Portable Air Conditioning
I currently live in a two bedroom apartment. The layout is thus that it makes it impossible for the air conditioner in the living room to make any difference in the bedroom. We also recently adopted two cats who are not allowed in the bedroom so we are forced to keep the bedroom door closed. The apartment complex does not want us putting in a window unit.
Does anyone have any experience with a portable air conditioning unit? The bedroom is going to be ridiculous this summer and I we need to do something about it. |

because it looks bad. .. also, get rid of the cats. or let them in the bedroom. or put a screen door or something on the bedroom door to the rest of the apartment. or move. |

For starters, you might want to check and see if it's even legal for the complex to deny you a window unit. There are portable stand-alone units out there, but I can't vouch for their efficiency. I have a window unit I bought at Costco pretty cheap a few years ago, and it kicks ass. |

We have a stand-alone evap cooler for my office (second floor, full on afternoon sun). I only use it when I'm in the office and it works great. I wouldn't recommend running it all the time though, the water would run out after about four hours and then it's no more than a giant fan. It's light enough that I can move it without any hassle. I bought it at Lowes and it was around $100. I don't know how much my electric bill increased due to its use, but in the summer time I pretty much just pay the electric bill without really looking at it. |

They don't have central AC in most places in Italy, so when I lived over there, the portable units were pretty much the only thing available. They work really well for a single room. I had a DeLonghi Super Penguino, and it kept the room nice and cool. They sell them over here, so that's one I can vouch for.

I'd love to have a Super Penguino.

I agree with you guys on the cats but even with the door open the cold air is not able to turn the corner and make its way into the bedroom.

You should look for an air conditioner with a higher Speed to the Outside rating and good Breakaway Speed. That might help it turn the corner and make it to the bedroom. I know. *groan*

The way I see it, you actually have two problems, not one.
#1 You have cats #2 You failed to realize that not having air conditioning builds character. What are you, a Californian? |

Something to think about, portable airconditioners have an exhaust that needs to be vented out through the window. If your apartment won't let you have a window unit, they may not let you have the exhaust attached to the window either. Before you put any money out make sure that the Apt. will allow you to use it.

Me too. I wouldn't even care what it did, as long as it said "Super Penguino" on the side.
