Don't I Know Your Face?

I follow most pro sports pretty closely ( even though I'm in Australia ) but there are always guys that I know about but I would still have trouble recognizing unless they were wearing a name tag.

I'm not talking about the leading money earner on the Bowling Tour or the 3rd string QB on the Lions but players you have heard about a thousand times but draw a blank when in comes to recognizing them.

The main one for me is Trot Nixon. You would think I'd have some idea about a guy that played on a World Series winning team, has hit 100 HR and played regularly since 1999. But every time I hear his name, I have absolutely no idea what he looks like.

There are others as well, like most of the NHL and a lot of rookie NBA players, but I'm talking about guys that have been around for a while.

Which player does it for you?

Actually I was thinking that football had the disadvantage of players wearing helmets. The NFL even went to the extent of outlawing the removal of helmets on the field to stop players from "marketing" themselves after a big play.

Drew Brees is a recent example of a guy that I'd think "Oh, that's what he looks like."

Yeah, it's not so much that I've never seen him but that I'll never actually remember his mug when his name comes up again.

i know. i figured that's what you meant, as it's easy enough to GIS for someone's pic these days.

Marcus Giles...who is this guy, and has anyone ever seen him and Marquis Grissom in the same place at the same time?? I get the two of them so mixed up it's not even funny. And I don't have a picture of what either of them look like.

Well, considering that Marcus Giles is white and Marquis Grissom is black, you just made a funny.

Marcus Giles is like a smaller, less tan Brian Giles. Is it just me or in ever picture does it look like Brian Giles smothers himself in fake tanning stuff?

It's okay, everybody has that reaction when they discover Marcus Giles is white. For instance, he's on Bill Simmons' "All Reggie Cleveland Team" for athletes who sound like they should be a different race than they are.

Also-Brunell, Martin, Harrison? That's gotta be a joke, too, right?

Well, I can't say much because I play pro video games with all their faces. For instance, I could give a perfect description of what SF little used Ronald Dupree (of the Pistons) looks like, for example.

I thought Bobby Humphey (of Bronco fame) was white for the longest time, because he was portrayed that way in NES Play Action Football....

I loved that game!!!

Mo Carthon was the MFing man, yo. Of course, it was hard to beat the Rams when Everett and Anderson were in synch (and don't forget about Cleveland Gary!!!).....

I was a huge Cleveland Gary fan...anyways.

I have a weird ability to put names to faces in all 4 major sports...friends and my girlfriend find it amazing, (even though my gf most of the time has no idea who the person is)..

my notables are Steve Stone - SP, Dave Gallagher - OF, Steve Rain - RP, Brian Evans - SF, Paul Bako - C - saw him at a restaurant after a Met game last year.

Huh? I have no idea what those three guys look like, other than their race.

Ok, Harrison must be the guy on the far right cause hes the skinnier black dude, but that was more deduction than knowing what he looked like.

I used to watch Troy O'Leary play for the El Paso Diablos way back in '92/'93. He led the Texas League in batting and was my hero (until Jeff Cirillo came around and stole my heart). When he broke out with the Sox I was so excited...I remember some sport radio guy going on about who in the hell was this Troy O'Leary dude that was in the top ten in batting...

I'm in a room with Marvin Harrison and David Alan Grier right now. Come find us.

As for the faces, I know the faces of a lot of superstar players pretty well, at least as far as the NFL, NHL, and (to some extent) MLB are concerned. I don't watch enough NBA to know many of the newer faces (I probably couldn't tell Dwyane Wade from Rashard Lewis, for example, and I have no idea what Nene looks like), but I can get a few.

Now, if you showed me pictures of a bunch of current NASCAR drivers, I could definitely pick out Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt, Jr., but I can't recognize Sterling Marlin, and I wouldn't know Tony Stewart if he punched me in the face (see what I did there?).
