Playing Along With 2005 - a DMB Projection Disk Dynasty

This one will be a little bit different. Unlike most of the career-oriented dynasties, this will strictly be a replay. However, here's the twist - it will be a "replay" of the 2005 MLB season using Diamond Mind Baseball and their projection disk.

Over the years the people at Diamond Mind have developed a reputation as the leader in the replay industry because of their thorough statistical approach to the game of baseball. Along with their season replay disks, they recently began selling projection disks (the last few years) utilizing their own projection system. This includes current rosters utilized projected statistics (via their own proprietary system) as well as top prospects that are expected to make an impact this year.

How will Randy Johnson, Carl Pavano and Jared Wright pitch for the Yankees? How will Edgar Renteria fit in at short for the Red Sox? Will Sosa have a rebirth as an Oriole? Will Pedro pitch well under the bright lights of the Big Apple? Will Beltran be able to shoulder the burden of carrying the Mets? Can Barry Bonds break Aaron's record without lintseed oil?! Will Giambi make a comeback?

So...I'm an Orioles fan (unfortunately) - but I always have a problem doing replays where the O's stink (which is pretty much every year now). So...as a switch, I've decided to manage the Phillies. I live in Delaware, so I listen to the Philadelphia sports radio station, WIP, and I'm fully aware of the team and their issues. There are high hopes for the Mets this year, despite problems with the bullpen. Can they take the NL East from the Braves, who may be poised for a fall? Is Delgado just what the Marlins needed? Is the lack of Larry Bowa just what the Phillies needed? Will the young Philadelphia farm system come through for me? Will Pat Burrell realize he can hit for average as well as power?

I will be autoplaying the rest of the schedule and provide updates throughout the year on all the interesting races. Obviously, there will a lot of coverage regarding the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry.

Follow along, and watch the 2005 season play out...slightly before the real one does .

April 4, 2005 - Washington at Philadelphia

Opening night here in Philadelphia, and it’s a warm 73 degrees with clear skies. If this is any indication, it’s going to be a warm summer here. Hopefully we can give the fans a hot pennant race as well J.

>>

So as not to put too much pressure on new Phillie Jon Lieber, I decide to start Vicente Padilla. My lineup is as everyone expects, Kenny Lofton leading off, followed by Jimmy Rollins, Bobby Abreu, Jim Thome, Pat Burrell, Mike Lieberthal, (a healthy) Derek Bell, Chase Utley and the pitcher Padilla.

>>

The Nationals go down 1-2-3 in the first, and I begin to think this job is easy. Maybe Bowa just screamed too much after all J.

>>

Livan Hernandez gets the call for the Nationals, and Kenny Lofton flies out to right field in his first atbat as a Phillie, and I carefully remind him that we’ll be looking for him to keep it on the ground in 2005. Kenny rolls his eyes and walks away from me. I think we may have our first personality conflict. Rollins strikes out, but Abreu launches one over the right field wall and gives us a 1-0 lead. Man, this IS easy. I congratulate myself for batting Abreu third. Thome launches one of his own to left, but it dies at the warning track. No bother, we’re winning and there’s only 8 more innings to go!

>>

In the top of the 2nd, Vinny Castilla scores the first run, knocks in the first RBI and hits the first homerun for the Washington Nationals. We’re tied, 1-1.

>>

Washington picks up another run in the 3rd when Livan Hernandez singles, Brad Wilkerson doubles and Jose Vidro hits an RBI single. Fortunately, Vicente coaxes Nick Johnson into an inning-ending DP. Washington, 2-1 heading to the bottom of the 3rd.

>>

In the bottom of the third Kenny Lofton launches one to the gap in right, but he’s robbed of an extra-base hit by Jose Guillen. I think about telling him again about our need for him to hit it on the ground, but think better of it .

>>

In the bottom of the 4th, we retake the lead - Burrell will single and Lieberthal doubles. Derek Bell singles Burrell in, and then Chase Utley hits a HORRIBLE grounder with one out that can’t score Lieberthal. This will go in my “little mistake” column. Fortunately for us, with 2 out, Vicente Padilla hits a ground ball up the middle that scores Lieberthal and we have a 3-2 lead heading into the 5th.

>>

In the top of the 6th, Kenny Lofton makes a diving catch off a Jose Vidro liner. I yell out, “Atta boy, Kenny!” Kenny smiles…maybe I just won him back. Still 3-2, entering the 7th.

>>

1-2-3 for Padilla in the top of the 7th. Since he’s due up first in the bottom of the inning, I tell him thanks much for a great performance, but the bullpen will take it from here. The line on Padilla – 7 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K. Can’t ask for much better than that!

>>

With one out in the 7th, Lofton lofts a HIGH fly ball to the gap in left and it falls in there. 3 bases later, Lofton has a triple and we make eye contact. He winks. Maybe I should just shut up. Rollins and Abreu then each strike out to end the inning – now I know why Bowa screamed so much last year. Rheal Cormier will start the 8th for us.

>>

Of COURSE it can’t be easy. Ground out, single, strike out, walk and infield single. Bases loaded…Nick Johnson up. Do I go to Billy Wagner in the 8th? Damn right!

>>

Here’s the pitch…checked swing strike.

0-1 count…swung on and missed.

0-2 Count – the crowd is standing and clapping for the strike out…Wagner fires…it’s in there for called strike three! PHEW!

>>

We muster nothing in the 8th. It’s up to Billy.

>>

Leading off the 9th, Jose Guillen grounds one to Thome and it’s a foot race to the bag. Guillen dives and beats it out. Sigh – here we go again. Pinch runner for Guillen and a pinch hitter for Termell Sledge. The pinch runner, Godwin is trying to steal, but he can’t get a good jump on the first pitch – a strike. I try to pick him off, but he JUST gets back. Ok…should I pitchout? Hmmm…I do so, but Godwin isn’t going. Of course. 1-1 the count. He’ll probably be stealing here, but I decide to pitch to Jamey Carroll. Wagner is really on today as he picks up strike two – Godwin wasn’t moving. Hmmm…time for another pitch out? Naaahhh…ground ball to the left side…Rollins backhands it and throws to Utley for the first out. Carroll beats the throw – no DP. Vinny Castilla at the plate now – he’s homered once already. I challenge him – swing and a miss, but Carroll is going and he beats Lieberthal’s throw. They tying run is now at 2nd – grr! The pitch to Castilla – he’s taking and it’s a called strike on the corner. Wagner has thrown 13 pitches, 11 for strikes J. 0-2 pitch…ball one – tried to get him to chase one – good idea. 1-2 pitch is popped up to short left field, but Burrell is there for the 2nd out. Ok…one out away from an opening day victory! Will Cordero is the pinch hitter – Cristian Guzman is on the on-deck circle. I decide to pitch to Cordero – Wagner is a monster, right? First pitch is a strike on the inside corner. Second pitch….soft grounder to Derek Bell – he comes in, picks it up and throws it to Thome for the final out! Woohoo!

Ok - so i learned this the hard way...as I'm updating April 5th's games online, I hit the unique
key sequence that takes me to the FOFC thread list and deletes everything I was working on.
Disgusted, I move onto April 6th.

Washington (0-1) at Philadelphia (1-0)

We enter the day tied for first with Atlanta at 1-0. Temperature at Citizen's Bank Park is 59,
with rain in the forecast. Tonight we'll go with Randy Wolf on the mound, Zach Day will be starting
for the Nationals. Our lineup remains pretty much the same, but I give Bell the day off to rest his
back and start Placido Polanco in his absence.

We pick up two runs in the first, behind Lofton's double, Abreu's triple and a Zach Day wild pitch.
Kenny seems to really be driving the ball, so I again I refrain from the ground ball speech.

In the bottom of the 5th we score 3 more runs, behind a leadoff walk by Lofton, an Abreu single, a Thome RBI single,
Burrell walk, a Lieberthal RBI walk and then a Chase Utley RBI single.

A couple of rain delays in the game, so Randy Wolf's pitching arm stiffens up after the 5th inning. We bring in Terry
Adams as a reliever.

We give up a run in the 8th to make it 5-2. Since we had the day off yesterday, I decide to
bring in Billy Wagner in the 9th, and he pitches a 1-2-3 inning to pick up his 2nd save in as
many games.

Philadelphia 5, Washington 2.

Player of the game was Bobby Abreu, who went 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored and an RBI.

Correct, it's David Bell. It's one of the really "cute" things about this dynasty. We'll have a number of players misnamed by myself due to laziness. How fun is that?

dola...I've got some train time today...so there's likely to be a large update later tonight.

Let me know if anyone wants write-ups on particular teams and players.

April 7th, 2005

I decide to give Jon Lieber his first start in a Phillie uniform. He'll be matched up against Esteban Loaiza, who is looking to escape from New York himself.

My lineup is pretty much the same as before. I give David Bell the start again at third. I'll be watching Jimmy Rollins as he has started the year slowly (0 for 8 with a walk and two Ks). On the hot list for us is Bobby Abreu, who is 5 for 8 with a triple, a homerun and 2 RBIs.

Well, here we go. Lieber throws two pitches and then a 50 minute rain delay hits. Both he and Loaiza's arms have stiffened up, so we immediately have to go to the bullpen. So much for seeing the Lieber vs. Loaiza matchup. I summon Gavin Floyd from the bullpen to see what he can do. Frank Robinson decides to counter with 26 year old T.J. Tucker.

After a scoreless half of the first inning, Lofton bats and draws his 2nd walk of the year. One thing Kenny has been bringing to the team thus far is patience. Jimmy Rollins follows with a single on a 1-2 pitch, and we're in business with Abreu, Thome and Burrell coming up. A grounder to Nick Johnson on the 1-2 pitch and he bobbles it, loading the bases for Thome . The 3-2 pitch is lined into center for a single, and we grab a quick 2-0 lead with no one out. After Burrell strikes out looking, Lieberthal lines a single into left for another run. Tucker is already up to 32 pitches. Chase Utley hits a high pop-up down the right field line that no one can get to - another run and a 4-0 lead. That's enough for Tucker and Frank Robinson brings in Claudio Vargas. Vargas promptly hits David Bell in the leg, loading the bases once again. Gavin Floyd grounds one in the hall into left, Lieberthal scores, and the throw home to try and get Utley misses the cutoff man. Utley scores and Wilkerson is charged with the throwing error. Lofton follows that up with a single, scoring Bell and Floyd - 8-0 now. Rollins singles to center, his second single of the inning. Abreu steps up to the plate and lines one into the left field corner for a double. Our man, Claudio Vargas has thrown 11 pitches and given up 4 hits. The score is now 9 to 0, and there's still only one out. Good Lord. Mercifully, Thome flies out to right field, but of course Jimmy Rollins scores on the play, making it a sac fly. Pat Burrell, who made the first out in the inning, launches one into right center for a double - 11 to 0. Finally, Liberthal pops out to left and the inning is over. For the Phillies, 11 runs, 9 hits, and one man left on base.

The horrors continue in the 2nd. Chase Utley grounds to Vinny Castilla to lead off. Vinny bobbles it, and then throws it into the first row of the seats, so Utley is on. David Bells follows with a shot over the fence in right center for his first homerun of the year. Gavin Floyd, the pitcher, is next and he grounds it to the pitcher Vargas. Vargas flips the ball to Nick Johnson, but it's in the dirt and he can't handle it. Floyd ends up at 2nd and that's it for Vargas. Joe Horgan enters the game as a reliever. Through 1+ innings, the Nationals have given up 10 hits, 13 runs and have made 4 errors. Seemingly, Horgan has found the secret to getting the Phillies out. He gets Lofton and Rollins, but Abreu gets on via an infield single. Thome follows with a line single that scores Floyd. Pat Burrell comes up and launches a pitch over the left field wall for a 3-run homerun. It's now the Phillies 17, Nationals 0. Holy moley. Lieberthal lines out to end the inning.

In the 4th, Abreu leads off with a home to center, Thome grounds a single up the middle and Burrell knocks him in with his 2nd homerun of the day. Phillies 20, Nationals 0. Roy Corcoran now on to pitch for Washington. He lasts through two batters as gives up 2 single to Lieberthal and Utley (good grief, quick hook on that one, Frank!). Bell singles to center to load the bases. The new pitcher is Luis Ayala, btw. Gavin Floyd lines out to Cristian Guzman to end the inning. 20 to 0 through 4. Whoops...that was the 1st out. Man, easy to lose track in this game. Lofton then launches one deep to left field that Wilkerson pulls down at the track. Lieberthal scores the 21st run of the game on the sac fly. Rollins grounds to first to end the inning.

The rest of the game plays out innocently enough, and the Phillies take home a 23-1 victory.

Gavin Floyd gets the win, he's 1-0. T.J. Tucker gets the loss, he's 0-1.

Interestingly, the Phillies turned 6 (!) double plays against the Nationals.

Other Games of the Day:

Oakland 9, Baltimore 8 (11)

The Orioles took an 8-2 lead heading into the 8th, but 40 year old Steve Reed gave up 3 hits and a walk on 10 pitches to start the comeback. B.J. Ryan was then summoned to put out the fire, but was unable to do so. 3 innings later, Nick Swisher knocked in Bobby Crosby for the go ahead run. Octavio Dotel struck out Luis Matos and Larry Bigbie, then forced Brian Roberts to pop-up the first pitch to pick up his 3rd save in 3 games.

Cleveland 13, Chicago (A) 4

14 hits, 4 of them homeruns, led the Cleveland Indians to an easy 13-4 victory over the White Sox. Millwood pitched 7 strong innings for the Indians and was the big benefactor of the offensive output. Orlando Hernandez gave up 6 hits and 7 runs in 3.1 innings to pick up his first loss.

Detroit 5, Kansas City 2

Nate Robertson scattered 8 hits over 6 scoreless innings, Magglio Ordonez hit his first homerun of the year, and Troy Percival picked up his first save in a Tiger uniform keying the 5-2 victory for Detroit.

Texas 2, Los Angeles (A) 1 (13)

Alfonso Soriano's homerun in the 13th (his first of the year), was just enough to give the Rangers a 2-1 victory over the Angels. Ron Mahay got the victory, pitching the last 1.1 innings in relief. The loser was Francisco Rodriguez. Vladimir Guerrero homered for the lone Angel run.

Atlanta 6, Florida 5

Ryan Langerhans collected 3 hits, including his first two homeruns of the year, and 4 RBIs to lead Mike Hampton and the Braves to a 6-5 victory over the Marlins. Dan Kolb picked up his 2nd save of the year, while Josh Beckett picked up his first loss.

New York (N) 4, Cincinnati 2 (12)

Kerry Robinson lined a two-out 2-run single in the top of the 12th inning to give the visiting Mets a 4-2 victory over the Reds. Mike DeJean got the victory for the Mets, and his record stands at 1-1. Notable: Kaz Matsui went 3 for 6, raising his average to .364. Carlos Beltran went 2 for 5 with 2 doubles to raise his average to .385.

San Diego 5, Pittsburgh 3

Jason Bay hit his league-leading 3rd homerun, but it wasn't enough as the Padres rode the pitching of Jake Peavy and Akinori Otsuka (who combined to give up 3 runs, walk 1 and strikeout 11) for the victory.

Los Angeles (N) 4, San Francisco 3

Jeff Kent hit a 3-run homer for the Dodgers, his first, to lead Los Angeles to a 4-0 victory over the Giants. Brad Penny pitched 6.2 innings of 3-hit ball for the victory and Eric Gagne struck out 4 in 1.2 innings of hitless relief.

Injuries: P Chris YOung of the Rangers will miss the next 12 days.

After sweeping 3 from the Nationals, we head to Busch for a 3-game series...

...and we end up getting swept. I tell ya, the Cardinals lineup is unreal. How the heck are you supposed to pitch to Walker, Edmonds, Pujols, Rolen and then Reggis Sanders (who has 4 homeruns already?). Fact is, you can't and my pitching staff found out the hard way.

Now...let's see if THIS works...

Analysis:

Offensively I am pretty happy. Thome and Abreu continue to be quite a force and Pat Burrell is off to a decent start, something he desperately needed. I've been moving some of the guys around the order a bit, so I can I maximize my left-righty-lefty lineup, and it forced Burrell into the 4th spot. I noticed he struggled there with men on base, so I'm going to keep Thome their. A couple of games ago Abreu pulled a muscle during a swing, so he's going to be out the next 4 days. During his absence I decided to put Marlon Byrd in center and move Lofton to right. Well...Marlon has shown absolutely no range (and a weak bat) and Lofton has a HORRIBLE arm. Big mistake on my part. So, I'm going to move Lofton back to center and probably platoon rightfielders. Jimmy Rollins is off to a slow start, but I'm not worried about him. Chase Utley has yet to show the power I'm expecting. My concern is that he may dig himself a hole that he'll find it hard to dig out of. Also, Placido Polanco is waiting in the wings, just waiting for Chase to fail.

On the pitching side, I think the series with the Nationals gave me false hope. Against the Cardinals the starters looked hittable and my relief corps was downright horrible. Even Billy Wagner gave up a game-winning pinch hit grand slam. Gavin Floyd piched well in his long relief appearance, so I can perhaps use him as a spot starter if needed. Obviously I know very little about Lieber since his long start lasted a third of an inning. Cormier and Worrell have absolutely sucked.

April 11th...

We head to Florida (3-3) for 3 games. In other notable series, the Yankees head to Boston, Toronto heads to undefeated Oakland and the 6-0 Padres head to the 4-2 Cubs.

Philadelphia (Wolf 1-0, 1.80) at Florida (Leiter 1-0, 2.57)

Randy Wolf pitched 7 strong innings, and the Phillies banged out 13 hits to lead Philadelphia to a 10-2 victory over the Marlins. Jim Thome goes 2 for 4 with a homerun and Chase Utley hits his first (yay). Wolf was awesome, and for the first time in a while the relievers didn't embarass themselves.

Unforuntately for us, Atlanta beats the Nationals, 7-3, and we remain one game back of the 5-2 Braves.

Other games:

Boston 5, New York (A) 2

Wells gets his first win and Manny Ramirez hits his 4th homerun. Mussina gets the loss (0-1).

Oakland 7, Toronto 6

Oakland wins their 7th straight game to start the season. Down 5-1 in the 6th, the A's score in 4 consecutive innings (including 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th). Eric Chavez goes 3 for 5 and hits the game-winning 2 RBI single with one out in the 9th. Duchsherer gets the win, he's 1-0. Frasor gets the blown save and loss for Toronto.

New York (N) 7, Houston 6

Carlos Beltran plays his first game in Houston since signing with the Mets as a free agent and hits his first homerun of the year. In the 9th inning, David Wright walks, steals second and goes to third on an error. Reyes singles him in for the victory. DeJean gets the blown save and the victory to up his record to 2-1. Harville (1-2) gets the loss.

San Diego 6, Chicago (N) 3

San Diego gets their 7th straight victory. Klesko homers for the first time of the year, and Dave Roberts picks up his 7th stolen base. Otsuka (2-0) gets the win, Hammond picks up his 2nd save. Mike Remlinger (1-1) gets the loss.

Gonna shoot myself for never learning this. I just did a big LONG post in the quick reply area, click on "Post Quick Reply" and the network was gone. Post LOST.

Our game against Florida was awful - we lost, 8-1.

In other news, Oakland wins their 8th straight, Minnesota wins their 6th straight and the Padres lose their first.

Games of April 13th

Philadelphia (Lidle 0-0) at Florida (Willis 0-0)

In Bobby Abreu's continued absence, I start Jorge Padilla in RF and bat him 8th.

We manufacture a run in the first off a Jimmy Rollins walk and stolen base, followed by a Jim Thome RBI single. Unfortunately, Florida ties it up in the bottom of the inning via a Juan Pierre double and Miguel Cabrera single. At this point, Lidle begins to lose his concentration and frames a wild pitch and a passed ball (ty, Lieberthal) between two walks. With the bases loaded and two out, Lidle K's Jeff Conine to end the inning.

In the bottom of the 2nd, Luis Castillo hits a key run-scoring single but pulls a hammy and will be out for the next 13 days. Through 2, Lidle has given up 4 hits and 3 walks - ugh - looks like a long year for him.

Eventually, Lidle calms down and gives up 2 runs over 6 innings. Our relief corps (consisting of Worrell, Cormier, Telemaco and Wagner) combine to give up 4 walks, 3 hits and 2 runs over 2 innings. The horrible pitching continues. Willis, Perisho and Spooneybarger combine for the 4-1 victory.

Phila. 1 7 0
Flor. 4 10 0

W. Willis 1-0 L. Lidle 0-1 S. Spooneybarger 1

We were fortunate to give up only 4 runs while allowing 17 baserunners.
