Civ I, Civ II, Alpha Centauri. Imperialism was very good, STILL need to get back to Imperialism II.

FBCB has potential now that I've picked it up.

Other games that I have played well into the night (not turn based) are the original MicroLeague, Maniac Mansion/Zak McKraken (one more puzzle, really) and CircleMud.

(Hot Dog Stand...good one FN)

That would be Starflight . I think that eventually made it to the C64.

That game was great, nothing but go out and explore, then you find out what the game was about.

Another for me was Starcon2, "I'll mine out just one more planet!"

Some people loved SMAC, and some like me never really connected with it. I think a lot of it had to do with theme, getting the automobile was much more monumental than getting transcendence, etc.

It doesn't carry the name but it basically evolved from that family. I don't see why it can't be considered part of it.

Oh and "Battle for Wesnoth" .... best FREE game I've ever played, the main campaigns are very balanced and its a real challenge on the harder levels (and each map requires THOUGHT to beat, its not simply a case of stockpiling units).

I forgot about SSG's Warlords game. That was another fun one. I haven't played the newer ones. SSG is apparently working on bringing out a new version of Reach For the Stars, which is the game that probably inspired Masters of Orion.

Ah yes, Warlords III got an ample wee-hours workout back in the day.
