1-year annuities through like 2030 or something bizarre like that? Is that the Mets, too?

Since he refuses to get real managerial skills in the minors, you can only pay a guy so much for sitting next to Joe Torre, I guess. Osmosis pays only so much.

I thought Schilling signed an extension with the Sox or a new deal, so I don't think the DBacks are paying him anything, and I doubt if they traded Johnson they'd be expected to pay anything for him.

I just heard that they hired Bob Melvin to replace Backman.

I heard on the local station that Arizona still had big committments to both. Maybe it was just Johnson.

They most likely meant that some of the money from previous years was deferred.
