Saddam to make live address
CNN is reporting Saddam Hussein will lead news conference and make major announcement at noon. Iraq says it will be of "historic proportions."
Does anyone think it'll really be Saddam? And any idea what the news might be? |

They keep saying "historic." Course that could mean anything and may have some implication based on the horrible day America had in the battlefield today.
My guess it'll be something to do with Iraqi civilians getting killed, the POWs, the death of coaltion forces, etc. I don't think it'll be a resignation speech. Or perhaps som sinister order -- heaven forbid. |

My guess is this ends up as a "Weekend at Bernies" episode. He'll walk in propped up by Sean Penn and the Dixie Chick and fall over 15 times during the news conference.

MSNBC is saying that there is a meeting tomorrow between the different arab nations, and he is going on tv to show that the US hasnt just walked all over him, and try to drum up some support.

Well, if it is Saddam. If it is live. And he starts doing stupid shit ... expect "Shock And Awe Part Deux"
I just have the sneaking suspicion that he'll go on TV to order some sinister attack. |

Well apparently it was not live, and strongly suggests he was killed or seriously injured in the attacks.

Why are they continuously staging these kinds of fake events, pulling together historical tapes? It would be better to not see anything, than see them jumping through hoops that makes everyone start to believe Saddam is dead. Perhaps they *want* everyone to think he is dead, without exactly saying that.

Heh. I wonder what it really would take to get the US to believe that it was really Saddam live. If the video feed apparently shows Saddam with a copy of that day's Le Monde (which we all suspect he reads), won't we just cry out that it was an impersonator? What would we demand - a birthmark?
Just strikes me as funny... we're to the point where our cynicism has reached potentially unassailable proportions, at least once we've taken a side on an issue. We'll probably confront the same sort of cynicism (though much more serious) on matters of WMD "discoveries" in Iraq. Those who are inclined to support the war will see this as proof positive, and those who are inclined not to will suspect that any evidence was planted or conjured up by the US intelligence community. Sort of reminds me of nearly every OJ Simpson debate I listened to (which wasn't many before I gave up). Last edited by QuikSand : 03-24-2003 at 09:10 AM. |

Weird, right after the speech last night CNN said that Saddam directly mentioned the resistance in Umm Qasar (indicating that there was a chance of it being live), but I don't see anything like that on the transcript. Who to believe, CNN or the Brits..?

Hammer,
Nice photoshop. QS, I agree with most of your points. The only thing I'd need would be a word or two about POW's, downed Apache's or even a "you didn't get me losers" In the end, I'm only speculating. I think he's dead. In the end, it doesn't really matter to me. I have little doubt that within a month, he will not be leading the Iraqi people. (I think most people would agree with that, war protestors or not) It's also quite interesting you don't see the two kids either. Not sure if they are all dead, but it's interesting none the less. How about some statements about events that make it irrefutable that the speech was made after the war started. So far nothing of that nature has been said by him. Everything that has been said could have been recorded two weeks ago.

CBS radio reported he mentioned something about a specific division who was doing a great job fighting the US, but they've actually surrendered already which led many in the US government to believe it wasn't "fresh".

Quick, it could be possible to alter the video to show that as the correct copy of Le Monde. The praise towards the squad(s) that surrendered is what stands out as odd. I would think that there would have been mention of the POW's since that was the biggest news at the time.
Granted, it's all speculation, but many things just don't seem to be adding up. IF they are indeed showing prerecorded messages then he is most likely seriously injured or dead. |
