Semi-Reliable source...Jackson returning to the Lakers

This will be the one and only thread I'll ever start about the NBA, but I rarely get this kind of "inside" information, so I thought I'd share it. I have it from a seni-reliable source that Phil Jackson has already made an agreement with Lakers to return, to the point where they are already hiring staff. A good friend of mine's son had an interview yesterday to be a part of that staff, so this is where I get the rumor. He is not someone who would lie, nor have reason to. The main reason I'll call him semi-reliable is because he has gotten things mixed up before, but the only way I can see he has this wrong is if the Lakers are hiring assistant coaches before they hire a new head coach, which doesn't seem likely.

Anyway, speculate away!

It would be funny if they really did hire some guy named Phil Jeckson.

"What? You thought we meant THAT guy? No, Phil Jeckson!

I hate baseketball but my sister's friend's uncle's grandmother's brother's son said the same thing. I can't be to sure how reliable this is since I don't have a sister however.

My friend's son is. I won't say who, but he has never coached in the NBA before. Highschool, college, and ABA. His dad was warning him that this would be a very different from what he has dealt with before, but I think the opportunity is too big for him to pass on it. I don't know for sure that he was going to be a "shoe-in hire" though.

What does that person say about EA and their involvement in an up-and-coming text sim?

Well, it's funny you ask because Phil Jackson is actually developing EAs new text sim.

Well, you can take this just as any rumor on the internet as speculation, and I'm in no way saying this is a "lock" because, as I said, my source could be mistaking. I started not to post this, but I couldn't help but think if it where a team I cared about, and someone knew something behind the scenes, I'd want to know. So, take this with a grain of salt, and feel free to bite me.

edit: Heh, I didn't see the "bite me" at the end of your post (must have read to fast) but again - don't take offense.

I thought so, too. Maybe you can clairify what position he will be in. My friend said he would be taking over for someone "in his 80's and will soon be retiring." He'll be working with him for a while, but then take on the total position once he is gone. Do you know who is on the Laker's staff that fits that description?

I hate Phil Jackson's ways of Zen and all that stuff. Get a good Taoist coach or at least a coach following catholic philosophies.

To try to answer my own question, I looked at the current coaching staff and it doesn't look like anyone fits that discription. It could be that a) the old coach is someone Jackson is bringing with him, or b) that it is really more of a permanent staff position than a coaching staff position. I don't know.

I can guarentee that it is not ownership.

Good to hear - Im sure that whole Jackson/Kobe thing will work itself out very nicely while the Lakers are on their way to back to back lottery seasons I'm sure they will be able to co-exist at least until December.

That is assuming the season starts on time since Deputy Fife (aka Russ Granik) said to prepare for a lockout which if one does happen will catapault Stern well above Betteman for title of worst commissioner ever and leave us with just two major sports. Nothing like talking about a lockout one game into the Finals that basketball purists have been waiting years for.

Sounds like Tex Winter to me, although I thought he retired already.

Winter is the one who came up with the triangle offense.

I do seem to remember there was a longtime defensive assistant who was getting up there in years as well.

Now if we can ship Slava and George to Indiana for the 18th, we can ship Caron and that 18th to NO for their 4th overall, we might be able to actually do some things

Nah, why would he want to go back to that hell-hole? He's going to a different hell-hole, Detroit. He'll take over for Larry Brown after this season.

The Lakers are just going to promote Kobe to player/coach/gm, he's already doing the player/gm thing, what's one more duty.

Could be Winter. Sounds about right, but I'm wondering how he became a "close friend of the family." I'll find out more tommorow.

So, here's the scoop. It is Tex Winter that he'll be working with and eventually replacing. According to his brother (much more reliable than his father on the details), Phil Jackson told the Lakers he would not even consider coming back without Winter, and Winter said he wouldn't come back unless he could hire this person as his eventual replacement. This person had his interview with the team on Thursday and believes that the deal is done.
