Where did the extra draft picks this year come from?
I never got around to hearing exactly how these teams managed to get extra picks in this years NFL draft. Is there something an owner can do to be awarded an extra draft pick by the NFL? Did all the "Bonus" picks come at the end of the 3rd?
With the last pick in the 3rd round, the Denver Broncos selected Clarrett with the 101st pick of the draft. My math tell me there are 32 teams and at 3 rounds that equals 96 picks not 101. Where did the extra 5 pick come from? Just curious? |

They are compensatory picks for losing free agents, I believe.

"Based on the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement:
A team is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks if it is determined that they lost more or better players than they were able to acquire during the previous year's free agency period. The number of picks a team receives equals the net loss of compensatory free agents (maximum of four). Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula that was developed by the NFL Management Council. Not every free agent lost or signed by a team is covered by this formula. " |

I guess that is an answer?
Now I am even more confused than ever. Were they all 3rd round picks? Anyone out there want to give me a real world example? |

Bonus picks come at end of 3/4/5/6/7.
Basically to get a 3rd you have to lose a stud player, preferrably a lineman, and he has to get a huge contract, and play well the next season. You dont get the picks until next year for the players you lose this year. |

yes, it's an answer. I don't even know if the exact formula is published anywhere, but like someone else said it depends on the number and quality of players lost and the number signed. They are picks added to the end of round 3-7 and cannot be traded. Here is the full list for this year: Round 3 33. (96) Tennessee Titans 34. (97) Denver Broncos 35. (98) Seattle Seahawks 36. (99) Kansas City Chiefs 37. (100) New England Patriots 38. (101) Denver Broncos Round 4 33. (134) St. Louis Rams 34. (135) Indianapolis Colts 35. (136) Tennessee Titans Round 5 33. (169) Carolina Panthers 34. (170) New England Patriots 35. (171) Carolina Panthers 36. (172) Philadelphia Eagles 37. (173) Indianapolis Colts 38. (174) San Francisco 49ers Round 6 33. (207) Carolina Panthers 34. (208) Dallas Cowboys 35. (209) Dallas Cowboys 36. (210) St. Louis Rams 37. (211) Philadelphia Eagles 38. (212) Oakland Raiders 39. (213) Baltimore Ravens 40. (214) Oakland Raiders Round 7 33. (247) Philadelphia Eagles 34. (248) San Francisco 49ers 35. (249) San Francisco 49ers 36. (250) St. Louis Rams 37. (251) St. Louis Rams 38. Under terms of the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in a year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks. The number of picks a team receives equals the net loss of compensatory free agents up to a maximum of four. The 32 compensatory choices announced will supplement the 223 choices in the seven rounds of the 2005 NFL Draft (April 23-24). This year, the compensatory picks will be positioned within the third through seventh rounds based on the value of the compensatory free agents lost. Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. The formula was developed by the NFL Management Council. Not every free agent lost or signed by a club is covered by this formula. The following 2005 draft picks have been determined by the NFL Management Council: Round Round choice/overall selection Team 3 33-96 Tennessee 3 34-97 Denver 3 35-98 Seattle 3 36-99 Kansas City 3 37-100 New England 3 38-101 Denver 4 33-134 St. Louis 4 34-135 Indianapolis 4 35-136 Tennessee 5 33-169 Carolina 5 34-170 New England 5 35-171 Carolina 5 36-172 Philadelphia 5 37-173 Indianapolis 5 38-174 San Francisco 6 33-207 Carolina 6 34-208 Dallas 6 35-209 Dallas 6 36-210 St. Louis 6 37-211 Philadelphia 6 38-212 Oakland 6 39-213 Baltimore 6 40-214 Oakland 7 33-247 Philadelphia 7 34-248 San Francisco 7 35-249 San Francisco 7 36-250 St. Louis 7 37-251 St. Louis 7 38-252 Philadelphia 7 39-253 Tampa Bay 7 40-254 Seattle 7 41-255 New England Following are the compensatory free agents lost and signed by the clubs that will receive compensatory picks in the 2005 NFL Draft: Team Lost Signed BALTIMORE Marcus Robinson CAROLINA Greg Favors, Deon Grant, Reggie Howard, Jeno James Brandon Short DALLAS Mario Edwards, Ebenezer Ekuban DENVER Bert Berry, Keith Burns, Ian Gold Marco Coleman INDIANAPOLIS David Macklin, Marcus Washington KANSAS CITY Jonathan Quinn, John Tait Chris Bober NEW ENGLAND Mike Compton, Bobby Hamilton, Ted Washington, Damien Woody Keith Traylor OAKLAND Eric Barton, Lorenzo Bromell, Roderick Coleman, Charlie Garner, Rick Mirer, Matt Stinchcomb Danny Clark, Bobby Hamilton, Warren Sapp, Ted Washington PHILADELPHIA Marco Coleman, Carlos Emmons, Duce Staley, Bobby Taylor, Troy Vincent, Bobbie Williams Dhani Jones, Jevon Kearse ST.
