At least he does his best work in the 4th quarter.
Seriously, it will be interesting to see if "The Snake" can benefit from a change of scenery, and what he can do on a decent team. I'm not holding my breath, but it will be fun to watch. |

7 million strait up and then the other 6 million spread over the years of the contract maybe?
edit: then again why would they do that knowing that grieses cap hits will be this year and next....dunno edit: then again on third thought it makes a ton of sense. after the broncos release griese after june 1st they only have a 2.4 mil hit on the cap this year and then a 6.9 hit next year. so this way they give jake his bigger amount of bonus before next year so that when they take the big griese hit they wont take such a big one from plummer.

Roster bonuses I'm guessing.
I'm also guessing he'll never see much of the roster bonus money if it's not within the first 2 years. Didn't Denver think Jeff Lewis would be the guy who would step in and start once Elway retired? |

I think this will be a great signing for the Broncos. Plummer will be a solid player with a decent squad.

Well, the fact that it says "guaranteed bonuses" makes me think it's just a split / deferred signing bonus, not an option / roster bonus. My point was that the author needs to do a little better job distinguishing between "$ to sign" and a "$ signing bonus".

All the Donkeys did was to switch from a QB who couldn't complete third-down passes to one that throws 4 INTs a game.

Shanahan may be a scouting guru when it comes to running backs, but he wouldn't know a good QB from Jake Plummer. Good thing Elway was already there when he got there.

I think the "7 million to sign" means 7 million in guaranteed contract money. I'm guessing maybe years 1, 2, and maybe 3 of his salary are also guaranteed? Jeff Lewis looked so good in pre-season games when Elway was still with the team. Too bad that didn't work out. Or maybe they should have tried to let Bubby lead them to a three-peat. |

So it's basically a 2 year deal with a 5 year option after 2004. Good deal for the Broncos I guess. If he works out, they pick up the option. If he sucks, they wave goodbye. Not nearly as bad as it had initially sounded. That first, poorly-written article made it sound like there was 13 million in guaranteed money. |

sorry! I'm such a football junkie, I'm in total withdrawal all off-season. All there is for me is hunting down and analyzing every signing that goes on. I cant wait until the draft, and then pre-season. Once August hits I think I'll be alright. |

I tink it is a great deal for the Bronco's. A mobile QB is just what they need. With a tremendous running game that the Defense has to respect it gives the QB more room to operate. A guy like Plummer can throw on the rum or make things happen on his own so the defense needs to respect that. I think he will help the running game because the defense will allways have to have abackup plan in mind.

im not sure what everyone see's in Plummer.
i wanted to like the guy a few years ago but his TD/INT ratio is just pathetic. Now throwing to Big ED and Rod Smith cant hurt any quarterback. But i'd try to trade for that back-up QB from Philly(i forget his name... Feeny or feely or something like that ). He's raw (considering he played backup to Harrington in collage for most of his collage career).... but he proved (to me anyway) that he can play. Just a thought..... |

As a beloved Cardinal fan, I'm glad to see Plummer go. He was just too inconsistent, and a good QB still performs at a high level when the team around him is not (though not as high as when a good team is around him of course). Plummer hasn't shown that ability.
I think he'll do better in Denver until the press and fans get on him for messing up. Now then lets talk about David Boston signing with the Chargers. Just like I predicted the Cards lose him and get nothing for him. What was so wrong with tagging him and trading him if you thought he wasn't worth resigning to a long term contract? He was the best WR in the league a season or two ago, and your top three WR are all free agents this season. How can you let him go? Boggles the mind. Yet another Cardinal who will go on to shine elsewhere. *Sigh*

I find it interesting how the Cardinal fans turned on Plummer. Without him the Cardinals would have won maybe 1 game last year and certainly would not have made the playoffs a few years ago. Arizona has this tendency of finding one player and blaming them, then shipping them out of town to win or at least go to the superbowl with another team (a la Simeon Rice, Aeneas Williams) People put all the pressure of winning and losing on Jake, but even "The Snake" needs an offensive line, running game, and wide receivers which Arizona simply does not have. Now Jake goes to a team that has had one of the better OL's, one of the better running games, and people he can throw to. Yes, he still needs to prove himself, but I certainly believe he'll do it. In addition he doesn't have the off-field baggage of Griese, so he's a definite upgrade in that respect. I just wish Arizona fans would stop blaming talented players and start blaming the idiots running the team. When Plummer hoists the Lombardi trophy in a few years, like a jilted boyfriend, you're going to realize what a great thing you had and stupidly let go.

Jerem,
Oh I certainly do blame the idiots running Arizona. But they can't play on the field can they? I have no doubt Plummer will have a better season with Denver due to the better players around him. But holding up the Lombardi Trophy? I'm sorry I just don't see it. Even when he had better players around him, he made too many poor decisions that led to them having to come from behind in way too many games. I like Jake the person, I just remain very skeptical of Jake the quarterback. Six seasons as the #1 QB with one playoff appearance during that time is enough to make me doubt any quarterback regardless of who is around him.

Remember, Thomkal, Steve Young was thought to be a too hyped mediocre QB when San Fran pryed him from Tampa.
Plummer will be ok in Denver. He may even lead them to the playoffs this year.

I never thought that Denver should have given up on Griese. They made him a scapegoat.

Thomkal-
You may very well be right. The truth is I really WANT Jake to succeed (except against KC). I have been a big fan of him since he was at ASU. By the way, though my post followed yours it really wasn't directed at you, I've been hearing about this all season from my Dad who lives in Arizona. |
